MUSIC FESTIVAL SET FOR TOWN Report by Tom Martin

BOOTLE is set to host its biggest ever music festival - a two day event that it is hoped will attract thousands of visitors. In what is expected to be the largest event of its kind to be held in the town, organisers SAFE Regeneration are planning two stages of live music to be performed on Saturday, August 25 and Sunday, August 26. The main stage will be placed behind the Lock & Quay pub for the headline acts, which includes Hue & Cry and The Real People, with a second stage to be located adjacent to the Leeds & Liverpool canal for upcoming bands. There are also plans to create “Liverpool's biggest beer garden” with a large section of the site to be used for locals to enjoy a drink and other refreshments. Jane Elizabeth Dawe, community development officer at SAFE, told the Champion how they were inspired to organise the event after the success of their beer festival last year. She said: “We had a beer festival at the pub last year with a focus on real ales but we also had live music which was really popular. We engaged with the community and found there was a real thirst for live music. That's how we got talking about organising a music festival. “Everyone is really excited and fingers crossed we will have nice weather. The event is for everyone and we are hoping to have water-based activities for children on the canal and under 10s can come for free. It's going to be a family-friendly weekend. More inside

Poundworld's store at the Strand

Store closes with loss of 11 jobs Report by Henry James THE Poundworld store at The Strand is set to close with the loss of 11 jobs. The struggling discount retailer will close the Bootle site this coming weekend. A number of Poundworld stores, will continue to trade but the Strand outlet is one of an additional 80 stores that will shut following the announcement on July 10 that 25 Poundland stores had to close. In June the discount chain failed to find a buyer and it went into administration. Clare Boardman, joint administrator, commented: “Whilst we remain hopeful that a sale for part, or parts, of the business can still happen, it has not been possible to sell the business as a whole. “We would like to thank all the employees for their continued support and commitment during this difficult time. We are keeping staff appraised of developments as they happen.” Poundworld was started in 1974 at a market stall in Wakefield.
