Pupils play the part of firefighters for the training programme
Young ‘firefighters’ earn awards at Beacon project YOUNGSTERS swapped their classroom for a fire station and ended up being presented with special awards. Holy Spirit Primary School pupils took part in a six-week training programme called the Beacon Project with Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service, in partnership with Everton in the Community. The programme culminated in a final day of tests when the pupils, watched on by parents and teachers, used fire hoses and breathing equipment to rescue victims in a mock emergency situation. They were awarded ‘Passing Out’ certificiates by Everton in the Community’s former playing
star. Ian Snodin and senior fire crews at Kirkdale Fire Station. Headteacher of Holy Spirit, Matthew Byrne, said: “The children gained huge self-esteem, while team work, listening skills, resilience and a sense of organisation and discipline were clearly evident. “Well done to all the boys and maybe some of them have been inspired to make a career out of the fire service in the future. “A huge thank you to our friends at Merseyside Fire and Rescue who have been tremendous with the children and also Steve Watt, our link coach from Everton in the Community, who had the great vision to drive forward the initiative.”

Report by Tom Martin A SPORTS centre in Bootle has unveiled ambitious plans to expand and upgrade its facilities. Activity for All, on Maguire Avenue, has submitted a planning application to Sefton Council for permission to demolish an outdated sports hall and build a modern replacement. The design features new sports pitches, a new entrance, offices and a gym. The planning application put forward on behalf of Activity for All states: “The proposal demonstrates the client’s ambition to invest in the area, ensuring long-term provision of high quality sporting facilities for the community and greater city. “Our ambition is to develop the site to its full potential.” Founded in 2004, Activity for All is a multi-sport leisure centre based at the former Bootle Stadium and is used by local residents and schools. Their second sports hall, which was recently upgraded with new 3G football pitches, will remain as it is.

The planning application adds: “Activity for All currently work out in the community with over 150 local schools as well as community groups and local organisations to identify areas of need and increase participation levels. “Activities are run both in the community and at the existing sports centre in Bootle that provides the base. It is anticipated that 50 or so local schools would specifically use the centre as an element of their physical education provisions. “The centre in Bootle has undergone sig-
nificant modernisation over the past few years including the re-canvasing of the larger dome, two new 3G pitches, state of the art LED lighting, complete refurbishment of the lounge and bar area, update and expansion of the viewing area and three new classrooms / offices. “This planning application proposes further improvements to the centre so that it is able to provide the best possible sports facilities to the local community.” Sefton Council is yet to make a decision on the plan.
