Appliance of science earns Curtis two medals at Chemistry Olympics A SCIENCE-savvy student from Bootle has emerged with a silver and gold medal after competing in The Chemistry Olympiad. Curtis Winter, who studies Alevel Biology and Chemistry at Hugh Baird College, took part in the competition when he finished
in the top 7% of 9,465 students from 727 schools and colleges from across the UK. The Royal Society Olympiads are the leading chemistry and biology online competitions for students in secondary education. Continued inside

CHURCH-GOERS preparing for the 60th anniversary of their place of worship, were devastated to discover mindless yobs had broken into and trashed the building. The intruders, who used a spade to break through a back door at St Mark’s in Netherton, ransacked the church and wrote explicit graffiti on the walls. They smashed items that had been donated for the church’s anniversary and even emptied tins of biscuits over the floor and trampled on them. Shocked locals turned up for their weekly coffee morning at St Mark’s on Wednesday, May 29 to discover the damage. It is thought the intruders could have struck at the church, in Dartmouth Drive, any time following a service there on Sunday, May 26 as the building had been unoccupied between those dates. Although nothing has been reported stolen, what has made the break-in even more devastating for congregation members is that St Mark’s is due to celebrate 60 years of serving the Netherton community with a family fair in July - but all the items donated for the event such as

gift sets and vases were destroyed. They are now hoping to raise money to replace the items so the event can still goahead. A coffee morning regular who was one of the first to discover the break-in told the Champion: “They (the intruders) have used a big spade to get through the
back door and then smash everything up. They didn’t leave a thing untouched and they've wrecked vases, cups and gifts donated for our anniversary event. They even emptied a load of biscuits on the floor and then just trampled all over them. Continued inside
