ILLEGAL WASTE SITE SHUT DOWN IN DAWN RAID Report by Tom Martin

AN illegal waste site in Bootle was shut down in a dawn raid by the Environmental Agency. Six vehicles were seized and two people arrested during the raid. The joint operation, with Merseyside Police, targeted what was formally MWM Recycling Ltd, on Redfern Street, in the early hours of Tuesday, February 6 after they found out it was operating without an Environmental Permit and a waste carriers licence. The Bootle site was a permitted waste site under several different names - the most recent being MWM Recycling run by Patricia, Jeff and Mark Hills. It held an Environment Permit until 2016 when the Environment Agency dealt with their non-compliance using suspension notices and ultimately they had their permit revoked and were successfully prosecuted. Their waste carrier registration was also revoked. The six vehicles now seized by the Environment Agency can now be sold or destroyed if they are not claimed or no one is entitled to them Simon Hurst, an Area Environment Agency Environment Manager, said: “We take illegal waste very seriously and we will take every action, including seizing vehicles and arrests to stop it. Parents wait for ruling on Alfie THE parents of Alfie Evans face an agonising wait to see if a judge will allow Alder Hey Hospital to turn off his life support machine. Mr Justice Hayden has now heard evidence across seven days at Liverpool's Civil and Family Court from both sides and could reveal the fate of Alfie this week. The 20-month-old baby from Bootle has been in a coma for more than a year and doctors say any chances of treating him are futile. However, dad Tom Evans, 20, and mum Kate James, 21, are desperately fighting for his life and want to take him to Rome’s Bambino Gesu Paediatric Hospital in an attempt to cure his mystery illness. Mr Justice Hayden said last week that he won't be rushed into a decision and having heard everything from both sides, will take time to reflect on what he's been told. His decision could be revealed this week, but it could go on even longer, leaving Tom and Kate an anxious wait to learn of Alfie's fate. Tom has been representing himself in court and was commended by the judge for his passion and determination in trying to save his son's life. Over the course of the seven day trial, further details of Alfie’s condition emerged,

when an unnamed consultant treating him described his health as being a ‘semi-vegetative state’ and that he is ‘unaware and in a deep coma’. There were also scans submitted to the court, which show how Alfie's brain had already reduced by more than 70% of its normal size in August, and this was compared to fresh scans taken on Friday, February 2 which show how the disease has now destroyed even more of his brain.
