CASH & CARRY NIGHT SHIFT PAIR IN BOOZE SCAM Report by Kenny Parker
TWO cash and carry night shift workers from Bootle were caught stealing cases of booze after they were seen leaving the site in a hire van loaded with goods. Joseph Stafford, 29, of Akenside Street, and Steven Hughes, 28, of Hornby Road, both pleaded guilty to a charge of theft by employee between May 7 and May 31 of last year when they appeared at Sefton Magistrates Court on January 15. Natalie Cassidy, prosecuting, said that they were working at Parfetts Cash and Carry at Aintree Racecourse Retail and Business Park, where they had the job of preparing online orders over night for collection the following morning. Ms Cassidy said that Stafford, who does not drive, was seen on 26 occasions to select cases of alcohol and load them into Hughes’ car which was parked at the front entrance.

"The circumstances are that on each occasion they have then driven away and returned without the goods," she said. The court heard they were caught when the general manager arrived at work at 5.30am on May 31and saw the men leave the site in a hired van. On checking the CCTV he saw that prior to leaving the van had been loaded with cases of booze. The manager then checked previous CCTV and saw the other thefts. The total
value of alcohol stolen was £9,757.37. During a subsequent interview, Ms Cassidy said that Stafford, who had a previous conviction for burglary and theft from 2007, told police he had a debt but would not say who to. He over-ordered stock in order to steal, he admitted, but was not stealing to order. He would let people know when he “had the goods” which he would sell for £10 a bottle. Continued inside
