Metro Mayor marks first year in office

STATION MEMORIAL UNVEILED TO TRACK TRAGEDY YOUNGSTER Report by Tom Martin A NEW MEMORIAL has been unveiled at Bootle Oriel Road train station to a local youngster who died when he stepped on a live rail track. The memorial is a replacement statue after the previous one was wrecked by vandals last November. Stephen Nesbitt, who lived in Bootle, was just eight years old when he tragically stood on the railway line and lost his life in August 2003. On what would have been Stephen's 23rd birthday, the memorial statue was revealed at the station in front of his mum, Elaine, and Merseyrail’s managing director, Andy Heath along with pupils from Everton Free School who donated a bench to go alongside the memorial. It is hoped the memorial will act as a stark reminder for other children of the dangers of the railway lines. Elaine, who was left devastated when the previous memorial was wrecked, wanted to get a replacement and Merseyrail were able to redesign the memorial out of granite for greater durability. It features the original design of a little boy holding a ball, inspired by Stephen’s love of football and Everton FC.

Elaine said: “I was absolutely heartbroken when Stephen’s memorial was destroyed. It had been there for 14 years and was so well respected and cared for by everyone in our local community who knew and loved Stephen dearly. “People would often leave flowers there and nearby schools would take pupils along to it and give them lessons on rail safety. It was hugely important, not just to my family, but to everyone

who lived in Bootle and used the station. “I'm so happy that a new memorial statue has been placed at the station because it was always a popular feature there and a lot of people knew about it. “I asked for the unveiling to happen on what would have been Stephen's 23rd birthday so it was good that Merseyrail were able to arrange this. Animal Aid Charity, on County Road

Walton cat charity hits fundraising target to secure future of shop A CAT rescue charity based in Walton has taken a huge step in securing its future after they raised £20,000 to make their current base a permanent home. The Champion reported last month how volunteers from Animal Aid Charity, on County Road, were told by the building owner that the property had been placed on the market. It meant the charity faced an uncertain future unless they raised around £20,000 to help purchase the premises and become the new owners of the building. They have been busy fundraising and managed to raise nearly £17,000, and on Thursday, May 3 revealed they had hit their target following a generous £3,000 donation from a mystery person. A spokesperson for the charity said: “I've had a wonderful and long conversation with a gentleman, outside of Liverpool who was very interested in our appeal and the work we do. He asked us how much we needed to raise for the full deposit and then deposited £3,000 into our bank, ten minutes after our phone call. “He wants to remain anonymous so I'm obliged to honour that wish but even though he's not on social media we are so thankful for his help and kindness. We are now ready to pay our full deposit and the building is ours.”
