VIENTIANE – A NEW MEKONG VIBE

The International Jazz Festival Vientiane is now a major event in Southeast Asia. The festival draws thousands of jazz lovers and musicians from around the world. Champa Meuanglao spoke with Micka Perier, founder of the festival, to ﬁnd out what makes it such a success. INTERVIEW BY MAIR HYMAN PHOTOGRAPHS BY BART VERWEIJ

Good afternoon Micka. What inspired you? This city. For many years this town was a reserved place, but recently its intimate charm is no longer reserved for the lucky few. Laos is at the crossroads of ASEAN and a new magnet for communication. This festival is the child of a dream: to create a people-based event using parameters such as our zero-waste initiative and put Vientiane on the world jazz map. Why did you begin this festival? The first reason was selfish – I wanted to hear live jazz and live it. In a jazz concert the audience are not passive listeners. I wanted to create a magic Lao space for jazz. The very first time I put this together I knew I was onto something. Could you tell me something about the history of the festival? We started in 2015 in Sum Kai (La Cage du Coq), a French restaurant downtown. I was expecting a small turnout since jazz is relatively unknown here. But the place was packed with both Lao and foreigners. It was magic. It could no longer be a onetime festival and we needed a larger venue. Then we held the festival at Bar 79. At the end of the second year, 2017, we had gone from 200 participants to 450 and needed a larger space. That is when I finally found the dream location: The National Circus. It is important to understand the little-known jazz history of Laos. In fact, the great Duke Ellington played here in 1972. He ﬂew in and played for two nights on a whim. This is real ‘panache’, a ﬂight of fancy backed up with solid artistic and creative abilities. Panache is the heart of jazz.

And your new ‘dream location’? We got lucky. The National Circus was built in the late 1980s by the former Soviet Union. It is a marvelous tumbledown sort of place built with greying cement circus tent walls and you can feel the performing arts energy in it. Its mystery lies in its great acoustics. Our stage was built so people can dance in the arena. The festival is unique in how the public and the musicians interact. And the future of the festival? The future of the festival is linked to the needs of the community. Last year we invested in biodegradable glasses to eliminate plastic waste from the festival. We have banned cans and bottles – beer is sold on tap and drinking water is free of charge. Food will be served on biodegradable plates. These are constraints are costly, but that is our panache! This year we are involving more Lao musicians, giving workshops to local and foreign artists living here. We are bringing the khaen instrument, listed on the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage List, into our festival to highlight traditional Lao music. We intend to put Laos on the world map as a major cultural player. MARCH / APRIL 2019

While Luang Prabang is without doubt Laos’ top destination, Champa Meuanglao encourages travelers to go ‘one step beyond’ to Oudomxay. TEXT & PHOTOGRAPHS BY MICK SHIPPEN

eferring to someone as ‘provincial’ is a somewhat derogatory term, but when travelling in Laos it’s a label I am happy to wear. I consider myself provincial in the truest sense of the word – not uncultured, narrow-minded or lacking the sophistication of urbanites (although a few of my detractors might accuse me of such) – but as one who takes great pleasure in exploring the smaller towns and villages in this stunningly beautiful country. And so, embracing the opportunity to enjoy the north’s cool season, I decided to ﬂy direct to Oudomxay. More commonly referred to as Meuang Xay by locals, it’s a typically ramshackle provincial town; an incongruous mix of old and new, from tumbledown noodle shops to the most ostentatious homes, and a huge inﬂux of Chinese businesses and construction supply merchants. The most noteworthy attraction in the town centre is Wat Phou That. Timing my visit for late afternoon, I climbed the steep stairway and was rewarded with the sight of the sun setting behind an 18m standing golden Buddha image. From this elevated vantage point there’s also a good view across the rolling hills that encircle the town.

In the cooler months, mornings in Meuang Xay are pleasantly chilly and often cloaked in mist. A lover of local ﬂavors, I left the hotel and went in search of a warming soup. Elsewhere in Laos, pho noodles are the most popular way to start the day but in the north khao soi is the dish of choice. I found what I was looking for at an open-fronted coffee and noodle joint called Om Yim, directly opposite Leu Xay market. Khao soi is a nest of rice noodles topped with a Bolognese-type mixture made with pork, tomatoes and fermented soy beans. Add a squeeze of lime, a teaspoon of dried chilis, a handful of bean sprouts, and a scattering of fresh herbs and you have the breakfast of champions. Appetite sated, it was time for me to take a leisurely stroll to Thin market. Laos' fresh markets offer the opportunity to experience the bustle of daily life and provide insight into local food culture.

GETTING THERE Lao Airlines ﬂies direct daily from Vientiane to Oudomxay. GETTING AROUND Tuk-tuks are plentiful in Meuang Xay but for those who prefer more independence, scooters are available from Sunti Travel, located directly opposite Xaysana Hotel. They also oﬀer tours and cars with a driver. Tel: 020 55521579

At this time of year in Oudomxay, nor khom bamboo is abundant. While most edible bamboos are harvested in the rainy season from May to October, nor khom shoots are in season from December to April. The large shoots are dug out before they emerge above the ground and are prized for their sweet ﬂavour. Once the rains start, they grow larger and become extremely bitter and inedible, hence the name, nor khom or ‘bitter shoot’. This delicious ingredient is used in dishes such as kaeng nor khom sai kadouk moo, bamboo and pork rib curry. Thin market is open in the morning and afternoon. Market lovers should also head to the larger Maengda market, not far from the airport. Another advantage of rising early is to witness almsgiving. The daily merit-making ritual of offering food to monks, known as tak baat, starts at around 6.30 am. Unlike Luang Prabang, here in Meuang Xay it can be quietly witnessed from a respectful distance and without the hordes of snap-happy tourists.

THE ROAD TO MUANG LA For many visitors, Meuang Xay is used as a base for exploring the natural beauty of the province. With a hired scooter as my trusty steed, I decided to venture out on a 28 km ride to Meuang La. Heading north from Meuang Xay, the road winds its way through scenic forested mountain slopes and fertile valleys carpeted with rice fields, beans, pumpkins, and sweetcorn. Less than an hour away, Meuang La is an idyllic village at the conﬂuence of two rivers, the La and Phak. There is a great little morning market where you can tuck into local favorites such as freshly grilled pa phap, folded fish stuffed with herbs. The village is also home to the diminutive Pha Chao Singkham temple known for a golden Buddha image thought to date from the 14th century. Meuang La makes for a great half day trip but the are also places to stay in the village if you wish to experience rural life. Back in Meuang Xay I still had time for ambling around the side streets in search of somewhere to enjoy local food, plan tomorrow’s excursion, and raise a glass of Beerlao to the joy of being provincial!

WHERE TO STAY For those wanting to stay in the town centre, there is no shortage of reasonably priced hotels and guesthouses such as Xaysana Hotel, all within walking distance of restaurants, markets and attractions. There’s also 3-star accommodation at Charming Lao Hotel. The most impressive resort in the area, and one that has succeeded in putting Oudomxay province on the map as a getaway destination for families is Nam Kat Yorla Pa. Located on the edge of a protected forest area 17 km from Meuang Xay, the resort offers luxury pool villas overlooking picturesque river and forests, swimming pools, and a restaurant. The big attraction here, however, is its adventure park where guests, and also those not staying at the resort, can enjoy hiking, cycling and ATV tours, zip lining, rock climbing, and much more. There’s also a children’s activity center and a pool with slides. The original settlers in the region were Khmu and they are still the most numerous ethnic group in Oudomxay. Nam Kat Yorla Pa employs a team of 150 Khmu and has built an onsite village for them. It also means that the resort is making an important contribution to the local economy. Whether you are seeking luxury and relaxation in a peaceful setting or action and adventure, this fabulous destination resort is a one-of-a-kind experience in Laos. Further afield is Muang La Lodge, a lovely garden resort that will delight couples seeking seclusion, lazy mornings, candlelit dinners, and spa treatments with water from its own hot spring. Located beside the Nam Phak river there is also opportunity for exploring the area by bicycle or on treks. For those on a budget, there are also a couple of clean and comfortable guesthouses in town.

he Bolaven Plateau, an ancient volcanic landscape, is home to an abundance of waterfalls, coffee plantations, villages, and deep layers of forest. The plateau, in Southern Laos, is also home to Tad Tayicseua, one of the most beautiful falls in the area, which feels like one of the few places on earth that has yet to be exposed to the modern world. Trekking in this unexplored landscape is an experience I will never forget. Clambering through the pristine forests, I was amazed by the natural diversity. Exotic trees, fruits, leaves, and chirping birds. With the waterfalls hidden deep in the dense undergrowth, my party and I trekked on in anticipation. As we got closer, the first thing that hit us was the terrific noise of the rushing water. Eventually the canopy would give way to sunrays as the imposing falls revealed themselves, leaving us captivated. An incredible sheer wall of water.

TAD TAYICSEUA WATERFALLS TREK You can trek through the forests and explore as many of the 7 waterfalls in the area as you please. The full trail takes at least 3 hours, depending on your fitness level. Be sure to bring good footwear that can endure the altering terrain. Ja Rou Kiet Oak can be found at the viewpoint right on the campground and can be explored at either end of the trekking loop. It isn’t until you complete your descent that you truly understand the daunting presence of Kiet Oak. The rocks and boulders, exposed roots, and massive trees are the perfect canvas for the waterfalls crashing down aggressively on the massive boulders below. The rage of the falls is countered by the calming presence of the outgoing stream which you can follow for a more intimate experience with the falls. Alternatively, follow the sign near the restaurant to begin the official trek. As you begin, you will hear Ja Rou Ha Lang, perhaps the most magnificent waterfall of the Bolaven Plateau, calling out to you. You can go so close to the falls that you can cool off in the refreshing mist. The journey takes you through vividly coloured ﬂora and banana trees, which in the breeze seem to dance to the tune of the falling water. Ja Rou Ha Lang Waterfall at Tad Tayicseua

SOUTHERN LAOS

Continue the trek and you can explore more elusive waterfalls nestled deeper in the forest like Ja Rou Man Druen! Further on, the canopy of the forest will open completely and lead you out into open valleys with great swimming options – such as Ja Rou Tha La Leui. Immersing yourself in the cool water truly enhances the experience.

TAD TAYICSEUA HOMESTAY For a more personal touch, consider staying the night. The Tad Tayicseua Homestay offers a shared dormitory, tents, and private bungalows for guests. Dine at the open-air restaurant looking out into the forest, enjoying the cool night breeze and a night sky dotted with stars. The manager, Mr. Jaluna Keodakham, and his staff are effortlessly charming and welcoming. Despite my poor Lao, they managed to tailor the meals for us (and accommodate my South Asian dietary requirements) just as we wanted, regardless of the menu. The hospitality continued as our guide, Mr. Joy, took us through our adventures

You can unwind off the grid and reﬂect on your encounters with nature, but also meet the charming people of Laos, like those I had the privilege of spending the two days with.

GO DEEPER The path from Pakse to Paksong is home to the gorgeous Tad Etu, Champi, Fane, and Yeuang falls. Tad Etu (KM35) is home to the Falls View Resort and a powerful waterfall that will keep you on your toes. Tad Champi, just three km past Tad Etu, provides a serene picnic spot right by the calming falls. Take a dip in the calm waters or enjoy their raft. Across Tad Champi is a road that will lead you to the Tad Fane Resort and its huge twin waterfalls dropping dramatically into a massive gorge. Two km down the road, you will come across Tad Yeuang where you will be spoiled by the picnicking areas, and a beautiful waterfall surrounded by lush vegetation.

ELEPHANTS! TIPS ON HOW YOU CAN HELP LAO ELEPHANTS AND MAHOUTS

aos was known as the land of a million elephants. They have been used as beasts of war or burden, and until recent decades, for logging. Logging is extremely hard work both for elephants and their handlers, known as mahouts. Now tourism offers a better way of life for Lao elephants and mahouts. These days, while hundreds of Asian elephants remain in the wild in Laos, there are also a nearly equal number held in captivity. It would be preferable to release captive elephants back into the wild, but modern development, hunters and the density of and danger from human settlements means that this is not a straightforward solution. Elephants are expensive to keep and need to earn their living – they need food, health care and shelter. Unlike logging, working in tourism offers them an easier life and also helps to maintain the species, especially in Laos where elephants may otherwise disappear in 30 years. Recently, there has been a lot of controversy around elephant camps, tourism, and animal welfare because some camps use hooks, chains, and cruel training methods. Professional tourism elephant camps take account of the animals’ needs and nature. Elephants are social animals and need to interact with others as well as having exercise, regular bathing and good nutrition. Elephants need ﬁber and a variety of vegetation to eat. than 10% of their daily intake should be sugar, like bananas or sugarcane, because that is like chocolate for humans. There are various activities you can do when interacting with elephants, such as feeding, bathing, and walking with these wonderful animals. There are basically two types of elephant tourism – riding and non-riding camps. All have their merits and drawbacks, but, as we explain below, these might not be immediately obvious. The EU SWITCH Handle With Care project (implemented by GIZ) has been working with Travelife (an international NGO offering sustainability certiﬁcation for the tourism

industry) in developing a standard for animal welfare and elephant camps. We support programs for Elephant Friendly Mahout Training emphasizing humane training (implemented by the Human Elephant Learning Program, www.h-elp.org). We also work closely with elephant camp owners, tour operators, and tourism companies to promote higher standards of animal welfare in Lao tourism. We believe, that ‘abuse ends where knowledge begins’ and we would like to invite you to make your own informed decision when or if visiting Lao elephant camps. It is not a virtue to boycott elephant tourism, as this does not help the Asian elephant.

THREE ISSUES ABOUT ANIMAL WELFARE YOU SHOULD CONSIDER TO MAKE AN INFORMED DECISION 1. How can I tell I am visiting a good camp? Here are some tell-tale signs: o There will be an elephant camp standard created by Travelife for tour operators. This will be operational in late 2019 – look out for that once it is ready. o Elephants should look healthy – not too skinny, not too fat. There should be a certificate of veterinary care. Their skin should not show fresh or bleeding scars or marks from the saddles at riding camps. o Proper procedures should be in place, such as being asked to wash your hands to avoid passing disease to, and also from, elephants. Elephants should have daytime resting spaces in shade which should be on earth not cement. You should be briefed on safety and the camp should look clean and well attended to. o Information about the Asian elephant should also be displayed to educate about the elephant situation. 2. How to tell if an elephant is working with a good mahout o A well-trained elephant and mahout team understand each other well by using gentle pressure and voice commands. Hooks are unsharpened and used for tapping only.

3. Appropriate Tourist Elephant Interactions The presence of riding activities can’t be considered as a sign of bad animal welfare without further inquiry. Excellent elephant welfare may be achieved in camps proposing elephant riding while poor welfare may be observed in non-riding camps. RIDING: if you choose that option, should follow rules that consider animal welfare – so loads should not be too heavy, the saddle should not be on all day, but put on specially for prebooked tours, the rides should not be too long, over natural ground and shaded. NON-RIDING: if you choose that option, you should consider that it is a natural need for elephants to have sufficient daily exercise. If riding is not performed and if elephants are only used for feeding and bathing activities, they might develop health problems like obesity. WALKING and FEEDING: walking with or feeding elephants should be done in a safe manner – being close to any elephant could be dangerous for humans if the elephants are not properly controlled.

“W

hat on earth is that?” I asked my Lao foster daughter, pointing to a small ovoid green fruit (it could have also been a vegetable) that revealed pallid pink ﬂesh within. “It’s a Lao cucumber” she smiled. “Oh really.” Bending down I grasped one. Holding it under my nose, it did not smell like a cucumber. I have been going to Vientiane’s Saturday organic market since its inception. I can’t recall an occasion where I didn’t spot something I had never seen before, reminding me of Lao’s biodiversity, matched only by the diversity and courage in food tastes. Once held in the park next to the That Luang esplanade, it outgrew the location and relocated to the parking lot of ITECC Mall, conveniently accessible on city bus routes from suburban areas and from the Morning Market. For those only familiar with the historic downtown area, it may be a bit unnerving to travel out to, but take it from a cook, it’s really worth the effort. If you want to learn about the huge variety of things Lao people eat, if you want to see a sea of ethnically mixed, happily gossiping faces, if you want a really uplifting social experience not to mention great photo opportunities, this is a must.

It’s not for the faint hearted or the judgmental. There are baskets and bowls of live frogs, eels, fish, and a huge variety of larvae, and things with multiple legs. Lao people are true omnivores, so if you tend to be squeamish, or think your food comes only from the supermarket, then stay in bed, have a coffee, or visit a temple. I told a young Australian about the market, and she ranked it as her favourite Lao experience. "For once I did not feel like a tourist but was just hanging out being ‘normal’ with the locals, I got great photos of amazing stuff that really impressed my friends." Recently, I spotted what I thought were gooseberries. Northern Laos, enjoys cool and temperate weather, so grows strawberries, apples, nectarines, plums, and what I hoped were gooseberries. I began to gather some of the green spheres together. My daughter asked me if I had tried this fruit before, "Yes, gooseberries" I answered smugly. "Are you sure?" she smiled. I took a bite and the astringent taste puckered my mouth in. I quickly smiled at the giggling vendor and apologised, returning my mistaken gooseberries to the table. On the other side I found huge ducks, tasty roasted sausages, medicinal herbs like turmeric and moringa, and rows of snacks. Rice noodles, locally made yoghurt, crispy pork, crusty breads, and a huge variety of river fish. The market, being organic, is seasonal, so don’t expect broccoli or cauliﬂower or even carrots out of season. In September it’s a very green market, the tables piled with a huge variety of green vegetables, the only other color being the yellow bananas, mangoes and papaya. Expect to see edible ﬂowers, ferns, water plants, great bundles of galangal, soft fresh spring rolls stuffed with omelette, bundles of asparagus looking slim and fresh, piles of freshly harvested beans, silk-based shampoo, fresh passion fruit juice. Pineapples, coconuts, pumpkins, and eggs are sold from the backs of trucks. Strangely, few local expats bother going. I have never known why. Visiting the market is the highlight of my week, so I can make faces, laugh, and of course buy. MARCH / APRIL 2019

TAD HOUA KHON SEKONG Literally translated as “Waterfall of the Heads”, this spot lies oﬀ the eastern edge of the Bolaven Plateau. The Xe Namnoy river ﬂows over a wide rocky escarpment a few meters high providing a respite during the summer months.

TAD NAM SANAM KHAMMOUANE Near the village of Na Hin, on the Central Laos Loop, this waterfall is a bit of a hike from the main road, but its beauty as it cascades over tiers of rocks in lush jungle is really something to be experienced.

an Nayang village is a Tai Leu settlement, established several centuries ago in Luang Prabang province. The Tai Leu are one of the 50 ethnic groups in the Lao PDR. Because of its devout Buddhist culture, and its relative isolation until recently, Ban Nayang displays a living heritage where an age-old way of life still continues. Go there now and you will be among the privileged few to step back into their traditional way of life that you won’t find anywhere else. You will notice immediately the traditional architecture of wooden houses and the richly patterned clothing that people wear. Their thriving culture has been recognized by their highly-regarded handicraft tradition. You will often see the women, who are skilled weavers and dyers of natural cotton fabrics, beside wooden weaving looms as they proficiently embed their inherited folktales into their artwork. As suppliers to many well-known shops in Luang Prabang these artisans have enthusiastically adopted the “Handmade in Luang Prabang” label which has been initiated by the Luang Prabang Handicraft Association to promote the production of handmade products. This recognition helps them maintain their traditional craftsmanship through ensuring a sustainable income. When in Ban Nayang, do spend time walking through the alleys to see other craftsmen creating the most intricate baskets from bamboo which are designed for many tasks like trapping fish,

carrying vegetables, or even cooking rice. Here the sounds of working are merged with the sounds of nature, coupled with Buddhist chanting from the temple nearby. To promote Community Based Tourism (CBT) in Laos, the Department of Information, Culture, and Tourism (DoICT) and the EU SWITCH Asia Luang Prabang Handle with Care project have organized trainings and seminars to develop the tangible and intangible assets of Ban Nayang to help them meet the ASEAN CBT and the ASEAN Homestay Tourism Standards. Increasingly tourists have now started to visit Ban Nayang and enjoy the tranquility of village life, surrounded by some spectacular scenery. It’s now possible to stay overnight in one of the traditional wooden houses. You can also make a daytrip and observe handicrafts being created, help harvest the ingredients for your farm to table meal and see how everything is produced. You will see that the real treasure of the Tai Leu is their traditional lifestyle, the intangible things you cannot touch, but feel through all your senses. Yes, this place tells the history of Xieng Khouang – a tale of almost incessant wars, the former seat of the Phuan Kingdom, of peaceful and not so peaceful migration with China, Vietnam and Thailand, with trade routes crisscrossing the plateau that continue today, and mysteries such as the megalithic Plain of Jars – nominated for inscription on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Located just a short tuk-tuk ride from Phonsavan’s town centre, it takes up two ﬂoors of an impressive Lao style building, carefully renovated to house the new exhibitions and displays. The museum’s aim is to become a cultural hub – a beating heart – where locals, school kids, tourists, and international archaeologists can immerse themselves in the history and stories of Xieng Khouang, which, up until now, were not easily accessible.

GETTING THERE Lao Airlines has daily ﬂights to Phonsavan’s Xieng Khouang Airport from Vientiane. It is also possible to visit on a scenic overland drive from Luang Prabang.

Upon visiting the museum you’ll be greeted by friendly, helpful staff at reception who can show you how best to enjoy your visit. Take a wander around the first-ﬂoor displays on Xieng Khouang‘s prehistory, including the mysterious Plain of Jars, and the magnificent Phuan Kingdom that once ruled the plateau. You can’t help but be impressed by what you’ll find on the second ﬂoor. Here you’ll find one of the most insightful and concise exhibits on the Indochina Wars. There are also beautifully displayed fabric, clothing, musical instruments and artifacts belonging to the six main ethnic groups in Xieng Khouang. The struggle for an independent Laos is carefully and accurately portrayed. Four short movies play continuously in a purpose-built film room covering topics from cultural diversity and provincial attractions through to moving accounts of the Indochina Wars. The facilities are ideal for a wide variety of visitors. There’s a souvenir shop, teaching and meeting room, laboratory for curatorial work and research on objects or artifacts. The Xieng Khouang Provincial Museum is great for visitors wanting to dip into a bit of Lao heritage, or those wanting to dive deeper into local history. uang Prabang is well known for its restaurant scene with travellers and locals delighting in a wide range of local, western, and fusion food, catering to all budgets. One restaurant making a splash is the Pha Tad Ke Botanical Garden Cafe. Recently listed in Forbes Magazine’s World’s Ten Best ‘Farm to Table’ Dining Experiences, this cafe is located within the stunning Botanical Gardens.

‘Farm to Table’ is a growing social movement in the restaurant world. It generally refers to restaurants cooking with ingredients that are grown on site or locally, bought directly from local farms or at local farmers’ markets. The movement has a strong focus on education and Pha Tad Ke exemplifies this aspect with its various educational programs. Many of the ingredients used in the dishes served by the cafe are grown within the gardens, in the Organic and Educational Garden Installation, which visitors can visit while in the gardens. The menu is a selection of Lao dishes, expertly prepared by Chef Chan. The menu is chosen by the General Director of Pha Tad Ke, Rik Gadella, in consultation with Chef Chan. as laap (a salad of minced fish, chicken or tofu and lots of herbs), yam som oh (fresh pomelo salad with fried fish), nyam khao (rice salad with tamarind sauce and pork meatballs) and tam som (spicy papaya salad). Many of the dishes can be served vegetarian and Chef Chan can adjust the spice to accommodate those not yet fully immersed in local cuisine. Our tableâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s favorite dishes were kai khi hut (chicken stir fried with kaffir lime leaves) and yam som oh. Chef Chanâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s family run the famous Boat Landing Restaurant in Luang Namtha and it was here that she developed her cooking skills. The Boat Landing have their own cookbook, but since branching out by herself at Pha Tad Ke, Chef Chan has created her own book. Pha Tad Ke was visited by Chef Seng Luangrath of the famous Thip Khao restaurant in Washington D.C. While Chef Seng was in the gardens, she trained Chef Chan in meal presentation, so you can be sure that not only will your meal be delicious but worthy of the all important instagram post.

low-slung Chinese shophouse converted into a small, smart frangipani-framed hotel close to the most important Khmer ruins in southern Laos. What’s not to like? Pretty Champasak is the gateway to the petite pre-Angkorian ruins at Wat Phou, staggered up the side of a terraced ridge, and set in the shadow of a holy mountain. The small town is the perfect antidote to traffic-choked, wire-tangled nearby Pakse city, and is strung out along one road, which traces the lower Mekong River, with homes, shops, glittering Buddhist temples, and the odd eye-catching grand French-Colonial building — once palaces for the Lao Champasak royals.

Perfectly located in the middle of this sun-baked town is Residence Bassac. The hotel sits between the tiny ferry port at one end of town, and the Wat Phou ruins at the other. Once its pool opens, with winning views of the chocolate-colored Mekong, it’ll be the top hotel address in Champasak, and you’ll want to book in for an extra night just so you can spend a day lounging in the riverfront pool, cocktails — or a Beerlao — in hand. Previous visitors to Champasak will be familiar with the property. Formerly the Inthira, it was bought by the owner of Muang La Lodge, in Oudomxay province, a year ago and has been rebranded and upgraded. Restaurant Soum Noum is now less roadside diner and more Lao-Mediterranean cuisine focused, and with homemade bread, and ice cream on the menu, a solid cheese selection, a revamped wine menu which now features prosecco and cava; and the burgers are more robust, and made from Angus beef. Around 80 percent of

the food is locally sourced manager Ronald Henskens tells me. Restaurant tables at Residence Bassac are perfect for people watching. Open-fronted Soum Noum faces the main street with a couple of sun-dappled tables out front framed by frangipani trees. Eating croissants and passion fruit jam, and sipping Lao coffee for breakfast while the odd motorbike, Lao women with umbrellas, or uniformed schoolchildren on bicycles mosey on by, is a gentle introduction to the cooler mornings before the intense heat strikes after 9 am. At the other end of the day, the Bassac is illuminated with lanterns and candles and the trees are lit up giving the place a warm, inviting glow. Residence Bassac’s rooms are off the road and set behind the main building along brick paths around a small garden plot. The four Deluxe Duplex and four Deluxe rooms are all patterned with pretty French colonial tiles, and bright cushions, and come with noise-free ceiling fans, large beds, bespoke furniture, bathtubs, and powerful showers.

The deluxe duplexes feature mezzanines, and each has balconies with mountain views whereas the one-story Deluxe rooms enjoy ground-ﬂoor terraces. Families who need privacy will want the Deluxe Duplex rooms with the downstairs sofa-bed available; otherwise, I prefer the garden Deluxe rooms. LAO AIRLINES OFFICIALLY OPENS SHANGHAI AND WENZHOU ROUTES

In order to support the activities of Visit Lao-China Year 2019, Lao Airlines has inaugurated new direct flights to major cities in China with Vientiane-Shanghai and Vientiane-Wenzhou in order to facilitate tourists traveling between Laos and China. The Shanghai flight began on 28 January 2019 and will expand to four flights per week. Shanghai is the most developed metropolis in China. It has modern safe transportation and many tourism sites, including European architecture on the Bund, shopping areas, ancient temples, and even a Disneyland, which is a big international draw. The flight to Wenzhou flies only on Sundays. Wenzhou is an important industrial city, producing machinery, electronics, as well as leather products like bags and clothing.
