ince ancient times, the Lao lunar calendar has celebrated traditional holidays, one per month, in a cycle  called Hit Sip Song (the twelve traditions). These are celebrated in different ways in different areas of the country, with some of these rituals nearly disappearing. Get a deeper look at how Lao people honor their customs and build karma throughout the year.

After the harvest ends, Lao people traditionally made merit to the rice spirits, so that they could have a plentiful harvest the next year. This is still famously celebrated with large ceremonial haystacks in Phieng District, Xayaboury Province.

This is a large event throughout Laos. Each temple celebrates on different days. In the ceremony, monks chant the ancient story of the generous King Vessantara, who is believed to be a previous incarnation of the Buddha. Locals celebrate with village parades to their temple to make merit, listen to the tale, and make offerings.

ບຸນປີ ໃໝ່ Lao New Year falls in the middle of April. Traditionally, everyone in Laos makes merit with family, cleans their home, and sprinkles water over Buddha images, elders, and monks to build karma. In modern times, this has evolved into a three-day water fight during the hottest month of the year. A Miss New Year pageant is held and the winner paraded through town, representing one of seven daughters of a mythical god. The best spot for both traditional and modern sides to this festival is in Luang Prabang.

The three month Buddhist Lent begins in July, which also coincides with the rainy season in Laos. Monks are required to stay in one temple for the duration, which comes from an old practice of wandering monks inadvertently trampling farmers’ crops during the growing season. Lao people make certain to give alms on this morning.

In the past, Lao people would make merit to protector spirits of their village, and to ask them to drive out evil and protect the happiness and prosperity of the people for the next year.

T

he Wat Phou Festival or Boun Wat Phou is the highlight of the year for Champasak District; a three-day fiesta held as part of the Makha Bouxa Buddhist Festival. The celebration is held on the full-moon day of the third lunar month because Buddha is said to have taught the core teachings of Buddhism (cease from evil, do good, and cleanse your mind) during this time. The story goes that on this day, long ago, in India, numerous followers of Buddha came to see him on their own initiative. They were then ordained as teachers and became “enlightened ones.” Although celebrated annually, the actual festival date changes. This year, it will start on the 17th of February and will culminate on the 19th. Boun Wat Phou is the largest festival in Southern Laos. People take part in various activities during the three-day celebration. These include sound and light shows, processions, recitals, chanting, and most importantly, praying. There are also volleyball and petanque competitions for the more adventurous attendees. There are even elephant processions, traditional dancing, and concerts. Wat Phou, which translates to “mountain temple”, was initially dedicated to Shiva, one of the gods of the Hindu Trimurti. The unique layout of Khmer architecture found at Wat Phou gained it the UNESCO World Heritage label in 2001. What most people don’t know is that while the temple reflects the religious beliefs and economic approaches of Khmer construction and was initially built for Hindu worship, it was later converted to an active Buddhist sanctuary and remains so to this day. Wat Phou, along with the lesser known Khmer temples in Southern Laos (Um Tomo, Hong Nang Sida, and Temple of Thao Tao) were built as early as 10th century BC, during the reign of Yasovarman I or the Leper King. Although there is little left of the Ancient Road going toward Angkor Wat in Siem Reap, you can learn of its fascinating history at the Wat Phou museum. The magnificent Wat Phou is located 10km from Champasak’s town center. The Wat Phou complex is the cultural heart of a wider historical landscape on the plains of Champasak District, ranging from the Mekong River to the Phou Kao Mountains.

For those looking for activities away from the crowd, cycling around Champasak and crossing to Don Daeng is your best option. There, on the little sandy island, you can have a perfect contrast to the festivities on the other side. Don Daeng is 8km long, with rice fields in the middle surrounded by villages. Peaceful and quiet, you can spend countless days basking in the sun like the water buffaloes scattered along the sand. For accommodation, there are great options to choose from based on your budget, from homestays to the up-market La Folie Lodge. A single trail follows the perimeter of the island, so it’s difficult to get lost. If you want a more guided route, there are free cycling maps available at the local tourism office (Pakse, Champasak, and Don Daeng). Start your year right and visit Champasak on your next vacation. Don’t just take my word for it. Go experience true southern charm yourself.

eld within the snaking embrace of the Saigon River, Ho Chi Minh City is on the move. Its once low-rise skyline now pierced by the 258-meter Bitexco Financial Tower and super-tall 461-meter Landmark 81 signal lofty ambitions. Visitors to the city are often surprised by its modernity. Yes, colonial-era gems from the early 1900s such as the Central Post Office, the imposing People's Committee Building (formerly the Hôtel de Ville) and Notre Dame Cathedral still stand and continue to draw crowds. There are also hidden apartment buildings such as 14 Ton That Dam, earmarked for demolition but, thanks to the city’s young artsy crowd, given a new, albeit temporary, lease of life by retro-style cafés and quirky boutiques. However, this is not a city that cares much for nostalgia. As the economic powerhouse of the country, the metropolis has long acted as a magnet, pulling in workers from around the country. The populations’ disconnect has clearly worked in Ho Chi Minh City’s favour and there is a willingness to accept change and move boldly forward.

CUISINE MOI 2

The migrant population has influenced the food of HCMC and it is said you can find all Vietnam’s diverse regional dishes here. Wander down alleyways or hems in districts such as Dien Bien Phu and you will discover colourful markets and open-fronted restaurants. While traditional dishes served street-side such as banh mi baguettes, sizzling ban xeo stuffed crepes and the ubiquitous pho beef noodle soup abound, the scene today is much more cosmopolitan than in the staid capital of culture, Hanoi. One local chef breaking new ground is Peter Cuong Franklin. Less than two years ago, after success in New York, London and Hong Kong, Peter returned to his native Vietnam to open Anan, a distinctly modern restaurant located on Ton That Dam Street in the heart of one of the city's oldest markets. Here, Peter serves up Cuisine Mới, or New Vietnamese Cuisine; creative interpretations of classics such as fresh and vibrant banh xeo tacos filled with pork, shrimp, vermicelli, fresh herbs and peanut sauce, Saigon shaking beef, an enticing mix of succulent Australian tenderloin, tomato, watercress, bell peppers and shallots, and Dalat pizza with a unique rice paper crust liberally sprinkled with local herbs. While respectful of his rich food heritage, Peter is a culinary catalyst for change in Ho Chi Minh City and an inspiration for a new wave that will undoubtedly follow in his wake. Anan translates as ‘eat, eat’. That’s sound advice in this cool and creative restaurant.

Few cities in Southeast Asia have embraced the craft beer trend more enthusiastically than HCMC. In recent years, a number of local and expat brewers have started microbreweries. One of the most popular is Heart of Darkness. Founder John Pemberton and his team brew a wide selection of draft beers for a core range and limited releases which are served in an intimate bar setting at 31D Ly Lu Trong in District 1. Heart of Darkness also supplies other venues with draft and bottled beers that carry distinctive labels and quirky names such as Loose Rivet New England IPA, Futile Purpose Cucumber Pilsner, and Sacred Fire Golden Ale. For the once enthusiastic homebrewer, it’s been a remarkable success story. Heart of Darkness beers are already available countrywide and there are plans to extend the reach through the region. Within the city, BiaCraft have several great venues where you can discover the incredible variety of local and imported ales. Other craft beer brewers in the city include Pasteur Street Brewing and East West Brewing Company. JANUARY / FEBRUARY 2019

Ho Chi Minh City’s traffic is notoriously chaotic with swarms of motorcycles darting in all directions and cars bumper to bumper at rush hour or during a heavy downpour of rain. Thankfully a much-needed metro system is currently under construction, although the first phase is not scheduled to be completed until at least 2020. In the meantime, the city’s savior is GrabTaxi. Download the app and you can quickly get a price and book a taxi or motorcycle which will arrive in minutes. There’s also Go-Viet, although it only offers a motorcycle taxi service. When arriving at the airport, opt for a metered Vinasun taxi outside the main terminal. Despite the traffic mayhem, Ho Chi Minh City’s broad avenues and narrow alleyways make it an extremely walkable city. Rise early and head out the hotel door. Exploration awaits.

n a bustling workshop in the backstreets of inner city Vientiane, agile fingers are hard at work and eyes are trained closely on the task at hand. The fine silk flows liberally as a team of mainly female employees hailing from across Laos work their chosen material into intricate and attractive patterns. Creations emerge gradually in a wide range of original and inspired designs that promise comfort, style and timeless value to their prospective purchasers. While the high quality Lao silk found inside is most typically seen in skirts, blouses, scarves and more, it is true to say that the durable textile that passes through this special workshop shall never be worn as apparel. Instead, it’s carpets that these skilled craftspeople are busy creating. Weaving timeless enchantment and opportunity into the lives of all those it touches, Magic Lao Carpets combines Laos’ ancient and authentic silk traditions with the famed techniques of central Asia. Their exquisite hand-made piles and flatweaves (kilims) emerge from high quality hand-spun silk, dyed with natural vegetable based techniques to create timeless pieces. Production comes together under the keen, yet kind, gaze of Laos’ own Souvita Phaseuth (Lani)

and her husband Ismit, a native of Turkmenistan, where carpet-making is woven deeply into the culture. For the past two decades in Laos, they have drawn on countless years of accumulated wisdom to help provide stable and safe employment opportunities for a workforce of Lao young women, including those with disabilities. “One of our main goals has always been to provide Lao girls with skills and a vocation that will help them to improve their lives,” Lani explains. “In addition to attitude, they must have a feel for the craft, an artistic sense to love this job. If they have that, then they are able to stay on with us for as long as they want.” It isn’t just the techniques and hard skills that are transferred to employees, but also the values that have helped to make the business a success. Lani says while the cost of fine carpets and kilims can add up depending on attributes, they prove treasured heirlooms that transcend generations. “Carpets are investments that increase in value over time,” Lani explains. Customer satisfaction includes a guarantee as well as a willingness to sit down and craft a design that suits. “If our clients want something, exclusive or unique, or anything they want, we can do it for them.” No matter which piece captures your heart, Magic Lao Carpets provides the very best tapestry with a positive impact woven right in. hile meat dishes are privileged in much of Lao cuisine today insofar as it is seen as a representation of social status, it was a privilege indulged by very few in the past. Many years ago, Lao people, especially in the northern parts of the country, typically ate what they could hunt and forage. As it was more often the case that wild animals were harder to come by, and that plants were more readily procurable, a small number of vegetable-heavy dishes have sprung up and are quite widely celebrated today despite the high availability of meat. Enter Joop Puk, an original Xieng Khouang salad comprising, very much in the spirit of meat-scarce times, anything that is currently available on the market such as long beans, mushrooms, bamboo shoots, and sesame seeds. But the beauty of the dish is that the preparer has creative license to put any seasonally available vegetables like wild paddy field vines and exotic gourds into the mix. Once a thoughtful trickle of fermented fish sauce (padek) is infused into the salad, this pescatarian-friendly invention is sure to appeal to all tastes buds alike.

hen Je Sung-uk first came to Laos in 2012, baseball did not exist. The landlocked nation saw its first baseball team only in 2013 after Je mobilised around ten people who had an interest in playing the American sport beginning with practice sessions at one of the car parks in the capital city Vientiane. Despite its short history, the progress it has made is remarkable. More than 100 Lao people now enjoy the previously non-existent sport in the country. With a government-backed baseball federation only being established last year, there are already three teams participating in the domestic baseball league. Moreover, Laos dispatched a national team to the 2018

Asian Games in August. It was the first time that the Laos baseball team participated in an international match. Je has played a core role in this journey. Apart from recruiting and training Lao baseball players, he also focused on attracting help from both inside and outside. He is currently serving as a foreign cooperation director representative of the national baseball team of Laos in the federation. Je recalled that 2014 was the turning point. It was when Lee Man-soo, a former South Korean baseball player and the coach for professional baseball team SK Wyverns, and a foundation he had set up joined hands with Je to support and nurture the baseball industry in Laos. One of the first things Lee did was to upgrade the gear for the Lao players. He donated baseball equipment including uniforms, bats, balls and shoes worth about 10 million South Korean won (8,800 US dollars). Lee recruited and dispatched staff members from South Korea to Laos to provide players with professional training. A range of different South Korean government organizations, including the Korea International Cooperation Agency, or KOICA, also made contributions. Efforts made by Je and Lee have borne fruit in terms of attracting domestic recognition. The Lao government is eager to provide administrative support while local media outlets have always flocked to report on any events organised by the federation. Staff members of the Lao government and Vientiane-based embassies show support by often attending to toss the opening ball for federation matches.

“THERE HAS BEEN AN INCREASING NUMBER OF PEOPLE WHO SHOW THEIR INTERESTS IN BASEBALL ” Of course, there is a long way to go. Je cited a lack of baseball infrastructure in the country including a baseball stadium. The Lao baseball players are still currently practising in car parks and on university grounds. The federation is presently in talks with the Lao government, and the first baseball stadium is expected to be constructed in Vientiane soon, he noted without giving an exact timeline. Je also laid out plans for the Lao players to gain more international experience by participating in matches with foreign players. One of the upcoming matches is the annual Korea-Lao International Baseball Match, with the opening toss scheduled to be thrown in January this year. About ten amateur baseball teams from South Korea are expected to compete in the tournament with the Lao teams. In addition to this, the Lao national team also plans to participate in an international league in the Philippines in August. Despite this remarkable achievement in a few short years, it is fair to say the baseball industry in Laos is still in its infancy. Most of the baseball players are part-time, and there is no proper ladder that aspiring professional baseball players could climb. In other words, it is a little premature to expect to see a baseball player achieving a professional career yet. However, Je is positive about the future growth of the sport. “There has been an increasing number of people who either show their interests in baseball or hoped to play it after the Asia Game match,” said Je. A famous saying notes, mighty oaks from little acorns grow. JANUARY / FEBRUARY 2019

tepping into Sailomyen Café and Hostel is to enter into a living, breathing Instagram account. Like many of its contemporaries emerging in Vientiane, Sailomyen is part of a quiet but intensifying design revolution, with its atmosphere as much to be soaked up as its coffee. Looking around, I can see every corner and every space has been uniquely and purposefully designed to complement the industrial loft feel. Utilitarian and raw, yet dotted with vintage items and lush green ferns, new life has been thoughtfully breathed into this preloved building. As I sit and wonder about the history, I am warmly greeted by Desa Latsavong, or Bee as he is known, the young man responsible for the venture. Bee has a broad, infectious smile, which never leaves his face as he dives right into the Sailomyen story.

Bee grew up under the watchful eye of his mother, a hardworking Vietnamese migrant who arrived in Laos shortly after the revolution, and set to work building a future. Bee spent his childhood helping out in the family noodle shop and running the family guesthouse. But as is often the case, it takes the unique perspective of the next generation to breathe new life into the dreams of their forebears. And while taking a hospitality management course in Thailand, Bee began to think about the future of the family guesthouse, which was in decline. “When I came back from Thailand, there was a huge for rent sign out the front. My mom wanted to get rid of it.” Not to be discouraged, Bee set out to turn the flailing family guesthouse business around. “We had the guesthouse already. We had the building already. And the café was my passion. So I thought this could go well together. I called mum and asked to take the sign down.” Taking inspiration from hostels he’d visited during travels around the world, Bee decided to knock down the walls, throw in a coffee machine downstairs, and convert the back rooms into a hostel. Unlike the café, which could rely on the grapevine of young Lao coffee drinkers, the

hostel business meant traversing the world of guidebooks and booking websites. But Sailomyen gets consistently good reviews. And it’s little wonder, for even in the midst of our interview, Bee was busily giving directions and offering his friendly assistance to the hostel guests as they passed by. Sailomyen Café and Hostel offers fully air-conditioned dorm rooms with luggage lockers and USB ports at every bunk, as well as free Wi-Fi. The building has been cleverly designed to include little hangout spots, like the rooftop balcony and the terrace downstairs, where travelers can socialize or take in the city views. The newly renovated rear building features spacious, private rooms with comfortable, double beds, and is more like a hotel than any hostel! Room rates even include a free breakfast served in the café downstairs. JANUARY / FEBRUARY 2019

lthough the old adage may warn against mixing business and pleasure, the Pullman Luang Prabang is one exception to the rule. And while the the charming town of Luang Prabang sees new accommodation options open each year, many hotels focus on either leisure or business travelers. The new Pullman Luang Prabang, however, is truly the best of both worlds. Pullman Luang Prabang, with 123 rooms, stands out as being the largest hotel in the city, yet due to its clever design feels as cozy and intimate as a private estate. The 16 hectare property is blessed with green rice terraces, while forested mountains crest

into view from every direction in the hotel, bringing a sense of peace and natural calm. A perfect destination for MICE (Meeting, Incentive, Conference, and Exhibition) travelers, Pullman’s meeting facilities are second to none in Luang Prabang. With cutting edge multimedia equipment, a state of the art kitchen, and space for breakout sessions, anything from formal meetings to society galas are well catered for. The hotel is not simply for MICE travelers, but actually perfect for families, as well. Three swimming pools, and even a pool slide, dot the property. There is also a state of the art fitness center, and even a Kid’s Club fully stocked with toys, games, and staff on hand to teach crafts and look after the children. There are so many activities available for all energy levels – including Tai Chi, Power Walking, Yoga, Water Polo, and even Lao Language lessons. Pullman’s rooms also offer a supreme level of comfort. The contemporary Lao décor takes the heritage that Luang Pra-

bang is known for, and makes thoughtful modern twists, offering a supreme level of comfort and enjoyment for the modern traveler. Grand verandas offer vistas of the hotel’s rice fields and the mountain peaks beyond. The entry level Deluxe room category is 42 sqm, and feels amply spacious. Other categories are even larger and the top-of-the-line room has two bedrooms and a private pool, for the extra comfort and privacy. Pullman abides by a “kitchen to table” philosophy at the hotel’s all-day dining restaurant, L’Atelier. Through a number of live cooking stations, guests can see what goes into their food and interact with the people who make it. This holistic approach to cooking brings the guests closer into the process and leaves them with a greater appreciation for the ingredients and skill required to create it. Soon, the hotel’s organic Spice Garden, covering several hectares, will produce a large quantity of the vegetables and herbs used in the hotel. With its plentiful activities, comfortable space, attention to detail, and superior service, Pullman Luang Prabang excels in every way. There’s never been a better place to mix business and pleasure, so whether visiting on business or relaxing with family, a stay here is a full experience in itself.

SPIN Fanglao blends breakdance with traditional and contemporary dance. TEXT BY MELODY KEMP PHOTOGRAPHS BY VAN HAI

s it becomes a more bustling and vibrant capital, Vientiane is also becoming the nation’s performance hub. Many of the city’s bars and restaurants bring live music and wide ranging discussions to interested audiences, and for a modern dance performance there is Fanglao, one of the region’s best dance troupes, which was founded by Lao choreographers Ounla “Kaka” Pha Oudom and Noutnapha “Nout” Soydala in 2013. It’s easy enough to characterise them as a breakdance group, and yes they are proud of that tradition. But Fanglao blends breakdance and its mad, mind blowing physics, with traditional and contemporary dance. And rather than lots of clever acrobatics, each dance is choreographed and tells a story. They are sardonic and astute observers of the human condition, playing out games in dance. One recent performance was about male relationships; the smiles followed by a shoulder shove, plying out the tension, the ambiguity.

Not only are the night’s performances symbolic, strong and breathtakingly courageous, they are invariably physically skillful. Fanglao combines breakdancing with Lao finger-stretching traditional dance, to bring fluidity and variability to what can be eye spinning gymnastics. There are some moves that leave me wondering how the hell did he or she do that? Their balance can be so elegant that they mock us by pretending to rock and fall. But in reality their toes grip the edge of the props like a gecko, while they center their mass like Frank Gehry. While some may dismiss breakdancing as without form, clever rather than artistic, chaotic not classical, to understand the superlative control of mass, friction, torque, acceleration and in particular angular momentum, to name a few of the forces, is to understand the genius of the genre. Typically break-dancers stand in a circle and call in each other in as a challenge to outdo his or her predecessor. Fanglao takes the style but not the format, so, as one dancer named Gumball explained, the breakdance move is the rotational spin on one hand, the contemporary additions are the how the move resolves and designs into a different kind of fluidity. Dancers like to engage the audience at the end of each performance, sitting with a breathless ease that belies the extraordinary feats of the last hour. ‘When I dance I feel good,’ says Ole Khamchanla, one of the group’s mentors and a French-speaking choreographer. Nout, his female counterpart, hugs her folded legs in agreement. He is straight faced, serious minded with a streak of mischief that emerges later, she is open and shining and she says has been dancing since 2008. “We want to make dancing a career for young Lao people. To teach them teamwork, diversity and the value of creativity over accumulation. Dance parallels life, but is also a solution.”

Lao Airlines, together with Hunan Xiangfeng International Aviation Services, held a ceremony last month to inaugurate the new Luang Prabang to Changsha route, which will fly from Luang Prabang Airport in Laos, to Changsha, China and back.
