STRATEGIC MARKETING PLANNING John Branch

Nike told us to Just Do It! But when it comes to marketing, this could be the worst advice ever. Indeed, success in ‘going to market’ does not come from making blind guesses, flipping a coin, or jumping in without thinking. Instead, it is the result of methodical, logical, and data-driven decisions… in other words, strategic marketing planning. The purpose of this course, therefore, is to elevate the introduction to marketing course tot he strategic level, by situating the foundational concepts and theories of marketing into a step-by-step planning framework.

Biography John Branch currently teaches a variety of marketing and international business courses at the undergraduate, MBA, and executive levels at the Stephen M. Ross School of Business at the University of Michigan (USA), and serves as Co-Director of the Yaffe Digital Media Initiative. CONSULTING THE C-SUITE Jan Jacobs

If you want to be listened to in your company, become their external consultant” … Why is that? When formulating Strategy, many C-level executives will work with trusted advisors and experts that guide them in defining the corporate direction and ambition. Just like the Consigliere to the Godfather, strategy consultants do not have Capo’s or Soldiers working for them. They have no formal or hierarchical power. But they will be listened to when giving advice and be appreciated in the perspectives they offer. So how do consultants go about it? What is their approach? What are the processes they follow and the models they apply? How do they navigate the corporate corridors to achieve the client’s goals as well as their own? Discover the different consulting purposes and how they are distinct from one another. This course examines the various aspects of the consulting business, what the added value is versus what corporate clients expect and some of the keys to success. Finally, as many individuals see consulting as a second career at some point in their lives, find out if this presents a natural fit and an appealing step for yourself.

ALTERNATIVE VISIONS OF GLOBAL ECONOMY Julius Horvath

This course discusses the evolution of alternative economic and political views concerning globalization. Two predominant understandings influenced the modern discussion. The first one was reflected in the protest marches of anti-globalization activists, in whose view globalization has hurt the poor, has been bad for the environment, and advanced narrow interests of the more developed lands. The predominant second view emphasized the contribution of the efficiency of globalization processes to the world economy's growth and, consequently, gradual eradication of absolute poverty. Furthermore, in light of the recent events, we also discuss the current deglobalization tendencies, which emerged, to a smaller extent, due to Covid-19 and the increasing economic influence of the non-Western world, but mainly as a reaction to changing geopolitical situations. We summarize views on the global economy and world order from different centers of world power, especially the Western world, Russia, China, and other large countries. In addition, we also glance over visions of some smaller European countries.

Biography Julius Horvath is Professor and the former Department Head at CEU Department of Economics and Business as well as Professor at Department of International Relations. He is CEU Professor from 2005 and Hungarian University Professor from 2009. He is a member of Academia Europea from 2016. His main interest lies in international economic policy issues, political economy of monetary relations, and history of economic thought. Prof. Horvath has published in journals such as Journal of Comparative Economics, Contemporary Economic Policy, Applied Economics, Economic Systems, Journal of Economic Development, Journal of Quantitative Economics, Journal of Economic Integration, Nationalities Papers, Journal of Economic Interaction and Coordination. He has also published chapters at publishing houses as Lexington Press, Edgar Elgar, Kluwer Academic, Duncker and Humblot. He was a Member of the Slovak and Czech Accreditation Committees, and the Chair of the Slovak Economic Association. He serves on the editorial boards of 11 academic journals. He has recently published two books on the history of economic thought in Central Europe and in Slovakia. The first book was published, in 2020, by Palgrave Macmillan, and the second in 2022 by Routledge. To participate in this course, register at: emba.ceu.edu/MissMyCEU
