Dear Member,
Welcome to July and welcome to our members who joined or renewed their support during our June Membership Campaign. Your support makes everything we do possible – from local productions to educational initiatives to PBS programming – it’s all available to the communities we serve because of you. Thank you.
Thank you as well to everyone who attended CET is ME at MadTree Brewing last month. It was an evening of activities, food and fun as we honored four community heroes in the Cincinnati arts.
This month we celebrate 70 years of CET, the first licensed public television station in the United States. WCET began broadcasting on July 26, 1954, from a converted closet on the third floor of Music Hall! We’ve come a long way since then and we look forward to continuing to serve the people of Southwest Ohio. Our education department has completed work on Ohio Learns 360 (OL360), the statewide initiative that accelerated learning for Ohio students in grades K-5 with free resources for after-school and summer programs as well as families at home. Our last OL360 webinar is about fighting the “summer slide” and is available on our ThinkTV YouTube channel. We also have some amazing resources for kids who are home for the summer — visit the Education and Kids & Family sections of our websites for more information.
Our production team continues to work on our community affairs program, Brick by Brick: Solutions for a Thriving Community. New podcasts are uploaded bi-weekly and the producers would like your feedback. Visit the Brick by Brick page on our websites to listen to the podcasts and let us know what you think about the
housing crisis and what a thriving community looks like to you.
Wonderful programming from PBS is coming your way this month. A Capitol Fourth, now a 46-year tradition, returns to honor our country’s birthday with an all-star salute from Washington, D.C. NOVA’s Sea Change is a threepart series about a sea within a sea, which is warming 99 percent faster than the global ocean. Hotel Portofino returns for Season 3 and finds Bella preparing for her father and sister’s arrival.
I am often asked, “What sets Public Television apart from all the other broadcast services available?” The answer is simple: It is our commitment to produce local programming that is meaningful for families and future generations, our engagement with the communities we serve and, most of all, the educational services we provide to our students, teachers and life-long learners. This is why your support makes such a difference. Thank you!

Now is the perfect time to catch up on episodes of SHOWCASE with Barbara Kellar! Head over to our website at CETconnect. org/showcase/ or the PBS app to access all of the episodes you may have missed on broadcast. Whether you’re captivated by the artistry of a particular guest or simply want to explore the diverse talents featured on the series, our online archive has you covered.
Rosemary, an educator of 25 years, has been a member of ThinkTV for 33 years. She began watching PBS cooking shows in the 1980s, before Food Network was established.
As we gear up for the new 2024-25 arts season, we’re thrilled to announce that new broadcast episodes of SHOWCASE with Barbara Kellar will resume in September. Stay tuned for a fresh lineup of inspiring guests and captivating stories to kick off the season in style.
In the meantime, the series continues to air every Saturday on CET and Sunday on CET Arts, providing you with a weekly dose of creativity and culture until the new season begins. Thank you for joining us on this artistic journey, and we can’t wait to bring you more unforgettable moments on SHOWCASE with Barbara Kellar in the months to come!
Rosemary accesses ThinkTV Passport almost daily and her family watches ThinkTV up to three times per week. She loves the many options of programming available to watch. Doc Martin is her favorite program of all time because of the beautiful Cornwall setting, interesting cast of characters and surprising plots. She and her family are also Martin Clunes fans and love watching Martin Clunes: Islands of the Pacific. Another current favorite of hers is The Great American Recipe because of the way the show illustrates the diversity of American culture through food. When Rosemary and her husband began their parenting journey, they were committed to providing their family with quality educational television. This inspired her to donate to ThinkTV Rosemary believes in the power of education and equity of access, and their membership helps sustain PBS programming.
On July 26, 1954, CET broadcast its very first show – TelA-Story. Broadcast out of the then Dexter Hall, now Corbett Tower, at Music Hall, this program at Music Hall, this program was designed for teachers and students and marked the beginning of a proud and exciting history for Cincinnati’s public television station. A year later, in 1955, the FCC issued CET the first non-commercial, educational television license in the country. It would be another 12 years before the Public Broadcasting Act would pass, creating the Corporation for Public Broadcast and the Public Broadcasting System. Thank you for 70 amazing years!
ThinkTV was excited to participate in the Montgomery County Educational Service Center’s “Find Your Grind” Lifestyle Fair in May. We set up a The Art Show-style set, green screen, monitor, camera and lights to help students see what kind of work we do in our industry. Representatives from our production and communication teams were present to talk about our careers and give middle-school students a day-in-the-life glimpse into their local PBS station.
For the past two years, CET and ThinkTV have participated and led in Ohio Learns 360, the statewide effort designed to accelerate learning through afterschool and summer programs. One key component of the program is “Camp-in-a-Box,” a series of standardsaligned classroom kits, written by CET and ThinkTV education staff. These kits provide out-of-school-time providers with curriculum and materials that support one to two weeks of enrichment activities for up to 20 students.
Each Camp-in-a-Box covers a different topic for either grades K-2 or grades 3-5. Some of the 14 camps include: Design Squad, Animal Adventures with the Wild Kratts, Nature Camp, Solar System Camp, All About Air, What’s Your Superpower?, Math is Art and Be Creative. Educators just need to complete a one-hour, Ohioapproved training course to receive a kit. The project concluded in June and Ohio PBS stations distributed nearly 6,000 Camp-in-a-Box kits across the state. The kits have impacted at least 150,000 students to date — including urban, rural and suburban students — and have provided more than 4,000 out-of-school-time providers with professional development and additional tools needed to support their students’ growth.
We had a fabulous time recording an episode of our podcast, Rodney Veal’s Inspired By, at Gather by Ghostlight in Dayton. Keep an eye out for our next recording events and listen to the podcast online at thinktv.org/rodney-veals-inspired-by/ or wherever you listen to podcasts.
In addition to the kits, the Ohio Learns 360 team created Family Webinars and Virtual Field Trips for YouTube as well as a website, a social media outreach campaign and more. We also attended events, visited schools and worked directly with educators throughout the state. We are proud of the educational impact we are making in Ohio through this partnership between the Ohio Department of Education and Workforce and Ohio’s PBS stations. Our regional community affairs program, Brick by Brick: Solutions for a Thriving Community, has finished the first quarter of reporting solutions to the housing crisis in Southwest Ohio.
Since launching in late March, the multi-platform project’s team has investigated responses to out-ofstate investors buying up homes, the conversion of office buildings into housing, Cincinnati’s “Connected Communities” zoning reforms and “Right to Counsel” programs for renters facing eviction.
Our team of journalists continue to dive into these challenges in our region through biweekly podcast episodes, online videos and print articles. These stories and interviews, along with the responses from community members, have been inspiring and motivating.
What do you think? We’d love to hear from you and get your thoughts about our podcast and online journalism effort! Scan the QR code to share your response:
We hosted our CET is ME event on June 13 at MadTree Brewing. Our theme was “Unleash Your Inner Artist” and we celebrated MYCincinnati as well as artists Toilynn O’Neal Turner, Victoria Morgan and Pam Kravetz with the Dr. O’dell M. Owens Community Hero Award.
Dr. O’dell Moreno Owens was a long-time volunteer at CET. He chaired the Action Auction for more than twelve years, and his unending support of the station and the benefits of our on-air educational programs made him a hero in our eyes.

His support for CET and many, many other organizations in our community was truly heroic. In that light, we are honoring other, unsung community heroes who have chosen to walk the same path as Dr. Owens. They, too, work tirelessly to improve the lives of so many in our community.
We want to thank all of our event committee members, sponsors and attendees for making this event such a success. Thank you!
