Welcome

Dear Member:
I hope this letter finds you well and that you are enjoying the beautiful fall weather. It’s a busy time at your public television stations with community events and local productions.
Last month, we teamed up with The Brightside in Dayton to host a screening of the PBS documentary We Want the Funk! Attendees enjoyed live music, food trucks, and celebrated Dayton’s role in the history of funk music. We also celebrated history last month with a screening of Ken Burns’ new documentary The American Revolution. We partnered with the Cincinnati Museum Center and held a panel discussion featuring local educators and historians.
This month, we will welcome David Schmidt, producer and co-director of The American Revolution, for another special screening event and panel discussion at the Cincinnati Museum Center. More information is available at CETconnect.org/events. The six-part documentary premieres next month on CET and ThinkTV 16, kicking off America’s 250th birthday.
On the local production side, look for new episodes of The Art Show, Brick by Brick: Solutions for a Thriving Community, SHOWCASE with Barbara Kellar, and Stephanie’s Recipe Journal as well as our Rodney Veal’s Inspired By podcast. You can find more details about upcoming episodes this month, including airdates and features, in the Station News section.

PBS national programming in October includes Great Performances’ “The Magic of Grace Bumbry,” which explores the life of the African American opera singer who became the toast of the international opera scene in the 1960s. “Cracking the Code: Phil Sharp and the Biotech Revolution” from Independent Lens examines Phil Sharp’s rise from a rural Kentucky farm boy who battled dyslexia to a Nobel Prize-winning scientist. The documentary King of Them All: The Story of King Records , from the PBS Open Call for Emerging Filmmakers initiative, explores the groundbreaking legacy of Cincinnati’s King Records –this film’s broadcast is yet to be finalized, but we look forward to seeing it.
From community events celebrating our nation’s history to local productions showcasing artists and focusing on solutions-based journalism for issues affecting Southwest Ohio – it’s all made possible because of your support. Now, more than ever, that support is essential to the work we do. Thank you for supporting CET and ThinkTV

Checkerboard Cake Coming to Stephanie’s Recipe Journal in October
Stephanie’s Recipe Journal, a new local production that takes inspiration from our previous YouTube series, The Baking Journal, premiered in September as part of our Saturday cooking block across CET, ThinkTV16 and ThinkTV14. Stephanie made her delicious Challah bread and we all wished for smell-o-vision! In the next episode, Stephanie will show us how to make her checkerboard cake, complete with an adorable fondant rose decoration. This cake isn’t hard to make, but it’s always impressive! The episode premieres Saturday, October 18, at 12:30pm on ThinkTV16 and at 1:30pm on CET. It will also air the following Tuesday, October 21, at 10:30am on ThinkTV14 and Saturday, October 25, at noon. You can stream episodes of both Stephanie’s Recipe Journal and The Baking Journal on YouTube and the PBS App.
Synchro Swim, Hand-Thrown Pottery, Lantern Festivals and More on The Art Show
Summer may have come to an end, but The Art Show is making a splash with new features in our region and beyond. This month, dive into the Rhine-Stones Synchro Swim Team based in Cincinnati’s Over-the-Rhine neighborhood and discover the art of synchronized swimming. Then, step inside Rock Riffle Run Pottery in Shade, Ohio to get to know Ohio Heritage Fellow Susan Abramovitz and her hand-thrown, ceramic creations. Tune in on Saturday, October 18, at 6pm on CET and Sunday, October 19, at 5:30pm on ThinkTV16, or stream it on the PBS App or YouTube.
For more happenings in the regional arts scene, stay tuned for new episodes of Rodney Veal’s Inspired By, our podcast that features interviews with local artists about what inspires them. New episodes premiere biweekly, each with a down-to-earth honest conversation with a real life working art maker, risk taker and world shaper. Listen on our website or wherever you get your podcasts. Brick by Brick Season 2 Underway
In the first season of Brick by Brick: Solutions for a Thriving Community , we focused on housing and community development. With season two, which kicked off in September, we’re expanding that coverage by examining areas where health and the environment interconnect with housing and neighborhood challenges. Listeners to the podcast and viewers of the TV program, both of which release twice each month, can expect stories on responses to food and healthcare deserts, mitigating toxic housing and the viability of residential solar energy.
We’re also looking at places where we find common ground amidst the concerns we face, such as with affordable housing, rising property taxes and the continued effort to reduce maternal and infant mortality rates. There is a plethora of responses occurring in our region and we believe that, by highlighting the solutions along with the context of the issues, we can all work toward a more thriving community together.

New Episodes and Encores From SHOWCASE with Barbara Kellar
This October, SHOWCASE with Barbara Kellar is introducing “Showcase Encore Presentations” — a collection of past episodes that are just as meaningful today as when they first aired. This series gives us a chance to revisit conversations that continue to inspire us and celebrate the people who have helped shape our community.
We kick off this collection with Wildlife Artist John Ruthven, originally featured in a Season 3 episode from November 2014. This episode highlights the life and work of the legendary “20th Century Audubon,” whose art and advocacy for conservation have left a lasting mark on Cincinnati and beyond. Tune in on Saturday, October 18, at 6:30pm on CET and Sunday, October 19, at 8:30pm on CET Arts.
Then, later this month, we bring you a brand new episode featuring Elizabeth Pierce, CEO of the Cincinnati Museum Center, and Jackie Congedo, CEO of the Holocaust and Humanity Center. Together, they explore the powerful “Auschwitz. Not long ago. Not far away.” exhibition at Union Terminal and discuss the partnership that brought this historic experience to our city. Tune in on Saturday, October 25, at 6:30pm on CET and Sunday, October 26, at 8:30pm on CET Arts.
If you miss the broadcast, you can watch these episodes and explore the full SHOWCASE library anytime on the PBS App or visit CETconnect.org/showcase.
Charles D. Berry Foundation Offers Major Challenge Grant
It was a rough summer for public media. Between cuts at the state level and the loss of federal funding, CET and ThinkTV started this fiscal year with a more than $3 million gap in revenue. That’s money we would have used to pay our dues to PBS, purchase rights to programming like our British mysteries, produce local programs, offer educational services and so much more. While we are working vigilantly to reduce our expenses and build efficiencies by collaborating with other public media organizations, we need your help.
To help bridge that gap, the Charles D. Berry Foundation has generously offered to match donations up to $100,000. Our campaign to reach that match goal started on September 1 and we need your help! Please consider making an additional donation at CETconnect.org/ donate or thinktv.org/donate. You can also donate through your Donor Advised Fund, direct a Qualified Charitable Distribution from your IRA or make a gift of stock. Thank you to Chuck and the Foundation team for your generosity and thank you to our viewers for your continued support.
Member Spotlight: Jae J. From Fairborn, Ohio Station News
Jae donates to ThinkTV out of a belief that our community deserves free, high-quality programming that reflects the world around us. PBS offers exceptionally valuable, firstrate content that is entertaining, enlightening, unbiased, and factually reliable.
Jae watches PBS almost daily, from news to social documentaries to science and nature programs to history and the arts. As a child, Jae was glued to Sesame Street and Mister Rogers Neighborhood, but it was programs like NOVA and Cosmos that had Jae hooked. PBS has consistently met the entertainment and informational needs far beyond anything that Jae experienced from paid programming. The science and documentary content ignited an enduring curiosity and a deep desire to keep learning.
Mister Rogers inspired Jae with lessons in kindness and empathy. These are traits Jae believes are essential for being a healthy, functioning member of society.

Carl Sagan instilled a fearless curiosity, showing that even uncomfortable truths are worth learning because verifiable facts are the most powerful tools for personal and societal progress, and Ken Burns mapped out the shoulders of the giants upon which we all stand.
Jae loves Austin City Limits for its honest, soul-stirring performances that move its viewers to tears or joyous laughter. Jae is also a devoted viewer of FRONTLINE, finding its impeccably researched and perfectly timed investigations eye-opening and essential for understanding how the world came to be the way it is.
Jae is “a joyfully-married, non-binary, dog-obsessed, science- and DIY-enthusiast, self-producing rock musician and hyphen-aficionado.” Though Jae has moved away at times, the Miami Valley’s unmatched heart and soul always draws a return.

Chuck and Betty Ann Ellman

were happily married for fortyeight years. They spent many hours watching drama and arts programming on PBS.
After Betty passed away, Chuck, a Procter & Gamble retiree, continued to dedicate his talent to many nonprofits to the day he passed away.
Chuck and Betty Ann lived humble lives. They included public television in their trust to make sure future generations of viewers would continue to enjoy educational and entertaining programming.
