Dear Member:
In the waning weeks of summer, I find myself thinking about the word “community.” Merriam-Webster’s dictionary defines community as “a unified body of individuals, often characterized by a shared location, common interests, or shared characteristics living within a larger society.”
CET and Think TV are a part of several communities: supporters of public television (members like you); teachers who use our educational materials in their classrooms; artists and creators whose work we showcase on our local arts programs; parents who trust our children’s programming to entertain and educate their kids. All of these communities recognize the value of public media and help us to work towards our vision of being a relevant, engaged regional partner that impacts lives by meeting the educational, cultural, and informational needs of the people we serve.
This summer, CET and Think TV have been active in our communities, taking part in CSO Block Parties and Pop-up Play events in Cincinnati and Hope Zone Third Thursdays in Dayton. This month, Think TV will attend the Moms2B Conference at Wright State University and CET will participate in the John P. Parker Back to School/ Partner Fair.
PBS national programming this month features Islam’s Greatest Stories of Love , which weaves together timeless tales of love, devotion, and legacy from Islamic history. Season 2 of The Marlow Murder Club follows retired archaeologist Judith Potts as she tries to solve a murder committed in her neighborhood. Professor T returns for a fourth season, with Jasper and the team tackling a serious crime wave. Great Performances: Vienna Philharmonic Summer Night Concert 2025 features opera star Piotr

On the local production side, next month we’re excited for new seasons of The Art Show and Brick by Brick , as well as new episodes of SHOWCASE with Barbara Kellar and Rodney Veal’s Inspired By podcast. The efforts of our production team were recognized earlier this summer when Think TV and CET received five regional Emmy nominations for our work in 2024. The regional Emmy awards gala was held on July 19th (after this edition of Connect went to press).

In late 2024, we premiered our locally-produced and two-time Emmy-nominated documentary, Willis “Bing” Davis: Reach High & Reach Back. We partnered with the University of Dayton to host a premiere screening at the Roger Glass Center for the Arts, where more than 240 attendees witnessed the life and work of the African American artist, educator and community activist from Dayton, Willis “Bing” Davis.
After attending the screening, Tess Mitchner Asinjo, executive director of Dayton Leadership Academy (DLA), wanted to bring this local artist’s story back to her school, located just blocks away from Davis’ studio. Art teacher Maiya Thornton-Hodge agreed and created a full teaching unit on the life and art of this talented figure.
In May of this year, DLA middle school students took a field trip to the studio to meet the iconic artist and learn more about his life journey. The students even shared their own artwork from the teaching unit with Davis, inspired by his Ancestral Dance series.
Davis founded the EbonNia Gallery in Dayton, Ohio, which showcases the work of many types of artists and serves as a community gathering place. Today, in his mid-80s, Davis continues to create art, educate others and promote social justice causes in a variety of ways.
Willis “Bing” Davis: Reach High & Reach Back is available to stream with Passport on our websites and on the PBS app. Learn more: thinktv.org/bing-davis.
August is “Make a Will Month,” a perfect time to ensure your future — and the future of what you cherish — is secure. While planning your estate might seem daunting, creating a will is a simple and powerful act of care for your loved ones. It provides peace of mind by dictating how your assets are distributed, naming guardians for minor children, choosing who should care for your pets and ensuring your final wishes are honored.
Beyond providing for family and friends, a will allows you to leave a lasting legacy, which you can do through cash, a percentage of your estate, stocks and beneficiary designations on Individual Retirement Accounts and more. You can also support the charitable causes close to your heart, such as CET or ThinkTV. A gift in your will ensures that the education programs, inspiring documentaries and local stories you value continue to enrich our community for generations to come.
If you’ve already made a will, experts recommend revisiting it every three to five years. Your life and circumstances change over time, and it’s important your estate plans reflect those changes. CET and ThinkTV recently hosted a one-hour estate planning seminar and panel discussion with regional professionals, and provided answers to many common viewer questions. You can stream the seminar at CETconnect.org/estate-planning or thinktv.org/estate-planning.
For more information on leaving a gift, contact Dan Virzi (513) 345-6582, dvirzi@cetconnect.org, or Laura Letton (937) 220-1647, lletton@thinktv.org.
Our community has been thriving with local events this summer and your station’s community engagement team loves the opportunity to connect with our members and viewers. At the beginning of the summer, our community engagement team hosted a screening of the PBS documentary series, Bugs that Rule the World, which premiered in May, at the Cincinnati Art Museum. This event was in partnership with the Queen City Pollinator Project (QCCP), a local organization which was featured in the documentary along with QCPP board member Sylvana Ross.
Our team also attended a resource fair with the Urban League and Wesley Chapel Mission Center in Cincinnati’s Over the Rhine, a pop-up play event with Seven Hills Neighborhood House at Wade Street Park
and a family event with Brothas Inc at New Prospect Baptist Church.
Hays-Porter Elementary’s summer school visited CET for a tour of the station. Students of all ages engaged in hands-on activities and crafts, and picked out a book to take home along with a goodie bag of station swag. Students in third grade and above worked together on an activity that used an engineering design process to create on an assembly line, which was from our “Engineering Your Future” program, also used as part of our statewide Ohio Learns 360 initiative.
Visit our website to find upcoming events to see us in your neighborhood at CETconnect.org/events or thinktv.org/events.

Melanie has been a proud member of the station for five years. Melanie believes that PBS offers intelligent, compelling programming that provides a true window into the world around us. PBS holds a special place in her heart and having enjoyed the programming for her entire life, she feels grateful to support the station and help make that experience available to others.
Melanie values PBS for the access to international content. She enjoys nearly any literature adaptation featured on Masterpiece, along with Great Performances and Antiques Roadshow. Melanie finds children’s
programming, in particular, to be traditionally excellent—trusted to be not only safe and ageappropriate, but also educational and inspiring.
Growing up on PBS, Melanie was deeply influenced by shows like Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood and Reading Rainbow. She truly believes these programs played a significant role in shaping the person she is today. She says that she considers Fred Rogers and LeVar Burton major heroes in her life, and she continues to carry the philosophies and values they taught her close to her heart.
Melanie and her family watch PBS programming almost every day. Her six-year-old daughter is a huge fan of PBS KIDS, and Melanie loves watching the shows alongside her. Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood was a beloved part of her daughter’s early years of watching, and these days her favorite shows include Odd Squad, Wild Kratts, Nature Cat, Lyla in the Loop, Rosie’s Rules and Arthur. She especially enjoys learning about animals and is often inspired by seeing kids her age exploring new and exciting ideas.
Other interests of Melanie’s include knitting, creating art, volunteering at her daughter’s school library and spending time with family. She worked as a bookseller for the past 25 years, and PBS was one of the things that began her love of books and reading and inspired her to share that with others. PBS continues to be a meaningful part of her family’s everyday life.
