August 2025 Public Media CONNECT Member Program Guide
Dear Member:
As our August edition of Connect went to press, Congress had not yet voted on the Rescissions Package requested by the Trump administration, which, among other things, sought to rescind allocated funding for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB). As we now know, on July 18, Congress approved the Rescissions Package and eliminated $1.1 billion in funding for CPB over the next two years. Locally, CET and ThinkTV will lose $2.6 million in federal funding. This news came on top of losing $541,000 in state funding for educational technology training for teachers’ use in the classroom.
While this is not the outcome we had hoped for, we have been working on a contingency plan which includes prioritizing our local content and educational services; concentrating on new revenue opportunities to help bridge the loss of federal funding; evaluating our national program service if necessary; and building collaborations to share operational expenses much like we did when we merged CET and ThinkTV 15 years ago. While we work to determine what’s next for our organization and public media in our community, I would like to say thank you. Thank you for your calls to our legislators to voice your support. Thank you for participating in our Day of Giving. And thank you for your ongoing membership support and additional gifts. You are making a difference.
CET and ThinkTV are your local public television stations, and we promise to continue to provide the services and programming that are important to you, your families, and your children. PBS tells us that they will continue to invest in quality programming like the dramas we love and the children’s programming our families rely on. We are all working together to support this vital institution and continue to serve our founding mission.
The efforts of our production team were rewarded earlier this summer when the podcast portion of our community affairs series, Brick by Brick, won the Ohio Society of Professional Journalists’ award for Best Podcast. You can find podcast episodes on our websites or wherever you get your podcasts.
CET and ThinkTV have been busy creating new local content, including new episodes of Brick by Brick, The Art Show, SHOWCASE with Barbara Kellar, and our arts podcast, Rodney Veal’s Inspired By. We’re also moving our popular YouTube series, The Baking Journal, to our broadcast channels, where it will become Stephanie’s Recipe Journal; we’re excited about this change and hope viewers will enjoy getting to know Stephanie better and discovering new recipes. PBS national programming this month features “Human” from NOVA, the series premiere of Sacred Planet with Gulnaz Kahn, the second season of Big Cats 24/7, Becoming Thurgood: America’s Social Architect and the 37th season of American Experience Rest assured, we are not slowing down, but navigating this new public media world with determination and pride, all with less federal and state funding. This would not be possible without your vote of confidence and continued support. Thank you.

The Baking Journal Becomes Stephanie’s Recipe Journal
After five years of producing The Baking Journal for YouTube, we are excited to announce that we’re revamping the show! The newly updated show, Stephanie’s Recipe Journal, will include recipes of all kinds - not just baked goods - and will be formatted for broadcast and streaming. Rather than specifically highlighting the steps to make each recipe like we did for The Baking Journal, this new format will allow us to spend time with Stephanie, listen to her stories, learn the science behind her ingredients, enjoy her meditative process and so much more. The first episode of Stephanie’s Recipe Journal features one of Stephanie’s personal favorite recipesChallah Bread.
Stephanie’s Recipe Journal will be a 30-minute program and is set to premiere on Saturday, September 20, at 12:30pm on ThinkTV16 and the station livestream and 1:30pm on CET and the station livestream. New episodes of the series will premiere each month from September through November, and beginning in January, episodes will air on a weekly basis.
Episodes will be available to stream On Demand on YouTube and the PBS App. We will continue to post recipe cards and additional information about the recipes on our website at CETconnect.org/recipejournal and thinktv.org/recipejournal.

Member Spotlight: Darrell C. From Oakwood, Ohio
Darrell has been a proud member of ThinkTV for eight years. He believes public television is one of the most vital institutions in our country, providing free access to educational, enlightening and culturally rich content as well as independent journalism. To Darrell, these resources are essential to our democracy and the American way of life. He donates so that everyone can share in the enrichment public television offers.
Some of Darrell’s earliest memories of PBS go back to visits with his grandparents. His grandfather was a WWII tank driver and an oilfield mechanic in South Texas, but one thing was certain when he was in his house – everyone was watching Nature at 7pm on PBS. Darrell did not reconnect with PBS until after college, when he was introduced to a travel show with a guy named Rick Steves. From that moment on, he was hooked.
Rick Steves is one of Darrell’s favorite PBS programs because of the informative content combined with charmingly hokey antics. Rick Steves inspired him to become a more thoughtful traveler and to explore and appreciate cultures from around the world, even if only through the screen. Darrell also enjoys the Walter Presents collection and PBS British dramas for their diverse stories in various languages and cultural settings on Passport.
While serving overseas in the Air Force, Darrell once made a donation to a PBS pledge drive around Christmas. He had his thank-you gift, a Rick Steves DVD set, shipped to his base. The series became a much-needed mental escape for him after long, demanding days. Darrell is retiring from the Air Force this month and plans to remain in Dayton. He’s looking forward to supporting CET and ThinkTV for many more years to come.
