Welcome
Dear Member,
Welcome to March and the arrival of spring! A time of growth and new activity – it’s also a busy time for your public television stations.
First, I want to thank everyone who attended “An Afternoon of Bourbon & Baking” last month at the Dayton Beer Company; it was a wonderful way to spend a wintery afternoon and a fun time was had by all. This month, we will host a Kids Club event at CET and collaborate with the Cincinnati Museum Center on a special event celebrating their Julia Child exhibit. Looking ahead to April, we will bring CET is ME back to Longworth Hall and honor local educators.
March also marks our most important membership drive of the year. We’ll ask our valued members to renew their generous support, and we hope new members will join you in supporting the most widely used non-profit organization in our region. We’re thankful for the 44th annual Kaplan Challenge Grant, which will allows us to match new donations during this drive. This is also the time of year we begin to make commitments to PBS and others to invest in the programming you enjoy each week and it’s your membership support that makes those commitments possible.
Our production team will premiere our newest documentary this month, Jeffrey’s Journey. This inspiring film highlights the story of a man living with a chronic and progressive physical disability who discovers physical freedom through long-distance cycling. We’re also excited to debut Rick Steves’ Europe: A Symphonic Journey, our collaborative project with Rick Steves and the Cincinnati Pops, in April.

National PBS programming in March features Wolf Hall: The Mirror and the Light on Masterpiece, which traces the final four years of Cromwell’s life, completing his journey from a self-made man to the most-feared influential figure of his time. Season 2 of Marie Antoinette continues the extraordinary story of the incredibly modern and avant-garde young queen.

Call the Midwife returns for Season 14, which begins in 1970 and finds the folks of Nonnatus House continuing to tackle social challenges like poor housing, poverty, and various health issues, including a puzzling case of apparent immaculate conception.
From events to local productions to PBS national programming – we hope you agree that our true value lies in our steadfast pillar of public service. All of this is possible and available to your communities because of your support. Thank you.

Local Documentary, Jeffrey’s Journey, Premieres March 27

When you’re faced with an incurable, debilitating and progressive disease, you have a choice to make. How do you live your life? When Jeffrey McElfresh was a child, that wasn’t a consideration. He was in perpetual motion, a bundle of energy. Then something changed. It began in small, almost imperceptible ways. But it just kept coming. His feet and hands were gradually losing function. At age 41 he finally learned the name of his malady: Charcot –Marie-Tooth disease. This peripheral neuropathy is extraordinarily rare. It disrupts signals from the brain, causing muscles in the feet and hands to atrophy.
Today Jeffrey’s disability is apparent. But he’s adapted. He’s built a life rich with meaning. And he’s found that, when he’s on a bicycle, he’s in his element. He’ll tell you he rides better than he walks. And he rides a lot. He has become an adventure cyclist.
In our locally-produced documentary, Jeffrey’s Journey, we follow Jeffrey over the course of 10 days as he cycles along the Ohio River, from Pittsburgh to Cincinnati. Consider that question: “How do you live your life when faced with a devastating disability?” This documentary reveals one man’s answer. As he follows the river through old steel towns, beautiful valleys and forgotten burgs, Jeffrey discovers a lot about the land he’s riding through and even more about himself. Tune in on Thursday, March 27, at 8pm on CET and ThinkTV16 or wherever you stream our stations, including the PBS App.
Learn and Discover the Wonder of Flight with the Education Team
Our education team is proud to create and lead handson activities at the National Aviation Hall of Fame in Dayton, Ohio in their new Joe Clark Innovation Lab. Imagine exploring aerodynamics and the engineering design process while creating a fun craft. For example, our penguin kite activity exposes kids to basic physics concepts — in a fun and playful environment!
Kids and their guardians work together to craft a parachute to give their penguin a chance to experience the gift of flight. Once built, they can test their creations in a wind tunnel, exploring how air resistance affects the penguin’s descent.

Ready To Learn Project: Empowering Early Childhood Educators
Ready To Learn, an initiative by CET and ThinkTV, continues to make a significant impact in the field of early childhood education. Generously funded by The Daniel and Susan Pfau Foundation, the Rockwern Charitable Foundation, Mathile Foundation and CenterPoint Energy Foundation, this project provides free professional development opportunities for early childhood educators in the community. Through a blend of virtual and in-person sessions, educators gain valuable insights and skills on a variety of early childhood topics, all at no cost. A highlight of the program is the annual Super Saturday event, a day-long gathering packed with dynamic workshops designed to equip and empower educators.

This year’s Super Saturday was a resounding success, bringing together more than 50 educators from the Dayton and Cincinnati areas. Each participant engaged in three two-hour workshops focusing on the topics “Preparing for Kindergarten,” “Creating Effective Schedules & Transitions” and “Raising Resilient Children.” It was a great learning and networking opportunity for the educators and they received free classroom resources, books and exciting giveaways to enhance their teaching environments. A huge thanks goes to our staff who played a role, volunteer Barbara Sloan and our funders. Ready To Learn exemplifies how community partnerships and dedicated funding can create lasting positive change in early education, fostering growth and connection among those shaping the minds of tomorrow.

At CET and ThinkTV, we are deeply committed to ensuring that professional development remains a top priority within our teams. Employee growth, job satisfaction and productivity flourish when we invest in building the skills, knowledge and competencies essential for success.

By embracing diverse perspectives and strengthening our ability to communicate and collaborate effectively, we are fostering the creation of truly unstoppable teams.
What makes CET and ThinkTV extraordinary is the collective dedication, talent and creativity of our employees.
