Mike et J.R. ne se voient jamais, ne se touchent jamais, ne se goûtent jamais. Pourtant, ils parviennent à se ressentir. Leurs téléphones à corde deviennent des cordes de rescousse. Cette corde téléphonique nous transporte nous aussi; en 1985, au cœur de la montée de la crise du SIDA, dans une période d’extermination quotidienne, de gens qui ont tant voyagé et risqué pour vivre d’amour. En décrochant l’appel du dramaturge Robert Chesley, nous donnons voix à une génération qui s’est fait écartée des annales historiques. Ce qui est monté sur scène est honnête, sans gêne, et donc transcende l’acte sexuel pour dévêtir notre humanité, et peutêtre même notre manque d’humanité. Jerker: A Pornographic Elegy with Redeeming Social Value and a Hymn to the Queer Men of San Francisco in Twenty Telephone Calls Mike and J.R. have never met and never touched. But together, they can feel each other through their conversations. Their telephone cords become a lifeline. We’re transported to 1985 and the rise of the AIDS crisis in a period where death is an everyday matter, where people have risked so much just to love. By picking up the call from playwright Robert Chesley, we give voice to a generation marginalized by history. What we see on stage is honest, without shame and therefore transcends the sexual act to lay bare our humanity or lack thereof. It’s a moment in theatre that is gay and American, and at the same time, for everyone and Manitoban.
