CITY UPDATES
DOWNTOWN CENTER + PARKING GARAGE
Construction continues to move forward on the Downtown Parking Garage as Swinerton has completed the Level 2 decks and is making steady progress toward Level 3, with the next deck pour scheduled for Tuesday.
UPCOMING EVENT CHANGES AND RESCHEDULING ANNOUNCEMENTS
Due to inclement weather and out of an abundance of caution for the safety of our residents, vendors, and attendees, the City has made the difficult decision to cancel tonight’s Friday Night Market. In addition to the weather-related concerns, several vendors also chose to withdraw from the event earlier today, further contributing to the decision. While we recognize that this cancellation may be disappointing, the safety and well-being of our community remains our highest priority.
Furthermore, the Life Connected. Service Day, originally scheduled for Saturday, April 5, will be rescheduled to a future date. The Clean Sweep event will also be rescheduled. These community-focused events are important to our mission and will take place at a later time when conditions are more favorable. Once new dates for these events have been determined, they will be shared through the City’s official communication channels.

HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE
Constructed in 1912, the Yates-Strickland House stands as a testament to Celina’s early growth and the families who shaped its history.
In 1902, Carl (1879-1959) and Claudine (Lipscomb) Yates (1882-1958) were drawn to Celina’s growing economy. Carl, the owner of Yates Dry Goods Company, relocated his family from Grapevine to Celina, where they established a successful dry goods store. A decade later, they built this elegant Prairie-style home at the corner of West Main and South Arizona. Along with their three children - James Swayne (1905-1971), Marie Estill (19091990), and Ann Jo (1912-1989) - the Yates family moved into their new residence in late 1912.
By 1916, Carl Yates’ business acumen led him to accept a position with Ely and Walker Dry Goods Company in Fort Worth. The following year, the house was sold to Joseph Milton Strickland (1852-1927). For the next 65 years, the Strickland family maintained ownership, with Julia Strickland (1874-1969) remaining in the home after her husband’s passing. Their son, Roy Strickland (1903-1981), and his wife, Dorothy (1904-1986), also lived in the residence, operating a tailor shop and dry-cleaning business on the property. After decades of private ownership, the home underwent a meticulous three-year restoration to preserve its original architectural integrity.
ARCHITECTURAL FEATURES
• The West Main-facing facade boasts a distinctive wraparound porch, supported by five square columns in the front and two on the side.
• A hipped roof with an extended dormer allows natural light into the attic.
• The home retains its original window frames and double-hung windows.
• While the property originally included servants’ quarters, they have since been removed.
The Yates-Strickland House remains one of Celina’s most prominent historic residences, reflecting both the city’s past and its commitment to historic preservation. We look forward to celebrating this important moment in Celina’s history with you.
