THREE WISE MECHANICS: CHESHIRE COLLEGE STUDENT HELPS

STRANDED MOTORIST

In a remarkable display of community spirit, a student from Cheshire College – South & West recently went above and beyond to help a local resident in need, demonstrating his kindness, technical skills, and strong character.

On the evening of December 18th, Sue Molesworth, a local resident, found herself stranded in a car park after driving through a flooded stretch of the A500. While navigating flood, Sue’s car’s mudguard became detached and lodged around the tire, leaving her unable to drive. After spending over an hour trying to secure a call out from various breakdown services, Sue was unable to get the help she desperately needed.

In a fortunate turn of events, three young people, including Cheshire College student Milosz, were passing by the car park and noticed Sue's predicament.

17-year-old Vehicle Maintenance and Repair Student, Milosz Buczynski, quickly identified the issue with the mudguard. His friends joined in to assist, using their tools to jack up the car and free the mudguard. Upon further inspection, Milosz pointed out a bulge in the tire and advised Sue to drive home cautiously.

Sue was moved by their selflessness, noting that the three refused any monetary reward and instead provided their assistance out of sheer kindness. The incident, occurring just a week before Christmas, was humorously dubbed by her friends as the intervention of the “Three Wise Mechanics.”

Sue was deeply impressed by Milosz's respectful approach throughout the whole ordeal. She shared, “ Milosz was not only kind but incredibly polite. He approached the situation with caution and respect, even asking for permission before opening the boot of my car. His thoughtfulness truly stood out.”

After hearing from Sue and in recognition of Milosz's actions, Cheshire College invited her to the Academy Restaurant for lunch, where she had the chance to personally express her gratitude to Milosz. Although he almost arrived late due to helping another

motorist, the two eventually reunited. Milosz, reflecting on the experience, shared, “ I saw a woman struggling in the rain with the wheel arch hanging off, and I just felt I had to help. It’s something that’s happened before, so I didn’t think much of it. I was happy to assist.” Milosz also expressed his gratitude to Sue for taking the time to personally thank him at the College.”

Sue, in turn, praised Milosz for his selflessness, saying, “ He is a credit to his family and to Cheshire College. His parents should be extremely proud of him.”

CHESHIRE COLLEGE COMMEMORATES HOLOCAUST MEMORIAL DAY WITH POWERFUL STUDENT-LED CEREMONIES

Cheshire College – South & West marked Holocaust Memorial Day on January 27th with powerful student-led ceremonies across the whole college, bringing together students and staff to remember the victims of the Holocaust and reflect on the importance of standing against prejudice and discrimination.

This year’s event was centred around the theme ‘For a better future’, aligning with the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau. In a display of remembrance, 80 tealights were distributed to students at each campus, symbolising the anniversary and honouring the millions of lives lost.

Tyler Birch, Student Senate President for Crewe commented, “ The light represents the hope for the future, showing there is no place for prejudice and discrimination amongst the Cheshire College community.”

Ellis Hindley, Student Senate President for Ellesmere Port, added, “ Today we remember those who were silenced simply for being who they were. Holocaust Memorial Day stands as a reminder to honour their lives, challenge hatred, and defend the dignity of all communities.”

Students from diverse courses across the college played key roles in

the event. At Chester, students gathered for a moment of reflection, receiving candles and presenting holocaustthemed displays. Ellesmere Port saw Uniformed Protective Services lead a ceremonial march, where they were joined by other students, followed by a minute's silence. At Crewe, Performing Arts students Callum Faddes and Luca Pearson contributed with a poem and song.

The event provided an opportunity for students to engage with important global issues and demonstrate their own commitment to positive change.

Jim Chaplin, Student Senate President for the Chester campus, emphasised the importance of remembrance, adding, “ It is important to remember history so that it is not repeated. The Student Senate stands with all of the communities affected.”

Joanne Stewart, Participation and Learning Resource Manager stated, “ Our students’ participation in events like this highlights the importance of learning beyond the classroom. It helps shape a more inclusive and compassionate future, while reflecting the values of respect and empathy that define our college community.”

AT COLLEGE MARKETING NETWORK AWARDS

Cheshire College is pleased to announce that its 2023-2024 prospectus has received a prestigious ‘Highly Commended’ accolade in the Best Prospectus category at the College Marketing Network FE First Marketing Awards.

The event, held on Monday, January 27th 2025 at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, in Birmingham, brought together marketing professionals from colleges and sixth forms across the UK to celebrate excellence in further education marketing.

The prospectus was praised for effectively capturing the essence of student life, academic excellence, and career opportunities available at the College, resonating deeply with prospective students and families.

Marketing and Recruitment Manager, Lynsey Shearsmith shared her pride in the achievement:

“ We are absolutely thrilled to receive this recognition. The prospectus was a labour of love for our team, and we are incredibly proud of the final result. The award is a testament to the hard work and creativity of everyone involved.”

The College’s marketing team worked closely with both students and staff to ensure the prospectus accurately represented the wide range of courses, student experiences, and opportunities available at Cheshire College. Combining impactful imagery, student testimonials, and clear information, the prospectus became an invaluable tool in the college's recruitment strategy for the year.

Designed entirely in-house with a focus on sustainability and engagement, the slim, interactive guide reduces waste and invites students to document their journey with write-on sections.

The prospectus played a significant role in boosting recruitment efforts for the 2023-2024 academic year, contributing to a 4% increase in school liaison activities and an 8% rise in enrolments. Its interactive, hands-on approach has strengthened engagement with prospective students, helping

Cheshire College maintain its position as a leader in school leaver recruitment.

The success of the 2023-2024 prospectus is just one example of how the College is enhancing its offerings and ensuring it remains a top choice for students across the region.

Looking ahead, the marketing team is already planning new strategies to build on this success, aiming to further elevate the College’s presence and appeal to a diverse range of prospective students.

CHESHIRE COLLEGE STUDENTS PLAY KEY ROLE IN SHAPING THE REGION’S SAFEGUARDING PRIORITIES

Travel and Tourism students at Cheshire College – South & West, Joshua Anderson and Francesca Meichsner had the unique opportunity to present their insights on safeguarding priorities to some of the region's most influential decisionmakers.

The event, held on 28th January at the Ellesmere Port Portal, was organised by the Youth Federation and brought together representatives from across local safeguarding and public services, including Cheshire Police, The Countess of Chester Hospital, and Children's Services.

As part of the event, Joshua focused on the issue of safeguarding young people's mental health while Francesca highlighted the importance of making young people feel safe and supported in the workplace.

Their presentations were part of an ongoing initiative to ensure young people’s voices are directly integrated into safeguarding policy and decisions in Cheshire West and Cheshire.

Chris Baggs, Safeguarding, Behaviour, and Welfare Manager at Cheshire College expressed his pride in the students commenting, “ It is vitally important that the voice of young people is heard when making decisions on policy that will directly impact them in their daily lives, and Joshua and Francesca highlighted two key issues for young people.”

The event was attended by senior leaders in the field, including, the Executive Director of Children and

Families at Cheshire West and Chester; Detective Chief Superintendent of Cheshire Police; Associate Director of Quality and Safeguarding at NHS Cheshire & Merseyside and many more. Their involvement underscored the importance of collaboration between young people and professionals in tackling safeguarding challenges.

Kerry Joinson, Travel and Tourism Lecturer at Cheshire College and a member of the board of trustees for the Youth Federation praised the students' professionalism, saying: “ The students excelled beyond expectations. Their level of preparation and commitment was second to none. I am incredibly proud of them – they truly represented the college with pride and professionalism,

making a real impact on an issue that matters to our community.”

Kevin, Director of Operations at the Youth Federation commented, “ The feedback from the Safeguarding Children’s Partnership has been incredible. Josh and Fran were outstanding, and their contributions around safeguarding really stood out. Huge credit to Kerry and the team for the amazing work they’ve done in supporting them. Their achievements are something to be proud of.”

The Youth Federation continues to collaborate with Cheshire College, providing students with valuable opportunities to engage in important community issues and influence policies that directly impact their lives.

NEW CABIN CREW COURSE FOR ADULTS

LAUNCHED BY CHESHIRE

COLLEGE TO MEET AVIATION

INDUSTRY DEMAND

Cheshire College – South & West has launched a new Cabin Crew course, designed specifically for adults 19 and over who are eager to enter the aviation industry. The course comes in response to the rising demand from airlines for skilled, customer-focused professionals with life experience.

Targeted at career changers, individuals returning to the workforce, and those looking to “unretire,” the program offers an exciting opportunity to start a rewarding new career path.

The course is perfect for those with previous customer-facing experience and equips students with the essential skills needed to succeed as cabin crew members.

Key areas of training include emergency procedures, cabin safety, passenger service, onboard sales, and first aid. Students will also participate in practical, hands-on assessments, including simulated aircraft cabin exercises on campus and pool-based lifesaving drills.

The initiative comes at a crucial time when airlines are making a concerted effort to attract older workers into the industry. EasyJet’s successful recruitment campaign has led to a significant rise in cabin crew hires aged 50 and over, challenging the traditional notion that cabin crew roles are best suited to younger candidates.

Sarah Broady lecturer in Travel and Tourism at Cheshire College commented;

“ As a Lecturer with first hand Cabin Crew experience, I’m excited to see this course offer adults a fresh opportunity to join the aviation industry.

With the growing demand for experienced, customer-focused professionals, this program is designed to equip students with the skills needed to thrive as cabin crew. It’s a fantastic opportunity for individuals to start a rewarding new chapter in their careers, and we’re here to guide them towards success.”

There are a number of funding options available to make returning to study affordable, with eligible adults able to study for free. Graduates of the course will be prepared to take on roles in cabin crew, opening the door to a fulfilling career in aviation.
