FRESHERS’ FAIRS WELCOME NEW STUDENTS ACROSS CHESHIRE COLLEGE CAMPUSES

Cheshire College – South & West kicked off the academic year with a series of Freshers’ Fairs across its Crewe, Chester, and Ellesmere Port campuses, welcoming hundreds of new and returning students to explore opportunities, meet new people, and settle into college life.

From wellbeing services and volunteering groups to career advice and student-led initiatives, the fairs were designed to help learners settle in and feel part of the College community.

A wide range of organisations took part, including Nestlé, Donutology, Samaritans, Her Place, and other local businesses and charities, offering interactive activities, guidance, and products for sale.

The College’s Student Senate also played an active role, engaging with new students as well as promoting student voice and involvement across campus life.

Kai Greaves, Student Governor, said:

“ The Freshers’ Fair was such a great way to kick off the year — there were lots of stalls, freebies, and opportunities to sign up for enrichment activities. The Senate was really pleased with the numbers attending and worked hard to make sure everyone had a great time.”

Helen Nellist, Deputy Principal and Deputy CEO of Cheshire College, added: “ Freshers’ Fairs are an important part of the student experience. They give students the chance to connect with others, discover what’s available to them, and begin building relationships that will support them throughout their time at college.”

“It was fantastic to see so many organisations and students engaging with one another across all three campuses. ”

RECORD BREAKING TURNOUT AT CHESHIRE COLLEGE’S FIRST OPEN EVENING OF THE YEAR

Cheshire College – South & West has celebrated a hugely successful start to the academic year, welcoming a record-breaking number of attendees to its first Open Evening on Tuesday 7th October 2025.

The event took place

simultaneously across the College’s Crewe, Ellesmere Port, and Chester campuses, marking the highest ever number of visitors.

With over a 30% increase in attendance compared to last year’s first Open Evening, thousands of prospective

students, parents, and members of the local community experienced what makes Cheshire College one of the region's leading further education providers.

“ We were absolutely thrilled to see such a strong turnout across all

three campuses,” said Principal and CEO, Jasbir Dhesi OBE.

“It was fantastic to see so many young people and their families exploring what their future could look like with us.”

From interactive workshops to live demonstrations and tours of cutting-edge facilities, guests got an exclusive look at over 300 course options — including A Levels, T Levels, apprenticeships, higher education, adult learning, and vocational programmes — all designed to equip students with the skills and confidence for a successful future.

Visitors at the Crewe campus were also among the first to step inside the College’s brand-new Institute of Technology (IoT) building, a landmark investment in advanced technical education across Cheshire and Warrington.

CHESHIRE COLLEGE AND THE PLEDGE HOST MAJOR CAREERS FAIRS ACROSS ALL CAMPUSES

Cheshire College – South & West, in partnership with The Pledge, hosted a series of Careers and Education Fairs across its Crewe, Ellesmere Port, and Chester campuses, welcoming over 5,000 students and 160 exhibitors.

The events brought together students from over 21 local secondary schools, as well as Cheshire College students, and members of the public, all eager to explore future career and education opportunities.

Attendees had the opportunity to engage with a wide range of employers and education providers, including major organisations such as Bentley Motors, British Army, NHS, Puregym, Stellantis, and Chester Zoo,

In addition to employers, the events featured multiple higher education institutions, further education providers, and independent training organisations, offering guidance on the many pathways available after school or college.

Jasbir Dhesi OBE, Principal and CEO of Cheshire College, commented: “ Our partnership with The Pledge is a powerful example of how education and industry can work together to support young people.”

“Whether it’s students in Year 11 thinking about their next step, or our own students preparing for life after college, it’s vital they have the chance to speak directly with employers. These conversations help them understand the skills needed, the opportunities available, and give them the confidence to make informed decisions about their future.”

CHESHIRE COLLEGE COMPLETES MULTI-CAMPUS DECARBONISATION SCHEME

Cheshire College – South & West has completed a £6.2 million decarbonisation project that will reduce carbon emissions by 562 tonnes per year and save 3.08 million kWh of fossil fuel energy annually.

The final phase of the scheme has now been delivered at the Ellesmere Port Campus, marking the successful completion of a multi-year sustainability initiative across Crewe, Chester, and Ellesmere Port.

Helen Nellist, Deputy Principal and Deputy CEO of Cheshire College, said, “ This project represents our continued commitment to sustainability, not only supporting the UK’s climate targets but also helping us manage long-term energy costs, ensuring a sustainable future for the College and community.”

The final stage at Ellesmere Port received £1.11 million in funding through the Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme, contributing to a total investment of £1.76 million. The completed scheme is expected to reduce carbon emissions by 175 tonnes annually — a 39% reduction — and cut fossil fuel consumption by over 975,000 kWh at the Campus.

Key upgrades at Ellesmere Port included the replacement of two gas boilers with six air-source heat pumps, which provide heating and hot water by efficiently extracting heat from the outside air. Powered by electricity, these systems offer a cleaner, more sustainable alternative to traditional

fossil fuel-based heating.

The project also involved replacing outdated fluorescent lighting with energy-efficient LED fixtures, further reducing energy consumption and improving the learning environment.

Kyle Brick, Estates and Facilities Manager added, “ Replacing fossil fuelbased heating with air-source heat pumps marks a major step towards eco-friendly, efficient campuses. The benefits of this project will be felt for

years to come, both environmentally and economically.”

The decarbonisation scheme supports the UK’s goal to achieve 95% clean electricity by 2030, replacing fossil fuels like gas and oil with cleaner energy solutions.

With the final phase now complete, the College continues to lead by example in the education sector, demonstrating how institutions can take meaningful action toward a more sustainable future.

Cheshire College is proud to provide impressive facilities at all three of our Campuses.

CHESHIRE COLLEGE AND STORYHOUSE PARTNER TO SHAPE REGIONAL CREATIVE FUTURES

Cheshire College – South & West and Storyhouse, Chester’s independent and award-winning cultural hub and arts centre, have announced an exciting new partnership set to create opportunities for students and strengthen creative and cultural connections across the region.

Building on their existing collaboration, Cheshire College and Storyhouse have formally signed a Memorandum of Understanding, marking a shared commitment to expanding educational, creative, and professional development opportunities for students, staff, and the wider community.

The agreement provides a clear framework for strategic collaboration, underpinned by a mutual ambition to nurture talent and elevate cultural activity across Cheshire.

Helen Nellist, Deputy Principal and Deputy CEO of Cheshire College highlighted the significance of the partnership:

“ Storyhouse plays a vital role in the cultural life of our community, and partnerships like this are key to creating new opportunities for young people.”

“By embedding cultural activity into our study programmes, we’re not only raising aspirations but also helping students discover the

diverse and exciting career pathways within the UK’s fast growing creative industries.”

Annabel Turpin, Chief Executive of Storyhouse, also welcomed the collaboration:

“ This agreement formalises what has already been a really productive relationship between Storyhouse and Cheshire College. By working together, we can connect students directly with artists, productions and projects, creating meaningful pathways into the creative industries while enriching the cultural life of our region.”

Through this partnership, students will gain direct access to Storyhouse’s award-winning theatre, cinema, and arts venue, alongside the College’s own cutting-edge technical facilities. This unique blend of resources will enable hands-on learning and meaningful engagement with the creative industries.

At the heart of the collaboration is a shared vision for long-term regional impact. By connecting education, employers, and the arts, the partnership aims to cultivate a strong pipeline of creative talent and unlock opportunities for students and the wider community through joint events, shared resources, and innovative cultural projects.

The ceremony brought together graduates of university-level courses

from the College’s Crewe, Ellesmere Port, and Chester campuses, alongside peers and college staff for a memorable day of celebration.

Graduates were awarded qualifications across a diverse range of disciplines, including Engineering, Computing, Performing Arts, Business, and Education.

Jasbir Dhesi OBE, Principal and Ceo of Cheshire College, said:

“ Graduation day is always one of the highlights of the year. It’s a moment to celebrate the incredible achievements of our students, many of whom have balanced work, family, and study to reach this point. Congratulations and the very best of luck to all graduates as they take their

next steps.”

Hannah Crockett (pictured left), HND Engineering graduate, said:

“ I’m currently in full-time employment and wanted to do Higher Education part time. I really liked the flexibility and the fact that everyone is so friendly — there are so many opportunities here. I’m going to continue my education and go to university to do the top-up year so I can gain a full degree.”

Jo Francis, Lecturer in Education and Training, commented:

“ It’s been an absolute

pleasure teaching some of the students in this cohort — they’ve engaged in everything they’ve done. Graduation isn’t just a celebration of the certificate; it’s a celebration of everything else also conquered along the way.”

“It’s a really important time for reflection and for thinking about how graduates want to take their career forward and keep developing.”

Guest speaker Kamal Ellis-Hyman delivered an inspiring address, encouraging graduates to embrace the next stage of their personal and

professional journeys.

The College’s Higher Education provision is closely aligned to local and regional skills priorities, ensuring students graduates with the knowledge, technical expertise, and professional networks sought by sought by employers across Cheshire and beyond.

Through strong partnerships with leading organisations, including Bentley, NHS, and Unipart, students benefit from invaluable real-world experience, with many completing higher-level apprenticeships alongside their studies.

“ We have invested heavily in resources and facilities for Higher Education students because we are passionate about ensuring they have access to quality education, first-class facilities, and personalised teaching. That commitment continues to underpin our role as a leading provider of skills across the region.” Dhesi added.

Cheshire College offers a wide range of Higher Education qualifications, including Higher National Certificates (HNCs), Higher National Diplomas (HNDs), and professional qualifications, designed to provide flexible pathways for all.

Returning to the College’s Performing Arts department, Macaulay spoke with current students about his journey — from completing his Level 3 qualification in Performing Arts, progressing onto a Higher National

Certificate and Higher National Diploma, to building a thriving career in theatre, television, and film.

Reflecting on his time at Cheshire College, Macaulay said: “ I didn’t realise at the time just how impactful the things I was learning would be.”

“Now, after a 15-year career, I can see that everything I learnt in college is just the norm in the industry. It’s been a great experience coming here when I was younger – and coming back now, being able to meet the students and talk about my career. I wish them all

the best in the future.”

The College’s university-level qualifications offer a flexible and affordable alternative to traditional higher education, allowing students to learn in smaller class sizes, benefit from personalised support, and develop industry-focused skills that prepare them for both work and further study.

The visit is part of the College’s ongoing commitment to celebrating alumni success and connecting current students with professionals who once stood where they are now.
