CHESHIRE COLLEGE STUDENTS PARTNER WITH BENTLEY MOTORS FOR SUSTAINABILITY-FOCUSED ART INSTALLATION
Cheshire College is proud to announce a successful collaboration between its Visual Art students and Bentley Motors, following a creative commission at Bentley’s Logistics Green Day.
As part of the event, students were invited to repurpose a scrap car body into a live art installation that reflected the event’s core themes of sustainability, innovation, and social responsibility. The brief challenged students to respond creatively to keynote talks delivered by industry leaders, transforming their insights into a powerful visual statement.
The resulting artwork was
praised by Bentley representatives, including Tom Hutchinson, Functional Manager – Logistics Technical Projects, who commended the students’ professionalism and the impact of their design:
“ We were blown away with the quality and detail in the pieces and it is a testament to the skills and hard work behind the scenes to make it happen.”
Ruth Szolkowska, Vice Principal Innovation, Curriculum and Quality added:
“ This collaboration not only showcased the creative talent of our
students but also highlighted the value of industry partnerships in providing meaningful, real-world experiences.”
“We are proud to continue developing strong links with Bentley and other employers who share our commitment to innovation and community engagement.”
The project forms part of the College’s wider strategy to embed employer engagement into the curriculum, offering learners opportunities to apply their skills in professional contexts.

NEW HORIZONS: ADULTS CHANGE CAREERS AND LAND JOBS WITH MAJOR AIRLINES FOLLOWING CABIN CREW COURSE AT CHESHIRE COLLEGE
Three adult students from Cheshire College – South & West have already secured jobs with leading airlines after completing the Cabin Crew training course at the College’s Ellesmere Port Campus.
The course, designed for adults
looking to change careers or re-enter the workforce, has seen quick success — with students now preparing to start new roles at Ryanair, EasyJet, and Virgin Atlantic. Out of eight adults enrolled in the programme, nearly half have already received job offers just
weeks after completing their training. Ruth Szolkowska, Vice Principal – Innovation, Curriculum and Quality, praised the course’s impact: “ We’re proud to offer training that opens real doors for adults looking for a fresh start or a new challenge.
These students are proof that with ambition and the right support, you can transform your career and your future. The success of this group speaks volumes about the quality of our teaching and the demand for skilled, job-ready candidates in the travel industry.”
The Cabin Crew course includes hands-on experience and practical assessments, tailored to airline requirements.
Sarah Broady, Course Lecturer and experienced industry professional, added:
“ From day one, our students showed real enthusiasm for joining the aviation industry — many coming from completely different career backgrounds. Throughout the course, I’ve watched their confidence,
professionalism and skills grow week by week.”
“It’s incredible to see them now stepping into their dream roles.”
Successful student, Nicky Taylor, who will be joining Virgin Atlantic, shared:
“ Becoming cabin crew was a childhood dream I never thought I’d achieve. I started out in the beauty industry and later became a nurse, so my background is really varied — but I wanted to do something completely different.”
“The facilities at the College are fantastic, and it’s been such a great course. Life is far too short, and you’re never too old to start again. I’ve now secured a job with Virgin Atlantic and I’m just waiting for my training date — then I’ll be up in the skies!”
Choosing Higher Education at Cheshire College – South & West will provide you with the opportunity to study locally at one of our three cutting-edge Campuses based in Cheshire.

CHESHIRE COLLEGE APPLAUDS STAFF AT BIGGEST AWARDS CELEBRATION YET
Cheshire College South & West has raised the bar for staff recognition and celebration with its most prestigious Staff Awards to date, honouring the exceptional contributions of colleagues across all its Ellesmere Port, Chester and Crewe Campuses.
Held over two days, the Staff Awards brought together teams from across teaching, support and operations to celebrate people who make the College an outstanding place to work and learn.
The awards showcased excellence in every area of the College, shining a spotlight on the efforts of staff who go above and beyond in their roles.
The event followed a landmark moment for the College, which earlier
this academic year received a glowing Ofsted report, earning a ‘Good’ rating across all areas and the highest possible judgement of ‘strong contribution to skills’. The awards served as a powerful reminder of the people behind that success—the staff who support students and strengthen the College’s role in the region.
Winners were recognised across a variety of categories, including Outstanding Contribution, Skills Champion, Mentorship, and Inclusivity Advocate—highlighting the breadth of talent and dedication across the College community.
Jasbir Dhesi OBE, Principal and CEO of Cheshire College South & West, expressed his pride in the College
community:
“ This year's Staff Awards were the biggest we have ever held. They were a chance to shine a light on the incredible people who make this College what it is”
“Coming after our successful Ofsted inspection, earlier this academic year, this was the perfect moment to say thank you and to celebrate the talent and teamwork that drives everything we do.”
The College extends its congratulations to all award winners and nominees, and thanks every member of staff for their continued dedication and impact.

CHESHIRE COLLEGE ACADEMY WEST WINS PRESTIGIOUS TOP TEAM AWARD AT CHESTER HOSPITALITY
PEOPLE AWARDS
Cheshire College – South & West is proud to announce that the Academy West team has won the Top Team Award at the Chester Hospitality People Awards 2025. This prestigious accolade celebrates outstanding innovation, proactivity, and exceptional results within Chester’s vibrant hospitality sector.
The Chester Hospitality People Awards, held on Thursday 26th June at Chester Racecourse, honoured Chester’s hospitality industry. The event featured 16 award categories and highlighted the remarkable talent and dedication that make the region’s hospitality sector exceptional.
Having been shortlisted among the region’s best, the tutors and support staff of Academy West continue to demonstrate impeccable knowledge, exceptional customer-focused planning, and significant contributions to the financial success of their operations — qualities that distinguished them as leaders in a highly competitive field.
Adam Gaunt-Evans, Hospitality Lecturer at Cheshire College, said: “ This award is a powerful acknowledgement of the hard work and dedication our team invests every day. It reflects not just our commitment to excellence, but also the collaborative spirit and passion that drives us to deliver an outstanding hospitality experience, both in education and in practice.”
Jasbir Dhesi OBE, Principal and
CEO of Cheshire College, added:
“ This Top Team Award highlights the exceptional dedication and expertise within our Academy West team. We are committed to delivering industry-leading education that not only equips our students with vital skills but also fosters a culture of innovation and excellence.”
“This recognition reinforces our role in shaping the future of hospitality and underlines the strength of our partnerships within the industry.”
The award-winning Academy West Restaurant, located at Cheshire College’s Ellesmere Port Campus,
offers a unique fine dining experience featuring locally sourced produce from Cheshire and the Wirral.
The restaurant holds several prestigious accreditations, including a Highly Commended College Rosette from AA Hotel Services and a Gold Accreditation & Centre of Excellence for Food & Beverage Service from People First.
The Academy West team also regularly partners with prestigious local venues, including Chester Cathedral and Chester Town Hall, showcasing their skills and expertise to the wider community.
Cheshire College – South & West proudly hosted the WorldSkills UK National Qualifiers for Culinary Arts and Restaurant Service on June 10th, 2025, at its state-of-the-art Crewe Campus.
The event brought together talented students from colleges across the region, all competing for a place at the prestigious UK finals later this year. The qualifiers form part of a nationwide series run by WorldSkills UK, a charity committed to raising standards in technical education and apprenticeships through high-impact skills competitions.
The Culinary Arts competition tested a wide range of kitchen expertise, while the Restaurant Service competition focused on front-of-house excellence, including formal dining, cocktail preparation, and silver service. All competitors were judged on technical ability, time management, customer service, hygiene, and professionalism.
CHESHIRE COLLEGE HOSTS NATIONAL QUALIFIERS FOR WORLDSKILLS UK HOSPITALITY COMPETITIONS
Results are still pending as the national qualifiers continue across the UK. The event at Cheshire College featured a wide range of skilled competitors representing the region’s hospitality sector.
Helen Nellist, Deputy Principal and
Deputy CEO at Cheshire College, said: “ We are delighted to have hosted the WorldSkills UK National Qualifiers here at our Crewe Campus. It’s a fantastic opportunity to shine a light on the quality of technical education and the incredible talent coming through our hospitality programmes. Competitions like these are vital in helping students build confidence, raise aspirations, and prepare for successful careers.”
John Holden, Lecturer in Hospitality and Catering at Cheshire College, who is also a World Skills UK Judge added: “ We were proud to host the national qualifiers here at our Crewe Campus. It provided an excellent platform for students and competitors from across the region to showcase their skills in a professional environment.”
“Events like this help prepare them for real-world challenges in the hospitality industry and highlight the high standards of technical education we offer.”
The Crewe Campus provided a dynamic and professional environment for the competition, reinforcing Cheshire College’s reputation as a regional leader in hospitality and catering education.
THE VALUE OF APPRENTICESHIPS: BUILDING SKILLS, CAREERS AND COMMUNITY AT CHESHIRE COLLEGE
Apprenticeships have become one of the most effective pathways for young people and career changers to gain valuable skills, hands-on experience and recognised qualifications—all while earning a wage.
But apprenticeships aren’t just for new or young recruits; they’re also an excellent way for businesses to upskill their existing teams and invest in the loyal people who are already making their business thrive.
They serve as a vital bridge between education and the workplace, helping to address skills shortages, fuel local economic growth, and support businesses in building a talented workforce ready to meet tomorrow’s challenges.
At Cheshire College – South & West, apprenticeships are much more than training programmes—they represent a commitment to fostering innovation, nurturing talent, and strengthening partnerships with leading employers like Bentley Motors.
“ Apprenticeships are at the heart of our mission to equip students with real-world skills that open doors to fulfilling careers,”
says Jasbir Dhesi OBE, Principal and CEO of Cheshire College.
“ By working closely with employers, we ensure our programmes remain relevant and impactful, benefiting both students and the local economy.”
From health and social care, engineering and manufacturing, to business, construction, digital technology, and hospitality, apprenticeships at Cheshire College are designed in collaboration with employers to meet current market needs. This means apprentices develop the exact skills, knowledge, and behaviours required to succeed in today’s competitive job market.
How Apprenticeships Work
Apprenticeships combine on-the-job training with classroom learning. While some apprentices may only work four days a week alongside one day in college, some apprenticeships involve little to no weekly college attendance,
depending on the course structure. They earn a salary from their employer while gaining nationally recognised qualifications.
Apprenticeships can last from 15 months up to four years, depending on the industry and the apprentice’s starting level. Anyone aged 16 or over who is not in full-time education can apply, with entry requirements varying by programme.
The College supports apprentices through every step, from matching them with suitable employers to providing financial advice and bursaries where eligible.
Bentley Motors: Investing in Tomorrow’s Talent Today
Bentley Motors, a global leader in luxury automotive manufacturing and a long-standing apprenticeship partner of Cheshire College, works closely with the College to provide apprenticeships across Manufacturing, Engineering, Business, Digital, and Project Management. This diverse range of programmes offers aspiring professionals hands-on experience and industry-relevant skills.
Nigel Tew, Director of Whole Vehicle Engineering at Bentley, stresses the importance of apprenticeships in the company’s future:
“ As we enter an exciting new era of electrified vehicles, it is essential for Bentley to establish a safe, reliable training infrastructure.
“Importantly, we need to ensure all our existing staff and new starters joining the business (including apprentices) follow approved training.”
The company also supports Cheshire College by providing access to its first-ever high-voltage hybrid vehicle, the Bentayga Hybrid, housed at the College’s dedicated training facility. This allows apprentices to develop expertise in cuttingedge technology and prepares them for the automotive sector’s evolving demands.
Beyond apprenticeship delivery, the partnership includes upskilling opportunities for Bentley’s wider workforce. For example, a bespoke training programme is helping nonengineering staff enhance their understanding of electronic systems—supporting the company’s transition towards autonomous and electric vehicles.
Jasbir Dhesi OBE, Principal and CEO of Cheshire College, commented on the strategic value of this ongoing collaboration:
“ Our partnership with Bentley Motors exemplifies how industry and education can come together to create meaningful opportunities for students and employers. By working closely with one of the world’s most prestigious automotive brands, we’re able to deliver cutting-edge training that benefits our students, supports business growth, and strengthens the regional economy.”
From Apprentice to Award Winner: Harry Grant’s Journey of Excellence
Harry Grant, a former Level 4 Engineering Manufacturing Technician apprentice at Bentley Motors, was named the Institute of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) Most Improved Apprentice of the Year.
Harry has developed advanced skills in complex manufacturing techniques and has taken on leadership responsibilities during his apprenticeship at Bentley Motors and Cheshire College. His progress throughout the programme has been recognised through awards and commendations.
“ Guiding Harry through his apprenticeship has been a privilege. His commitment to excellence and constant
drive to improve have earned him this well-deserved recognition.”
Harry himself acknowledges the support that made this possible:
“ I want to thank my tutors John and Dan, as well as Leslie for their invaluable guidance. It’s encouraging to see the hard work pay off and to be recognised at this level.”
Preparing Apprentices for Success
Helen Nellist, Deputy Principal and Deputy CEO of Cheshire College, also explains:
“ Harry’s success highlights the incredible potential of apprenticeships as a pathway to rewarding careers. His dedication and development reflect the high standards that our apprentices uphold, and it’s a testament to how apprenticeships can transform lives and industries alike.”
“Our apprenticeships blend academic learning with practical experience, so students gain qualifications alongside confidence and skills to thrive in the workplace. Partnerships with employers like Bentley ensure our training is current, relevant, and innovative.”
Helen added,
“ Collaborations with employers allow us to embed real-world challenges into our curriculum. This benefits students and ensures local businesses have access to skilled, job-ready talent.”
Looking Ahead: A Bright Future for Apprentices in South Cheshire
With a comprehensive range of apprenticeship options and strong links to industry, Cheshire College is well-positioned to help both individuals and businesses thrive. Apprenticeships provide learners with rewarding careers and give companies a competitive edge by building a highly skilled, adaptable workforce.

RAISE OVER £500 FOR
ALDER HEY CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL IN CHARITY FOOTBALL MATCH
The Uniformed Protective Services department at Cheshire College – South & West united to raise an impressive £568 for Alder Hey Children’s Hospital through a charity football match held at Ellesmere Port’s Sports Village, involving both students and staff.
The event brought together students across all course levels and provided a positive opportunity to build teamwork and community engagement, as many prepare to leave college and move forward into their careers.
Organised by the students themselves as part of an annual tradition, the group voted on the charity event they wished to host at the end of the academic year. This year, the students chose a football match to bring everyone together for a worthy cause.
In addition to raising funds, the event played a vital role in developing the students’ leadership, communication, and collaboration skills—key attributes for their future roles in protective services and beyond.
Helen Nellist, Deputy Principal at Cheshire College, commented:
“ We are incredibly proud of our students’ commitment both academically and within the community. Raising such a significant amount for Alder Hey Children’s Hospital shows their dedication and the positive impact they can make beyond the classroom.”
Jennifer Waddington, Lecturer in Sports and Uniformed Protective Services added:
“ I am absolutely delighted with each and every one of our students. They demonstrated
teamwork, resilience, unity, and friendship by collaborating closely with fellow students and staff. Everyone was in great spirits, making the event the perfect way to close an incredible year.”
