CHESHIRE COLLEGE HOSTS BIGGEST-EVER COMMUNITY FUN DAY
Cheshire College – South & West hosted its biggest-ever Community Fun Day, welcoming hundreds of families, local residents, and community groups to its campuses in Ellesmere Port, Chester, and Crewe on Saturday, 17th May.
Cheshire College – South & West has continued its track record as one of the region’s top educational institutions, earning a ‘Good’ rating across all areas, as well as being awarded the top grade of ‘strong contribution to skills’ in its latest Ofsted report.
Colleges across the country are subject to enhanced Ofsted inspections, which include a specific judgement on contribution to skills. This judgement is reached by assessing how the college identifies and meets regional skills needs, which contribute to a thriving economy. During the inspection in October 2024, Cheshire College was awarded the top outcome of ‘strong’ due to their highly successful relationships with employers, local authorities and communities, and commitment to collaboration.
The report recognises that the College’s collaborative approach has made a significant impact in preparing
students for success in a diverse range of industries, reinforcing the institution’s role as a key player in driving economic growth for Cheshire and beyond.
Inspectors highlighted the creation of skills bootcamps for engineering and rail, alongside new courses to develop skilled workers in hydrogen, smart metering and low carbon energy.
As the largest further education provider in the region with three sites: Ellesmere Port, Crewe and Chester, Cheshire College serves a diverse community. At the time of inspection, the College had over 4,600 students aged 16-18 enrolled on a wide variety of courses. The College also supports over 1,500 adult students and 650 apprenticeship students, catering to local people at different stages of their education.
Reflecting on the results, Jasbir Dhesi OBE, Principal and CEO of Cheshire College said: “ We are delighted with the outcome of our Ofsted inspection, which affirms the hard work and dedication of our staff and students. Achieving ‘Good’ across all areas with recognition for strong contribution to skills demonstrates our commitment
to delivering an exceptional learning experience and preparing our students for success in their future careers.”
The inspection report also commended the College’s approach to education, noting that students and apprentices are highly motivated and eager to learn, demonstrating positive and professional behaviours.
Dhesi emphasised that, “ By setting and maintaining high standards, we ensure that our students not only succeed academically but also develop the professional attitudes that will serve them well throughout their lives.”
In addition, the report praised the students’ access to high quality work placements and the broad extracurricular opportunities available, from chess to arts. Initiatives, such as the Scholars programme, foster academic development and prepare students for applying to Oxbridge and Russell Group universities.
Dhesi added, “ Our focus remains on building on our success, ensuring we continue to meet the needs of our students and provide them with the skills they need to succeed in an everevolving world.”

Cheshire College – South & West has unveiled brand new developments at its Crewe and Ellesmere Port Campuses as part of a significant investment programme comes to completion; enabling future students to develop their skills in cutting-edge facilities and fast track their careers.
After extensive work over the summer period, new and returning

Enhancements have been made across the Campus, including refurbishments to Crewe Campus’s award-winning Academy restaurant and the Elements salon, showcasing sleek, modern décor alongside the latest
industry-standard equipment for their respective industries. Both facilities are open to members of the public, allowing students to develop their skills to the highest levels by providing real service to real customers.
Students in visual and performing arts have also benefitted with new fashion and textile design studios that feature new printing beds, cutting
tables and lowered sewing desks with integrated power. The TV and media studio has been enhanced with new digital kit for film and lighting. Dance and rehearsal spaces have been updated
with new sprung floors to meet industry standards. The whole area has been enriched with increased natural light and modern LED lighting. This is in addition to recent updates in the
Esports studio that is set up with all kit necessary to host large gaming competitions.
This September, Ellesmere Port Campus also unveiled an industry standard ‘Hospital Ward’ which mirrors the same facility at Crewe Campus. The cutting-edge equipment, digital reality programmes, tactile models and life-like mannequins will enable students to simulate real working conditions in a hospital, making them highly desirable to both universities and employers.
Principal and CEO Jasbir Dhesi OBE emphasised the importance of remaining at the forefront of innovation at Cheshire College:
“ Our aim has always been to give our students every possible opportunity to achieve success; both during their time at College, and beyond. Having these facilities on site allows our students to grow in confidence and achieve a more rounded understanding of their studies which will benefit them for their future studies and employment.”
Developments at the Crewe Campus are set to continue as work on the Institute of Technology is well underway with the new building for technical education due to be unveiled in summer 2025.
THE VALUE OF APPRENTICESHIPS: BUILDING SKILLS, CAREERS AND COMMUNITY AT CHESHIRE COLLEGE
Apprenticeships have become one of the most effective pathways for young people and career changers to gain valuable skills, hands-on experience and recognised qualifications—all while earning a wage.
But apprenticeships aren’t just for new or young recruits; they’re also an excellent way for businesses to upskill their existing teams and invest in the loyal people who are already making their business thrive.
They serve as a vital bridge between education and the workplace, helping to address skills shortages, fuel local economic growth, and support businesses in building a talented workforce ready to meet tomorrow’s challenges.
At Cheshire College – South & West, apprenticeships are much more than training programmes—they represent a commitment to fostering innovation, nurturing talent, and strengthening partnerships with leading employers like Bentley Motors.
“ Apprenticeships are at the heart of our mission to equip students with real-world skills that open doors to fulfilling careers,”
says Jasbir Dhesi OBE, Principal and CEO of Cheshire College.
“ By working closely with employers, we ensure our programmes remain relevant and impactful, benefiting both students and the local economy.”
From health and social care, engineering and manufacturing, to business, construction, digital technology, and hospitality, apprenticeships at Cheshire College are designed in collaboration with employers to meet current market needs. This means apprentices develop the exact skills, knowledge, and behaviours required to succeed in today’s competitive job market.
How Apprenticeships Work
Apprenticeships combine on-the-job training with classroom learning. While some apprentices may only work four days a week alongside one day in college, some apprenticeships involve little to no weekly college attendance,
depending on the course structure. They earn a salary from their employer while gaining nationally recognised qualifications.
Apprenticeships can last from 15 months up to four years, depending on the industry and the apprentice’s starting level. Anyone aged 16 or over who is not in full-time education can apply, with entry requirements varying by programme.
The College supports apprentices through every step, from matching them with suitable employers to providing financial advice and bursaries where eligible.
Bentley Motors: Investing in Tomorrow’s Talent Today
Bentley Motors, a global leader in luxury automotive manufacturing and a long-standing apprenticeship partner of Cheshire College, works closely with the College to provide apprenticeships across Manufacturing, Engineering, Business, Digital, and Project Management. This diverse range of programmes offers aspiring professionals hands-on experience and industry-relevant skills.
Nigel Tew, Director of Whole Vehicle Engineering at Bentley, stresses the importance of apprenticeships in the company’s future:
“ As we enter an exciting new era of electrified vehicles, it is essential for Bentley to establish a safe, reliable training infrastructure.
“Importantly, we need to ensure all our existing staff and new starters joining the business (including apprentices) follow approved training.”
The company also supports Cheshire College by providing access to its first-ever high-voltage hybrid vehicle, the Bentayga Hybrid, housed at the College’s dedicated training facility. This allows apprentices to develop expertise in cuttingedge technology and prepares them for the automotive sector’s evolving demands.
Beyond apprenticeship delivery, the partnership includes upskilling opportunities for Bentley’s wider workforce. For example, a bespoke training programme is helping nonengineering staff enhance their understanding of electronic systems—supporting the company’s transition towards autonomous and electric vehicles.
Jasbir Dhesi OBE, Principal and CEO of Cheshire College, commented on the strategic value of this ongoing collaboration:
“ Our partnership with Bentley Motors exemplifies how industry and education can come together to create meaningful opportunities for students and employers. By working closely with one of the world’s most prestigious automotive brands, we’re able to deliver cutting-edge training that benefits our students, supports business growth, and strengthens the regional economy.”
From Apprentice to Award Winner: Harry Grant’s Journey of Excellence
Harry Grant, a former Level 4 Engineering Manufacturing Technician apprentice at Bentley Motors, was named the Institute of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) Most Improved Apprentice of the Year.
Harry has developed advanced skills in complex manufacturing techniques and has taken on leadership responsibilities during his apprenticeship at Bentley Motors and Cheshire College. His progress throughout the programme has been recognised through awards and commendations.
“ Guiding Harry through his apprenticeship has been a privilege. His commitment to excellence and constant
drive to improve have earned him this well-deserved recognition.”
Harry himself acknowledges the support that made this possible:
“ I want to thank my tutors John and Dan, as well as Leslie for their invaluable guidance. It’s encouraging to see the hard work pay off and to be recognised at this level.”
Preparing Apprentices for Success
Helen Nellist, Deputy Principal and Deputy CEO of Cheshire College, also explains:
“ Harry’s success highlights the incredible potential of apprenticeships as a pathway to rewarding careers. His dedication and development reflect the high standards that our apprentices uphold, and it’s a testament to how apprenticeships can transform lives and industries alike.”
“Our apprenticeships blend academic learning with practical experience, so students gain qualifications alongside confidence and skills to thrive in the workplace. Partnerships with employers like Bentley ensure our training is current, relevant, and innovative.”
Helen added,
“ Collaborations with employers allow us to embed real-world challenges into our curriculum. This benefits students and ensures local businesses have access to skilled, job-ready talent.”
Looking Ahead: A Bright Future for Apprentices in South Cheshire
With a comprehensive range of apprenticeship options and strong links to industry, Cheshire College is well-positioned to help both individuals and businesses thrive. NEW HORIZONS: ADULTS CHANGE CAREERS AND LAND JOBS WITH MAJOR AIRLINES FOLLOWING CABIN CREW COURSE AT CHESHIRE COLLEGE
Three adult students from Cheshire College – South & West have already secured jobs with leading airlines after completing the Cabin Crew training course at the College’s Ellesmere Port Campus.
The course, designed for adults
looking to change careers or re-enter the workforce, has seen quick success — with students now preparing to start new roles at Ryanair, EasyJet, and Virgin Atlantic. Out of eight adults enrolled in the programme, nearly half have already received job offers just
weeks after completing their training. Ruth Szolkowska, Vice Principal – Innovation, Curriculum and Quality, praised the course’s impact: “ We’re proud to offer training that opens real doors for adults looking for a fresh start or a new challenge.
These students are proof that with ambition and the right support, you can transform your career and your future. The success of this group speaks volumes about the quality of our teaching and the demand for skilled, job-ready candidates in the travel industry.”
The Cabin Crew course includes hands-on experience and practical assessments, tailored to airline requirements.
Sarah Broady, Course Lecturer and experienced industry professional, added:
“ From day one, our students showed real enthusiasm for joining the aviation industry — many coming from completely different career backgrounds. Throughout the course, I’ve watched their confidence,
professionalism and skills grow week by week.”
“It’s incredible to see them now stepping into their dream roles.”
Successful student, Nicky Taylor, who will be joining Virgin Atlantic, shared:
“
Becoming cabin crew was a childhood dream I never thought I’d achieve. I started out in the beauty industry and later became a nurse, so my background is really varied — but I wanted to do something completely different.”
“The facilities at the College are fantastic, and it’s been such a great course. Life is far too short, and you’re never too old to start again. I’ve now secured a job with Virgin Atlantic and I’m just waiting for my training date — then I’ll be up in the skies!”

CHESHIRE COLLEGE AND BELONG VILLAGES UNITE TO TRANSFORM DEMENTIA CARE EDUCATION
Cheshire College – South & West is proud to announce an exciting new partnership with Belong, a pioneering not-for-profit organisation redefining dementia care. The collaboration marks a significant step towards enhancing education and career opportunities in the health and social care sector.
Belong has been at the forefront of innovative dementia care, integrating services, housing, and community within their award-winning Belong villages.
The partnership journey began in 2024, with an initial visit to Belong Chester Village, where discussions focused on exploring collaboration opportunities. This was followed by a site visit to the College’s Crewe campus in July to further shape the partnership and identify areas for mutual development.
In August, the two organisations began refining tailored learning programmes, setting the stage for the integration of specialised training
solutions designed to meet the evolving needs of the health and social care sector.
January 2025 marked a key milestone: the development of a new training space at the Crewe campus, designed to replicate Belong’s household care settings. The space will provide students with hands-on training in a realistic care setting, allowing them to experience firsthand the high standards of care that Belong is known for.
By mirroring the layout and functionality of a real Belong household, students will develop practical skills and a deep understanding of best practices in person-centred care before entering the workforce.
This collaboration will provide students with invaluable hands-on experience in dementia care, bridging the gap between education and employment.
Through work experience at Belong villages, apprenticeships, and T-Level placements, students will gain practical insight into industry best practices
while developing essential skills.
Tailored learning courses will be designed to align with sector demands, improving employability, while additional initiatives such as guest speaker sessions, curriculum enrichment, and digital projects will further enhance the student learning experience.
Helen Nellist Deputy Principal and Deputy CEO of Cheshire College, highlighted the significance of the partnership, stating:
“ This represents a remarkable opportunity for students to engage with industry-leading dementia care models, develop essential skills, and contribute meaningfully to the care sector.”
“By working with Belong, we are shaping the future of healthcare education and ensuring our students are workforce ready.”
Brendan Conlon, Learning and Development Manager at Belong Villages, echoed this enthusiasm:
“ This partnership is an exciting opportunity to bridge the gap between education and industry. By working closely with Cheshire College, we can create a pipeline of skilled professionals who are equipped to provide the highest standard of care.”
As the partnership progresses, both organisations remain committed to continuous improvement and innovation, ensuring students receive the best possible education while making a real difference in the lives of those living with dementia.
