CHESHIRE COLLEGE HOSTS BIGGEST-EVER COMMUNITY FUN DAY

Cheshire College – South & West hosted its biggest-ever Community Fun Day, welcoming hundreds of families, local residents, and community groups to its campuses in Ellesmere Port, Chester, and Crewe on Saturday, 17th May. The free event was a huge success, offering a vibrant mix of

activities and entertainment for all ages, making it a day to remember for the local community.

The event featured a wide array of attractions, including interactive games, craft stations, children’s entertainment, and hands-on workshops. Community stalls lined the campuses, offering

information, products, and services to attendees, while delicious food and refreshments were available throughout the day.

At the Crewe Campus, the highlight of the day was the vibrant Crewe Out Loud Festival, a dynamic showcase of music, drama, dance, and art, featuring

performances by students from local schools.

Pupils from schools such as The Oaks Academy, St Thomas More Catholic High School, and Monks Coppenhall Academy brought the campus to life with their incredible talents, creating a truly celebratory atmosphere.

Jasbir Dhesi OBE, Principal and CEO of Cheshire College – South & West, expressed his delight at the success of the event:

“ We are thrilled with the turnout for our Community Fun Day and the fantastic atmosphere across all three campuses. It was a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the strong bonds we have with our local communities and to showcase the creativity and talent of our young people,” he said.

“We are proud to offer an event where families can come together, enjoy activities, and discover the wide range of educational opportunities available at Cheshire College.”

The Community Fun Day also provided an opportunity for prospective students and their families to explore

the College’s facilities, meet staff members, and gain insight into the full range of courses offered across the three campuses.

This year’s event proved to be the College’s largest and most successful, bringing people from

across the community together for a day of fun, discovery, and connection. Cheshire College – South & West is already looking forward to next year’s celebration and the opportunity to continue fostering strong ties with the local community.

CHESHIRE COLLEGE STUDENT SECURES PRESTIGIOUS APPRENTICESHIP WITH RINGWAY JACOBS

Cheshire College – South & West is celebrating the success of A Level student Sam Linde, who has secured a highly competitive Project Management Degree Apprenticeship with Ringway Jacobs, starting this June.

Sam, 18, currently studies Economics, Business, and Politics at the College and has been recognised for his determination and forward-thinking career ambitions.

His decision to follow the apprenticeship route was inspired by his experience in the College’s Honours Programme—a tailored initiative designed for high-achieving students aiming for top universities, apprenticeships, or competitive employment.

“ If it wasn’t for the Honours Scheme, I wouldn't have considered applying for apprenticeships,” Sam said. “It really opened my eyes to other opportunities.”

The Honours Programme, delivered in four five-week blocks during the first year of Level 3 study, offers bespoke support through its four specialist pathways: Aspiring Scientists, Aspiring Leaders, Aspiring Creators, and Aspiring Academics. Students benefit from academic skills development, industry networking events, and application workshops that help them stand out in a competitive landscape.

Supported by friends and staff, Sam applied to multiple high-profile schemes last summer. He praised the College’s inclusive and flexible environment for

helping him manage the demanding interview process.

“ My tutors were really supportive and allowed me the flexibility I needed to attend interviews,” he said.

Sam’s new role with Ringway Jacobs will see him combining fulltime work with part-time study at Nottingham University—giving him the chance to gain valuable industry experience while earning a degree.

“ I want to get into my career as soon as I can, gain real-world experience, and start earning while I learn,” Sam explained. “Eventually, I’d love to move into programme management—my dad’s been a big influence on that ambition.”

Offering advice to future students, Sam added:

“ Work hard and build habits your future self will thank you for. Imagine your life as if it were being broadcast—would you be proud of what others see? That mindset helped shape who I’ve become.”

Ruth Szolkowska, Vice Principal of Innovation, Curriculum and Quality at Cheshire College, praised Sam’s achievement:

“ Sam is a fantastic example of what’s possible when students make the most of the opportunities available to them. We’re incredibly proud and excited to see where this next chapter takes him.”

Cheshire College is incredibly proud of Sam’s achievements and wishes him every success in his exciting new career.

AWARD WINNERS

CHESHIRE COLLEGE STUDENT

NAMED T LEVEL STUDENT OF THE YEAR FOR THE NORTH WEST

Cheshire College – South & West is celebrating the success of Aaron Brown, a second-year T Level student in Digital Production, Design and Development, who has been named T Level Student of the Year for the North West by Lloyds Banking Group.

Aaron’s award follows an outstanding industry placement with Lloyds Banking Group, where he impressed with his technical skill and professionalism. Selected through a highly competitive process, Aaron is now one of just four regional winners nationwide and will compete for the national title at Lloyds’s London headquarters in June.

“ It feels absolutely fantastic to be given the award and the opportunity to go down to London and potentially become the national T Level winner,” said Aaron. “It shows that if you put in the hard work, you can get something out of it.”

During his placement, Aaron was part of the Customer Affordability and Value Optimisation team, gaining hands-on experience and completing extensive training.

“ I went through quite a lot of training,” he explained. “We were divided into different teams, and I was

in Customer Affordability and Value Optimisation. I’ve even been offered a Level 4 apprenticeship in Data Analysis at Lloyds—it’s an amazing next step.”

Aaron has also been put forward by Lloyds for the Department for Education T Level Awards.

When asked what advice he’d give to others considering T Levels, Aaron shared:

“ Definitely work hard and always ask questions. It shows you're interested—and that makes a big difference.”

The Lloyds Banking Group Apprenticeship & T Level Awards celebrate students who demonstrate excellence in technical education and make a real impact during their placements.

Jasbir Dhesi OBE, Principal and CEO of Cheshire College – South & West, commented:

“ Aaron’s success shows

the power of T Levels to transform futures. He’s a shining example of what happens when talent meets opportunity, and we couldn’t be prouder.”

T Levels—a mix of classroom learning and real-world experience— have proven to be a strong foundation for Aaron’s career. His story highlights both the value of technical education and the strength of the College’s industry partnerships.

As the national final approaches, Cheshire College proudly supports Aaron and continues to champion the opportunities T Levels bring to students across the region.

Choosing Higher Education at Cheshire College – South & West will provide you with the opportunity to study locally at one of our three cutting-edge Campuses based in Cheshire.

STRONG DEMAND FOR CHESHIRE COLLEGE’S FREE TRANSPORT OFFER AHEAD OF 2025-26

Cheshire College is seeing a surge in applications for its free transport offer for the 2025–26 academic year. A notably high volume of applications has already been received — reflecting continued strong interest in the offer.

The initiative continues to provide free transport for all full-time students aged 16 to 18 who live more than a mile from their chosen campus. This decision makes Cheshire College one of the few institutions in the region still offering such a service, underscoring its strong commitment to support students. Students from a wide catchment — including Cheshire, Staffordshire, The Wirral, North Wales and surrounding areas — benefit from a comprehensive, cost-free travel network. The initiative not only eases financial strain but also empowers students to focus fully on their education and future career paths.

“ We know that transport can be a major obstacle for young people trying to access further education,” said Jasbir Dhesi OBE, Principal and CEO of Cheshire College.

“That’s why we’re proud to continue offering free travel. It’s about giving every student the chance to thrive, without the burden of extra costs standing in the way of their aspirations.”

Students travelling to the Crewe Campus can take advantage of a broad network of dedicated College Coach services. Those attending the Ellesmere Port and Chester campuses can use public transport options with the College covering the cost or support via County Council schemes where applicable.

All routes and timetables are available via the College’s website, making it easy for students and parents to plan journeys in advance.

As part of its wider sustainability efforts, the College continues to support cycling through the provision of secure bike storage, ample cycle racks, and on-site changing facilities — offering a practical, eco-friendly option for students who live nearby.

There is also support available to help with the other costs of attending college. For 16 to 18-year-olds, the Bursary Fund offers financial assistance to help students remain in education. The College provides free breakfast and

lunch to all students on campus during their studies.

Parents under 20 can access childcare support through the Care to Learn scheme, and students from Wales may qualify for an Education Maintenance Allowance if they travel to Cheshire College.

The College also offers financial support for adult students aged 19+, including free courses (subject to eligibility), help with travel, childcare, course materials, and more. Students on Level 3 or 4 courses can apply for an Advanced Learner Loan and may also access a bursary to cover additional costs.

FREE TRANSPORT APPLY FOR

We're now accepting applications for FREE transport for the 2025/2026 academic year.

FROM ELLESMERE PORT TO THE CARIBBEAN: FORMER CHESHIRE COLLEGE STUDENTS RETURN

FROM

LIFECHANGING CULINARY INTERNSHIP

Cheshire College – South & West is celebrating the success of former Hospitality and Catering students

Nathan and Finn, who have returned from a transformative internship with the renowned Rocks Group in the Caribbean.

The pair, who trained at the

Ellesmere Port Campus, spent several months working at Sheer Rocks—one of the Caribbean’s most prestigious restaurants in Antigua —gaining handson experience in a fast-paced, worldclass kitchen.

Nathan, who completed Levels 1 to 3 in Hospitality and Catering, credited

his time at the College as key to launching his culinary career.

“ I’ve grown so much in confidence thanks to the course and the incredible tutors. I’ve competed across the country and started building a name for myself,” he said.

Nathan credited his former tutor,

Adam Gaunt-Evans, whose longstanding industry connections helped open the door to the internship.

“ It was through Adam and his friendship with Alex Grimley, owner of Rocks Group, that this incredible opportunity came about,” Nathan explained.”

“We started on prep, learned about local produce, and worked our way through cold larder, sauces, and garnish. It was tough, but life-changing - I learnt about new ingredients, different kitchen environments, and how to adapt to a completely new culture.”

Together, Nathan and Finn faced new challenges in a completely different kitchen culture – from unfamiliar ingredients to high temperatures and a faster pace of service.

Adam Gaunt-Evans, praised both for their determination:

“ The students hard work, humility and hunger to learn stood out from day one. I’m proud to have played a small part in helping them take this step into the wider world of hospitality.”

Principal and CEO of Cheshire College – South & West, Jasbir Dhesi OBE, echoed these sentiments:

“ Nathan and Finn’s success is a fantastic example of what can be achieved when passion and determination are supported by expert teaching, real-world experience, and

strong industry links. We’re incredibly proud of them both and thrilled their journey began with us.”

Now back in the UK, both students are looking to the future—Nathan hopes to bring his global experience into a high-end local kitchen and continue refining his craft.

CHESHIRE COLLEGE UNVEILS WELLBEING GARDEN AFTER INSPIRING COLLABORATION WITH CHESTER ZOO

A once unused outdoor space at Cheshire College – South & West’s Ellesmere Port Campus has been transformed into a colourful Wellbeing Garden, thanks to Entry Level students working in partnership with Chester Zoo.

The garden is the result of a yearlong collaboration that gave students the opportunity to explore nature, sustainability, and wellbeing through a series of engaging, hands-on activities. Inspired by the zoo’s conservation initiatives, students developed their own ideas and brought them to life— creating a peaceful green space for

reflection and relaxation on campus.

The project was officially unveiled on Thursday 22 May, with a special launch event attended by Principal and CEO Jasbir Dhesi OBE, senior leaders, staff, and members of the wider college community. Guests were guided through the garden by students themselves, who also delivered a presentation reflecting on their journey, achievements, and the personal growth they experienced throughout the project.

“ This collaboration is a shining example of what can be achieved when education, community,

and creativity come together,”

said Jasbir Dhesi OBE, Principal and CEO of Cheshire College.

“I’m incredibly proud of our Entry Level students for their passion and ownership of this project. The garden is a beautiful addition to our campus, and a space that will benefit students and staff for years to come.”

The project forms part of Cheshire College’s wider commitment to inclusive, community-connected learning and supports Chester Zoo’s ‘Networks for Nature’ initiative, which encourages local conservation action through education and partnership.
