FOOTBALL STAR GARY NEVILLE INSPIRES STUDENTS AT CHESHIRE COLLEGE
Students and staff at Cheshire College – South & West were delighted to welcome football legend Gary Neville to Crewe Campus on Thursday 29th February.
Neville’s prolific career spans across the worlds of sport, broadcasting and education, having spent his entire football career at Manchester United, he is one of the most successful English footballers, with over twenty trophies under his belt including eight premier league titles and two UEFA Championship League titles. Neville has represented his country and is England’s most capped right-back of all time. Following his footballing career, Gary went on to excel in the commercial sector and co-founded Salford City Football Club and the University Academy 92, as well as his most recent guest appearance on BBC’s Dragons’ Den.
Over 700 students attended Neville’s talk, which inspired students with insight into his professional football career, and transition into broadcasting and business ventures. Sharing with students the lessons he has learnt, and the importance of resilience, ambition and hard work. Neville stated:
“ Education is a vitally important part of your career journey, giving you the knowledge and skills to be able to navigate your next steps. If you can combine that knowledge with a willingness to work hard and do your best every day, that’s what will give you every chance of doing well in your
future. It has been great to share my story with the students at Cheshire College and be a small part of their journey.”
Students and staff alike were inspired by Neville’s work including Elliot, who is currently studying Esports at the College:
“ I found out about Gary Neville through Dragon’s Den and I found this talk really interesting and motivational from a business perspective. I’m hoping to build an Esports business in the local area when I leave College, so today’s talk gave me a lot to think about.”
“ I’ve been following Gary’s career since his football days. He’s a very inspiring man and I have a lot
of respect for him. Today’s talk was inspiring and motivational, and I admired his message about pushing yourself to succeed.”
Principal and CEO of Cheshire College, Jasbir Dhesi OBE thanked Neville for his continued contributions to education and for inspiring the next generation:
“ We were all delighted to meet Gary and to hear him share his insight with our students.
“Cheshire College recently partnered with University Academy 92 as part of our Futures Programme, so we’re very familiar with his incredible work. From speaking with those who attended the talk, it’s clear that everyone left feeling inspired and determined to push themselves to even greater heights.”
We were over the moon to welcome Gary Neville to Crewe Campus for a special sit-down interview and Q&A with our students.

FE COMMISSIONER PAYS SPECIAL VISIT TO CHESHIRE COLLEGE
Cheshire College – South & West was delighted to welcome Further Education Commissioner Shelagh Legrave CBE to its Crewe Campus earlier this week.
Legrave was greeted by Principal and CEO Jasbir Dhesi OBE, Deputy Principal Helen Nellist, and Chair of the Cheshire College Corporation Lesley Davies CBE, who all gave the FE Commissioner a personalised guided tour of the site.
Among the facilities which Legrave visited on her tour were the spacious Art & Design classrooms, the modern, state-of-the-art gaming rooms for Esports students, and the College’s new £150K training hospital ward which
features cutting-edge dental simulation equipment, digital reality programmes, tactile models and life-like mannequins, and specialist teaching staff.
In the hospital ward, Legrave was also shown one of the site’s cuttingedge Anatomage tables; the most technologically advanced 3D anatomy visualisation and virtual dissection tool for anatomy and physiology education, which is used by many of the world’s leading medical institutions.
Legrave’s tour concluded her visit by meeting members of the College’s Student Senate, who shared details of their individual Senate roles, their reasons for choosing to study at Cheshire College, and their reflections
on their student experience.
The Commissioner appeared pleased to learn that students could travel to Campus from further afield via the College’s free transport services, after speaking with a Senate member who travelled in from Shropshire.
After the College shared the news of Legrave’s visit on social media, the Commissioner responded to a tweet on X (formerly Twitter) with the following message: “ Thank you @CheshireCollSW for hosting me. What a stunning college and supporting a very rural area with high quality provision.”

INTERVIEW WITH CHAIR OF THE CHESHIRE COLLEGE CORPORATION LESLEY DAVIES CBE
: Hello Lesley, it is good to meet you in your capacity as Chair of Governors. Firstly, can you explain what the role of a College Governor is for those that may not know?
A: The key role of College Governors is to support and to challenge the leaders of the College to ensure that the interests of our staff and students is at the forefront of our strategies and actions. Governors also play a vital role in setting the strategic direction of the College and governors also have a link responsibility, which entails getting to know the staff and students in a particular curriculum area to really get to know what students experience at the College.
We are very fortunate at this College; our Governors bring a wealth of experience and work in a range of industries including finance, retail, local and regional businesses, and higher education.
It is a demanding role as, although its voluntary, many Governors have existing full time jobs or other personal commitments.
: What are the biggest challenges you believe you’ll face over the next year?
A: Cheshire College South & West is a good College but like most, we will be, no doubt, be faced with challenges in areas such as funding, curriculum change and continuing to prompt apprenticeships to local employers. There will also be a general election within the next year and who knows what changes to our education system that may bring.
The future is always uncertain- but I know that the College’s staff and Governors will always ensure that the College is supportive of the local communities it serves and where people can continue to develop the core skills needed to improve their employment opportunities. Students of all ages will be provided with information and guidance to navigate the educational landscape.
: Can you tell us a bit more about your career to date and why you chose to join Cheshire College?
A: I have worked in the Further Education (FE) sector for most of my career. In all my various roles I have always passionately believed in the power of further education and what it can achieve for students regardless of age, background and experience. The work of our staff changes lives and
improves life chances and I am always impressed by their work and dedication.
My last full-time role was as CEO and Principal of The Trafford College Group. Since leaving I have supported several colleges, and prior to Cheshire I chaired a college that needed some additional support. When I left there were good governance arrangements in place to support the college and a strong leadership team ensuring students had a good experience whilst in education.
I have kept a close eye on Cheshire College as it is my local college. It was my good fortune that the College’s Chair of Governors, Dame Pat Bacon, was retiring this year and the opportunity for a new Chair became available. I was very fortunate that the timing worked out.
The role is incredibly important to me. As I said, Cheshire College is my local College and I have a vested interest in the community, and it is a privilege to work in the further education sector and a pleasure to work with staff and students. I have had a great start meeting so many dedicated staff and students at the College.
: In 2016, you were the Founding Chair of the UK Skills Partnership Board, a network of the UK’s leading education sector organisations. Can you tell us a bit more about the network, who it benefits and how?
A: The Board was put together by the Department of International Trade and the members consisted of Chief Executives and Senior Directors of education and skills associations representing the whole skills sector. Members included the Association of Colleges (AoC), Universities UK, WorldSkills, Federation of Awarding Bodies, Joint Council for Qualifications, British Council and the Department for International Trade.
The main purpose of the group was to work together to support the implementation of the UK’s International Education Strategy (IES) and to showcase our education system and grow our international business.
In my role as Chair, it was a privilege to represent the group on the DTI’s Education Sector Advisory Board. It was a very rewarding role and it was great to see how young people benefitted from international study which helped widen their perspective, better understand and experience other cultures and also helped build independence and resilience.
: Why is education, and having a role within this sector, important to you?
A: I am a passionate supporter of FE and have always been in every role I have taken throughout my career in education.
I have seen young people come through the system at 16 who have challenging circumstances, have not been able to thrive, not because they are not motivated but because they have needed the right support. No matter what educational or training path a student wants to go down, an FE College provides a new type of learning for students to explore in a supportive environment. I have seen, first hand, how FE changes lives and it is wonderful to see so many people go on and achieve success and excel in adult life.
Colleges make a difference to our students’ life chances and when I look at Cheshire College specifically, our vocational training is fantastic and equips each student to succeed and achieve what they set out to accomplish.
As you’ve worked in education and training for the majority of your career so far, we’re curious - what would you say are the standout qualities of Cheshire College?
A: The College is close to employers and understands not only what employers are looking for when they recruit but also what the UK’s economy needs to be highly productive. The College works hard to ensure that the education and training it offers provides young people and adults with the knowledge, skills and experiences they will need to go on to have successful careers. The College has also secured significant investment to update its estate and teaching and learning resources. For example, at Crewe campus the College has just
developed a hospital ward which can be used to develop health care skills for those wishing to progress into the nursing and other allied professions. At Ellesmere Port the hair and beauty room has been redeveloped and the College currently has government support for an Institute of Technology which will provide qualifications for those wishing to study at higher technical levels.
The College has also put together a strong programme of courses and a team of supportive staff who are confident in how they can continue to help students move forward into a sustainable future.
: In 2023, you were made a Commander of the British Empire (CBE) in the New Year’s Honours List. What was that experience like?
A: Yes – what a wonderful surprise!
I received an email from the Cabinet Office which said, ‘You must read this letter and answer by Friday.’ I had to read it about three times before it sunk in, and sometimes even now I still can’t believe it.
I had been honoured before (with an OBE) so I never in a million years expected anything like that to happen again.
: In terms of life outside of your role, what do you like to do in your spare time?
A: I have to say my passion is learning and I am a constant student myself. My enjoyment is all about what more can I learn.
Whether it be short courses or a single lecture, I am curious about the world and keen to explore new topics and keep myself updated with the latest thinking on a range of subjects.
The most recent programme I attended was a 12-week course on the Persian empire, all online with a live lecturer and some home reading. I’m not sure what I will sign up for next!
I am also kept busy with my voluntary work which includes working with the Royal British Legion.
: Looking ahead to this academic year, how would you say our staff, students and Governors can best support each other this year?
A: There is an open culture I love about Cheshire College, and it aligns with my personal mantra that you can always improve and do things better.
We are a brilliant College and have fantastic students, but it is important we do not rest on our laurels. We need to look ahead and see what we can do to make things even better for our staff and students and ensure we continuously improve.
Thanks for your time, Lesley. It was lovely to get to know you more and we’re looking forward to seeing you around Campus!

STUDENTS ‘PULL APART THE MYTH OF FAST FASHION’ AT CHESHIRE COLLEGE
Fashion students at Cheshire College – South & West’s Chester Campus participated in a huge collaborative project to promote sustainability in the fashion industry this month.
Students got involved at every level of creation, organisation and promotion for the event; deciding on the name, logo and tagline for the project (‘Unravelled: Pulling apart the myth of fast fashion’) and creating a themed Instagram account to spread the word about the occasion.
In the run-up to the main event on 20th March, Fashion students undertook an upcycling workshop on Tuesday 19th March, which was held across three classes. Teams of students had to work together to upcycle three garments in less than 3 ½ hours.
The finished products were then exhibited in the Campus’s main foyer where they could be seen and admired by all students, staff and visitors.
Chester Campus’s Photography students collaborated with the event organisers, taking high-quality photos of the finished garments and models.
Level 3 Fashion Business & Retail student Scarlett said:
“ Putting the outfits together was my favourite part of the whole event! Working behind the scenes, deciding who needs to wear what, and helping to bring it all together was amazing.
“I’m thinking about a career as a fashion buyer and sustainability is a main part of the job, so the ‘Unravelled’ event will be really beneficial for my future.”
Chester Campus also played host to sustainability talks by prominent figures in the fashion industry, including a Q&A with the Director of Cheshire Fashion Week (CFW), Claire Namukolo Raven, who shared the various ways that CFW champions sustainability.
Also in attendance was a former Cheshire College Art & Design Lecturer Rachel Davies, who is now working as a freelance artist and makes frequent use of textiles for her work. Rachel demonstrated how to elevate and innovate items without creating the damaging textile waste of the fast fashion cycle.
Level 3 student Alex said of the talks: “ The meetings with Claire and Rachel were so informative; they
were giving first-hand advice for our dream lives!
“As the fashion community is forever growing, it is important to be ethical and sustainable when thinking of fashion, as it’s one of the top waste producers. We all need to recognise our contribution and combat the negatives to create change.”
The Campus also hosted a Swap Shop Clothing Exchange which encouraged students to bring in their unwanted clothing which they could then exchange for a different item of preloved clothing. All unclaimed clothing at the end of the day was donated to local charity providers, in line with ethical practices.
Choosing Higher Education at Cheshire College – South & West will provide you with the opportunity to study locally at one of our three cutting-edge Campuses based in Cheshire.

CHESHIRE COLLEGE PRINCIPAL HAND-PICKED FOR DOWNING STREET RECEPTION
Cheshire College – South & West’s Principal and CEO Jasbir Dhesi OBE attended an exclusive reception at Downing Street earlier this month.
The event was hosted by Lord Lingfield, Chairman of the Council for the Chartered Institute for Further Education (FE), where a group of handpicked leaders in FE came together from across the country to celebrate the work being carried out across the sector to respond to the skills need in the UK.
According to an Employer Skills Survey published by the government in September 2023, more than a third (36%) of all vacancies in 2022 were skill-shortage vacancies; in which employers judged an employee to lack full proficiency for their role.
Principal Dhesi’s meeting with Lord Lingfield was in recognition of his outstanding contributions to education and Cheshire College’s continued commitment to addressing the skills need under his leadership.
On Cheshire College’s role in closing the skills gap, Dhesi commented:

We have significantly invested in new facilities across our Crewe, Ellesmere Port and Chester sites, and this will enable students to experience the latest, cutting-edge technologies widely used by today’s employers.”
Cheshire College’s latest facilities include a £150K hospital training ward at Crewe Campus, which provides a
The Construction & Engineering department has also benefitted from a £10M+ investment, obtaining resources such as 3D printers, CAD equipment, robotics, and a new motor-vehicle workshop which can service electric and hybrid vehicles.
Cheshire College is also set to benefit from a £6M investment as part of Cheshire and Warrington Institute of Technology. This prestigious project will equip young people with the technical skills they need in priority areas such as advanced manufacturing, digital and cyber security, health and life sciences, construction, science and maths.

One of Cheshire College’s former adult students, Kelly, provided a quote for the adult guide after completing a Level 2 Construction course at the College. Kelly stated:

“As a result of completing my course, I am about to complete the foundation year for my Interior Design Degree and look forward to setting up my own business in the not-too-distant future.”
Principal and CEO Jasbir Dhesi OBE said that the new adult guide will

CHESHIRE AND WARRINGTON
PROVIDERS COME TOGETHER TO HOST SUCCESSFUL SKILLS FOR THE FUTURE EVENT AT CHESTER ZOO
Colleges, employers and training providers came together to host an exclusive employer and stakeholder event at Chester Zoo in April.
Cheshire & Warrington: Skills For The Future was an opportunity for local Colleges and providers to share updates pertaining to innovative developments in supporting skills for the future; as well as a chance for guests to network with each other and explore ways to
strengthen collaborations between providers. The event was attended by over 70 guests, which included education providers, private training providers and employers from across the region.
BT Digital’s Emerging Talent Programme Manager, Reace Wade, acted as Keynote Speaker for the event. In keeping with the Skills For The Future theme, Wade is responsible
for the Digital Graduate, Industrial Placements and Apprenticeship programmes at his organisation, ensuring they meet the current and future needs of the BT Group.
Also headlining the event were Sarah Emes-Young, Project Lead for the Local Skills Improvement Plan (Cheshire & Warrington), and Trevor Langston, the Pledge Lead for the Cheshire & Warrington Pledge.
After breakfast and networking, guests participated in a collaborative workshop to design and create a roadmap for the skills agenda within the region. The activity inspired spirited discussions within the different groups, leading to informed and creative roadmaps to close the skills gap and improve upon current progress.
Karen Roberts, Assistant Principal for Apprenticeships and Employer Engagement at Cheshire College, said: “ At Cheshire College, we work continuously to ensure that students have the required skills and knowledge to succeed in their chosen industries.
“ However, we are vigilant to the possibility of future skills shortages in the local area, which is why preemptive planning and collaboration with our fellow education providers and local businesses is so important. We were delighted with the turn-out for the event, and it’s exciting to see so many ideas and plans to support skills needs in Cheshire and Warrington.”

STUDENT SET TO STAR IN DOCUMENTARY CHAMPIONING THE DISABLED COMMUNITY
A twenty-two-year-old Music (Production) student at Cheshire College – South & West has been invited to participate in a documentary which aims to change the public’s perceptions of disability and encourage the music industry to make itself more accessible to disabled people.
Jake Smith, who has Cerebral
Palsy and uses a wheelchair, is one of three disabled young people who will be featured in the documentary. The project’s message of inclusivity resonated with Jake, a talented DJ and producer who has performed his own music in front of thousands of people at the Creamfields and Ibiza Rocks music festivals, even going back-to-back with
famed actor and rapper Idris Elba.
Despite Jake’s impressive achievements and ambitions, he remains mindful of the barriers which many disabled people can face when trying to access big events and careers within the music industry: “ We’re just asking people to have more forethought when it comes to the disabled community. There’s so much more which industry professionals could be doing to make sure they’re really accommodating everyone. ”
When asked how he felt to be appearing in the documentary, Jake commented:
“ Amazing! I hope I can inspire people; I want to share my story with other people with disabilities and let them know that they can achieve anything.”
This is a philosophy which Jake has also brought to his studies at Cheshire College. He is frequently involved with Crewe Campus’s theatrical productions behind-the-scenes, and he credits the College with helping him to develop as a musician and producer.

CHESHIRE COLLEGE SPECIAL OLYMPICS WORLD CHAMPION NOMINATED FOR SPORTS PERSONALITY OF THE YEAR
A Cheshire College – South and West student was nominated for the 2023 Everybody Awards Sports Personality of the Year, following her outstanding achievements at the Special Olympics World Games in Berlin earlier this year.
Over 150 guests attended the exclusive event at Crewe Hall to celebrate some of the most inspiring people in the local area.
One of the nominees was Cheshire College’s Poppy Wood-Wright (pictured right); an 18-year-old Employability and Development Skills student from Crewe, who represented Great Britain at the Special Olympics World Games in Berlin earlier this year. Poppy’s specialism is Rhythmic Gymnastics, and her mastery of hoops, balls, clubs and ribbons earned her three Gold and three Silver medals at the event.
Despite her extraordinary success, Poppy said that her nomination at the Everybody Awards was still a pleasant surprise:
“ When I found out that I had been shortlisted for Sports Personality of the Year, I was shocked and also extremely happy because I worked so hard in the lead up to the World Games and it is nice to know that other people acknowledged how hard I worked in achieving my goal.”

Cheshire College – South & West has been excited to welcome a cohort of Brazilian students to study at its Crewe and Chester Campuses.
The students, who are from the state of Paraíba in Northeastern Brazil, are visiting as part of the College’s International study programme. Over the years, Cheshire College has developed a number of partnerships with schools and other educational establishments around the world, welcoming over 2,000 students and teachers through its doors to date.
Seventeen-year-old, Arthur, said that he was enjoying his classes at the College, especially the more unusual lessons such as Photography:
“ We’re practicing how to take professional photos at the moment, and I’m really enjoying it.”
Arthur, like most of his Brazilian
classmates, has said that this is his first time in the UK.
Students have experienced life at both Crewe and Chester Campuses and have found much to enjoy at both sites. Gabriela shared what she liked to do on the Crewe Campus: “ I have dance and drama lessons at Crewe, and these are my favourite subjects, so I really enjoy going to this Campus.”
Fellow students Adson and Evelin were also complimentary about the College and life both inside and outside of the classroom; with Adson commenting on the quality of the teaching staff, while Evelin said that she enjoyed the free time in between lessons when students can enjoy extracurricular activities and meet other students from the UK.
The students are staying with host
families during their visit; people from the local community who have offered to house the students and help them to learn about British life and culture.
Seventeen-year-old Heitor said that he often goes for days out with his host family and is looking forward to an upcoming trip to Chester Zoo.
International Programmes Manager Glyn Smith said that the students had made a positive impression around College:
“ We have been delighted to host the students from Paraíba; all their lecturers have said what fantastic students they are. We have also been teaching them about life in the UK and helping them with their English, and we’re in awe of the progress they have made.”
