FE COMMISSIONER PAYS SPECIAL VISIT TO CHESHIRE COLLEGE

Cheshire College – South & West was delighted to welcome Further Education Commissioner Shelagh Legrave CBE to its Crewe Campus earlier this week.

Legrave was greeted by Principal and CEO Jasbir Dhesi OBE, Deputy Principal Helen Nellist, and Chair of the Cheshire College Corporation Lesley Davies CBE, who all gave the FE

Commissioner a personalised guided tour of the site.

Among the facilities which Legrave visited on her tour were the spacious Art & Design classrooms, the modern, state-of-the-art gaming rooms for Esports students, and the College’s new £150K training hospital ward which features cutting-edge dental simulation equipment, digital reality programmes, tactile models and life-like mannequins, and specialist teaching staff.

In the hospital ward, Legrave was also shown one of the site’s cuttingedge Anatomage tables; the most technologically advanced 3D anatomy visualisation and virtual dissection tool for anatomy and physiology education, which is used by many of the world’s leading medical institutions.

Legrave’s tour concluded her visit

by meeting members of the College’s Student Senate, who shared details of their individual Senate roles, their reasons for choosing to study at Cheshire College, and their reflections on their student experience.

The Commissioner appeared pleased to learn that students could travel to Campus from further afield via the College’s free transport services, after speaking with a Senate member who travelled in from Shropshire.

After the College shared the news of Legrave’s visit on social media, the Commissioner responded to a tweet on X (formerly Twitter) with the following message:

“ Thank you @CheshireCollSW for hosting me. What a stunning college and supporting a very rural area with high quality provision.”

STUDENTS ‘PULL APART THE MYTH OF FAST FASHION’ AT CHESHIRE COLLEGE

Fashion students at Cheshire College – South & West’s Chester Campus participated in a huge collaborative project to promote sustainability in the fashion industry this month.

Students got involved at every level of creation, organisation and promotion for the event; deciding on the name, logo and tagline for the project (‘Unravelled: Pulling apart the myth of fast fashion’) and creating a themed Instagram account to spread the word about the occasion.

In the run-up to the main event on 20th March, Fashion students undertook an upcycling workshop on Tuesday 19th March, which was held across three classes. Teams of students had to work together to upcycle three garments in less than 3 ½ hours.

The finished products were then exhibited in the Campus’s main foyer where they could be seen and admired by all students, staff and visitors. Chester Campus’s Photography students collaborated with the event organisers, taking high-quality photos of the finished garments and models.

Level 3 Fashion Business & Retail student Scarlett said: “ Putting the outfits together was my favourite part of the whole event! Working behind the scenes, deciding who needs to wear what, and helping to bring it all together was amazing.

“I’m thinking about a career as a fashion buyer and sustainability is a main part of the job, so the ‘Unravelled’ event will be really beneficial for my future.”

7 CHESHIRE COLLEGE CHRONICLE

Chester Campus also played host to sustainability talks by prominent figures in the fashion industry, including a Q&A with the Director of Cheshire Fashion Week (CFW), Claire Namukolo Raven, who shared the various ways that CFW champions sustainability.

Also in attendance was a former Cheshire College Art & Design Lecturer Rachel Davies, who is now working as a freelance artist and makes frequent use of textiles for her work. Rachel demonstrated how to elevate and innovate items without creating the damaging textile waste of the fast fashion cycle.

Level 3 student Alex said of the talks: “ The meetings with Claire and Rachel were so informative; they were giving first-hand advice for our dream lives!

“As the fashion community is forever growing, it is important to be ethical and sustainable when thinking of fashion, as it’s one of the top waste producers. We all need to recognise our contribution and combat the negatives to create change.”

The Campus also hosted a Swap

Shop Clothing Exchange which encouraged students to bring in their unwanted clothing which they could then exchange for a different item

of preloved clothing. All unclaimed clothing at the end of the day was donated to local charity providers, in line with ethical practices.

CHESHIRE COLLEGE STUDENTS BUILD THEIR SKILLS IN CONSTRUCTION COMPETITION

10 APRIL 2024
CHESHIRE COLLEGE
WINNERS
AWARD

Cheshire College – South & West hosted the dynamic Cross College Skills Competition for Construction at its Ellesmere Port Campus this month.

The competition is an annual tradition and a collaborative effort between Cheshire College and three other local Further Education providers; Reaseheath, Warrington & Vale Royal, and Macclesfield. A rotational approach to the competition’s venue means that a different College will host the highly skilled event each year, with 2024 being Cheshire College’s turn, and an opportunity to showcase Ellesmere Port Campus’s pioneering facilities.

Among these was the College’s new £680K Sustainable House; a fully functioning facility fitted with the latest in sustainable technologies. Construction competitors met in the Sustainable House for an introductory briefing, as well as generous hot drinks and pastries provided by Hospitality & Catering students at Ellesmere Port Campus’s prestigious on-site restaurant, Academy West.

Bricklaying, Electrical, Joinery, and Plumbing competitors then moved to the College’s bespoke Construction workshops, where the competitions began in earnest.

After several hours of hard work, concentration and displays of skill, teaching staff from each of the four Colleges worked together to judge the winning entries; a task which they admitted was extremely difficult across all categories due to the consistently high standards set by the students.

Among Cheshire College’s notable victories were Level 3 Plumbing student Jack Whitehead (pictured right above), who won first place in the Plumbing (Senior) division, and Level 3 student Jack Willson (picture right below) who secured second place in Brickwork (Senior).

All competitors won Constructionthemed prizes specific to their area of study, which they can use during their College course or in their future careers.

SPORTS COACHING & DEVELOPMENT STUDENT CHARLIE TELLS ALL AFTER HIS VICTORY AT THE BRITISH GYMNASTICS CHAMPIONSHIPS

12 APRIL 2024

Hot off the heels of an incredible performance at the British Gymnastics Championships, in which he won two silver medals in the Men’s Disability Masters, we caught up with Charlie to talk about overcoming adversity and holding on to a love for sport.

: Hi, Charlie! Firstly, congratulations on your victories at the British Gymnastics Championships. How did it feel to win?

A: It felt really good; and the M&S Bank Arena was a big, exciting space to compete in, so it felt amazing to be there!

: Have you competed at the British Gymnastics Championships before?

A: Yeah, I competed for the first time in around 2018, so just before Covid, and I’ve been back several times since then, and won medals too!

: How did you first get into gymnastics?

A: I had an accident when I was nine years old that put me in a wheelchair. I was at home all the time, and I wasn’t doing much. And my Mum thought randomly to get me into gymnastics, because there’s a specialised disability facility for gymnastics in Crewe. And then they just sort of took me under their wing.

: Did you love gymnastics right away?

A: The first session I went there I was really scared, and I didn’t enjoy it at all! But I went back maybe two or three times and that’s when I fell in love. I was watching all the amazing athletes there who were doing big things for disability gymnastics at the time. And watching them, it felt like a huge thing, and they were idols that I looked up to.

13 CHESHIRE COLLEGE CHRONICLE

: Do you have a favourite piece of equipment?

A: Probably the rings! It’s the most difficult piece of equipment because it’s so precise in terms of strength, power, and balance, but that just makes it more satisfying when you succeed at it.

: Have you got any competitions or events lined up in the near future?

A: There’s another competition this year, to qualify for next year’s British Gymnastics Championships. It’s usually held in October, so I’m hoping to compete in that. But in the meantime, I’ll be upping my difficulty, and the complexity of my training.

: You’re studying Sports Coaching & Development here at Cheshire College. How has this shaped your learning about sport?

A: It’s definitely given me a bigger perspective on how vast the fitness industry is, and I think knowing the science behind sport too has definitely helped with my own sporting endeavours.

: Do you have any plans for your future career?

A: I was thinking about going into gymnastics coaching because it’s something I’m already doing alongside College. I’m currently coaching five- to ten-year-olds, and I’m really enjoying it; it’s just fun to do, and it’s good to be able to share my own experiences to help them.

: Do you have any advice for students looking to compete professionally in sport?

A: I’d probably say: just enjoy it! I’d say that’s the biggest thing. I think some people put too much pressure on themselves to get on a podium and win medals and stuff, but you’ve got to keep your love for the sport. The more you love it, the more you’ll want to do better naturally. Everyone has adversity, setbacks and injuries, but it’s important that we keep going.

Thank you for chatting with us, Charlie! We can’t wait to see what exciting things you get up to next.

THE FAST & THE CURIOUS: ENGINEERING STUDENTS TAKE HAND-MADE RACE CARS

FOR TEST DRIVE

Engineering students at Cheshire College – South & West recently got to enjoy a day out testing, gathering data, and analysing the performances of three green-power cars which have been built and developed at the College.

This valuable learning experience enabled BTEC, T Level, HNC and HND students to work collaboratively with each other and improve each vehicle’s performance.

Once the necessary suggestions had been actioned, students then took the newly modified vehicles for a test drive around the track in a fun, fast-paced consolidation of their learning. Students really embraced the spirit of the day, with Maintenance students even eagerly

making modifications to vehicles during their designated lunch hour!

After assessing the cooling of a 3D printed fan on an electric motor, one HNC student suggested that a further drop in temperature would improve one car’s overall speed. The resulting 8-degree drop saw greater efficiency and improved lap times in the subsequent test-run.

Cheshire College’s Engineering department has already had great success with its hand-made race cars; in 2023 a team of HNC Mechanical and Electrical Engineering students won second place at the Greenpower Formula 24+ race, with their car named ‘Thrust CCSW’.

CHESHIRE COLLEGE ESPORTS & GAMES DEVELOPMENT STUDENTS

RECEIVE F1 RACING SIMULATORS

Esports and Games Development students at Cheshire College – South & West’s Crewe Campus have been delighted to receive a delivery of two F1 racing simulators from the Williams F1 Racing Team, secured through T Level funding. These simulators use the latest, innovative technology to deliver an incredible racing experience, giving students everything they need to compete alongside some of the best simulator racers in the world.

Not only will this latest delivery expand Cheshire College’s state-ofthe-art offering in Esports and Games Development even further, but it will also prepare students for an upcoming trip in which they will compete against nine other Colleges nationally at the Williams Grand Prix factory.

CHESHIRE AND WARRINGTON PROVIDERS COME TOGETHER TO HOST SUCCESSFUL SKILLS FOR THE FUTURE EVENT AT CHESTER ZOO

24 APRIL 2024

Colleges, employers and training providers came together to host an exclusive employer and stakeholder event at Chester Zoo this week.

Cheshire & Warrington: Skills For The Future was an opportunity for local Colleges and providers to share updates pertaining to innovative developments in supporting skills for the future; as well as a chance for guests to network with each other and explore ways to strengthen collaborations between providers. The event was attending by over 70 guests, which included education providers, private training providers and employers from across the region.

BT Digital’s Emerging Talent Programme Manager, Reace Wade, acted as Keynote Speaker for the event. In keeping with the Skills For The Future theme, Wade is responsible for the Digital Graduate, Industrial Placements and Apprenticeship programmes at his organisation, ensuring they meet the current and future needs of the BT Group.

Also headlining the event were Sarah Emes-Young, Project Lead for the Local Skills Improvement Plan (Cheshire & Warrington), and Trevor

Langston, the Pledge Lead for the Cheshire & Warrington Pledge.

After breakfast and networking, guests participated in a collaborative workshop to design and create a roadmap for the skills agenda within the region. The activity inspired spirited discussions within the different groups, leading to informed and creative roadmaps to close the skills gap and improve upon current progress.

Karen Roberts, Assistant Principal for Apprenticeships and Employer Engagement at Cheshire College, said:

“ At Cheshire College, we work continuously to ensure that students have the required skills and knowledge to succeed in their chosen industries.

“ However, we are vigilant to the possibility of future skills shortages in the local area, which is why preemptive planning and collaboration with our fellow education providers and local businesses is so important. We were delighted with the turn-out for the event, and it’s exciting to see so many ideas and plans to support skills needs in Cheshire and Warrington.”

INVESTMENT UPDATE WITH LORNA HEAVEN

CHESHIRE COLLEGE COMMENCES GROUND-BREAKING CONSTRUCTION AT CREWE CAMPUS

Cheshire College – South & West is proud to announce the commencement of construction work at its Crewe Campus, marking the beginning of innovative developments set to transform the educational landscape in the region.

These developments mark a significant milestone for Cheshire College, as it embarks on a groundbreaking journey to enhance its offerings and facilities. Among the key highlights is the construction of a stateof-the-art building for the Cheshire and Warrington Institutes of Technology, solidifying Cheshire College's position as a leading provider in the region.

The developments are part of a dynamic network of partnerships between local universities, employers, and colleges, with Cheshire College spearheading the initiative. With over £15 million in investments allocated,

the Cheshire and Warrington region is poised to benefit from industry-standard facilities and equipment, particularly in sectors such as Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM), where employer demand is at its peak.

Building upon the success of last year's state-of-the-art renovations at the Ellesmere Port Campus, Cheshire College is committed to bringing similar transformative developments to the Crewe Campus. This includes upgrading areas such as Hair & Beauty and Hospitality & Catering, which are vital not only for students but also for members of the public who utilise these facilities.

Investment extends to remodelling the Legal and Business department areas, as well as significant refurbishments in the Creative department, ensuring that every aspect of the College’s educational

offering receives the attention it deserves.

Securing extensive funding underscores Cheshire College’s dedication to providing the best possible learning environment for its students.

Principal and CEO Jasbir Dhesi OBE said that the work reflects the College’s ethos around continued development, growth and innovation:

By undertaking these renovations, we are proving our commitment to our students’ futures by investing in cutting-edge, modern, and pioneering facilities, which will improve their quality of learning even further.”

“This investment program represents the largest initiative at Crewe Campus since its inception, signifying a new era of growth and excellence for Cheshire College – South & West.”

LETTERCHOCS DELIVERY! CHESHIRE COLLEGE STUDENTS GIVE EASTER TREATS TO CREWE RESIDENTS

Students at Cheshire College – South & West’s Crewe Campus have been going door-to-door in the local community, delivering 150 bags of hand-made chocolates to the neighbouring houses.

The Easter-themed goodwill gesture was the idea of Campus Manager Dan Bathgate, who said that continuing positive relations with the community was the driving force behind the activity.

Students at the Campus’s awardwinning Academy Restaurant worked to make the chocolatey treats, and a combination of Student Senate members, Hospitality and Catering students, and other volunteers collaborated to organise the delivery.

Discussing the event, Dan Bathgate said:

Engaging with our local communities is really important us at Cheshire College and we wanted to give something back before we break up for the Easter holidays. Our Hospitality and Catering students worked very hard to create these chocolates and our student volunteers who delivered them were excellent ambassadors for the College.”

The gifts were appreciated by the local community, with one local resident Sophie saying she had discovered the sweet treats whilst getting ready to walk her dog.

“ I opened the door, and there was something on my doorstep. I couldn’t tell what it was at first, but then I looked closer and saw the chocolates! It was such a lovely

surprise. I’m going to share them with my children when they get home from school.”

Principal and CEO Jasbir Dhesi OBE said the chocolatey gifts were a small token of the College’s appreciation for local residents:

“ We can’t underestimate the importance of local communities in helping education providers like

Cheshire College to thrive. Not only do some students live nearby, but we work closely with local businesses, and host events such as our upcoming Community Fun Day.

“ Just as Easter and spring are times of renewal, we wanted to take this opportunity to remind our neighbours of how much we value them.”
