Heroes: Everyday People Making a Difference

Joanna Ruíz Espinosa 3o Secundaria

What is a hero? Society often relates them with a person with a cape and superpowers, but actually there are thousands of “normal” people that have done and are doing great things to improve society so that we can live in a better place. A hero does not only save lives to the point of almost dying, but they also entertain people, protect them (and natural resources like the sea), teach, innovate, create and explore.

Jacques Cousteau was a French explorer who, thanks to his love for the ocean, invented multiple water technologies that raised people's awareness by seeing pollution in films. This is a great example of an everyday hero because the purpose of his actions was to benefit and create a bond between people and the ocean, which is one of the most important resources that humans need in order to survive. In my opinion, Jacques Cousteau was a hero because he was caring, and there are other not so known people that make everyday heroic acts for our planet. In the United States, shootings are very common in places like schools, churches, public places or buildings; however there are amazing and very brave people that risk their lives to save a lot more by trying to take away the gun, protecting others and, if these are hurt, helping them. I think that we should acknowledge their achievements for being such risk-takers, and award them so that even more people can perform heroic actions.

In conclusion, every single person in this world can be a hero if he/ she wishes to become one, but it means risking one’s life and having to sacrifice things like time, money, work, or in the worst case, life itself. Caring for each other is essential for a better world; as a consequence we need to look forward to everyone's security and well-being to become everyday heroes.
