THE PRESIDENT A Letter FROM...

I have been reading the letters of the Marianist foundress Adele de Batz de Tranquelleon and following her beatification in Agen, France that occurred on June 10, 2018. It was intentional that concurrently, we gathered near the Quad to bless and give thanks to God for the commencement of our construction project that will include a new chapel named after Mother Adele. I was mindful of the nearly simultaneous events taking place in both San Antonio and France; I felt grateful and privileged to be part of both the local Central Catholic community and the larger Marianist community. On that day, the collective smiles and fullness of hearts gave praise for God in our lives.

Thank you for being the persons responsible for building an extraordinary faith community and enduring legacy. The bonds of love among us are tremendous and the physical signs of God’s blessings in our lives demonstrated at Central Catholic and in Agen, France help us to live our call to multiply Christians.

The Journey to Mother Adele’s Canonization

 May 12, 2016, after various medical examinations, the Cause passed the Medical Consultation of the Congregation of the Causes of the Saints satisfactorily

 January 19, 2017, the Cause received the favorable vote of the Congress of Theologians, which means that the healing of Sister Michela meets all the conditions of a miracle: very serious terminal disease, invocation of Mother Adele, rapid recovery, complete and lasting.

 May 4, 2017, our Holy Father, Francis, signed the Decree of Beatification for Mother Adele de Batz de Trenquelléon, having received the favorable judgment of the Cardinals and Bishops who are members of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, rendered in their meeting of May

2. The Cardinal Prefect, His Eminence Angelo Amato, presented the favorable vote to the Pope and the Holy Father signed the Decree regarding the “miracle, attributed to the intercession of the Venerable Servant of God Mary of the Immaculate Conception (neé: Adelaide de Batz de Trenquelléon), founder of the Daughters of Mary Immaculate; born 10 June 1789 and died 10 January 1828.”

 June 10, 2018, Mother Adele was beatified in Agen, France. This canonical process should be an occasion to intensify the prayer of the Marianist Family around our Foundress and to understand this miracle as a sign of the grace and love of God and of the Immaculate Virgin Mary.

Please pray for our newest alumni who recently graduated, support them throughout their college years and seek to hire them when they are available.

Paul Garro, President

Welcome to Our New Principal

We would like to introduce you to a new school leader, who will work enthusiastically to enrich and expand the great academic tradition of our school.

Beginning July 1, 2018, Mr. Stephen Walswick will be the new principal of Central Catholic High School. Mr. Walswick has been a transformational leader in his roles as a teacher and assistant principal. He brings more than 12 years of experience in all-boys Catholic education most recently serving as Assistant Principal of Curriculum and Educational Technology at Servite High School in Anaheim, California. Under his guidance, Central Catholic will continue its rich Catholic Marianist tradition of excellence, both in and outside of the classroom.

Mr. Walswick and his wife Lacey have been married for eight years and are the proud parents of four young children. He and his family are active members of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Placentia, California. Mr. Walswick has served on the Baptismal Team, Stewardship Council, is a Parish Lector, a Minister of Holy Communion, and is a member of the Knights of Columbus. He holds a Master of Arts Degree in Catholic School Administration from Loyola Marymount University, a Master of Arts Degree in Teaching: Secondary Education from Chapman University, and two Bachelor’s Degrees in English Literature and Philosophy (Honors) from Loyola Marymount University. In addition to the LMU School of Education Outstanding Graduate for Catholic School Administration program, Mr. Walswick was named the 2018 Loyola Marymount University School of Education Graduate Student of the Year.

The Walswicks arrived to San Antonio on Friday, June 22 and were greeted by Central Catholic community members who helped them unload the moving truck and get their new home set up. A few members from the Wild Game Dinner committee even brought over some BBQ for them! Together, as a faith-filled Marianist community, we will continue to provide the young men of San Antonio the best opportunity for reaching their full potential.

Please help us welcome The Walswick family to Central Catholic!

Matthew will attend the University of Texas at Austin where he will study Computer Science so that he can one day create a tech startup company. Matthew says Central Catholic has prepared him in his studies saying, “Being surrounded by intelligent peers and teachers at Central Catholic has taught me how to effectively study. I was able to grow as a student and foster better time-management skills as a result of the motivation from Central’s great teachers. The JROTC program has also helped me grow as an individual and learn the importance of the LDRSHIP values (Loyalty, Duty, Respect, Selfless Service, Honor, Integrity, and Personal Courage). The important life lessons I have learned from my instructors will serve as the foundational outlooks on life as I enter the “real world."’

Richard was a very active cadet in the JROTC Program at Central Catholic, in fact he was a member of the JROTC PT Team, JROTC Color Guard, JROTC Drill Team, and JROTC JLAB Team during his four years at CCHS. He was also involved with the Academic Team, National Honors Society, and Spanish Club. In the Fall of 2018, Richard will attend the University of Texas at Austin where he plans to study Architectural Engineering, potentially pursuing a dual degree in that with Architecture. His ideal job would be to work for either an Architectural Engineer or Architect major firm, like Gensler. Richard give many thanks to the teachers and academics at CCHS saying, “Many of the AP Classes I’ve taken have allowed me to jump ahead in my studies and gain needed college hours to bypass my entry level classes and get straight to my architectural studies.”

NEW ALUMNI

After years of dedication to his studies and extra-curricular, Rob will attend Stanford University in California. My most influential position by far is my responsibility as the pole vault team captain. The pole vault team is a small squad of only about four or five guys at a time so we all became very close and I love each and every one of my teammates. I have been with them when they were having bad days and when they have amazing days, as they have been there for me in my days. We are a Family, and it was everyone’s responsibility to keep tabs on the others on and off the field. Through my own responsibilities to the team as its captain and my teammates as their brother, I think my attending Central Catholic as a whole has allowed me to see the fruits of true dedication, day in and day out.

Former NFL Players Join Football Coaching Staff

Central Catholic High School is happy to welcome Louis Vasquez to the athletic staff!

Vasquez, attended Corsicana High School in Corsicana, Texas, a rural town near Dallas. He attended Texas Tech University where he received numerous awards and honors in football including: 2007 All-Big 12 honorable mention, Big 12 second-team, 2008 Rivals.com second team All-American, and 2008 Associated Press third team All-American.

He was drafted into the NFL in the 3rd round (78th overall) in 2009 by the San Diego Chargers, whom he played with until 2012. During his time with the Chargers, Vasquez became the sole rookie in the starting lineup after competing for the right guard starting position with 9-year veteran, Kynan Forney. Vasquez won the spot and stayed there throughout his tenure with the Chargers. He was the only rookie on the Chargers to be apart of the All-Rookie team that year.

In 2013, Vasquez signed a four-year contract with the Denver Broncos. He was selected to be in the 2014 Pro Bowl after not allowing a single sack in 2013. He could not play due to the Broncos appearance in Super Bowl XLVIII. On February 7, 2016, Vasquez was part of the Broncos team that won Super Bowl L (50). In the game, the Broncos defeated the Carolina Panthers by a score of 24–10. Vasquez retired from the NFL in 2016 after three seasons with the Denver Broncos. Get to know him more below!

What were your main motivations for becoming an athlete?

Growing up with little to no money, times were hard and football was an outlet for me. I also grew up watching the Dallas Cowboys and always wanted to be a professional football player but as a young Hispanic kid from a small town with no money, I never thought that would be achievable. My Grandfather was one of my biggest heroes, but athletes I looked up to were, Anthony Munoz and Larry Allen.

What do you most enjoy about athletics?

I enjoy the structure, the commitment, and the discipline it takes to be the best at what you do. It also teaches and molds young men and young women into strong leaders and model citizens.

What have been your most meaningful personal and professional achievements?

My most meaningful personal achievement was becoming a husband and father.

My most meaningful professional achievement was my grandfather seeing me become an All-pro, and winning the Super Bowl all while carrying his name (which is whom I am named after).

What advice do you have for our current students and alumni, who need bit of encouragement to pursue their career goals/dreams?

There’s no substitute for hard work. When you’re having a bad day, keep your head down and work. When you’re having a good day, keep your head down and work. Control what you can control and everything else will work itself out. Remember the fight is your friend!

OFFENSIVE LINEMAN COACH

WELCOME

Central Catholic High School is excited to welcome Larry Moore to the Button Football staff this school year!

A native of San Diego, Calif., Moore began his football career at Monte Vista High School in Spring Valley, California. He attended Grossmont Junior College where he was a standout on the football field and in the classroom. He earned All-American honors in 1994 as well as Scholar-Athlete of the Year honors. He was also named the Grossmont College Athlete of the Year.

After his second year at Grossmont, Moore turned down offers to Arkansas, Mississippi and others, and decided on BYU. He earned All-WAC both years he played at BYU as well as earning a spot on the Lavelle Edwards Dream Team in 2000. He graduated with a degree in business management.

Moore entered the NFL as an undrafted rookie free agent with the Seattle Seahawks in 1997. He made his first NFL roster with the Indianapolis Colts (#50) the following year when franchise quarterback Peyton Manning arrived as a rookie. While in Indianapolis, Moore earned the title of team captain. In 1999 Moore was part of the biggest single season turnaround in NFL history with the Colts finishing 13-3 and winning the AFC East. He wound up starting 73 of 96 NFL regular-season games he played in, a true testament to his work ethic and desire to be great at what he did.

He signed with the Washington Redskins as a free agent in 2002, again earning the team captain title. From the Redskins, Moore made his way to the Cincinnati Bengals for two years in 2004 and 2005 where he would end up retiring from the NFL.

After his NFL career, he jumped into the coaching ranks at Bridgewater College as the tight ends coach. Following a year at Bridgewater he returned to the NFL and began internships with Cincinnati and Indianapolis. He assisted with the offensive line of the Bengals in 2009 and with the Colts in 2010.

Moore has a daughter, Isabella.

DEFENSIVE LINEMAN COACH

The Rivalry between Central Catholic and Holy Cross football teams was a staple in the San Antonio community since 1963. Following the 2013 season, neither school could find a mutually agreeable playing date, ending the long seated tradition of “The Holy Bowl.” That was until this upcoming season. We are happy to announce that Central Catholic will play Holy Cross on Saturday, September 8@ 7:00 p.m. at Alamo Stadium.

There is no doubt that both school communities, students and alumni have been waiting for this game again! In the last game, Holy Cross was victorious, but Central Catholic still holds the winning record against the Knights with 35 wins and only 11 losses. According to records, The Holy Bowl, Central Catholic vs Holy Cross is the second-oldest rivalry in the city. A rivalry between two Catholic High Schools deeply rooted and committed to Catholic Education in the city of San Antonio. “I am a huge fan of healthy rivalries,” shared Mr. Ybarra ’83, Vice President of Student Development. “A rivalry that shows mutual respect on and off the field. That’s the way it should be.” Anyone who has experienced this game as a player or as a spectator would agree that there is something special when each school lines up against each other. Both teams display a sense of pride in every snap, in every play, and in every second of the game. Win or lose, this experience is special for both of our schools and the San Antonio Catholic community.

In the weeks leading up to kickoff, both teams will come together to serve our greater San Antonio community through service. Our Athletic Director, Hector Rodriguez, believes service together will show true sportsmanship, “It is our goal as schools and communities that we emphasize playing the game in the true role of ‘sportsmanship’ no matter what the outcome.” This will allow people to see that this game is much more than a football game, but a bonding experience for players and coaches. As Coach Santiago explains, “A well-played contest can create a bonding experience among the players and fans.” Just as practice prepares players for the challenges of a game, community service develops young men to encounter and work together to change the issues facing today’s society. With both schools being dedicated to Our Mother Mary, we hope to model Mary’s discipleship through our service together.

Additional plans are being developed between Holy Cross and Central Catholic to discuss what other ways the schools can come together during this exciting time. A prayer service and maybe even a pregame meal among administrators are just some of the exciting possibilities each school is considering! Coach Santiago encourages everyone to come participate in The Holy Bowl this September, “Everyone involved in the Holy Bowl will have the opportunity to represent the Catholic Community of San Antonio in an exciting and fun filled environment.”

A Note from the Outgoing Alumni Association Board

President, Jason Longoria ’96

It has been a tremendous honor and privilege to serve as the President of the Alumni Association for the past two years. I would like to thank all the Alumni Board Directors that gave so much of their time, talent, and treasure. Together, we have accomplished so much and given many hours of service back to our Central Catholic. In addition, during my term as President, the Alumni Association has donated more than $130,000 to the School for to meet various needs, including:

 More than $44,000 toward scholarships for deserving students

 Nearly $20,000 for SAT/ACT/PSAT/AP Test Prep coursework for the entire student body

 $42,000 for new Button Band uniforms

 And $35,000 toward our 5-year $250,000 pledge to help build the Central Catholic Convocation Center and Mother Adele Chapel.

I am also thrilled to announce that Mr. Alex Ojeda ’96 was elected to serve as the Alumni Board President for 2018-2020. He and his team have amazing plans to grow the Association and its visibility to the larger San Antonio community. Please keep Alex and the rest of the Alumni Board of Directors in your prayers as they work to continue the mission of Central Catholic and the Alumni Association!

With a loyal heart, Jason Longoria ‘96

REUNIONS & CLASS NOTES

On June 8, 2018 Central Catholic High School held a Blessing and Commencement Ceremony for the new Convocation Center! This special day fell just two days before the June 10th Beatification of Blessed Mother Adele, of whom the new chapel is named for. The highly anticipated groundbreaking event was attended by more than 200 alumni, current students, faculty, staff, family members and members of the San Antonio community.

This $12 million project will include a new regulation sized basketball court, practice courts, a weight room, locker rooms for every varsity sport, and the Mother Adele Chapel & Reflection Garden! This project is part of a master plan that began 40 years ago, in fact, most of our Marianist Brothers have mentioned that they themselves have been waiting for this day for many years.

We would like to thank the Capital Campaign committee, led by Mr. Bob Elizondo ’62, for their tireless efforts over the past few years and for always keeping the Marianist faith at the center of their work.

With a little over $3 million dollars to go, there’s still time to get involved! All donations will go directly toward the new Convocation Center and building an endowment for expenses of the new facility. Gifts of all sizes are appreciated and will help Central Catholic continue our mission.

The Central Catholic Convocation Center is scheduled to open its doors in the summer of 2019.

Watch the Sports2Nite coverage of the groundbreaking HERE.

15 GROUNDBREAKING BLESSING

We have raised $9.9 Million of our $12 million goal!

With the support from all of our alumni & friends like you, together, we can meet our goal!

If each alumni gives $$, we will reach our goal and begin to build an endowment for the Convocation Center.

Your contribution will help us leave a legacy for future generations of Central Catholic students and will help us honor our Marianist foundations and clergy. Our time is NOW.

We are humbled by the many families who have considered and said “yes” to Central Catholic for the 2018-2019 school year. We want to thank all of our families – returning and new – for entrusting Central Catholic with your sons' education. It is because of our families that Central Catholic remains a prestigious landmark in San Antonio and a symbol throughout South Texas of teaching excellence.

Over the last few years Central Catholic has experienced positive enrollment growth and this year is no exception. It is exciting to share that we will have 160+ incoming freshmen in our Class of 2022! These young men are coming to Central Catholic from over 40 different middle schools, and they are ready to bring their intellect and talents to a remarkable brotherhood. In addition to our freshmen, we will have transfer students and international students joining us in the upcoming school year. We are happy to be welcoming these students and their families into our community!

Whether you are an alumnus, parent, or friend of Central Catholic, there are many ways you can help us continue our enrollment success. Central Catholic is still accepting admissions applications for 2018-2019 and soon will begin the admissions events for the Class of 2023! If you know of any families who could benefit from joining the Central Catholic family, please give their contact information to Bethany Herman, Director of Enrollment. Thank you for your constant support!

Central Catholic has had the unique opportunity to pilot an International Student Program. This program adds diversity to the student population and aligns with the Marianist charism. We are people of community joined together in service to others. What better way to provide service than to welcome a visiting student into your home! In anticipation for future international students, there is a request for potential host families. A host family has the responsibility of providing a student with a safe, supportive and loving home for an academic year.

As a student joins your family, he would be encouraged to participate in all aspects of family life. This personal learning experience fosters the exchange of ideas and provides a student with exposure to the cultural and social environment of the home. A host family is compensated to cover day-to-day food expenses and accommodation expenses. If your family is interested in being a host family, please contact Bethany Herman, Director of Enrollment, for more information.

“What separates the CCHS Wild Game Dinner from other wild game dinners in the city is that we hunt and kill the wild game ourselves; we cook it ourselves; and we serve it ourselves in keeping with the Marianist tradition of service and leadership. The mission of our committee ‘A Nobis…Ad Nos….Pro Nobis’ which means ‘from us; to us; for us,’” says WGD Chairman Stephen Ayala, ’76. “I sincerely thank the dedicated committee of 16+ alumni who work tirelessly to put on this first-class event.”

The WGD committee has pledged $250,000 towards the Convocation Center; remaining proceeds will go towards financial assistance for graduating Seniors; immediate school needs; and academic programs. The first two dinners raised more than $170,000.

“… We thank you, Lord, for allowing us to share in the life, joys, and sufferings of our dear friends. May their life and death deepen our bonds of faith, hope, and charity. May our prayers help bring them and all of our deceased family members ‘into the light of your face.’ We ask you, Lord, to bring comfort and courage to their family and friends. May your Mother, Mary, pray for all of us ‘now and at the hour of our death.’”

MISSION OF CENTRAL CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL

Central Catholic High School is a college preparatory school educating young men, from diverse backgrounds, in the Marianist tradition for success through the development of scholarship, leadership and moral character.

Thank You to our Volunteers

In May, we gathered to recognize our fantastic volunteers who make each school year a success! At the celebration, Mr. Garro recounted a story, “I had a chance to have dinner with President Bush and his wife Barbara. During our conversation we agreed on the tremendous role volunteers play in our society. Mrs. Bush said to remember that the Titanic was built by professionals, the Ark was built by volunteers.”

To all of our volunteers, thank you for helping us build a faith filled vessel.
