Greetings students! It is my most distinct honour to welcome you to The University of the West Indies, Cave Hill Campus for the 2018-2019 academic year.

As you may know, this calendar year, The University is celebrating 70 years of existence making indelible contributions to the well-being of Caribbean societies. I implore you to enjoy the festivities planned to mark this major milestone in the life of our University.

Our Campus has been accredited by the Barbados Accreditation Council (BAC) and is currently undergoing the reaccreditation process. Furthermore, the Cave Hill Campus boasts a fully-accredited Faculty of Medical Sciences which has earned double accreditation: Caribbean Accreditation Authority for Education in Medicine and other Health Professions (CAAM-HP) and the National Committee on Foreign Medical Education and Accreditation (NCFMEA), US Department of Education. Cave Hill is also the home of the oldest Faculty of Law in the history of The UWI and our Law Faculty is equipped with a world-class law library. The Campus’ state-of-the-art students’ gym is located at the Usain Bolt Sport Complex and is awaiting your use and that of other students. The University’s newest Faculty, the Faculty of Sport offers a suite of academic, sports and co-curricular courses for all students who are athletically-inclined and/or desirous of becoming a well-rounded individual. The Faculty also offers various academic programmes in the sporting disciplines as well as other cross-disciplinary courses and degrees with other faculties/departments.

Our Campus is very receptive to the needs of our student body and my Administration focuses on creating the best learning and leisure environment our resources can afford. Please get to know the entire Campus.

Both the Guild of Students and your Faculty have prepared a diverse calendar of activities for students and you are welcomed to participate in these activities but I do expect you to take your studies seriously and complete your degree programme at the top of your class. Amidst all the parties and limes, bear in mind your ultimate goal, to be another light rising from the West!

Indeed, I am happy to welcome you to your Campus and I am doubly delighted that you chose to pursue your studies at Cave Hill. Do enjoy the next three years and I wish you continued success in all your future endeavors.

Welcome Freshers!

The Department of Halls of Residence is responsible for meeting the needs of students living in one of our many University listed off campus accommodations, or on one of our three Halls of Residence located on Campus.

Myself and my dynamic team wish to welcome you as you embark along your journey at the Cave Hill Campus. Our goal is to provide students with an environment that is safe, clean, convenient and supportive, a home away from home.

At Cave Hill we view our student housing as much more than accommodations and our team is here to assist in making your stay a memorable one.

Over the years our past students have told us about the many lifelong friendships they made living on Halls and the impact that our staff had on their lives. We strive to create a positive experience that everyone can enjoy and by living with us you choose to become part of an inclusive community. We do our best by working closely with our Resident Assistants and student leaders on each Hall to encourage students to assist us in shaping our communities so that our residences can have a great experience.

ACCOMODATION

We have a dedicated officer located at Sir Philip Sherlock Hall who deals with all off campus properties to ensure that our landlords meet the Universities criteria of the student’s needs. Our lists of landlords are carefully vetted before they are listed on our website and we encourage students to use this search method when seeking off campus housing. We pride ourselves on maintaining a trusted relationship with our landlords as we consider them also a part of the university family.

Our offices are located on the Frank Worrell Hall on campus and open from 9am to 4pm Monday to Friday and Saturdays 10am to 2pm. We accept applications for on campus throughout the year and we also encourage short term visitors once space is available. Please feel free to drop in or ask any questions of us.

I wish you well and success in your upcoming year.

FRANK WORRELL HALL

Welcome Freshers, let me congratulate and thank you for choosing the most illustrious Sir Frank Worrell Hall of residence for your home away from home. Leaving home is not an easy task for anyone to do on their own and so I would just like to reassure you that making this choice is one you will not regret. Life on halls opens you to new cultures, a diversity of people and experiences that will last a lifetime.

As you meet fellow Worrellites, I urge that you be open minded, living with eighteen other people does seem to overwhelm many of us. Enrich yourself in the diverse cultures, make

friends with people from all over the globe; you will meet people from Belize, Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago to even people from Denmark, England and many other places. Indulge in one of the greatest cultural experiences of your lifetime, one that allows you to cross boarders without taking an actual aero plane and appreciate what everyone has to offer. Participate in campus and hall activities. It is through these same activities you get to meet friends that last a life time; you will meet your future colleagues, future doctors, lawyers, teachers and the list continues. It is through this participation that you will appreciate the halls culture and

campus culture and learn the true essence of unity. Build comradery amongst your peers, and I assure you that this will make the experience a grand one!

Our motto, “No You, No Me, but WE!” Is one to be remembered on halls! We are one family, we are one Worrell. Maroon and Gold! Once again, welcome to your home away from home! Live and enjoy the experience! Together we achieve, together we succeed!

POSTGRADUATE STUDENTS

The Cave Hill Association of Postgraduate Students (CHAPS)

The Cave Hill Association of Postgraduate Students (CHAPS) is the representative body for all postgraduate students at The University of the West Indies, Cave Hill Campus. CHAPS endeavours to serve its members who are part-time and full-time students in taught masters, research masters (MPhil) and Ph.D programmes. Our initiatives are tailored to provide students with comprehensive support in the completion of their studies, as well as providing avenues which aid in nurturing socially aware, responsible and constructive regional and global citizens.

To this end, CHAPS has consistently worked to be a pillar of support for its members, through financial aid and other means. This includes maintaining the Organisation’s welfare support and increase opportunities to bolster the completion of postgraduate

study, through educational forums, and access to practical experience. Recently, in order to provide further support to our members who study in a variety of diverse disciplines, CHAPS was pleased to welcome representatives from the

Faculty of Law and Medicine in the 2017/2018 academic year. These Faculties went unrepresented on the CHAPS Executive for several years and their addition was a welcome addition to the Executive as the Organisation continues to

strive to ensure that all students reading for a post-graduate programme are represented. Under the new Executive, Faculty Representatives will be charged with the responsibility of being liaisons who foster stronger bonds and better communication between the CHAPS Executive and its members.

Another key area of emphasis under this current CHAPS Executive is to take the civic duty to the Barbadian and wider regional community seriously. To this end, CHAPS’ voluntary work with local organizations and within neighbouring Caribbean islands remain an important pillar of the Organisation’s mandate. In the past CHAPS partnered with the Barbados Vagrants and Homeless Society, and on the regional front, the Organization of the Eastern Caribbean (OECS) Educational Outreach is a

flagship CHAPS initiative rooted in the need for advocating for the pursuit of higher learning among OECS member states. Another aspect of post-graduate life in which CHAPS attempts to offer vibrancy and diversity are the activities which are planned for our members during the course of the academic year. We believe that food, fellowship, discourse and critical thinking are fundamental ingredients for a balanced experience at UWI Cave Hill. Examples of activities which have been hosted under the aegis of CHAPS include workshops on thesis development, mix and mingle events and athletic events and CHAPS was also elated to host the 2017 Inter-Campus Postgraduate debates which feature the best of CHAPS and our sister Campuses of Mona, St. Augustine and Open Campus.

This year’s debates were a rich and informative forum of exchange on regional and international issues.

CHAPS like other student clubs and associations on Campus is privileged to host its own week of activities. The 2018-2019 CHAPS week of activities is scheduled to take place from the 21st28th October 2018. Further details on this all-inclusive week of events can be obtained in the near future from CHAPS’ various social media platforms.

We encourage our members, the wider student body, administration, staff at Cave Hill and all well-wishers to stay connected with us! Follow us or connect with us today via:

GETTING AROUND

OUR SHUTTLE

COST: FREE!

BEST USE: Getting to Campus or to popular landmarks around Barbados

TIPS:

• Get to the shuttle stop early to ensure you get a good seat

• Always have your ID

NOTES: Shuttle routes include Warrens Circle, Bridgetown route & the NCF route.

ZR’S

COST: $2 trips to everywhere

RUN TIME: 6:30AM – 11PM (latest)

BEST USE: Short trips

NOTES: ZR’s, pronounced ZedArs, are very small buses, usually packed but they do provide fast transport to most places you need to go. E.g warrens, bridgetown

TIPS:

• If two Zr’s pull up always get the one behind, people rush for the first one and the one at the back will thus be emptier.

• Learn the route numbers or

ask the conductor (found online at the Barbados Public Transportation website)

• Window seats are best, they’ll help you feel cool in the usually packed bus.

• ZR’s are best used during the day, if you have to take them at night try to be in a big group

YELLOW & BLUE BUSSES

COST: $2

RUN TIME: 6:30 AM – 11:30 PM

BEST USE: Longer trips and adventures around the island.

TIPS: you may have to stand on trips where the buses are FULL! Always have your money at hand!

TAXIS:

COST: $20 - $60 (single drop) $6$12 (per person in groups)

RUN TIME: 24/7

BEST USE: Night trips, appointments, heavy loads, group trips

TIPS:

• Scout around to find cheaper

taxi alternatives at first but try to build a relationship with one driver that works for you. If you are on good terms with a particular taxi man they are more likely to shift schedules to accommodate you, help you with heavy loads and maybe even provide discounts!

• Ask older students to recommend their favourite drivers. The taxi’s students use frequently are usually the most affordable and safe.

• Taxis are at their most affordable when used in groups. So, if you need to use a taxi ask around to see if anyone else needs to go to the same destination. Then you can split the cost with them and you both save money!

NOTES: Taxis are hassle free, but they are the most expensive mode of transportation. They are the most secure and dependable. If you need to get somewhere on time, transport heavy loads like large groceries or heading somewhere with lots of friends it’s the easiest and best option!

BRIEF HISTORY: Leaning on it’s English, African and West Indian roots, Barbados has managed to create its own rich and vibrant culture establishing an authentic Bajan identity. Barbados was settled in 1624 by the English, and Britain’s influence continued for centuries to follow. Mia Amor Mottley) this year in their most recent general elections. The land of flying fish, cou cou, bashment soca, Crop Over and pristine beaches - Barbados, your home away from away home is any students’ dream, as it is home to unique festivals, crazy cuisine, an unbeatable party scene and the list goes on!

CAPITAL: Bridgetown, is the capital of Barbados. It houses several attractions like local markets, several shops and boutiques and the House of Parliament!
