Small climbers for trellis and arches...

As the weather gets cooler and the days shorter now is a good time to think about planting shrubs, climbers and trees. These plants really appreciate being planted when the soil is moist and cool and they can concentrate on developing their roots rather than producing leaves and flowers. You can also get a bargain in the winter by buying ‘bare-root’ woody plants (those without containers) from November to February says Gardening expert Sue Jeffries of sjgardenadvice.co.uk.

Many climbers can take over a small trellis or arch within a few years; here are some suggestions for small climbers that grow slowly, are naturally small or can be easily cut to size.

Ceanothus thyrsiflorus 'Skylark' – grows to 1.5m (5’), evergreen, blue flowers in May/June, needs sun and protection from wind.

Chaenomeles speciosa 'Geisha Girl' – grows to 1.5m (5’), pale pink flowers March to May and yellow /green fruits in the autumn, prefers sun but fully hardy in cold areas.

Clematis florida var. florida sieboldiana – grows to 2.5m (8’ 4”) with showy cream and purple flowers from May to August.

Lathyrus latifolius 'White Pearl' – grows to 2m (6’8”) with pure white flowers from June to September. This is the perennial or everlasting pea with beautiful flowers, but no scent.

Last, but not least are annual Sweet Peas. These need to be grown from seed each year, but will reward your efforts with scent and copious, colourful flowers that can be used indoors as cut flowers. Sow the seeds in pots now to get early flowers next year.

Clematis 'Arabella' – grows to 1.8m (6’) with deep mauve/blue flowers in July – September likes sun or partial shade. Prune back to 20cm (8”) above the

An old man finally gets the sports car of his dreams and decides to go for a drive and see what his new car can do.
