I’m not sure if you noticed, but I am starting to see a refreshing surge in activities coming our way in Singapore. A couple of weeks ago many of us enjoyed the Singapore Night Festival 2022 which was put on hold for 2 years. K-pop fans will be looking forward to the all-girl group, (G)I-dle, coming in October. And of course, the Formula 1 Singapore Airlines Singapore Grand Prix is coming at the end of September. I think many of you may have travelled, or will be planning to travel in the months ahead. These are positive times ahead as Singapore and the rest of the world are cautiously but surely emerging from 2 years of difficult times. In line with this turn around, job opportunities are quickly opening up and employers are frantically trying to hire new talent to ride the anticipated growth in the economy.
At the Learner Advisory & Career Centre, we have been busy ramping up our programmes to help you prepare yourselves to snatch your dream jobs out there. In this issue, we highlight just a couple of our recent events such our Future of Work Series - Onboarding Wealth Management and Onboarding Analyst Roles, and the networking sessions with UOB Bank and KPMG. We also want to highlight the upcoming IGNITE Career & Internship Fair that is coming real soon in October. There will be many employers with ready jobs and internship opportunities so do look out for our announcements, and do sign up and prepare to meet these employers! Besides these, do also look out for our Career Connect Roadshow, Career Forums, etc.
Before I sign off, I would also like to draw your attention to our very own SIM Jobs and Internship Portal called UNICORN. We have listed more than a thousand jobs and internship openings there and we would encourage everyone to check it out - and we are sure you will find something for everyone there! “After 2 years of remote study due to the pandemic, it was a thrilling experience for a final year student like me to finally engage with fellow friends and network with managers in the networking sessions I have attended. Attending the sessions brought me new insights of working life from those who had hands-on experience. On top of that, I got the chance to get interviewed on site in one to one and group format.
I highly recommend all SIM students, especially final year students, to join such networking sessions as this will increase your chances in getting hired and have a better idea of the company’s culture.”

Hear from Donovan Fan who has managed to clinch an offer with UOB through this programme!
“This programme kickstarted my drive to improve my career prospects. I decided to join this programme to meet new people and to create an opportunity for myself and I was also curious about the career opportunities available at UOB.
My biggest takeaway from the programme is learning about how to ‘market’ oneself to potential employers and the importance of networking. The skills and knowledge I picked up during the programme eventually helped me to obtain a job offer from UOB!
I would definitely recommend this programme to students from all academic backgrounds. Even without the relevant background in finance, I was able to learn more about the finance industry and relevant skills that can assist me in future interviews and networking events.”
Donovan Fan BSc Economics & Politics, SIM University of London Onboarding Wealth Management Roles withThrough this intensive programme, participants learned how to make sense of economic and business news, as well as utilize the knowledge learned in a simulated work experience with supervision from the trainers. Participants also had the opportunity to prepare and pitch their economic report, as well as performing morning briefs on the economy and financial markets, bolstering their confidence in presentation skills.
On 24 August, the participants visited the J.P. Morgan office, where they learnt more about the recruiting process and opportunities available. They also had the chance to network with SIM alumni and the campus recruiters Our very own SIM alumni, Raphael Ng and Chee Guan Jia, shared their personal experiences of working in J.P. Morgan and how they benefited from the collaborative and welcoming company culture. Participants also had their queries answered during the networking session, as well as to seek advice on how to better present themselves and ace the interview.
“I am highly interested in analytical work and wanted to pursue it as a career. As I was about to graduate from SIM, I joined the programme to explore what professional choices I could consider.
The programme taught me critical skills in analysis and to think from multiple perspectives to gain a comprehensive understanding of the subject matter. These are some skills that are not taught in school. The deliverables that are required were my biggest takeaway as these reports allowed me to apply what I learned in the course to an actual company. This gave me the confidence in job interviews as I was equipped with the reports I had written as well as the knowledge obtained from the rigorous course.
I encourage students who are interested in analytical work to join the programme. Not only will this help you better understand what you are studying, it also allows you to see how this knowledge is put into action in the business world. I encourage students from other disciplines to join as well because university is a time when you are free to attempt new things and also a safe environment to fail.”

Throughout the career fair, I learned more about various firms in different industries. The speakers exposed me to their job scope, work culture, what they have learned from their experience in the company, and job openings they are offering.
By Sara, Eugene & KelynI would advise students to prepare a few questions to ask the employers because they're extremely approachable!
