Talk about life’s unexpected twists and turns, eh?

Taking the reins of Cardiff’s sole luxury lifestyle magazine may have come as a surprise to some, but the thought of infusing Cardiff Life with fresh energy and ensuring its legacy thrived, was an opportunity we couldn’t ignore.

The journey to revamp the magazine hasn’t been a walk in the park, but our unwavering commitment to sharing the best that Cardiff, and the surrounding areas, have to offer made it possible. The vibrant new Cardiff Life team was steadfast in our goal to forge a harmonious link between the digital and print worlds, all while preserving the trust of our fantastic readership.

This magazine is for all of us. To the businesses, communities, individuals, and contributors whose stories grace these pages; this is your platform. It’s our collective tribute to Cardiff, a place for us to share our victories and challenges, seek support, celebrate achievements, and shed light on the strength of our community. It’s proof of how laughter and unity can bind us all together.

Being Welsh is a badge of honour, something to be celebrated and shared. That’s exactly how we feel about this new chapter in Cardiff Life’s story, and we’ll fly the flag by sharing more content bilingually.

From cover to cover, you’ll find cornerstone content that has always made Cardiff Life special, glimpses of your favourite city spots, and even some delightful new discoveries. There’s truly something for everyone. As it should be, Cardiff Life is crafted by the people of Cardiff, for the people of Cardiff.

We’ll share stunning visuals showcasing the beauty of our home and stories about the real people and businesses of this great city. I think you’ll agree with me when I say it’s 'proper lush’.

I want to take a moment to extend a special thanks to my team. For the late nights, the early mornings, your unwavering trust, and unyielding loyalty. Without you, Cardiff would have lost a gem. Thank you for embarking on this journey with me, understanding the value this publication holds for the city, and dedicating yourselves to doing a bloody good job. I owe you all many cold ones. From sun kissed street food to carefree cocktails, these radiant establishments offer an abundance of delights, serving as the ultimate havens for sun-seeking enthusiasts.

TAKE A LOOK AT CARDIFF BAY S NEW HOT SPOT

AL FRESCO a yard of flavours '

Al fresco dining often conjures up images of European holidays, where streets are adorned with charming tables and chairs, and people revel in dining late into the night. This trend has also taken hold here in the UK, with outdoor dining gaining immense popularity. We had the pleasure of chatting with Nick Saunders, the owner of DEPOT, who has put his unique spin on al fresco dining right in the heart of Cardiff Bay.

After spending years trying to secure the plot to bring his mission of infusing the Bay with more individuality and independents, Nick has created an environment that brings new energy to Cardiff Bay.

“Our vision is to create a cornerstone for independent hospitality at Cardiff Bay, making an impact not only with the scale of the venue but the aesthetic of the venue”. The venue’s personality is bright, vibrant, and exciting using 22 rainbow-coloured shipping containers which can host up to 1,000 diners, creating an environment “where people can lose themselves for a few hours”.

Tiger Yard offers a variety of different foods to cater for all tastes. This month the mouth-watering resident traders are Dirty Bird, Meating Point, Terry’s Tacos, Fire & Flank, Rock & Scallop, with guest trader Vegan Filth, among others this month. Since opening, the colourful shipping containers have been inundated with visitors wanting to experience what Tiger Yard and its traders have to offer. “Some pop in for a quick bite and a pint, and others stay from the afternoon to the evening.”

Tiger Yard places huge importance on working with local and independent businesses. Nick’s other business ventures also work with plenty of these traders.

“We have worked with plenty of these traders before and will continue to do so. The Bay has long been characterised as being dominated by high street chains so we wanted to carry this value on our new venture with us. We are always on the lookout for more traders to build a relationship with!”

TIGER YARD

As many of us know, Tiger Yard isn’t Nick’s first venture in Cardiff, having founded local favourite DEPOT as a temporary food market in 2014 Subsequently, in May 2015, he was granted a licence for the location at Dumballs Road serving as their home until January 2020. Following that, they relocated to Williams Way until May 19th of this year, when they moved to a huge, new venue on Curran Road. DEPOT has since developed into an entertainment hub hosting events such as their famous and universally loved ‘Bingo Lingo’ which has been replicated all over the UK.

“Our business has been highly successful and impactful to Cardiff’s creative scene. We believe that our move contributes to the narrative of who we are, allowing us to curate fresh experiences in new venues allowing us to grow with our customers.”

After a lively summer in Cardiff Castle, we were eager to find out Nick’s big plans for the rest of the year. DEPOT has recently relocated to its new 30,000-square-foot location on Curran Road which has a capacity for 2,500 people, allowing them to host even bigger events. They are responsible for bringing a summer of live music to the city, including Sir Tom Jones, who has returned after popular demand as part of his Ages and Stages tour.

Later in the Summer, Nick will be “throwing the doors open to our new New York-inspired bar, Outpost.” The brand new all-day bar and restaurant, in Pontcanna’s new Laundry. Quarter, will serve small plates as well as the all-day menu, with additional seating for private dining. The 85-cover venue will take visitors from their morning coffee right through to their working lunch, dinner and drinks. Be sure to check out their social media to ensure you don’t miss out! @outpostbarandkitchen To keep up to date with all the latest vendors check out their website or Instagram: https://tiger-yard.com/ @tigeryardcardiff

As the summer sun beams down on Cardiff, European-esque al fresco dining spots emerge throughout the city captivating our senses and calling us to indulge. On Wellfield Road, tables begin to line the street, setting the stage for lively gatherings with friends and family, whilst hidden terraces provide sun-trap dining delights. Wellfield Road’s latest contemporary culinary gem is Silures. The name is a nod to the rich cultural history of South East Wales, the warrior tribe who fiercely resisted the Roman Empire and protected their heritage. We had the opportunity to speak to the people behind the culinary magic to get the inside scoop.

Silures is owned by A&M Hospitality Group who also are the minds behind some of London’s most prestigious venues such as Savoy Grill by Gordon Ramsay, Galvin Bar and Grill, and The Coral Room. Adding to their already impressive portfolio of businesses, Silures opened its doors in May 2023 on Roath’s iconic Wellfield Road. Open Wednesday to Sunday, seating up to 100 guests in a completely reimagined space with a dedicated dog-friendly area on the rear terrace. Their menu varies depending on when you go. On weekends guests can expect a varied all-day brunch which includes dishes from avocado on toast to oysters. Sundays guests can expect their signature Sunday Roast. Silures are also showcasing a bespoke cocktail menu named ‘The Seven Wonders’, which features cocktails inspired by the cultural history of Wales. “The Silures were a powerful war tribe occupying much of ancient South Eastern Wales from 48 AD”.

SILURES

LUXURY A H I D D E N

Cardiff is home to a number of high-end restaurants that are all vying for your attention, seeking your stamp of approval. The successful minds behind Silures offer some words of wisdom as to how restaurants can create a unique and memorable al fresco dining experience. “Aim to provide an all-weather experience by installing weatherproof awnings, retractable roofs, heating, lighting, and providing pashminas and hot water bottles upon request. The weather’s the only thing we can’t control in the business, so having a strong outdoor infrastructure is key.” Creating a warming and joyful environment is just as important as the menu, which should adapt to the changing seasons. “During winter months, having a ‘Winter Warmer’ menu featuring al fresco classics such as cheese fondue, boozy hot chocolates and other small plates and warm cocktails is always a winner among our clientele.”

Al

Silures incorporate seasonal ingredients into the menu ensuring they can work with local suppliers. “The terrace at Silures is home to brunch and cocktails paired with small plates, with a menu that changes seasonally. Silures works with Welsh and British suppliers to ensure high traceability and locality within their menus.”

“For example the Atlantic Edge Pembrokeshire oysters, Dorset crab and sea trout on toast, Welsh cheese boards, and Montgomery Welsh sparkling wine. More recently, the restaurant introduced a limited-edition cocktail and rainbow acai smoothie bowl with a portion of the profits donated to local Welsh LGBTQIA+ social enterprise, the Queer Emporium in celebration of Pride Cymru.”

Byron Mossouris, head chef at Silures, has an impressive CV. “Executive Head Chef, Byron Moussouris, joins Silures following five years at acclaimed luxury hotel The Bloomsbury, and four years at The Marylebone as Head Chef prior. Born and bred in South Africa, Chef Byron was classically trained in some of the top restaurants and hotels in the country’s oldest city, Cape Town. He now brings his wealth of culinary experience to the new Roath venue as we start our new venture”

“Born in the heart of the vibrant community of Roath, Silures sets itself apart from other high-end establishments with exquisite offerings while championing environmental sustainability, local supply chains and ethical practices.”

TERRACE

Silures is the latest high-end restaurant on our radar, celebrating the essence of Welsh cuisine. The terrace is the perfect place to set the stage for memorable gatherings, whether it’s sipping unique cocktails under the open sky or savouring truly delicious dishes. You can find their menu online before heading to the new sophisticated and stylish restaurant on Wellfield Road in Roath. To top off your trip to Roath, take a leisurely stroll through the iconic Roath Park. Marvel at the lake and the park’s lush surroundings while soaking up the sun. For bookings and to view their tasty menu check out: https://www.silures-amh.com/

Immerse yourself in the essence of summer with al fresco dining in Cardiff’s city center. Rooftop settings, vibrant flowers, and the sun’s gentle caress make the perfect backdrop for carefree indulgence. As the clock strikes 5pm, the city comes alive with people escaping their offices, seeking the company of loved ones for drinks and laughter under the open sky. Let the balmy evenings and vibrant ambiance create cherished memories that linger long after summer fades away.

th e b o t a n i s

Utpon opening the terrace bar, the vision for The Botanist was to “create a great restaurant on the first floor with live music and entertainers when dining or drinking in the main bar.” Climbing higher, venturing further into the garden you will find a terrace, where you can spend the evening relaxing with your chosen cocktails or a mouthwatering burger. It offers a “fantastic indoor/outside garden feel”, keeping you covered in all weather occasions. In the evening the garden transforms from a glorious sun trap to a bar with local DJs playing all weekend.

The Botanist’s roof terrace is home to live music events on weekends and musical bingo on the first Wednesday of every month.

People having lively conversations, laughing with each other, and unwinding with signature cocktails, makes this spot a hit with customers. “The terrace is one of the best sun traps in the city with the sunset and sundown being a huge feature when you’re enjoying drinks, music, and nibbles.”

Looking up from your drink, you’ll be lucky enough to have “a fantastic view of the St John’s Tower spire, extended views to the Hodge House clock tower, the spikes of the Principality Stadium, and the clock tower of the Castle.” They also hold events and activations from huge brands, which can be more than a little fun. Another perfect spot for basking in the sun is Jacob’s Roof Garden. Nestled amidst high-rises, it offers an undisturbed getaway that overlooks “all the Mill Lane madness”. Boasting panoramic views of the city, they host rooftop coffee shops, BYOB events and “drinks with a view” events almost daily.

Every visit promises an escape from the city, without needing to leave it. Immerse yourself in the garden surroundings as you savour nibbles and quench your thirst.

Our last outdoor dining delightis a new hot spot in Cardiff’s acclaimed five-star Voco hotel. They have unveiled a new terrace at Tir a Môr just in time for summer, with panoramic views of Cardiff Bay and Penarth Marina, adding it to an ever expanding list of al fresco dining options. Their new terrace announcement comes in partnership with esteemed champagne house Moët & Chandon, raising a toast for those who join. The hotel promises a “real treat for those with a passion for quality, locally sourced, and seasonally appropriate ingredients.” To treat yourself to an elevated culinary experience surrounded by the beauty of Cardiff’s water: Head over to their website and book a spot. Another Pride Month has been and gone, marked by the annual Pride Cymru event where the LGBTQIA+ community and fellow allies line the streets of Cardiff to celebrate and honour their community. The Pride festival covers two stages over two days, varying from big names to local talent. Throughout the month, Cardiff hosted an abundance of events to share people’s stories far and wide to help people come together in love and friendship.

One event in the month that stood out was the audiovisual trail ‘Proud’ designed to focus on the importance of representation, self-acceptance, and being proud of one’s identity.

‘Proud’ was brought to Cardiff as a collaborative effort commissioned by ‘FOR Cardiff’ and curated by ‘Heard Storytelling’. ‘FOR Cardiff’ works hard to deliver improvements for businesses in the city centre, as well as the wider community.

Their core pillars are to enhance, deliver, and represent, and their aim is to nurture an environment that locals are proud of. ‘Heard Storytelling’ specialises in creating empowering opportunities through building fun and safe places.

This collaborative collection exhibited eight living portraits throughout the city’s shopping streets. The visual train drew the attention of shoppers, diners and art enthusiasts alike. By scanning QR codes, the public could listen to different perspectives, offering insight into their personal journey to self-acceptance.

The personal and candid journeys encompassed a diverse range of experiences, ranging from the streets of Pakistan, clubs of Cardiff, hospital waiting rooms, and to the funfairs of Barry Island. Stories included award-winning author and founder of Drag Queen Story Hour UK, Aida H Dee, along with partner Theo, all wanting to share their stories to tell people it’s okay to be different and help give others a voice.

Other touching stories told tales of friendships, overcoming struggles, and transformations. Organisers are delighted to bring such touching stories to the city, especially during Pride Month, bringing together lived experiences into an immersive experience for everyone to enjoy. Participants feel hopeful they can inspire others out there to feel comfortable to be themselves.

In light of these candid narratives, we are reminded of the highs and lows people face on the journey to selfacceptance with the storytellers left feeling immensely proud, influencing others to start their self-acceptance journey.

At its core, feminism represents a belief in gender equality and the pursuit of dismantling systemic barriers that limit opportunities for women. It encompasses the fight against gender-based discrimination, advocating for fair treatment, and amplifying women’s voices and experiences. Feminism in business acknowledges the unique challenges faced by women, from the glass ceiling to unequal pay, and aims to create an environment where they can flourish.

EMPOWERING MINDSET

To succeed as a woman in business, cultivating an empowering mindset is crucial. Embrace your skills, knowledge, and unique perspective, recognising that they hold immense value. Banish self-doubt and imposter syndrome by understanding that you have earned your place at the table through hard work and merit. Surround yourself with supportive individuals who uplift and inspire you. Remember, your voice matters, and your contributions are indispensable.

EMPOWERING WOMEN IN BUSINESS

Embracing Feminism

BALANCING & SELF-CARE ESTABLISHING STRONG NETWORKS

Establishing strong networks and seeking mentorship can significantly bolster your career progression in the business landscape. Engage with like-minded professionals, both within and beyond your industry, to foster connections that can provide valuable insights, collaborations, and growth opportunities. Look for mentors who have paved their own paths, as their guidance and wisdom can help navigate obstacles and achieve your goals with greater confidence.

NEGOTIATING & ASSERTIVENESS

One critical aspect of women’s empowerment in business lies in mastering the art of negotiation. Studies have shown that women often face unique challenges when it comes to negotiating for higher salaries, promotions, or project opportunities. It is vital to recognise your worth and advocate for yourself assertively. Develop negotiation skills, research market trends, and demonstrate the value you bring to the table. Remember, by advocating for your own success, you contribute to breaking down barriers for future generations of women in business.

EMBRACING COLLABORATION

Collaboration and cooperation are essential pillars of feminism in business. Recognise that success is not a zero-sum game; lifting others up does not diminish your own achievements. Foster a supportive and inclusive work environment where women can collaborate, share knowledge, and uplift each other. Seek opportunities to mentor and support fellow female professionals; together, we can create a more equitable and empowering business landscape.

As women in business, it is vital to strike a balance between ambition and self-care. Ambition fuels growth and propels us forward, but not at the expense of our well-being. Prioritise self-care, set boundaries, and practice mindfulness to prevent burnout. Surround yourself with a strong support system, both personally and professionally, to ensure your overall well-being remains intact. Remember, caring for yourself is not a sign of weakness but a strategic investment in your long-term success. Feminism in business empowers women to challenge norms, overcome obstacles, and thrive in their fields. With an empowering mindset, strong networks, assertive negotiation, collaboration, and balanced ambition and self-care, women lead toward a more equitable future.

Feminism isn’t just for women—it’s a collective responsibility that should be embraced by all. The fight for equality transcends gender boundaries and requires the collective effort of individuals, regardless of their gender identity. Men have a crucial role to play as allies in challenging gender stereotypes, dismantling patriarchal structures, and advocating for equal opportunities. By acknowledging that feminism is a societal concern, we can foster a more inclusive and compassionate world.

BIG the interview

INTRODUCING SIX By Nico

Cardiff... Prepare yourselves!

The highly anticipated debut of Six by Nico, which will be situated on High Street, is swiftly approaching. With restaurants across the UK and a six-course tasting menu that will evolve every six weeks, you’ll want to have your table booked for Six by Nico’s opening week, commencing on Monday the 14th of August.

We were lucky enough to bag an exclusive interview with founder Nico Simeone just before the grand opening. Nico reveals his refreshingly innovative culinary concept designed to elevate the city’s fine dining experience and tells us exactly why Cardiff was his next, obvious choice.

Hey Nico, welcome to Cardiff! After experiencing nationwide success, what made you decide to open your first restaurant in Wales?

“Hey guys, it’s nice to chat. Well, I suppose it’s a mixture of things. As the concept began to gain interest, the natural thing to do was grow. When planning for the future, I and the teams always look for cities that feel aligned with what we do creatively with food and our concept being affordable.

I was in a meeting with members of our Chief Executive team a few years ago, and we were just brainstorming locations that we would want to open in one day - of course, Cardiff was on the list. Cardiff, in my opinion, has a vibrant and buzzy vibe - similar to my hometown of Glasgow.

The process has been longer than anticipated with the impact of 2020, finding the perfect location for the new restaurant in the city. Fortunately, we have finally done just that.

Cardiff itself is a really cool city and the people are lovely – although I haven’t been down lots, I’m eager to learn more about the area, get to know the locals, and share my passion for cooking and creativity with them.”

the big interview
Nico Simeone.

Can you tell us about the first Six by Nico menu that Cardiff will experience and what the inspiration behind it is?

“Of course! The first menu will be ‘The Chippie’ – the first tasting menu concept ever created by myself and the team six years ago. Over the years, we have reinvented and evolved every course to reach what we see as being perfect. The inspiration behind this concept takes me back to my Scots-Italian heritage and childhood. When I was growing up, my family had a chippie and I used to work with them on weekends. I even just went and spent time with them there from as young as I can remember.

So I suppose The Chippie is a celebration of this and where I first started being so heavily involved with food. I adapted this to showcase my chef career and how this has evolved over the years. The menu itself is personally important to me, and I feel really like to be able to share this with so many people. Going for a chippie on the weekend is such a nostalgic memory for many people across the country, so in some ways, everyone has their connection and story to tell, which I also think is really special.”

What is the method behind putting one of your iconic menus together?

“Our process is really collaborative and I think that’s what makes the end result pretty cool to see. The fact we change our menu every six weeks is a huge task in itself – we essentially bin the old concept and start from scratch every time. To say it out loud like that really speaks volumes about the amount of thought and work that goes into them from everyone in the company.

The process begins with just a creative brainstorming meeting between our creative development team – Andy Temple (Chief Creative Officer), Michael Sim (Chief Marketing Officer), Rachael Rafferty (Chief Operations Officer) and Morgan Pope (Brand Director), as well as the entire marketing team.

We sit down and simply throw around some ideas beginning with one creative seed – this could be anything from a memory that someone has that is so fond of them or a country they recently visited and loved the food. From there, it just grows and grows. Just one small, minor detail can create something amazing. Having everyone involved from different areas of the business helps us refine and grow the idea so that it’s not only an amazing experience for customers, but for the staff who will be creating this experience for all guests joining us at Six by Nico.”

If you were to create a tasting menu that represents the essence of Cardiff, what local ingredients or flavours would you incorporate?

“Oh, this is a difficult one! To be honest, if we were to create a menu that was regional to the area, we would involve locals and customers in the process since who knows Cardiff and Wales better than those who grew up and live there - right? I think the creative seed, as mentioned earlier, would come from the people and then we would evolve this into a final menu for Cardiff/Wales to enjoy.”

In a nutshell, what can Cardiff expect from Six by Nico?

“I’ll try my best to summarise this one! I think overall, we just want everyone to be able to enjoy a really amazing experience for an affordable price. This has always been our goal as a team, and it’s what we’re truly proud of. Everything from the menu to the interior has been planned to celebrate elements of Cardiff/Wales and Six by Nico — creating synergy and allowing natural elements of Cardiff to be felt in the experience. I’m genuinely excited to open — the response online has been amazing so far, and we can’t wait to welcome everyone, finally.”

Six by Nico Cardiff will be opening to the public on Monday 14th of August. Bookings are now live and are filling up quickly! For bookings and to sign up for exciting menu announcements: www.sixbynico.co.uk/cardiff/

Caerdydd Cynaliadwy

Eich canllaw boced i siopa, bwyta a byw n gynaliadwy yn ein prifddinas.

Dyddiau hyn mae mwy o bobl nag erioed yn dod yn fwy ecoymwybodol, wrth ystyried sut y bydd ein harferion siopa a’n ffyrdd o fyw yn effeithio ar ein planed, naill ai’n gadarnhaol neu’n negyddol. Ond, gall hyn fod braidd yn anodd weithiau, yn enwedig os ydych chi newydd ddechrau ar eich taith i fyw’n fwy cynaliadwy. Yn hawdd iawn, gyda’r holl wybodaeth i geisio deall a’r ffactorau gwahanol i’w ystyried, gallwch chi feindiwch eich hunain, fel oeddwn i flynyddoedd yn nôl, wedi’ch llethu’n llwyr ac yn meddwl ‘ble i ddechrau?’. Ond peidiwch â phoeni, gan fod fi yma i helpu! Rydw i wedi guradu’r canllaw hwn er mwyn i chi wybod y llefydd gorau i ddechrau siopa, bwyta a byw’n fwy cynaliadwy yn ein prifddinas.

Siop Sero, Rhiwbina

Wedi’i sefydlu fel siop nid-er-elw gan Cath Richards, agorodd Siop Sero ei drysau yn Rhiwbeina dros ddwy flynedd yn ôl. Ei nod yw gwneud siopa di-blastig a chynaliadwy yn fwy hygyrch i bobl Caerdydd, ac i helpu i hwyluso prosiectau amgylcheddol o fewn y gymuned lleol. Ofewn y siop oddi ar Heol Beulha, y mae’r silffoedd llawn dop o nwyddau cynaliadwy, gyda phopeth o basta sych i gynhyrchion glanhau’r cartref y gellir eu hail-lenwi tro ar ôl tro – does wir ddim rheswm i siopa unrhyw le arall. I’r rhai sydd â dant melys, mae yno ddigonedd o siocled a melysion i chi drio, gan gynnwys rhai fegan. Maent hyd yn oed yn gwerthu siampŵau a chyflyrydd cŵn sy’n gyfeillgar i’r amgylchedd, ac felly gall hyd oed yn eich ffrind bach blewog helpu achub yr amgylchedd. Mae nhw wir wedi meddwl am bopeth, fel nad oes rhaid i chi!

Y mae’r flwyddyn hwn yn un cyffroes iawn i’r brand Siop Sero, wrth iddyn nhw ehangu dros yr haf a chymryd drosodd siop Ripple yn y Rhath. Pan agored Ripple yn wreiddiol, dros bum mlynedd yn ôl, dyma oedd y siop ddiwastraff gyntaf Caerdydd.

Overseas Apparel, Arcêd Frenhinol

Am flynyddoedd lawer, mae dadl wedi bodoli bo ni all dillad cynaliadwy bod yn ffasiynol. Ond, diolch i Overseas Apparel, nid yw ffasiwn erioed wedi edrych mor ecogyfeillgar! Rhedwyd yn ddyddiol ac yn annibynnol gan y sylfaenydd Liam Jones, mae Overseas Apparel (OSA) yn cynnig dillad ecogyfeillgar a steilus, o ansawdd uchel am brisiau fforddiadwy i bobl Caerdydd, a phob un wedi’u dylunio a’u hargraffu yn eu pencadlys yng

Nghaerdydd.I sicrhau bod pawb yn gallu edrych yn ffasiynol ar eu taith i fyw’n fwy cynaliadwy, mae dillad OSA yn unrhywiol ac yn well byth, wedi’u greu naill allan o ddeunyddiau organig, neu rhai sydd wedi’i hailgylchu

Ond beth am gyfwisgoedd stylish, cynaliadwy? Wel, mae OSA wedi meddwl am hyn yn barod! Trwy gydweithio clyfar â busnesau eraill yng

Nghaerdydd, fel Lucky Foot Leather a GB Cermaics, mae OSA hefyd yn gwerthu popeth o waledi lledr Eidalaidd, triniedig gan ddefnyddio llysiau, i hetiau beanie sydd wedi’u greu allan o blastig sydd wedi’u hailgylchu.

Caffi’r Ardd Gudd, Parc Bute

Ifi, does ‘na ddim byd gwell na ymlacio a chloncian dros goffi gyda ffrind ym Marc Bute. Ond, oes ‘na ffordd o wneud hwn mewn modd sy’n well i’r amgylchedd? Oes, wrth gwrs! Wedi’i leoli yn ganolbarth Parc Bute, y mae’r Caffi’r Ardd Gudd. Ers agor yn 2018, y mae’r caffi wedi’i redeg yn annibynnol gan y perchennog, gyda gwerthoedd cynaliadwy wrth galon y busnes cyfan. Daeth hwn i’r amlwg wrth i’r caffi ennill gwobr Allwedd Wyrdd yn 2019 am ei waith o leihau ei effaith weithredol ar yr amgylchedd.

Gan ddefnyddio dim byd ond cynnyrch a chynhwysion lleol ac organig, y mae’r Caffi’r Ardd Gudd yn gweithio gyda’r tymhorau i sicrhau bwydlen ffres sy’n newid yn barhaus, gyda phopeth wedi’u paratoi gan law. Ffansi salad? Mae’r caffi’n defnyddio dail salad wedi’u tyfu yn llythrennol, rownd y gornel, yng Ngardd Salad Parc Bute. Ac fel bod hynny’n ddim yn ddigon, pob tro y mae rhywun yn prynu un o’u coffi arbenigol, y mae’r caffi yn rhoi cyfraniad ariannol i’r Ymddiriedolaethau Natur De a Gorllewin Cymru. Dwi ddim yn meddwl gallai coffi bod yn wyrddach!

Ganwyd Tom Kemp, llawrydd creadigol o Dde Cymru yn wreiddiol ym Mhontypridd. Ar ôl syrthio mewn cariad â’r grefft o berfformio yn ifanc, dechreuodd Tom weithio’n broffesiynol fel actor gyda chredydau gan gynnwys Frankie (BBC), Broadchurch (ITV), Trollied (Sky) a Da Vinci’s Demons (Starz a Fox). Yn ystod y blynyddoedd diwethaf, mae Tom wedi cyflwyno ar gyfer S4C a’u platfform digidol Hansh, yn arbennig fel golygydd dylunio mewnol ar gyfer Prynhawn Da ac yn fuan bydd yn perfformio mewn sioe gerdd Gymraeg newydd. Efallai bod ei lais yn gyfarwydd i gymuned Gymraeg De Cymru, o gyd-gyflwyno sioe radio nos Sul am ddwy flynedd. Ers blynyddoedd lawer, mae cynaliadwyedd wedi bod wrth wraidd gwaith Tom. Wrth ganolbwyntio ar gynaliadwyedd o fewn y diwydiannau ffasiwn a manwerthu yn ystod brifysgol, yn 2019, ef oedd y person cyntaf i adrodd ar y cysyniad o eco-bryder drwy gyfrwng y Gymraeg.

REACH NEW HEIGHTS

FAMILY FUN AT BOULDERS

Boulders is a climbing centre that aims to provide a friendly and inclusive environment for both experienced and novice climbers of all ages, where people can forge memories pushing themselves to new heights. We spoke to Ollie Noakes, the joint owner of Boulders, who told us about the fun to be had at his climbing centre.

Boulder’s vision is to empower climbers, equipping them with the essential skills needed to achieve their climbing goals. Struggling through his academic years, Ollie was introduced to climbing by one of his teachers, and just like that his passion for climbing was born. They taught him the basic skills needed to gain his instructor qualifications, that way he could work as an instructor after leaving school. He was immediately hooked. Wanting to share his passion for climbing, Ollie found it pushed him even more to obtain his qualification.

Over the past 15 years, Ollie has seen “thousands of people from all walks of life, from children who don’t enjoy mainstream sports finding their new hobby, to those looking for a confidence boost and a fun way to exercise.” They have several users with additional needs who have “flourished since beginning their climbing journey”. It’s no secret sports nurtures a sense of community. Ollie has seen people come to the climbing centre knowing no one and make a whole group of friends. He claims the centre has even been responsible for a marriage or two! “I’m proud to have welcomed a lot of adults who thought sport wasn’t for them, who have since found a space in our community.”

Sports can foster confidence in people who take part.

“Many people think climbing is only for adrenaline junkies or super active people, but it’s far broader than that! Think of running - some people sprint 100m or run an ultra-marathon, and some people jog around the block or do fun runs. Climbing is comparable in that you climb in a way that suits you. As well as the physical element, there’s also a strong mental element involved in the problem-solving aspect of the sport.”

If you’ve got a celebration coming up or you simply want a fun day with the family, look no further than Boulders. There aren’t many sports where the whole family can participate, children and grandparents alike, but as Ollie knows, climbing is one of them. Boulders run ‘Give It A Go’ classes for anyone over seven years old. All the equipment is included and there is a fully qualified Boulders instructor on hand to supervise. “We try to remove all the barriers to climbing and make it very accessible.” Being accessible is something that Boulders pride themselves on.

The team at Boulders also run birthday parties for children who want to have fun with their friends and do something active, all parents need to do is bring the cake! Oh, and the children of course. If you’re looking to keep the kids entertained this summer, Boulders also have plenty of events planned.

“We have a friendly monthly climbing event, outdoor climbing taster days for all ages, as well as a BBQ night”. Fancy learning the ropes? Check out their website, or pop in to Boulders at Culverhouse Cross or Newport Road.

THE CELTIC MANOR R E S O R T FAMILY FUN

There’s certainly no shortage of activities when it comes to a family day out at The Celtic Manor Resort. Come rain or shine, you can spend a relaxing day swimming, test your nerves in an exhilarating game of laser combat, or spend a day in the forest climbing through nets and navigating your way through the high ropes. If high ropes aren’t your thing you won’t be short for walks, treasure hunts, adventure golf, low ropes, archery, laser clay, foot golf, golf lessons or Top Tracer interactive games on the driving range. The list is endless!

Planning a day at the resort? Start with a filling breakfast, the same way every great day starts! Once everyone has fuelled up and ready for an action-packed day, head to the adventure golf cabin to grab a putter and some balls. Here the whole family can challenge each other on the mini golf course. If you’re looking for something more advanced, head to the Golf Academy later and try the interactive digital games on the Top Tracer Range.

Once you’ve established who the golf pro of the family is, wander over to the archery which is conveniently located nearby, grabbing your bow and arrow from outside the hotel. After a competitive morning you may have worked up quite the appetite. Head to Merlins Bar or the Forum Café to indulge in a spot of lunch. Finally, throughout the afternoon embrace the outdoors by heading to the treetops on the Forest Jump Ropes or bounce your way around the Forest Nets. Whether your little ones are ready to burn off some energy or eager to unleash their inner artists, The Celtic Manor Resort is hosting several one-off activities over the summer including sports day and arts and crafts.

With so much to do, why not make a weekend of it? The Celtic Manor Resort certainly has no shortage of comfortable accommodations. From family rooms at the resort, to more secluded stays at their luxury ‘Hunter Lodges’, there’s something for everyone. The lodges are perfect for larger families to enjoy quality time together and are complete with idyllic views and a private hot tub. Here, you’re guarenteed a memorable stay!

With its diverse landscapes and an abundance of activities, Cardiff offers the perfect backdrop for a variety of family-friendly adventures. There’s one experience that stands out as an absolute must-try: stand up paddleboarding (or SUP, for short). Kris Roach, the owner of SUP Hike Explore, describes paddleboarding as an “instant mood booster”.

Whether you and your family prefer a leisurely cruise down the Taff taking in the sights, or you’re looking for a fun way to work out, a day of paddleboarding promises to be a fun day out. We had the pleasure of speaking with Kris, who shared some insights about his own paddleboarding experiences as well as his encounters with his customers on the Taff.

Switching careers is a big challenge, especially when it’s to start your own business. Kris completed his UK mountain SUP challenge, pushing him to further develop his paddleboarding skills and

COVID-19 forced Kris to take the plunge and turn his hobby into his full-time job. Prior to lockdown hitting in March 2020, “I was working in luxury retail using paddleboarding as an escape from my ‘9-5’, so the gravitational pull to the outdoors has always been there. Luckily, my partner and I were surrounded by rolling hills and I was able to explore highlighting my love for the outdoors.”

S U P

Khe wanted more flexibility in his work. After lockdown, Kris decided to use his “passion for paddleboarding to help others enjoy the benefits of the outdoors”. His ultimate goal of SUP Hike Explore is “to show people how lucky we are to be surrounded by nature with adventure just on our doorstep.”

Blue spaces (outdoor environments–either natural or manmade–that prominently feature water and are accessible to people), are scientifically proven to improve mental health. Kris’ way of life can help to promote a healthy lifestyle, both mentally and physically. Paddleboarding is great for you in many ways as “it promotes social interaction, unites you with the water and nature, as well as helping improve your physical and mental health.” Unlike Kris, not many people get to call the great outdoors their everyday office.

friendly, making it easy to make friends within the community.” Finding time amidst busy schedules can be challenging, but it’s crucial. Once you acquire the knowledge, paddleboarding socials can be a great outlet, allowing you to truly disconnect from the real world. “We have only two rules: no emails or phone calls allowed, and only selfies and smiles while on the water!”.

Kris believes paddleboarding is an all-season activity, so continues to offer lessons throughout autumn and winter, acknowledging that “it can be a tough time for many people, but it’s also a great option for people looking to get outside and continue reaping the benefits of our blue spaces. Even paddling on the grayest and wettest of days, you’ll feel great. It’s an immediate mood booster getting out of the water”.

FAMILY FUN Cardiff Life | Page 36

As well as the mental and physical benefits that paddleboarding can provide, Kris was lucky enough to get up close and personal to a Kingfisher during one of his lessons. Not only that, other notable wildlife sightings include; Herons, Cormorants, minks, fish, ducks, dragonflies, and a “swimming squirrel!” If you’re thinking about a lesson with SUP Hike Explore, “picture the fauna and flora with the glassy reflections that you only see on Instagram, making you feel like you could be anywhere in the world”. Although Kris has paddled all over the nation, his favourite spots are within the Brecon Beacons National Park, Cardiff, and the South Wales coast.

While venturing the Taff may sound like light work, paddleboarding is actually a full-body workout, with the added bonus of exploring your surroundings. Don’t fret though, as paddleboarding can be tailored to suit your skill and fitness level. “Whether you decide to venture up the Taff with views of the fairytale Castell Coch or go hard to get that PB on a 5K paddle, it can be as challenging or as relaxing as you want it to be”, Kris told us.

If you like the idea of exploring the picturesque river Taff but are unsure where to start, paddleboarding adventures could be your answer. SUP Hike Explore run lessons and socials between Cardiff and Bannau Brycheiniog.

Beginner ssessions are usually a maximum of four people per session, however, there’s also an offering of customer 1:1 or 1:2 sessions. This gives you a chance to focus on your goals, whether it be to build confidence or work on turns or steerings. “Nothing makes us happier than seeing paddlers leave with new skills and knowledge, whether they are new to the sport or enhancing their techniques”. Being a part of the Canoe Wales-affiliated club gives paddlers the chance to join a community, and a huge advantage is that they cover your water licence!

If you’re worried about falling in, Kris told us “wild swimming” as he likes to call it, can be a great part of your session. “Getting in the water gives you a real buzz and allows an awesome opportunity for you to explore your self-rescue skills. It can be a discouraging experience but there are multiple ways and cool techniques to safely get back to and board your paddleboard, some of which include peer-assisted rescue. Once people are happy and comfortable, we love getting the GoPro out to capture their wild swim moment for them to post on their socials and show their friends”, said Kris.

If you’d like to get involved this summer, there are several sessions including ‘Intro to SUP’, helping to introduce you to the basics of paddleboarding. Throughout the two-hour lesson, safety, techniques, self-rescue, and paddleboarding, both on your knees and standing, is covered. “SUP Improver’ is the session for when you want to enhance your knowledge and technique. Availability is easily checked on their website and you can keep an eye on their Instagram for their social paddles”.

WHERE I’VE BEEN AND WHERE YOU SHOULD GO By

THE FLAVOUR DIARIES

Prepare to embark on a culinary adventure with Ellie Richards, known as @_theflavourdiaries on Instagram, as she unveils some of the city’s hottest eateries.

Giggling Squid has ever so kindly made the journey across the bridge and brought their unique approach to Thai dining right to the very heart of the Hayes. If you haven’t yet had the pleasure, get ready to savour dishes inspired by Thailand’s abundance of natural ingredients in our very own city. With the offering of Thai classics alongside their iconic Thai tapas, there’s a delicious dish waiting for everyone.

As you walk through the doors, the intricate artwork sets the stage for an unforgettable dining experience, and the large open windows almost make you feel as though you’re al-fresco dining. Let’s dive into the real star of the show – the food.

The vast Giggling Squid menu boasts an array of dishes, from fragrant curries to zesty stir-fries and aromatic noodle creations. Thai mealtimes are all about lots of dishes to share and enjoy together, so a varied sharing starter, specifically the delicious Chang Mai, was a no-brainer. Composed of Hawker-Style Moo Ping, Salt & Pepper Squid, Spring Rolls and Giggling Wings, we feasted on the perfect Thai tapas-style starter before it was time to tuck into the main event.

Although difficult to choose, my personal favourite was the Crispy Slow Cooked Beef: a delicious result of hours of meticulous cooking, allowing the flavours to develop and intensify. The crispy exterior of the beef added the most delightful textural contrast, providing a delicious crunch with every bite. Coming in at a close second is the Lamb Shank Massaman. Each tender bite melted in my mouth, releasing its rich, savoury flavours. The natural sweetness of the lamb combined with the fragrant spices and coconut milk left a lasting taste that I, quite frankly, never want to forget. So, if you’re after a Thai flavour sensation or simply just fancy trying out somewhere new in your city, this is your sign to book that table!

An artisanal bakery supplying specialty coffee by day, and a cosy pop-up showcasing the very best ingredients of our region, by night. This small yet completely varied menu, carefully crafted by chef Alex Vines with a residency in Ground Bakery, embodies the concept of supporting local suppliers and artisans.

With each dish perfectly prepared for sharing and each wine superbly sippable, Vines fully embrace the joy of sharing delicious food and drink with those closest to you.

From Deep Fried Baby Broad Beans with Harissa and Aioli to the most delicious Stoved New Potatoes with Little Gem, Broad Beans & Golden Cenarth, each dish held the vegetable at it’s heart.

Similarly, the Short Rib and Beef Shin Ragu (although a meat dish) allowed the courgette to take centre stage – quite literally through the dishes’ gorgeously rich taste and presentation. Last but not least, let’s not forget the flavours of the Fig Leaf Set Cream with Chocolate Sauce and Amaretti, where the fig gave a unique botanical twist, adding a touch of sophistication to every spoonful.

F L A V O U R

With every bite of each dish, you could certainly taste the passion and dedication that goes into sourcing and compiling the finest seasonal ingredients for us all to enjoy. Although this menu initially felt unfamiliar, as I usually centre my meals around meat, my initial reservations soon became a thing of the past.

This charming and cosy space is a haven for food enthusiasts seeking a taste of Welsh excellence. Want in on the action? Of course you do. You can choose from Thursday, Friday or Saturday evenings to reserve a table to enjoy delicious natural wines and dishes centred around locally grown vegetables.

After taking up baking in lockdown 2020, Rhian Jones (of Elyse Bakes) soared to success with her show-stopping celebration cakes, famous heart-shaped brownies and her moreish cupcakes. The success has led her to the current day, where you can find Green Door Bakery nestled in the heart of Cyncoed Village. With its exceptional coffee and homemade bakes, the bakery has truly captured the hearts and palates of locals since opening its doors in May 2022.

Whether you’re a sucker for a strong espresso punch or prefer to savour an extra hot skinny latte (yes, that is my go-to coffee order), they have you covered. Prepare for a caffeine fix that will kick start your day the right way! Forget breakfast at home, you’ll also want to start your day with their delicious homemade goods. AT THE CASTLE S u m m e r t i m e

After packing out the Castle with a series of incredible shows welcoming international artists like Sting, Blondie, Westlife, Hozier and The Lumineers to the Welsh capital, on the 8th July the DEPOT team topped it all off with their signature one-day festival DEPOT In The Castle. Now in its fifth year, DEPOT in the Castle is Cardiff’s annual homegrown one-day festival based in the iconic surroundings of the castle grounds; headliners over the years have included Kaiser Chiefs, Tom Grennan, Ella Eyre, Clean Bandit and The Fratellis.

This year, it was the turn of Tom Jenkins, General Levy, Caity Baser, Cat Burns, Example and Bastille to rock the Cardiff crowds.

It was the perfect way to kick off the summer, with over 80,000 attendants that enjoyed the festivities as the sun set over the city.

There’s still more to come from the DEPOT team; Welsh legend, Sir Tom Jones, will be taking over the castle for a third time this year on Saturday 5th August as part of his Ages and Stages tour. We can’t wait!

Our columnist Jane Cook is known for her esteemed authority in culinary delights, indie PR and being the mind behind the Cardiff Wine Passport. As an advocate for sustainability, Jane shines a light on the subject. In recent years, the Cardiff restaurant scene has witnessed a growing trend towards tasting menus - where diners are treated to a carefully curated selection of dishes for a fixed price per head.

But it’s not just a matter of local chefs blindly following a fad. In the midst of 2023’s ongoing cost of living crisis, there are lots of reasons why tasting menus and set menus are becoming almost as popular as their à la carte counterparts.

Tasting menus, as well as being heaps of fun to eat, can help reduce food waste, a significant and costly issue in the industry. Traditional menus often lead to unwanted waste, as chefs needing to prepare a wide range of dishes based on unpredictable customer choices.

By offering a tasting menu, chefs can instead plan and execute every order with precision, whilst also encouraging diners to be more adventurous with everything on their plates.

Chef Tom Waters serves a seven-course tasting menu at his Gorse Restaurant pop up, which has recently moved from Ground in Pontcanna, to the Potting Shed at Insole Court.

CARDIFF TASTING MENUS

A GASTRONOMIC DELIGHT FOR THE S U S T A I N A B I L I T Y S A V V Y

UPCOMING DATES FOR YOUR DIARY:

Chef Andy Aston, co-owner of Hiraeth restaurant and pub in Cowbridge, believes that their tasting menu offering enables them to “have a greater emphasis on the produce, how it was made, and the food miles it travels before it reaches the kitchen – and this will only improve as we establish ourselves and build up our network.”

Finally, the act of limiting diner choice makes for a more mindful, ‘quality over quantity’ approach. It’s easy to spot on the Middle Eastern set menus offered by Lahmacun, a pop-up supperclub that will be returning to Kings Road Yard later this month. Here, the hearty menu is centred around an abundance of seasonal veggies, with centrepieces coming from the likes of Atlantic Edge Oysters and Penrhiw Organic Farm. By only offering a single set menu, Lahmacun are able to focus on using the best and most sustainable ingredients available, confident in the knowledge that not a single mouthful will go to waste – a strategy we can all aim to emulate at home, too.

He explained, “As a pop-up, it makes perfect sense for me to serve a tasting menu because it allows me to have absolutely no waste. With a traditional à la carte menu, it’s close to impossible to guess exactly what you’ll sell, and often you’ll be left with surplus food. A tasting menu also means I can serve everything at the peak of deliciousness, whether it’s a piece of aged beef, a stiff-fresh mackerel or a bunch of radishes, everything has its optimum window. When I know, for instance, that I’ll be serving 18 portions of mackerel that night, I can take my pick of the very best there is.” This promise of ‘the best there is’ is often met by using exclusively local and super-seasonal ingredients. This in turn supports nearby farmers and producers, and keeps money circulating within the local economy.

IN THE SAFETY

Iam lucky enough to have been brought up in Carmarthenshire with the countryside right on my doorstep. I have spent a lifetime hiking through the rolling hills of Wales and sometimes I feel more at home outdoors than I do under my own roof. I volunteer with Mountain Rescue so am privileged to have turned something I love into a way of helping others.

Hiking gives me time to just think, clear my head and go at my own pace. It encourages me to focus on my surroundings and put things into perspective. The health benefits are innumerable. Besides the obvious improvement in fitness, spending time outdoors can help with depression and anxiety, stress reduction, improved sleep, boosted immunity, improved emotional wellbeing and so much more.

Another way of getting off the beaten track and experiencing the pure tranquillity of the outdoors is wild camping. You’re not going on your own are you? Is that safe? What if something happens? Won’t you be scared? These are just some of the questions I get asked when I go on a wild camp. Of course, they’re all valid and I completely understand where they’re coming from. Women especially are programmed from a young age never to go anywhere alone. Most of us have that little voice in our heads, the voice that keeps us safe and tries to keep us away from danger. We constantly hear these terrible stories and so it’s no surprise that many have reservations about venturing off alone with a tent, away from people and in isolation.

So why do I do it? It’s peaceful. When all the hikers have gone home, you have the mountain to yourself to watch the sun disappear behind the peaks and a beautiful blanket of stars fill the dark night sky. In the morning you unzip your tent to watch the sky almost on fire at first light before the sun rises. It’s just magical.

“But isn’t wild camping illegal?”, I hear you cry. Well, no. It is actually legal in Scotland, and while not technically illegal in England and Wales, it is a civil offence unless you get the landowner’s permission. However, it is generally tolerated as long as you camp respectfully and leave no trace.

Finding the right kit is half the battle and honestly, I’m still working on it. Each time I camp I come back with a list of things I could do better, don’t need to bring or things I wish I’d brought. The main things that I consider when buying or packing kit is weight and warmth and I think, besides safety, this is the main barrier for most people when wild camping – “How am I going to carry all that up a mountain?”.

I’m not going to lie and tell you that it’s easy because it isn’t but there are things that you can do to make it easier. First things first, get a good backpack that fits well. I started off with a unisex one which was just a little too wide for my back and I ended up really hurting my shoulder. You’ll need to get a minimum of 65L which sounds like a lot but trust me, you will soon fill it.

Next on the list is a lightweight one-man tent. Look for something 1kg-2kg in weight that ideally packs down small. I have about 5 different tents, depending on the season and whether I take someone with me. I think my lightest is just under 1kg.

“To me, hiking is empowering, it’s freedom, it’s euphoric, it’s exciting and ends with a real sense of accomplishment.”

"wHEN ALL THE HIKERS HAVE GONE HOME, YOU HAVE THE MOUNTAIN TO YOURSELF"

OF THE HILLS

Sleep. I’m going to be frank, don’t expect the most restful night’s sleep. The more you do it, the better you will get at it but for the first couple of camps you will wake up a lot and you’ll probably convince yourself that, that gust of wind that just blew against your tent was actually some crazed lunatic trying to get in. I was once woken up by what I believed was some kind of monster outside trying to eat me when in fact it was one of the horses that roam the Brecon Beacons munching down on the grass just a little too close to my tent for my liking.

It gets cold even in the summer so invest in a decent sleeping bag and mat, in the winter I also use a reflective sleep pad under my mat. I take a small hot water bottle with me and it honestly makes such a difference.

Walking poles are an absolute game changer and will help get you up those inclines as well as keep you steady coming down them too. The final essential item, in my humble opinion of course, is a torch to light the way when nature calls in the middle of the night!

Ok, so let’s talk about safety, I was always apprehensive about camping alone. My rational side tells me how unlikely it is that a crazed murderer just happens to be at the same remote spot ready to get me as soon as I fall asleep. I live, hike, travel and work alone but still…

There are of course things you can do to reassure not only you but your family and friends. Let them know your plans and send them your live location. If mobile signal is sketchy you can also get mini satellite communicators, I have a Garmin inReach mini which allows me to send messages to loved ones as well as the emergency services. They can also track me and see my exact location.

Make sure you know your route and feel comfortable navigating in the dark just in case. I pick my camp spots while I’m out hiking and sometimes I will walk it several times before I actually camp there. Ensure you have enough light for the route that you’ve picked and if you feel yourself running out of time, maybe reassess and see if you can camp where you are. I’m sure this goes without saying but avoid any extreme weather – there is no shame in turning back if the weather turns.

Maybe you’ll love it, maybe you won’t but you won’t know until you’ve at least tried it. It is now one of my favourite things to do and I head out every chance I get to sleep in the safety of the hills.

With four stages of music, a delicious selection of street food and a whole host of local makers and craft stalls, this year’s Tafwyl was a showcase of everything our capital has to offer! The annual celebration of Welsh language, music and culture had a new home this year, having outgrown the walls of the Castle and moved a stone’s throw away to Coopers Fields.

The crowds flocked as always, with an audience of over 7000 people there to enjoy the musical offerings of legendary Welsh singer-songwriter Dafydd Iwan, whose ‘Yma o Hyd’ was adopted by Wales’ football fans as a second anthem during last year’s World Cup.

The festival fringe also took place during the week, with the program featuring a photography exhibition of work by Oasis Cardiff refugees, various guided walks and talks, gigs featuring Yws Gwynedd and Bronwen Lewis plus a Welshlanguage drag extravaganza with Dragwyl at the WMC!

The organisers were proud to say this was the most inclusive Tafwyl ever. The event saw simultaneous translation to English available for the panel talks and presentations at the Llais (Voice) stage. They also provided free bus services to and from schools in some of Cardiff’s most economically deprived areas, offering more projects and creative opportunities to the young people in the city! Highlights of the festival, as well as a live broadcast of Saturday night headliners Bwncath’s full set, are available to enjoy on BBC iPlayer and S4C socials.

ACQUISITION I N T E R V I E W

Chelsea, the founder and CEO of the all-inone marketing and PR WCS Agency, has made waves with the recent acquisition of the Cardiff Life magazine. WCS’ team of ‘social sensations’ are renowned for delivering tangible results that strengthen brands’ positions within their desired markets. WCS also hosts monthly networking events, better known as The Diary of Digital Marketing. They aim to provide a space for marketers and business owners to build meaningful connections whilst soaking up indispensable knowledge. Between these events, WCS Agency impart their invaluable expertise through their monthly webinars. Acquiring Cardiff Life is an exciting next step for Chelsea, who can bring the agency’s award-winning marketing knowledge to the magazine.

What prompted you to acquire the magazine?

“Cardiff Life has been a part of Cardiff’s scene for 17 years. We’re talking about a magazine that shines a spotlight on everything awesome in Cardiff – from cool local businesses and events to the buzzing arts, and entertainment scene. It has been a tool our clients at WCS Agency have successfully used over the years, so naturally, when we heard it was hitting stop, we saw it as a chance to jump in and bring our digital know-how to the table.”

How does Cardiff Life add value to the city?

“Cardiff Life is like the city’s cheerleader. It hypes up local businesses, brings attention to events, and celebrates the local heroes who make Cardiff such a great place to be. It makes people feel proud of their city and gives tourists the inside scoop on where to go and what to do.”

What was Cardiff Life’s original strategy and how are you changing it?

“Cardiff Life’s original strategy was focused on traditional print media, offering a high-quality publication that people could pick up and read at their leisure. While we respect and will continue this approach because of the value it brings, we also recognise the importance of evolving with the digital era. We intend to integrate a stronger digital presence, including an updated online platform and a more active social media presence. We believe this will ensure that Cardiff Life remains relevant, accessible, and engaging for all readers, no matter how they choose to consume content.”

acquisition interview
Cardiff Life | Page 54

As primarily a digital marketing agency, why did you look to explore a printed publication?

“Our core business may be digital marketing, but we also understand the unique value of printed media. Print offers a different kind of experience—it is tangible, immersive, and has a certain longevity that digital often lacks. Plus, the tactile experience of print can make the connection with the reader more personal and meaningful. Venturing into print allows us to diversify our offerings and create a more comprehensive, integrated media strategy that combines the best of both digital and traditional media.”

Can you tell us what the future of ‘Cardiff Life’ looks like?

“The future of Cardiff Life is incredibly exciting. We aim to uphold the essence of what the magazine has always been—a celebration of Cardiff—but take it to new heights. We’re planning a seamless integration of print and digital platforms to create a truly crossmedia experience. Our readers will be able to interact with Cardiff Life wherever they are and however they prefer. We’re launching a website, adding in more Welsh translations, and focusing on content that’s created by the people of Cardiff, for the people of Cardiff. It’s going to be more interactive, inclusive, and connected than ever before. Expect to see richer content, engaging digital interfaces, and even events that bring the pages of Cardiff Life to life. The future of Cardiff Life is bright, bold, and connected.”

How can people get in touch with you if they are interested in being featured in the magazine?

“We welcome and encourage people who are interested in being featured in Cardiff Life to reach out to us. They can contact us via email at info@cardifflife.wales or through our social media channels. We are always eager to hear from individuals, businesses, or events that make Cardiff such a vibrant and dynamic city.”

The acquisition marks a new chapter for Cardiff Life, signifying a marriage between traditional print and digital media, revolutionising and modernising the magazine. Cardiff Life will continue to add value to the city, capturing events, and cheering on independents,. Readers can expect to revel in an array of eye-capturing and head-turning content infused with the spirit of Cardiff.

Rob’s dad fostered an inquisitive and entrepreneurial spirit, encouraging the first of his business ventures at just thirteen, which was a tennis academy.

After earning his Business degree from the University of South Wales, he began working on ROCK. Since the age of sixteen, Rob has been fixing computers for clients, he continued to do this right through university to make ends meet.

During this time, he saw how quickly technology was evolving and shaping businesses, but many struggled to adapt and keep up. Rob aimed to “help clients achieve success by building transformative pathways to navigate the digital age.”

The 2008 credit crunch only made the period harder for businesses. Rob noticed the growing need for “affordable yet exceptional IT support” so, taking a leap of faith, Rob offered unlimited IT support for a flat monthly fee. Few companies did this, but, at a time when businesses were desperate to cut costs it made ROCK desirable.

Initially, Rob didn’t have the money needed to start the business so he sold his car for £1,000. It was risky, but Rob had a strong belief that with the right product and service offering he could transform businesses. From there ROCK was born.

After spending years on a “shoestring budget reinvesting all my profits back into my expanding team and adopting new technologies... The risk paid off.” Over ten years, ROCK had gone from a “fledgling IT service to a leading UK technology consultancy, completing over 10,000 technology projects and addressing five million support queries”.

By investing over a million pounds towards building ROCK’s own automated IT issue resolution systems, ROCK preceded the mainstream adoption of AI, automation, machine learning and analytics, significantly reducing labour costs and enabling them to keep clients’ costs down. Between 2021-2023, ROCK’s profits grew ten times their previous figure due to the implementation of an AI-focussed strategy. Rob wanted to show that others could do this, resulting in 40 new clients.

Rob’s customers are at the heart of everything he does, focusing entirely on customer-centric solutions. Last year, Rob had a client renewal rate of 99.2%, many of whom have been with him since the beginning. Rob’s been rewarded for his hard work by being recognised as one of the top 50 Welsh Fastest Growing Businesses as well as being awarded ‘Great British Entrepreneur of the Year’ for his “dedication and hard work”.

His ambition doesn’t stop at business success. Rob is committed to making a positive impact on the planet and empowering his ever-growing team, creating an inspiring workplace culture. Despite his accolades, his focus remains on “continual evolution, improving business practices, and creating positive societal impact, leading ROCK on an extraordinary journey beyond the stars”.

& THE ROCK TEAM

Amonth before the launch of ROCK in April of 2008, Rob’s father handed him an issue of Forbes magazine stamped with uncertainty about the future of businesses and the pending financial storm. While this may deter most people, Rob was inspired by the leaders and contributors “who dared to defy the odds”.

Fast forward 15 years later, Forbes called offering him a position as a contributor on ROCK’s anniversary. Rob told us, “it is an immense privilege to be amongst an esteemed network of leaders at Forbes”. Technology is a constant evolution where new technologies, such as AI, are becoming more present in daily life. AI has people in two minds but, Rob feels it can “drastically improve efficiency, customer service and productivity, if used responsibly”. To find out more about ROCK go to www.rock.co.uk/

THE PEOPLE WHO MAKE CARDIFF THE EXCEPTIONAL CITY THAT IT IS

CARDIFF CHARACTERS OF I

ntroducing... Jo Perkins, the head physiotherapist for the WRU women’s squad. She has had an impressive career since her graduation from Cardiff University nearly 10 years ago. Having her second child highlighted the lack of specific female health support for women postpartum, leading to a career focus in all aspects of female health and sports medicine. Since leaving her eightseason career at the Scarlets she has seen the WRU women’s team lead the tech revolution in menstrual cycle tracking, partnerships with period underwear brand WUKA and help break taboos among pelvic floor issues. During her role the team has had great success, finishing third in this year’s six nations and becoming 6th in the world - the highest Wales have ever ranked!

We’re curious, what sparked your interest in physiotherapy?

“I was lucky that I knew what I wanted to do from a very young age. I always played sports and after seeing a phsio myself as a teenager I knew that was what I wanted to do.”

You have worked in the field for over 10 years. Have you always enjoyed watching and playing rugby?

“I have loved watching rugby since coming to Cardiff to study in 2002. There is nowhere better than Cardiff on an international fixture day. I love seeing all the players I have previously worked with!”

Do you have an earliest memory of going to a live sporting event, or playing a sport?

“Funnily enough, basketball was always my sport, not rugby. I was lucky enough to have travelled all over the world playing basketball at both the national club level and for Wales. I’ve watched a few NBA games but my most memorable would be watching the Harlem Glob Trotters at Madison Square Gardens.”

You’ve had a very impressive career, can you tell us about some of your proudest and most memorable moments?

“For eight years I was lucky enough to have worked at the Scarlets where I witnessed the team having incredible successes. They won the league and got through to the semi-finals of European competitions, being a part of that was amazing, and something I’ll always remember. However, my proudest moment would be part of the rise of professionalism for the women’s game, allowing me to work with a fantastic group of players and staff.”

Can you tell us whether you think the industry has changed and how it is changing?

“The sporting industry is always changing. Women now have more exposure in the media and are rightly being given more equal opportunities, resources, and investment from governing bodies. A light is being shone on female health, the industry is now researching issues such as pelvic health, menstrual cycle support and injury prevention, allowing women to train and perform at their best.”

Do you think people should incorporate sports into their day-to-day lives more?

“Exercise is undoubtedly essential for us all and has huge health benefits, whatever form that looks like. The main thing is to find something that is enjoyable so you can stick to it.”

What is some advice you would give people to prevent injury in sports?

“Injury prevention is multifactorial but there are some basic things you can do to minimise injury risk including strength work with good form, mobility exercises, and ensuring you have a good balance between training volume and nutritional intake.”
