A MID-YEAR CHECKUP
As we near the mid-point of 2024, it’s hard to believe I’m 6 months into my new role at the Capital Medical Society (CMS). It’s been a whirlwind-in a great way-as I’ve learned the ropes, engaged with many of you, developed an even stronger appreciation for the commitment you make to the medical profession, and realized the significant role that CMS plays as the membership association that is the connective tissue in the local physician and medical community.
These points have crystalized for me at our signature events-the CMSF auction, the Presidential Installation, and especially at the Celebration Awards Dinner in late March, where a pair of outstanding physicians were honored, and the respect, admiration, and appreciation from their peers in the room were palpable.
To the tried and true CMS recipe, we’re now adding some new ingredients to the mix, including the inaugural CMS Pickleball Clinic staged at the end of May. Dr. Ray Dolly served as our ace instructor for a cohort with various skill levels but similar smiles during the event. Perhaps in future years the clinic will evolve to include a tournament or fundraiser-we’ll see.
EXCELLENT, including last month’s presentation by Dr. Narlin Beaty on New Interventions for Acute Strokes. If you haven’t done so already, save the dates August 27, September 17, and October 15 for the remaining meetings this year.
While you’re reserving your calendar, block out September 7th for CMS Family Day. IMAX, planetarium, food trucks, and fun-coming soon at the Challenger Learning Center.
Lastly, be on the lookout for dues renewals, which will drop in a few weeks. A complete list of membership benefits is included on page 5 of this month’s Cap Scan. As always, if you have any comments, questions, or concerns, please reach out to me.
Wishing you a happy, healthy, and safe summer!
Our membership meeting/CME dinners are on hiatus through the summer, but so far the 2024 slate has been

CMS LUNCH AND LEARN SEMINARS
MINDFULNESS
By Michelle Miller, M.D.
According to Merriam-Webster, mindfulness is defined as “the practice of maintaining a nonjudgmental state of heightened or complete awareness of one's thoughts, emotions, or experiences on a moment-tomoment basis.” Yet, most physicians will groan and say it is another hot topic of resilience and burnout that they are tired of hearing about from the c-suite to boost productivity. However, along with lifestyle medicine principles, mindfulness is a great tool we can use for not only ourselves but also our patients.
Imagine a physician stopping in front of the next patient room and looking at a poster of a sunset to refocus their mindset between patients, or taking a walk during lunch to complete a breathing exercise and look at the blooming flowers in a nearby park. These are some simple ways to incorporate mindfulness into a busy office day. I will also sometimes sit in my car and turn on the classical radio station, close my eyes, and complete a body scan meditation.
My first experience with mindfulness was while in Filipina, Panama in 2008. I had been lucky to be selected to join FSU College of Medicine’s student group FSUCares for their annual medical mission trip. I had never traveled internationally and was excited to say the least. Every day was overwhelming, from the beautiful exotic locations, spectacular sunrises and sunsets against beautiful forests, but also with the heartbreaking realization of the destitution of the welcoming community. After serving hundreds of patients daily in nearby villages, with minimal medications (mostly antiparasitics and multivitamins) and lack of specialty care, the group of medical students, residents, and doctors would debrief with well-deserved rum and cokes while competing over cribbage and learning about HeartMath with a personal meter trying to stay in “the green zone” of heart rate variability. Dr. Brummel-Smith brought the biofeedback device and we each used it while discussing HeartMath, which incorporates breathing with mindfulness, before mindfulness was a hot topic. (I’m not getting any kickbacks from HeartMath, or saying you have to use a biofeedback device to get into mindfulness, but I’m not sure if I would have enjoyed mindfulness as much as I did without the real time data and its gamification.)
At Tallahassee Memorial Family Medicine Residency, I was surprised to find that mindfulness was a priority. I shouldn’t
have been surprised since there was a patient group for healthy eating called MindfulnessBased Therapeutic Lifestyle Change program. The director of behavioral medicine and the mindfulness program was Cathy Snapp, the nicest person I think I’ve ever met. There was even HeartMath in the computer downstairs next to Cathy’s office for the residents to use. There were also lunch meetings focused on mindfulness using yoga and how to incorporate these practices in a busy setting.
During residency, I bought my own HeartMath monitor to use with my phone. This came in handy when only a few months after graduation I was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. A hallmark symptom of MS that I have been unlucky to experience daily is fatigue, but not just postexertional fatigue, this is non-remitting fatigue from the time I wake up. I wrote an article titled “Exhausted” to try to explain it but I still don’t think I have an accurate description for how it feels. However, I’ve noticed that when I am more mindful, it’s not as distressing. Focusing on my current activity keeps me from ruminating on what my normal used to be and from comparing it to my desired expectations. When I overly push myself beyond what I’m comfortable with, I end up suffering due to postexertional fatigue, or leaden paralysis, unable to move off the couch or bed.
Throughout changes in my life from pregnancy, moving to New Zealand with a preschooler, and adjusting back to being in the States, I have incorporated mindfulness on a regular basis. If you have no interest in learning about heart rate variability or HeartMath, you can incorporate it with some easy practices like square breathing (breathing in for a count of four, holding for four, breathing out for four and holding for four, then repeat), or body scans (focusing on body parts to try to relax in an ordered fashion). These are easy practices you can incorporate into your daily life or to discuss with patients.

THE ROTARY CLUB OF TALLAHASSEE HELPS IMPROVE ACCESS TO HEALTHCARE
The Rotary Club of Tallahassee presented a $2,500 check to the Capital Medical Society Foundation’s Executive Director Tom Block and We Care Network Program Coordinator Diana Bixler, MPH for its We Care Network program on May 1, 2024. This latest grant brings historical support of the We Care Network by the Rotary Club of Tallahassee to nearly $50,000 over the last 2 decades! The support helps improve access to healthcare for vulnerable low-income, uninsured adults by funding case management services to coordinate donated specialty medical and dental care, and by providing patient assistance for referralrelated prescriptions, transportation, and durable medical supplies. Eligible adults’ incomes are at or below 150% of the Federal Poverty Level, and those eligible do not qualify for any programs or insurance that could pay for the needed health care. Since the program’s inception, over $130 million in documented donated healthcare has been coordinated through the program.
The We Care Network’s mission is to provide a healthcare access safety net for adults who fall through the cracks. Most often, these adults are in low-wage jobs or are out of work altogether and can’t afford health insurance or the high deductibles. By improving access to healthcare, the program can improve health outcomes and the quality of life. Since 1992, the We Care Network has been coordinating specialty medical care for low-income, uninsured adults in Leon, Gadsden, Jefferson, and Wakulla counties. The We Care
This latest grant brings historical support of the We Care Network by the Rotary Club of Tallahassee to nearly $50,000 over the last 2 decades!
Network expanded its program to provide specialty dental services to these same counties in 2003.
All specialty healthcare and dental care coordinated by the We Care Network is donated. Volunteers include 300+ specialist physicians and 40 dentists, several of whom are members of this or other local Rotary clubs.
The We Care Network continues to work with its partners to improve specialty healthcare access and to improve health outcomes, and is grateful the Rotary Club of Tallahassee invests in the community through a variety of initiatives that improve educational outcomes, food insecurities, and healthcare access.

OUR DONORS
THE IMPACT OF YOUR DONATIONS
The Capital Medical Society Foundation’s community of donors strategically help fulfill its mission “to support the charitable efforts of physicians and others, increase access to healthcare, promote education and serve the community’s health needs through innovative projects that are exemplary, affordable and dignified.”
➢ Access to healthcare is increased through gifts to the We Care Network and the We Care Network Endowment Fund. More than $130 million in donated specialty medical and dental care has been provided to low-income, uninsured patients since the program was created in 1992. In fiscal year 2022-23, which ended June 30, 2023, more than $5 million in healthcare was donated. Gifts support patient assistance such as medication, transportation, and durable medical equipment, as well as operational expenses of the program including salaries of the case management team who coordinate the donated care.
➢ To provide incentives to keep medical students trained at the FSU College of Medicine in the Big Bend after completion of their residencies and help meet the growing demand for physicians in Florida, gifts to the CMS Foundation Scholarship Fund provide scholarships to FSU College of Medicine students who have expressed an interest in returning to the Big Bend to practice after completion of their residencies. $61,000 was awarded
in 2023. An additional $1,000 was awarded from The Anesthesiology Associates of Tallahassee Scholarship Fund. The Julia Revell St. Petery, M.D. Scholarship in Pediatrics and The J. Orson Smith, M.D. Scholarship in Internal Medicine were also awarded in 2023.
➢ Gifts to the Capital Medical Society Foundation help provide operational resources for the Capital Medical Society Foundation. In addition, modest grants are awarded to area non-profits whose programs improve access to healthcare for the underserved. In 2023, the CMSF awarded a total of $14,000 in grants to the Big Bend Hospice Foundation for bereavement services, Elder Care Services for in-home services to seniors, Lighthouse of the Big Bend to provide services to the visually impaired, and to Lutheran Social Services of North Florida, Inc. for the KidSafe program.

Please contact Diana Bixler at dbixler@capmed.org or (850) 201-0130 if you are a We Care Network volunteer and you provided volunteer specialty care in the month of April 2024, and your name is omitted.
The We Care Network strongly encourages our volunteer physicians and dentists to send their value of donated services to us. The value of donated services is important for us to share with our funders and the community. In addition, up to five hours, per biennium, of CE credit may be fulfilled by performing pro bono medical and dental services to We Care Network patients, if we have received documentation of value of services. You can send your value of donated services via fax to Diana Bixler at (850) 894-6727 or mail to 1204 Miccosukee Road, Tallahassee, FL, 32308. Thank you!
