CMS WELCOMES MEDICAL STUDENTS AT FSU
REGIONAL
CAMPUS
On June 2, 2025, Dr. John Meade, CMS President-Elect, and Tom Block, CMS Executive Director, joined the incoming third-year medical students at the Florida State University College of Medicine – Tallahassee Regional Campus for their orientation.
During the visit, Mr. Block encouraged students to get involved in organized medicine early in their careers and highlighted the value of joining both the Capital Medical Society (CMS) and the Florida Medical Association (FMA). Dr. Meade emphasized that CMS offers a great opportunity to connect with local physicians and become part of the broader medical community.
Dr. Sandeep Rahangdale, who recently stepped down as dean of the Tallahassee Regional Campus, echoed the importance of CMS in supporting and uniting local physicians. Elaine Geissinger, the campus administrator, also spoke about the campus Food Pantry—an important resource for students that receives support from the CMS Foundation.
Capital Medical Society extends sincere thanks to Dr. Rahangdale and the Tallahassee Regional Campus team for their warm hospitality and sends best wishes to the incoming third-year students as they embark on this next phase of their medical journey.
YOUR PRESIDENT’S PERSPECTIVE ON THE 2025 FMA ANNUAL MEETING
By Russell Cole, M.D., CMS President
Capital Medical Society sent our annual delegation to Orlando July 25-27 to represent the physicians of our region at the Florida Medical Association (FMA) Annual Meeting. This year’s meeting was a surprisingly genial time with a pleasant show of unity on many issues before the House of Delegates.
Capital Medical Society Delegates of the Northwest Florida Caucus: (standing, l-r) Dr. Rohan Joseph, Dr. David Dixon, Dr. Hugh VanLandingham, Dr. Michael Forsthoefel, Dr. Narayanan Krishnamoorthy, (seated, l-r) Dr. Helen Paulson, Dr. John Meade, Dr. Russell Cole, Dr. Amy Neal, and Dr. John Bailey.
It was also a momentous year as our own Dr. Alma Littles was voted President-Elect of the FMA. In 2026, Dr. Littles will be installed as the 150th President of the Florida Medical Association. CMS was glad to endorse Dr. Littles’ candidacy and we are very proud of this latest achievement, and congratulate her on this accomplishment.
In addition to Dr. Littles’ presence on the FMA Board of Governors, CMS boasted representation on 3 of the 4 reference committees, which
review and make recommendations to the House of Delegates. Drs. John Bailey and Brence Sell each chaired a committee, and Dr. Rohan Joseph sat on a third. This means that in 2025 CMS “punched above its weight” in the democratic process by which FMA policy and priority is set.
Included among the many resolutions considered and accepted by the House of Delegates this year were:
• Reaffirmation of support for routine immunization for all children in Florida
• Policy supporting “qualified human” oversight of AI-generated recommendations
• Advocating for greater transparency when seniors are presented options regarding Medicare Advantage plans
The Northwest Florida Caucus discusses the
I want to thank all who gave of their time and efforts to be part of our FMA delegation. Our time and weekends are precious, and I appreciate all who represented us in Orlando. If you are interested in serving as part of the CMS delegation in future years, please let me know via email to cmspresident@capmed.org. Next year’s slate of delegates will be voted on by CMS membership later this fall.
We also were reminded this year that delegation size is allotted based on the number of FMA members within each medical society. The FMA remains a place where rather than just focusing on national hot-button issues, physicians gather and work to help physicians practice medicine in Florida. I ask you to consider again FMA membership to ensure your voice is heard at the table where the FMA’s priorities are shaped so as to advocate effectively for Florida physicians.
To learn more about the FMA’s recommendation and position on the resolutions, visit flmedical.org.
The Executive Directors of the Northwest Florida Caucus: (l-r) Tom Block, Capital Medical Society; Laura Griffin, Escambia County Medical Society; and Michelle Flaat, Emerald Coast Medical Association.
It's Pickleball Time!
The 2nd Annual Capital Medical Society Pickleball Night on June 5th at The Pickle Pad was a total smash hit! Nearly 30 physicians and guests came out to rally, whether they were seasoned pros or just learning how to dink and drop shot.
A huge shout out to our MVP and physician coach, Dr. Ray Dolly, who brought the heat and helped everyone level up their game—no paddles down on his watch!
Thanks to The Pickle Pad for letting us take over the court and to TC Federal Bank for being the ultimate sponsor—your support was definitely on point.
We had a ball, and we’re already paddling up for next year’s match!
We Care Network
On July 18th, the CMS organizations rolled up their sleeves to assist Second Harvest of the Big Bend by packing boxes for seniors. Participants included CMS physician members, family members, and CMS and CMS Foundation staff. This is the second consecutive year that CMS has partnered to assist Second Harvest, which was established in 1982 as the Food Bank of Tallahassee.
I’m excited to share some incredible news with you. Since my last message, the CMS Foundation Board has launched a Board Matching Gift Challenge in honor of the Foundation’s 50th anniversary—a milestone that celebrates five decades of service and impact.
I’m proud to announce that your Board members have stepped up, collectively pledging $25,000 to this challenge. These funds will be used to match every donation dollar-for-dollar, effectively doubling the impact of gifts made by CMS members and community supporters. For instance, a $100 donation becomes a $200 contribution to the Foundation, thanks to the match. Every dollar donated now works twice as hard—up to the next $25,000 raised!
To those who have already contributed—thank you! If you haven’t yet, I invite you to take advantage of this powerful giving opportunity. Whether your passion lies in supporting medical student scholarships, improving patient care through our We Care Network, promoting physician wellness, or another meaningful initiative, your gift will go further than ever.
You can make your donation online at www.capmed.org/donate, scan the QR code at the bottom of this page, or mail a check payable to the CMS Foundation. Every gift—big or small—makes a difference and is directed entirely to the program of your choice.
Over the past 50 years, your support has helped us achieve remarkable outcomes:
• Nearly $1 million awarded in medical student scholarships
• More than $140 million in donated specialty medical and dental care coordinated through our We Care Network
• Ongoing investment in physician well-being through our Physician Wellness Program
As we look ahead, imagine the lives we’ll continue to touch—the students we’ll mentor, the patients we’ll serve, and the colleagues we’ll uplift.
Thank you for your continued dedication to the health and well-being of our community.
With sincere appreciation,
Tom Block Executive Director, Capital Medical Society Foundation
Our mission: To support the charitable efforts of physicians and others, increase access to healthcare, promote education and serve the community’s health needs through innovative projects that are exemplary, affordable and dignified.
CAPITAL MEDICAL SOCIETY FOUNDATION
On July 10, 2025, Tom Block, Executive Director of the Capital Medical Society Foundation, presented a $5,000 grant to Dena Strickland Hendrix, President of the Big Bend Hospice Foundation, and Kenneth Pratt, Esq., Chair-Elect of the Big Bend Hospice Foundation. The grant will support grief counseling services for both youth and adults—offering individual and group sessions, as well as community-based grief education. This important outreach effort aligns with the CMS Foundation’s mission to increase access to health care in our community.
In mid-July, Tom Block, Executive Director of the Capital Medical Society Foundation, presented a $4,000 grant from the CMS Foundation to Elder Care Services. The award was accepted by Nicole Ballas, Chief Development Officer, and Jocelyne Fliger (middle), President and CEO of Elder Care Services. This grant supports the Foundation’s mission to increase access to healthcare services. Elder Care Services’ home-based care program provides essential in-home support for seniors, along with transportation to medical appointments and other health-related services. We are grateful for their continued dedication to ensuring these vital resources remain accessible to seniors in our community.
FINANCIALLY SUPPORTS LOCAL ORGANIZATIONS
The Capital Medical Society Foundation recently presented a $4,000 grant to KidSafe, a life-saving program of Lutheran Social Services of North Florida, Inc. The grant, accepted by members of Lutheran Social Services’ Board and staff, will help expand access to critical child safety seats for families who otherwise couldn’t afford them. In addition to providing new car seats, the funding will support a community education and assistance initiative aimed at improving the safe installation and use of these seats across Tallahassee and Leon County. We’re proud to support KidSafe and the impactful work of Lutheran Social Services in keeping children safe and families supported!
On July 17, 2025, Capital Medical Society Foundation Executive Director Tom Block presented a $4,000 check to Lighthouse of the Big Bend to support the purchase of assistive devices for individuals with vision loss. Tina Torrance, Chief Executive Officer of Lighthouse of the Big Bend, accepted the grant on behalf of the organization. These devices play a vital role in enhancing the quality of life for the visually impaired by promoting greater independence in managing their health and medical needs. We commend the impactful work of Lighthouse of the Big Bend!
