In April, the CMS Alliance (CMSA) hosted their spring fundraising event: Pouring for a Purpose. The event was held at Ology and featured local doctors (Dr. Blake Bauer, Dr. Alyssa Eily,
Dr. Bert Morales, Dr. Jessica Ramos, Dr. Rachel Vanderby, and Dr. Alex Vanderby) swapping their scrubs to serve drinks behind the bar with tips going to charity. We were also able to recognize our 2025 nursing scholarship recipients: Celeste Berrios, Keshauni Johnson, Atomize Sowunmi, and Anna Morgan. There was a food bar with a variety of food and dessert as well as a raffle table with options for everyone!
A MESSAGE FROM THE CMS ALLIANCE
The night was filled with good food, great beer, scholarship presentations to nursing students, and a fun time had by all. All of the proceeds from the event went to Capital City Youth Services (CCYS), a local organization that promotes the healthy development of youth and families. With the help of everyone who attended, CMSA was able to raise and donate over $3,000 to CCYS!

MASTERING SLEEP
CMS members and guests gathered at Goodwood Carriage House on May 13th for a special program titled Mastering Sleep for Physicians: A Science-Based Approach. The presentation was delivered by sleep expert Daniel Baughn, PhD, who traveled from Tampa to deliver the talk. Dr. Baughn emphasized that by prioritizing healthy sleep habits, such as maintaining a consistent sleep routine, optimizing the sleep environment, and managing stress, physicians can enhance their performance, reduce burnout, and improve both their own health and the care they provide to patients.
Dr. Baughn was recommended as a keynote speaker by Dr. Tracey Morse, a provider for the Capital Medical Society Foundation’s Physician Wellness Program, who indicates that poor sleep is one of the most common issues she addresses with clients in her work.
The message delivered by Dr. Baughn is an important one as quality sleep isn’t a luxury for physicians-it’s essential.
Cognitive function, decision-making, and overall performance all depend on adequate rest. The demanding nature of medical work, particularly long shifts, on-call responsibilities, and overnight hours make sleep even more critical. Poor sleep leads to fatigue, impaired focus, and increased risk of medical errors, which can affect both patient outcomes and physician well-being.
Here are a few tips to help master sleep:
1. Go to bed only when sleepy, not just fatigued or tired.
2. If unable to sleep, get out of bed and return to bed only when sleepy.
3. Use the bed and bedroom only for sleep and sex.
4. Wake up at the same time every day, regardless of how much you slept, and get out of bed within 10-15 minutes.
5. Do not nap.
This special event was made possible by the generous support of:
Foundation
The Mastering Sleep program was an outreach of the Capital Medical Society Foundation’s Physician Wellness Program (PWP), which was created in 2017 to take care of the physicians who take care of us. The PWP provides a safe harbor for physicians to receive wellness coaching from providers with PhD’s in psychology and licensed family and marriage therapists to address normal life difficulties in a confidential and
professional environment. Up to six coaching sessions annually are available to Active and Associate members of the Capital Medical Society, and to CMS Member HCA Residents and CMS Member TMH Family Medicine Residents. The program is completely confidential as no insurance is billed and CMS does not receive any information that would identify those who participate in the program.

In 2025, we proudly celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Capital Medical Society Foundation—a milestone made possible through the dedication and generosity of our local physician and medical community.
Over the past five decades, the Foundation has made an extraordinary impact:
• Nearly $1 million awarded in scholarships to deserving medical students
• More than $140 million in donated specialty medical and dental care coordinated through our We Care Network
• Continued support for our local physicians through the Physician Wellness Program
As we look to the future, imagine the lives we can continue to touch—the students we can mentor, the patients we can serve, and the colleagues we can support—together.
As part of our 50th Anniversary Celebration, we invite you to take part in two meaningful ways:
1. Make a Philanthropic Gift:
Support a cause that inspires you—whether it’s medical student scholarships, patient care through the We Care Network, physician wellness, or one of our many other worthwhile causes. You can donate online at www.capmed.org/donate, scan the QR code at the right, or send a check made payable to the CMS Foundation.
2. Join Us on December 4th for Our 50th Anniversary Celebration & Holiday Auction:
To enhance auction proceeds, we welcome donations of memorable experiences:
• Stays at resort, vacation, or beach homes
• Exclusive golf, tennis, hunting, or fishing excursions
• Tickets to concerts, sporting events, or theater performances
• Culinary, Wine or bourbon tastings or other unique experiences
Every contribution—large or small—helps sustain the mission of the Capital Medical Society Foundation. And 100% of your donation will be directed to the program you choose to support.
Help us reach our 2025 fundraising goals—$100,000 through annual giving and $150,000 from our holiday auction. Thank you for your continued commitment to the health and well-being of our community.
Our mission: To support the charitable efforts of physicians and others, increase access to healthcare, promote education and serve the community’s health needs through innovative projects that are exemplary, affordable and dignified.

FLORIDA ASSOCIATION OF FREE AND CHARITABLE CLINICS DAY AT THE CAPITOL: MARCH 26, 2025
The Florida Association of Free and Charitable Clinics (FAFCC) coordinated several of its members and constituents from across the state of Florida on March 26 in an effort to both support the $9.5 million recurring funding for healthcare services and to advocate for an additional $3 million appropriation this year. The additional $3 million appropriation was first approved in 2023 to fund dental and mental health services.
Diana Bixler, MPH, Program Coordinator for the We Care Network, and Tom Block, MS, Executive Director for the Capital Medical Society Foundation met in Tallahassee at the Governor’s

In October 2024, the CMSF integrated Blackbaud’s Donor Cover into the online gift transaction process. This allows donors to pay fees for their eligible transactions so that their entire gift comes to the foundation for the intended designation, with 100% of the gift amount fully tax deductible. Donor Cover is an optional feature and donors can opt out by unchecking the box before completing their gift transaction.
Gifts may be made by credit card or direct debit at https://capmed.org/donate/, or by check. Checks should be made payable to the CMS Foundation. Indicate on the memo line of your check to which designation you would like to give. Bring your check to the CMS Office or mail it: Capital Medical Society Foundation, 1204 Miccosukee Road, Tallahassee, FL 32308.
If you would like to discuss a gift of appreciated securities, an insurance policy, designation of retirement plan assets, estate gift, or multi-year pledge, please contact Tom Block at tblock@capmed.org or (850) 321-1648.
