A MESSAGE FROM 2025 CAPITAL MEDICAL SOCIETY BOARD PRESIDENT

Colleagues,

Happy New Year from the Capital Medical Society Board of Governors! We and the CMS staff wish you a wonderful 2025, and look forward to all that the coming year will hold. As you will see, this year promises to be a busy one. I am honored to serve as your CMS President over this important time.

As I have served on the CMS Board of Governors, I have been struck by the value of the Capital Medical Society to its members and our larger community. Since the mid-1900s, CMS has had core functions that it has performed admirably including social, advocacy, and philanthropy. But at this quarter century point I think we can all agree that medicine and the needs of the physicians are changing quickly. In 2025, we will work to maintain and strengthen the core functions of CMS while adapting in various ways to better serve and communicate with our members.

Here at the beginning of the year I would like to share with you a few things to be watching for in 2025:

Building Community – We plan to host several smaller, more informal gatherings throughout the year at interesting establishments around town. Stay tuned for details.

Social Media – “Like” CMS on Facebook, “Follow” CMS on Instagram, and

“Connect” with CMS on LinkedIn. With these tools we hope to facilitate communication and connectivity within our medical community about happenings in and around our community.

Nuts and Bolts – Updates are underway for the interface of CMS with its members including updates to:

• The CMS Website

• Online Payment and Donation options

• Online Membership Application

• Strategies for recruitment of physicians new to our area

On this last note, I would like to ask for your help by saying, “everything old is new again.” In the digital age, personal engagement and inviting new peers in our practices to join brings strength and new perspectives into our organization. Our membership is at the heart of both how and why we exist.

Mile marker years like 2025 are times that beg for us to both look back and to look forward. I am appreciative of the long and well-established history of physicians working together to further the practice of medicine in our community. I am humbled to be at the helm of that effort over the next year, and I am excited to look ahead and work with the Board of Governors, the CMS staff, and all of you as we move into the next quarter century practicing medicine.

Dr. Cole is a board-certified family medicine physician. He practices with the Tallahassee Memorial Family Medicine Residency Program.

CAPITAL MEDICAL SOCIETY FOUNDATION’S ANNUAL EXTRAVAGANZA: THE HOLIDAY AUCTION

It happens at the polar opposite end of the Christmas holidays, about the time the calendar turns to summer, or perhaps even earlier. But suddenly, it’s there: the first item that will be up for bid come December. Over the next several weeks and months, more items appear, their arrival pace at first a trickle but ultimately a delightful deluge of artwork, kids’ games, tickets to sporting events, bird feeders, restaurant gift cards, jewelry, and much, much more. By the first week of December, the transformation is complete with the CMS Foundation office now a southern depot of Santa’s North Pole workshop.

An army of CMS Alliance members and other volunteers helps transport the auction items from the workshop to the front of the housethe Dunlap Champions Club at FSU--and then spends hours finetuning decorations and display, all to set the stage for our yearly extravaganza: The Capital Medical Society Foundation Holiday Auction.

The 23rd edition of the annual auction was staged on December 5th, as nearly 250 attendees ushered in the holiday season and enjoyed an evening of fun, food, festivity and fundraising, with proceeds from the auction supporting the foundation’s mission of increasing access to healthcare by funding the We Care Network program and scholarships for FSU College of Medicine students. Historically, the We Care Network has coordinated more than $135 million in donated, specialty medical and dental care to low-income, uninsured adult patients in our community, including $5.5 million in fiscal year 2024 alone donated by 340 volunteer providers to 1,821 adult patients. The Foundation’s Scholarship Fund has provided more than $800,000 to students in the Program in Medical Science (the precursor to the FSU

College of Medicine), University of Florida medical students, and FSU College of Medicine students. The majority of those scholarship funds have directly benefited FSU College of Medicine students beginning with those in its inaugural Class of 2005, and continuing in 2024 with $56,500 awarded to 9 current FSU medical students.

Eight of those students were in attendance at this year’s auction, taking a brief study break before diving back into finals preparation, to assist with the auction celebration. A special thanks to future physicians Owen Moore and Kaleigh Wingate for accepting speaker roles at the event and sharing their personal stories about the value and significance of their scholarships. Also sharing a personal testimonial as part of the agenda was Dr. Kenneth Kato, an ophthalmologist at Eye Associates of North Florida and longtime donating provider for the We Care Network. Dr. Kato’s message was one of gratitude, as he expressed both how grateful We Care patients are for the care they receive and how grateful he is to be able to give back as a provider.

Giving back was the theme of the night, as attendees opened their hearts-and their purses

The 2024 CMSF Scholarship recipients in attendance: (l-r) Ashley Archer, Andy Asher, Jason Bowden, Mikalin Huckeba, Owen Moore, Kirstie Walters, Abigail Watson, and Kaleigh Wingate.

and wallets-and helped raise $96,828 after expenses. Auctioneer extraordinaire Hugh Tomlinson once again manned the microphone for the evening, directing traffic, thanking sponsors and expertly announcing the live auction, with a perfect mix of energy, engagement, and encouragement. Live auction items up for bid included the alwayscoveted parking spots at Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare and HCA Florida Capital Hospital, which raised $13,500 among them. Additional items included:

• A Capital Culinary Experience-fine dining at home with friends & family, with a chef-curated experience for 10 donated by Chef Leon Brunson and Scottie and Missy Whiddon

• A Wheel of Fortune presented by Radiology Associates, featuring 500 Florida Lottery Scratch-Off tickets

• A Tallahassee Bicentennial Basket offered by Bert & Tracy Morales

• Dine Around Town! Gift Cards to five of the finest restaurants in Tallahassee thanks to “The Usual Suspects”

• “Silence,” amazing artwork painted and donated by Dr. Charles Manning

• Two tickets to the 2025 TMH Golden Gala, compliments of the TMH Foundation

• And a beautiful Diamond and Pink Sapphire Ring courtesy of Robert’s Jewelry & Design

In addition to the live auction prizes, a plethora of silent auction items were procured and packaged by the CMS Alliance auction committee and countless other donors. These items were bid on by smartphone-toting guests who feverishly worked their fingers and their phones to secure the items of their desire, in the process securing more funding for the CMS Foundation.

A big thanks goes to the auction’s title sponsors, once again EMTeLink - the medical and health

app that provides health records and information services - and Westminster Oaks Active Living Community, which regularly hosts our CMS membership meetings and CMS events. Thank you as well to our Supporting Sponsors: the FSU College of Medicine, Neighborhood Medical Center, and Periodontal Associates of North Florida. And a big shout out to the nearly 50 other corporate sponsors who and numerous individual sponsors who pledged their support to ensure fundraising success!

None of this would be possible without the amazing staff at the Capital Medical Society Foundation, particularly our lead elves Shannon Boyle and Rosalie Carlin, both of whom work happily and tirelessly—and seemingly effortlessly-for MONTHS leading up to the auction to ensure what the famous poem describes as “a happy Christmas to all, and to all a good night.”

The annual auction is not just a good night, it’s a great night, and I encourage you right now to save the date for our biggest and best auction celebration yet on December 4, 2025. This year’s auction will serve as the culmination celebration of the CMS Foundation’s 50-year anniversary.

CMS FOUNDATION CELEBRATES 50TH ANNIVERSARY IN 2025

It’s a brief history lesson on the Capital Medical Society Foundation tab of the CMS website:

Since 1975, a 501(c)(3) charitable organization has operated alongside Capital Medical Society. The Foundation for Medical Care of the Big Bend Area of Florida was incorporated in 1975, and in 1981, the Foundation officially changed to its current name, Capital Medical Society Foundation, Inc.

A quick dive through the office archives doesn’t yield much more detail, though some of you reading this article could probably fill in the blanks on key happenings along a journey that turns 50 this year.

One thing is certain--we’ve come a long way in a half century, as evidenced by this article which appeared in the January, 1976 issue of Cap Scan:

Though the names have changed over the years, the foundation's mission continues to focus on supporting the charitable efforts of physicians and others, increasing access to healthcare, promoting education, and serving the community’s health needs.

As we begin the new year, we should reflect on the incredible work that has been accomplished over the past 50 years, by funding scholarships for medical students, through the amazing We Care Network program, and more recently via our Physician Wellness Program and food pantry at the FSU College of Medicine’s Tallahassee Regional Campus.

We also should acknowledge that there is more to be done, and as we celebrate our success in 2025, let’s also stretch our limits and strive to impact more lives than ever before.

We’ve already moved the auction fundraising needle from $2,800 in 1975 ($15,108.49 today, adjusted for inflation) to approaching six figures at last month’s event. Now, let’s make this year--and this year’s auction--bigger and better than ever for the Capital Medical Society Foundation, Inc. Save the date for December 4, 2025.

Thank you for continuing to play part in the foundation’s success, and in making a difference in our local community!

In October 2024, the CMSF integrated Blackbaud’s Donor Cover into the online gift transaction process. This allows donors to pay fees for their eligible transactions so that their entire gift comes to the foundation for the intended designation, with 100% of the gift amount fully tax deductible. Donor Cover is an optional feature and donors can opt out by unchecking the box before completing their gift transaction.

Gifts may be made by credit card or direct debit at https://capmed.org/donate/, or by check. Checks should be made payable to the CMS Foundation. Indicate on the memo line of your check to which designation you would like to give. Bring your check to the CMS Office or mail it: Capital Medical Society Foundation, 1204 Miccosukee Road, Tallahassee, FL 32308.

THE WE CARE NETWORK EXPANDS QUALIFICATION CRITERIA TO INCLUDE UNDER-INSURED PATIENTS

To continue the We Care Network’s mission of providing a safety net for medically underserved adults in our community, the We Care Network will align with the State of Florida and move forward with changes to broaden the eligibility criteria to now include those who are considered underinsured.

Under-insured patients are individuals who may have insurance, but do not receive coverage for the reason they need to be seen. For example, an individual whose only insurance coverage is Medicare Part A, which covers hospital and inpatient care but not outpatient care. The State of Florida’s Volunteer Health Care Provider Program considers these patients uninsured and, therefore, eligible for the program. With support from the Advisory Committee and the We Care Network staff, these changes will allow the program to continue serving those without other options to receive the healthcare they need.

Additionally, other members of the Florida Association of Free and Charitable Clinics have been able to accept these individuals without a significant increase in caseload. Of course, the rest of the program’s criteria must still be met: income at or below 200% of the Federal Poverty Level in Leon, Gadsden, Jefferson, and Wakulla Counties. We Care Network volunteer providers will continue to be able to honor their commitments at the provider’s discretion. This means that the providers control the number of We Care Network patients they see.

If you have any questions or concerns about this policy change, please do not hesitate to contact H. Avon Doll, Jr., M.D. (Advisory Committee Chair: nephrology3@gmail.com), Diana Bixler, MPH (We Care Network Program Coordinator: dbixler@capmed.org), or Tom Block (CMS Foundation Executive Director: tblock@capmed.org).
