SCHOLARSHIPS By Charles D. "Pedro" Williams, M.D., FACR, FAAP
I’ve been able to live a life I never dreamed of…thanks to scholarships. I was born in 1940 at a time when dad was a sharecropper, mama cooked on a wooden stove, we took our baths in a tin tub, our toilet was an outhouse, and we did not have electricity. After World War II, dad got a job killing hogs at Swift & Company. Since dad could not read or write, my parents wanted me to get an education. My teachers saw something in me that I did not see in myself. Moultrie, Georgia awarded me a fertilizer scholarship from C.O. Smith Quano Company and a hog killing scholarship from Swift & Company and I headed to Mercer University in Macon, Georgia for an undergraduate degree.

He just happened to be on the Ty Cobb Foundation Board and made sure I was the recipient of a Ty Cobb Scholarship. I only tell these stories to emphasize how scholarships can help shape the lives of determined young people. Hopefully, The Charles D. “Pedro” Williams, M.D. Scholarship Endowment can shape the lives of some struggling students. What goes around, can come around. The purpose of life is to have a gift and the meaning of life is to give it back. Pedro believes that scholarships can change lives. Hopefully, others through scholarships can live a life they never dreamed of.
