However, each specialty represented below has helped shape the We Care Network program and improved access to healthcare for the neediest in this community.

It would be remiss to not recognize our referring partners, as well. These primary care provider partners identify patients in our community who could benefit from the services of the We Care Network donating providers. Without our referring partners, the ability for the We Care Network to coordinate needed donated specialty healthcare would not exist. Charles D. Williams, M.D., FACR received a lifetime achievement and service award from the Florida Legislature on January 24, 2022. It was presented by the Florida House Majority Leader, the Honorable Michael Grant.

Dr. Williams previously received a career achievement award from the governor of Georgia, as well as, a career achievement award from his hometown of Moultrie, GA. Dr. Williams is a previous member of American College of Radiology (ACR) Board of Chancellors, a previous vicepresident of ACR, and an ACR Gold Medalist. Care Point Health & Wellness Center announced the naming of their Exam Room #1 after Dr. Thomas L. Hicks. “Dr. Hicks was both a practicing physician and the medical administrator for Patients First, a local health care center. One of the first physicians to care for people living with HIV, Dr. Hicks was actively involved with the inception of Big Bend Cares and later served on the Board of Directors for ten years. ‘…having Exam Room #1 named after Hicks is a very suitable tribute to his work,’” said Stanley Kahn, II, Care Point Health & Wellness Center.

The Capital Medical Society Board of Governors recently renamed its Outstanding Physician Award the Thomas L. Hicks, M.D. Outstanding Physician Award. Dr. Hicks was the first recipient of the award. The award honors physicians who have demonstrated distinguished leadership in organized medicine, community volunteerism, political and governmental activities, clinical excellence, and educational activities; particularly with medical students.

Tallahassee Community College Cherry Hall Alexander African-American History Calendar Honorees included three local physicians. Each year since 2001, TCC has used the calendar to honor African-American individuals committed to making a difference in our community. This year’s theme, Black Health and Wellness, features exceptional community leaders in Leon, Gadsden, Jefferson, and Wakulla counties who work to preserve and promote healthy and holistic living.

(February 2022) Temple O. Robinson, M.D. Dr. Robinson is the Chief Executive Officer of Bond Community Health Center in Tallahassee. Prior to this role, she served as the Chief Medical Officer at Bond, dedicating 18 years of service to the center.

(October 2022) Shairi R. Turner, M.D., M.P.H. - Dr. Turner is the Chief Medical Officer of Crisis Text Line, a nonprofit organization providing 24/7 help, supporting those in crisis. She is also a member of the Research Faculty for Florida State University’s College of Social Work.

(President’s Honoree) A.J. Brickler, III, M.D. - Dr. Brickler is a doctor of Gynecology and Obstetrics at North Florida Women’s Care in Tallahassee. He is board certified in Obstetrics and Gynecology and is a Fellow of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Dr. Brickler has an extensive background in medicine, including being recognized by Consumers Research Council of America as one of “America's Top OB/Gyn's.”

BLACK HISTORY MONTH

HISTORY-MAKER: ALMA LITTLES, M.D. As a part of a series highlighting physicians during Black History Month, the Florida Medical Association (FMA) had the pleasure of interviewing FMA member Alma Littles, M.D., a Boardcertified family medicine physician who has dedicated much of her medical career to improving access to care for underserved patients. That mission is deeply personal for Dr. Littles, a native of rural Gadsden County who became the first in her family to attend college before earning her MD from the University of Florida. She was instrumental in the planning and opening of the Florida State University College of Medicine in the early 2000s and now serves as Senior Associate Dean for Medical Education and Academic Affairs.

Among Dr. Littles’ many accolades is the Elizabeth Blackwell Medal (2019), given annually by the American Medical Women’s Association to a woman physician who has made the most outstanding contributions to the cause of women in medicine. She is a Past President of the Florida Academy of Family Physicians and the Capital Medical Society.

On the rewards of specializing in family medicine: “I chose family medicine because I enjoy the relationship aspects of it and the fact that it allowed me to see patients throughout the lifespan — from newborns to the elderly — and care for the total person. I found that knowing something about my patients’ families and socioeconomic challenges or assets helped me provide better care to them. I didn’t feel limited in who I could have as a patient based on gender, age, or chief complaint. “Family medicine also required me to stay current in all aspects of healthcare, including advocating for my patients before policy and legislative bodies. While I am no longer in direct patient care, I feel that my training as a family physician prepared me well for my role as a medical school administrator and teacher. That aspect of not knowing what is behind the next exam room door, but needing to be ready for anything, comes in very handy in what I do every day overseeing the medical education program for the FSU College of Medicine.”

How family tragedy and a teacher’s words motivated her to study medicine: “My second-grade teacher planted the seed when I didn’t even know what it really meant to be a doctor. I never forgot her words, ‘Alma, when you grow up, I think you should be a doctor.’ Those words started to come to fruition as I grew older and started to see what limited or no access to healthcare looked like. I had multiple close family members suffer unnecessarily from preventable and/or treatable illnesses and saw too many of them succumb to those illnesses. It was the combination of that seed planted

by Mrs. Hazel Jones in second grade, and watching my father die from a heart attack when I was 14, and losing siblings, nieces, nephews, and others to illnesses that made up the inspirational experiences for me to pursue a career 4

in medicine. It didn’t hurt that I fell in love with math and science, which formed the building blocks for me to be successful in school.”

On the importance of African American representation in family medicine: “The mission of the FSU College of Medicine is what enticed me to leave medical practice and join the new medical school as it was being established. Embedded in that mission statement is a focus on training physicians who will care for patients in underserved populations, as well as recruit students from those populations that are underrepresented in medicine. As human beings, we seek care from physicians we feel are competent and caring (words that are also encompassed in the FSU COM’s mission statement), but we also want to see a representation of physicians who we feel will understand us because they’ve ’walked in our shoes’ among those in the profession. That is not to say that every African American patient is looking for an African American physician, but they do want to know that there are African American physicians who are in the profession and providing perspective of their unique characteristics and challenges.

This is true for every group of patients. So, we have an obligation to make sure the physician workforce represents the full diversity of our society so we can provide the best holistic care to all of our patients.”

On the future and continuing to pay it forward: “My goal in everything I do is to give it my all and hope that while I’m there and once I’m gone, it’s better off than when I started. I’ve been blessed to be a part of multiple aspects of a medical career – from starting out as a solo practicing physician, to establishing a group practice to being faculty and director of a family medicine residency program, to establishing a department of family medicine at a brand spanking new medical school, and then serving as the chief academic officer of that school for almost two decades. Parallel to that has been the privilege to serve my community and my profession through participation and leadership in local, state and national boards, committees and organized medicine groups like the Tallahassee Memorial Hospital Board of Directors, Big Bend Hospice BOD, Capital Medical Society President, FMA Board of Directors and Council Chair, FAFP President, AAFP Committee Chair and Delegate, AMA Academic Physicians Section Chair to name a few. So, while it seems that recently I’m being asked when I plan to retire, I’m more frequently asked the ‘what’s next’ question. My response is that retirement is not close to the top of my current to-do list. What I would love is the opportunity to continue to serve as a leader in medical education and do so in a way that allows visionary growth in education, research, and medical practice. I also plan to continue to pay it forward and lend my expertise to pursue continued leadership in organized medicine and in my community.”

2022 CMS AWARD RECIPIENTS

ROBERT D. SNYDER, M.D. – RECIPIENT OF THE 2022 I.B. HARRISON, M.D. HUMANITARIAN AWARD

By Shannon Boyle, CMS Communications and Events Coordinator The Capital Medical Society is pleased to announce Dr. Robert D. Snyder as the recipient of this year's I.B. Harrison, M.D. Humanitarian Award. Each year, this award is presented to a physician who demonstrates dedication to the humanitarian values we associate with the late Dr. I.B. Harrison. These values include: compassion, service, respect, wisdom, and integrity.

Dr. Snyder is a retired, board-certified, general surgeon, originally from Philadelphia. His father was in the Navy, which meant Dr. Snyder and his three siblings lived in many cities in their youth. As a child, Dr. Snyder enjoyed “fixing things.” Little did he know at the time that his enjoyment for “fixing things” would become an almost 40year career in general surgery.

He completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Florida, where he met his future wife, Patti. Patti was Dr. Snyder’s little sister in his fraternity, Pi Kappa Phi. She majored in engineering and would go on to be an early pioneer in computer programming for Eastern Airlines.

This allowed her to financially support Dr. Snyder’s ambition to pursue medicine. In 1973, Dr. Snyder received his medical degree from the University of Miami. He created a rhyme to easily remember this milestone: “M.D. in ’73.”

He completed five years of general surgery residency at the University of Miami Affiliated Hospitals, with his last year serving as Chief Resident. Upon completion of his residency, he and Patti decided to move to Tallahassee.

They were already familiar with the area since some of Dr. Snyder’s family lived in Tallahassee. From 1978 to 1998, Dr. Snyder shared call with the other local surgeons.

In 1998, Dr. Snyder teamed up with Dr. Richard Zorn to form Southeastern Surgical Group. In 2012, Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare (TMH) bought the surgical practice and changed the name to TMH Physician Partners Surgical Specialists.

Dr. Snyder’s schedule was full of patients eager to seek his expert advice and talented surgery skills. He deeply cared for his patients and would unapologetically spend extra CONTINUED ON PAGE 7

CARLOS CAMPO, M.D. – RECIPIENT OF THE 2022 THOMAS L. HICKS, M.D. OUTSTANDING PHYSICIAN AWARD

By Shannon Boyle, CMS Communications and Events Coordinator The Capital Medical Society is pleased to announce Dr. Carlos Campo as the recipient of this year’s Thomas L. Hicks, M.D. Outstanding Physician Award. This award honors a physician who has been a leader within the field of medicine and organized medicine while demonstrating clinical excellence and actively contributing to the education of future medical professionals.

Dr. Campo is board-certified in internal medicine, pulmonary medicine, critical care medicine, and neurocritical care medicine. He was born in San Salvador, El Salvador’s capital and largest city. At a young age, Dr. Campo knew he wanted to help people when he grew up. His formative years were difficult with the passing of his father when Dr. Campo was only six years old. He and his older siblings were raised by their mother. Dr. Campo and his older siblings shared the aspiration to help people. With their mother as their biggest cheerleader, they all took the path of medicine.

His sister is a retired child psychiatrist, and his brother was an infectious disease specialist and now works in pharmaceuticals.

In 1991, Dr. Campo earned his medical degree from the Universidad Autónoma de Centro América in San José, Costa Rica, where he ranked fourth in his class. Throughout his studies, he was most interested in the specialties of internal medicine, pulmonary medicine, and critical medicine because he found them intellectually challenging and respected their acuity. He completed an internal medicine internship and residency at Mount Sinai Medical Center in Miami Beach, Florida, during which he was awarded the American College of Physicians Outstanding Resident of the Year. He then completed a fellowship in pulmonary and critical care at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami in 1998.

Upon completion of his fellowship, he worked as a staff physician at the Camillus Health Concern in Miami. The clinic serves men, women, and children experiencing homelessness in Miami-Dade County. Dr. Campo credits CONTINUED ON PAGE 9

time with his patients to ensure they understood their care plan. Much like the values we associate with the late Dr. I.B. Harrison, Dr. Snyder showed compassion, respect, integrity, and empathy toward each of his patients. Due to his meticulous and patient-centered approach, his breast cancer patient load grew tremendously over the years.

Upon his retirement in 2017, 80% of his patients were being treated for breast cancer. Even though he misses the daily interactions with his patients, he’s still rewarded by catching up with former patients at the local Publix supermarket. As only one example of how much his patients admired him, a former patient made a generous gift to the FSU College of Medicine to establish the Robert D. Snyder, M.D. Award for Outstanding Student in General Surgery with a Focus on Breast Cancer. This award is a lasting tribute to Dr. Snyder’s compassionate care.

Dr. Snyder’s commitment to improving the standard of care, especially for breast cancer, was unmistakable when he, and Sue Fischera, APRN, contributed to the American College of Surgeons landmark study of Sentinel Lymph Node Biopsies (SLNB). This study of early-stage breast cancer patients with no tumor in their sentinel lymph nodes (the first draining node or nodes) who undergo a lumpectomy do not benefit from surgical removal of the remaining lymph nodes in the underarm area, referred to as axillary lymph node dissection (ALND). The study found no difference in cancer recurrence and five-year survival between patients who underwent ALND and those who did not. The removal of SLNB alone significantly lowers the lifetime risk of developing comorbidities, such as lymphedema, sensory loss, or shoulder dysfunction.

To sum up Dr. Snyder’s general surgery career, his friend, former partner, and previous recipient of the I.B. Harrison, M.D. Humanitarian Award, Dr. Richard Zorn said it best: “Robert and I came to Tallahassee in the same year (1978) as friendly competitors. Over the years we became professional partners and very close personal friends. Bob's dedication to his patients, especially his breast cancer patients, was phenomenal. He used to drive the office staff crazy going over each detail of the disease and their upcoming care with each new breast cancer patient. He wasn't concerned with the office schedule. They didn't leave until every one of their questions were answered.

I still have former patients of his come up to me and compliment him and our office staff on the care they received. Robert and Patti were great assets to Tallahassee, and this honor is greatly deserved.”

Dr. Snyder was another physician who was fortunate to befriend the late Dr. I.B. Harrison. He fondly remembers him as a kind, gentle, and fair-minded physician.

Dr. Snyder was involved in many aspects of the medical community. He was a board member of the Tallahassee

Physicians Association, which launched HealthPlan Southeast in the late 1980s. He was a founding member of the surgery department at TMH. He served as Chair of the TMH Medical Staff and Chair of the TMH Department of Surgery. He also served on several TMH committees including the Credentials Committee, Surgical Case Review Committee, and Executive Committee. In addition, he was a generous volunteer physician in the Capital Medical Society Foundation’s We Care Network since its inception.

His passion to mentor future physicians was evident in his work with TMH and the FSU College of Medicine. He was an attending and assistant professor of surgery for the FSU College of Medicine, the FSU College of Medicine General Surgery Residency Program at TMH, and the TMH Family Medicine Residency Program. “Dr. Snyder helped me see how being a ‘workaholic’ for the benefit of others could bring even more joy and meaning to our calling as physicians. While the hours were long and the breaks were few and short, I learned how to efficiently provide competent and compassionate care to the patients who entrusted me with their health every day,” said Dr. Alma Littles, who was trained by Dr. Snyder during her residency. “I am blessed to have learned from one of the best.”

With his Catholic faith, Dr. Snyder served as Chair of the School Advisory Council at Trinity Catholic School, where his children attended school, and was instrumental in the design of the school’s media center. Currently, he is an active member of Good Shepherd Catholic Church.

In addition to his faith, he is also a supporter of the arts, particularly with Young Actors Theatre (YAT). All of his daughters were students at YAT. Dr. Snyder was married to Patti, his college sweetheart, for 52 years. After retirement, Dr. Snyder became Patti’s primary caretaker as she fought a decades-long battle with Multiple Sclerosis. Sadly, Patti passed away in November 2021. He is a devoted father to their six daughters: Kristi, Katie, Lindsey, Theresa, Susanna, and Kelly, who tragically passed away in 2006. Kristi and Katie reside in Tallahassee, while Lindsey, Theresa, and Susanna reside in Denver. He is also a proud grandfather to nine grandchildren: Eli, Jude, Jonah, Theo, Asher, Davis, Kelly Claire, Sayler, and Leyna.

When Dr. Snyder reminisces on his life, he is most proud of being a loving husband, raising six wonderful daughters, and providing quality and compassionate care to the community. For decades, his life was physically and mentally taxing, but now, he relishes the quiet moments on his back porch soaking in daily sunsets.

On behalf of all those associated with the Capital Medical Society, congratulations to Dr. Robert D. Snyder. He is a true humanitarian in every sense of the word.

I.B. “BUD” HARRISON, M.D.

WHO WAS I.B. “BUD” HARRISON, M.D.?

By J. Orson Smith, M.D. Again this year, we will honor a recipient of the I.B. Harrison, M.D. Humanitarian Award. I was asked to tell the many new doctors in this community who Dr. I.B. “Bud” Harrison was. He remains the icon in this community for an intelligent, competent, and compassionate physician. He was also a leader and role model to many family practice physicians.

Bud was 8 years older than I, but we were both Cardiology Fellows under Dr. Bruce Logue at Emory. Dr. Logue was our role model. In 1961, while serving in the army at Fort McPherson and attending a Cardiology conference at Grady Hospital, Bud approached Bruce to ask if he knew anyone that might join him and Fred Butler in medical practice. Bruce pointed to me and said, “Orson will.” I always did what Dr. Logue told me to do.

The other mechanic said, “Well if it is, he ain’t no good.” Time certainly proved this to be wrong!

In the early 1970’s, Bud had a catfish fin him in the knee and he developed a pseudomonas infection, which led to the need for a Charnley fusion. This made night call very difficult and he took a position as Chief of Medical Affairs at Tallahassee Memorial Hospital. This led to the most important contribution of his life, namely becoming a teacher in the Residency Program.

The following is an excerpt from Dr. Whit Oliver’s acceptance speech as he was awarded the 2010 I.B. Harrison, M.D. Humanitarian Award. He shared wonderful insight into Bud’s “make-up.”

“Dr. Harrison was loved by most Dr. I.B. “Bud” and respected by all who knew him.

his humble, kind, and honest approach in medicine to his years of working with the homeless population in Miami. After almost four years of practicing at the homeless clinic, he yearned to practice pulmonary medicine full-time. And so his search began to find a practice in need of a pulmonologist.

Program at TMH, an Assistant Professor at FSU COM General Surgery Residency Program at TMH, and on Clerkship Faculty at the FSU COM Tallahassee Regional Campus. Furthermore, he has published several abstracts and articles in journals and given numerous lectures in Florida.

In 2001, Dr. Campo arrived at the Tallahassee International Airport and was greeted by Dr. John Thabes with Tallahassee Pulmonary Clinic. He was thoroughly impressed by the practice and Tallahassee, and ultimately joined Tallahassee Pulmonary Clinic in 2002. In recent years, the practice changed its name and affiliated with Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare (TMH): TMH Physician Partners – Pulmonary, Critical Care, and Sleep. At the start of his career with the pulmonary clinic, Dr. Campo volunteered on weeknights at Neighborhood Health Services, an indigent care clinic in Tallahassee. His early aspirations to help people has never wavered. He personifies the words of Winston Churchill, “We make a living by what we get, we make a life by what we give.”

Dr. Campo has been involved in many facets of the medical community. He currently serves on the TMH Board of Directors, as Medical Director for TMH Critical Care and Respiratory Services, and as Chair of the TMH ICU Care Review Committee. He previously served as Chair of the TMH Medical Staff, as Chair of TMH Infection Control, as Medical Director for TMH Case Management, as Medical Director for Select Specialty Hospital, as a member of the TMH Medical Executive Committee, and as Chair of the Membership Committee for the Southeast Thoracic Association.

Additionally, he has been a generous volunteer physician in the Capital Medical Society Foundation's We Care Network.

When the COVID-19 pandemic infiltrated the United States in 2020, our medical community searched for answers. Due to the unknowns with the virus, healthcare personnel joined efforts to develop protocols to treat patients. Dr. Campo analyzed protocols and techniques that were successful in other countries and states and worked closely with the TMH administration and medical staff to implement them in our community. Dr. Campo, modest and noble, is quick to credit the teams of physicians, nurses, pharmacists, technicians, respiratory therapists, and environmental services workers with rising to the challenge together. As director of the ICU at TMH, Dr. Campo spearheaded strategic steps to ensure the medical team had the protective supplies they needed to treat COVID-19 patients, did a tremendous amount of research on the virus to keep the medical team informed, brainstormed techniques to utilize one ventilator for two patients when there was a ventilator shortage, while also trying to keep morale up with the healthcare team in the ICU. “He has been a shining light and a steady light in keeping the hospital staff up-to-date on the most recent safety protocols, treatment protocols, and guidelines in caring for COVID patients,” said Dr. David Huang, Dr. Campo’s friend and colleague. “Without his leadership in responding to the COVID pandemic, our community would definitely be in trouble.”

In addition to his clinical responsibilities, Dr. Campo regularly supervises residents in their rotations through the ICU at TMH. He is also a Clinical Assistant Professor at the Florida State University College of Medicine (FSU COM) Internal Medicine Residency

He is a loving husband to his wife of almost 25 years, Kim, and a proud father to three children, Sebastian, Patrick, and Bella. Sebastian is a junior at the University of Florida, Patrick is a sophomore at the University of Georgia, and Bella is a freshman at the University of Pittsburgh. Dr. Campo has always made it a priority to be involved in his children’s lives. When they were younger, he was at their sporting and school events. Now that they are all in college, he travels to spend time with them and attend sporting and school events at each of their universities. In his own words, “I can be replaced at work, but I can’t be replaced as a father.”

In his spare time, Dr. Campo enjoys spending time with his family, fishing, cooking, and walking their dog, Monti, a Rottweiler/Shepherd mix.

On behalf of all those associated with the Capital Medical Society, congratulations to Dr. Carlos Campo.

He certainly exemplifies what we consider to be the qualities of an outstanding leader and physician.

The Capital Medical Society is pleased to announce the Outstanding Physician Award has been renamed to the Thomas L. Hicks, M.D. Outstanding Physician Award.

The late Dr. Hicks was the first recipient of the Outstanding Physician Award, in 2006, for his many years of leadership in organized medicine.

NATIONAL DOCTORS' DAY

WHAT IS DOCTORS’ DAY? WHY WAS IT FOUNDED? The first Doctors' Day observance was held on March 30, 1933, by the Barrow County Alliance, in Winder, Georgia. The idea of setting aside a day to honor physicians was conceived by Eudora Brown Almond, wife of Dr. Charles B. Almond, and the recognition occurred on the anniversary of the first administration of anesthesia by Dr. Crawford W. Long in Barrow County, Georgia, in 1842. The Alliance immediately adopted the following resolution: "WHEREAS the Alliance to the Barrow County Medical Society wishes to pay lasting tribute to the Doctors, therefore, be it RESOLVED by the Alliance of the Barrow County Medical Society that March 30, the day that famous Georgian Dr. Crawford W. Long first used ether anesthesia in surgery, be adopted as 'Doctors Day,' the object to be the well-being and honor of the profession, its observance demanding some act of kindness, gift or tribute in remembrance of the Doctors."

This first observance included the mailing of cards to physicians and their wives, flowers placed on graves of deceased doctors, including Dr. Long, and a formal dinner. After the Barrow County Alliance adopted its resolution to pay tribute to the doctors, the plan was presented and passed by the Georgia State Medical Alliance in 1934 in Augusta, Georgia. The resolution was introduced to the Women's Alliance of the Southern Medical Association at its 29th annual meeting held in St. Louis, Missouri in 1935. Since then, Doctors' Day has become an integral part of and synonymous with, the Southern Medical Association Alliance.

Through the years, the red carnation has been used as the symbol of Doctors' Day. On March 30, 1958, the United States House of Representatives adopted a Resolution Commemorating Doctors’ Day. In 1990, Congressmen Mike Parker (D-Mississippi) and G. V. Montgomery (D-Mississippi) and Senator Thad Cochran (R-Mississippi) introduced legislation in the House and Senate to establish a national Doctors' Day. by the US Senate and the House, on October 30, 1990, President George Bush signed S.J. RES. #366 (which became Public Law 101-473) designating March 30 as "National Doctors' Day": Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled, That – 1. March 30, 1991, is designated as "National Doctors' Day"; and 2. The President is authorized and requested to issue a proclamation calling on the people of the United States to observe the day with appropriate programs, ceremonies and activities.

Doctors’ Day is the result of dedicated Alliance members across the country. The enactment of this law enables the citizens of the United States to publicly show appreciation for the role of physicians in caring for the sick, advancing medical knowledge, and promoting good health.

SOCIAL WORK MONTH

RECOGNIZING SOCIAL WORK AS A SERVICE TO OURSELVES AND TO OTHERS

By Diana Bixler, We Care Network Program Coordinator Each year, during the month of March, we take a moment to focus on the profession of social work, those who are involved with putting in the work every day, and what it means to be a part of this community in service to others. Our social work role within the health and human sector is to provide services that positively influence overall health status and the health outcomes of the population we serve. A strong, highly motivated, and incredibly skilled case management team operates the We Care Network program. It is important to take this time to recognize each member of this team and highlight what they bring to the program. It is a collaborative and collective effort. Each individual is important. Without teamwork within the realm of social work, it would be a constant, uphill battle to try to help the patients that we serve in Leon, Gadsden, Wakulla, and Jefferson Counties.

Malika Nixon-Williams is our Wakulla County Case Manager. Malika came to the We Care Network in 2019. She is calm, levelheaded, thorough, and makes sound decisions. She shows up ready to work each day, understanding the job that is to be done and the scope of our work.

Anabel Sanchez-Senofonte is our Gadsden County Case Manager. She joined the We Care Network in 2021 as the Case Management Associate. Six months later, she transitioned to a case manager position. With her knowledge of the Spanish language, she is an invaluable asset to the Limited English Proficiency (LEP) population we serve – primarily residing in Gadsden County.

Meisha Fennell is our Case Management Associate.

Although she has only been with the We Care Network program since late 2021, it feels as though she has been with us for much longer. She has a background in medical informatics, which provides the necessary skills for her position.

HALF A YEAR HALF-WAY AROUND THE WORLD

By Michelle Miller, M.D. Hi everyone!!! Time sure does fly when you are having fun. I can’t believe I have been in New Zealand for seven months (with six more to go.) I would recommend anyone having major burnout to consider coming here - or consider locums somewhere else. Just in my short time here, I feel better, and I doubt I will fully retire any time soon if my health continues to be stable. Yes, I will be coming back to the States. Immigration denied my visa extension due to my Multiple Sclerosis, so in order to not be banned for life, my family will be heading back in July. We may try to visit Australia for a week or so prior to coming back, depending on the pandemic situation at that time.

During my time here, a lot has changed. I started with little to no COVID-19 in the country and not having to wear masks in the office, to getting put in lock-down due to the delta variant and wearing N-95s daily and 70% of visits by video or telephone for a few weeks, to now a combination of telemedicine and in-person visits but still wearing N-95s daily. I now have more than just a few patients refusing the COVID-19 jab or asking for exemptions, but the local community has > 90% vaccination rates (age 12+). The country has moved from only having the Pfizer vaccine to also the AstraZeneca vaccine, and now giving boosters to everyone 18+. We luckily haven’t seen much of the Omicron variant, but everyone is on edge awaiting to see it come into the community. Luckily, COVID-19 passes (proof of immunization) are mandatory at most establishments and the COVID-19 tracker app makes contact tracing so much easier.

My family moved out of an apartment downtown (small town with no traffic lights so not too busy) to a nice house that is a 15-minute walk from the office, so with going home at lunch, I am walking an hour most days. We were walking to nearby restaurants, but I must admit that we really miss the food back home - the food here is very bland with lots of french fries (or chips as they call it) for sides. Therefore, my husband has become a great cook at home.

I have gotten more comfortable with finding information on the New Zealand formulary or Pathways and calling specialists to get approvals for imaging or medications.

It is no longer strange to hear “Michelle” instead of “Dr. Miller.” The patients are a joy for the most part - usually not entitled and understand that their appointment is

only 15 minutes so they will let me know that they plan on making future appointments for anything that we don’t cover. They also apologize if they are late! Also, new to me, any patient over 79 wanting to renew their license must have a visit with a GP to review their conditions, medications, vision, strength, balance, and memory to determine if they are safe to drive or need more assessments or restrictions. Also new to me, if a patient dies, you must visit their body to confirm death, and if for cremation, it must be within 24 hours to make sure no medical equipment (specifically pacemakers) that need to be known to the funeral home.

Jargon that I’ve learned while here: glandular fever (mono), grommets (tympanostomy tubes), giddy (dizzy), jabs (vaccines), seeing extra ‘o’s added to words like oedema, oesophagus, etc. I’ve also seen a lot of melanomas (very common due to low ozone). I don’t see nearly as much Vitamin D deficiency - likely due to it being a lab test that isn’t covered, so most patients don’t want to pay to see their level. I see a lot of GI disturbances - likely from all the milk that people add to their 6+ cups of teas a day.

So far, my family has really enjoyed our stay here. The country is beautiful, and most of the people are very nice.

We have taken some weekend trips to explore a little of the country. However, we mostly rest at home with nearby hikes and are enjoying living in a small town. During these treks, it’s not unusual to see people not wearing shoes (my toddler points this out every time we walk to the local park). I don’t bring my work home with me - it is frowned upon, and I have an excuse that it would cost the group to pay me overtime. I have plenty of breaks built into my schedule to finish paperwork or take breaks (most of which I don’t work through).

When I return to the States, I hope to keep up a good worklife balance. I plan to start with setting boundaries to keep work at work and learn to delegate. It’s amazing what the nurses can do here that I don’t have to worry about besides sending in medications based on standing orders for nursing visits. It’s unlikely most of the life-balance measures can be implemented in the States. Teatime and paperwork breaks would likely be frowned upon. However, I plan to make small changes, such as saying no to overbooking and not replying with free medical advice when a patient should make a visit instead of sending messages on the EHR. I’ve been able to live a life I never dreamed of…thanks to scholarships.

I was born in 1940 at a time when dad was a sharecropper, mama cooked on a wooden stove, we took our baths in a tin tub, our toilet was an outhouse, and we did not have electricity. After World War II, dad got a job killing hogs at Swift & Company.

Since dad could not read or write, my parents wanted me to get an education.

My teachers saw something in me that I did not see in myself. Moultrie, Georgia awarded me a fertilizer scholarship from C.O. Smith Quano Company and a hog killing scholarship from Swift & Company and I headed to Mercer University in Macon, Georgia for an undergraduate degree.

I only tell these stories to emphasize how scholarships can help shape the lives of determined young people. The purpose of life is to have a gift and the meaning of life is to give it back.

Pedro believes that scholarships can change lives. Hopefully, others through scholarships can live a life they never dreamed of.

A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT Happy New Year!

Thank you all for the honor of serving as President of the Capital Medical Society Alliance for 2022. Thank you to each member who has agreed to serve on the Executive Board or as a Committee Chairperson. Thank you all for your membership, encouragement, and support as we begin a new year. I am grateful for the friendships and connections that CMSA has brought me and my family over the past 5 ½ years, and I pray that each member feels like a valued part of this organization as we support the healthcare community together.

While COVID-19 changed the way we communicated and gathered throughout 2020 and 2021, CMSA never lost sight of our commitment to serving the healthcare community in meaningful ways. Each month, we saw our members helping vulnerable populations in our region in many capacities, including volunteering with the COVID-19 vaccination clinic, working with the Panhandle Education Consortium to help underserved students, and finding new opportunities to honor our healthcare heroes. We ended the year celebrating the success of CMSA’s first Holiday Card Fundraiser, which enabled us to increase our charitable donations and even underwrite the cost of a Respite Room for nurses and doctors at TMH’s Northeast Emergency Room location. We look forward to announcing the dedication day for this room as soon as possible.

We have started 2022 with the goal of staying focused on our mission statement—to remain committed to health, education, wellness, and community service. We began with a beautiful in-person/Zoom officer installation in January, where we honored our outgoing officers, heard updates from FMAA, CMS, and CMS

Foundation, and discussed our programming for the year. We plan to bring back some in-person favorites, including a visit to our 2022 community philanthropy, Lee’s Place, in February and our wine tasting event in the fall. We will also leave room to help meet other healthcare-related needs as they arise. Please feel free to contact our 2022 Executive Board and/or Committee Members with any ideas throughout the year.

By Charles D. Williams, M.D., FACR, FAAP (“Pedro”) Hardships sometimes are a blessing and we don’t know it at the time.

The good life sometimes deprives us of special moments and we also don’t recognize it at the time.

It helps us to look back to our past so we will know how far we have come and it helps our younguns and our family to know where we have been. Winston Churchill once said that the farther backward you can look, the farther forward you’re likely to see.

When I go walking in my mind down the country road of memories, I often remember the hard times on the farm. It has been said that you’d go to sleep with the chickens, git up with the rooster, work like a horse, eat like a pig, and git treated like a dog. Someone once asked a farm boy when he got drafted how was the army. He replied, “It’s real good. The food’s good, the work’s easy, and best of all, they let you sleep late.”

Hard times didn’t keep farm folks from being happy. The happiest folks don’t seem to be hunting something to make them happy. The government can’t make you happy or better off if you don’t want to be. The government once sent somebody down to south Georgia to teach a farmer to farm better. He told ‘em, “I don’t need your help. I ain’t farming now nearly as good as I know how.”

Even though times were hard on the farm, we had some conveniences such as fresh milk. We kept our milk fresh by keeping it in the cow. If our milk had been any fresher, it would have been grass.

We didn’t have central heat, but we would huddle around the fireplace to keep warm. This brought us closer together and allowed us to share our lives, our dreams, and our thoughts. Mama would knit and tell stories. Dad would whittle and Pedro would do his homework. Keeping warm kept us in the same room and we all listened to Mama.

Mama once said, “Pedro, when you git grown and

if sickness overtakes you and you ain’t got a penny to your name, there’s a Mama and Daddy waitin’ for you by the fire at home.” She said that Pedro was special and that each one of us was unique just like everybody else in this world. She said that we all have an equal chance to be unequal. Often Daddy would just keep quiet ‘cause he felt flies couldn’t enter a closed mouth. He knew that even though the rooster would sometimes crow that it was actually the hen that delivered the goods.

One night when the fire had died down and it had gotten late, Mama asked Pedro to say his good night prayers. Pedro bowed his head and said, “Dear Lord, bless Mama and Daddy and make them happy if they’re not too old for that sort of thing.”

When folks got better off and got their central heat, their phones, and their personal TV’s, they all headed off to their private rooms and their private worlds. The family was never so close again as when they huddled together around the fire to keep warm.

It seems that hardships brought us closer together and that conveniences and the good life have spread us apart.

Someday I may just throw another log on the fire, turn off the central heat, turn off the TV, unplug the phone, and invite my Dad, my sisters, and my family back home again to git warm one more time.

CMS FOUNDATION RECEIVES FUNDS FROM MEDICAL COMMUNITY

DERMATOLOGY ASSOCIATES OF TALLAHASSEE MAKES DONATION, IN HONOR OF DR. MEREDITH MCKINNEY, TO THE WE CARE NETWORK On December 20, 2021, Dr. Armand Cognetta presented a $5,000 check to the Capital Medical Society Foundation President Dr. John P. Mahoney.

The gift was presented in honor of Dr. Meredith McKinney upon his retirement on December 15, 2021 from the Dermatology Associates of Tallahassee after twenty-one years in their practice. Dr. McKinney’s commitment to the We Care Network program spans decades.

“He has worked with me for over twenty years,” said Dr. Armand Cognetta. “It is such a pleasure to honor him in front of his colleagues with this gift. He has provided treatment to many, many We Care Network patients over the years.” The We Care Network program is celebrating its thirty-year anniversary in 2022. Dr. Meredith McKinney has been an integral part of the We Care Network as a donating physician.

Meredith McKinney, M.D. graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana in 1965 and Indiana University Medical School in Indianapolis in 1968. Between 1968 and 1974 he completed a four-year general surgery residency at Shands Hospital at the University of Florida in Gainesville and spent two years with the Special Forces at Fort Bragg, NC. He then fulfilled a two-year plastic surgery residency at Indiana University and specialty hand surgery training at the Kleinert Kutz Hand Care Center in Louisville, KY. From July 1976 to October 1999, he provided a full spectrum of cosmetic and reconstructive plastic surgery to patients in the Tallahassee and surrounding communities. Since that time, he has restricted his practice to skin cancer reconstruction. Dr. McKinney worked closely and exclusively with Dr. Cognetta at Dermatology Associates to provide patients with the best possible care.

The Impact of Private Support: The Capital Medical Society Foundation’s community of donors strategically help fulfill its mission “to support the charitable efforts of physicians and others, increase access to healthcare, promote education and serve the community’s health needs through innovative projects that are exemplary, affordable and dignified.” ➢ Access to healthcare is increased through gifts to the We Care Network and the We Care Network Endowment Fund. More than $120.7 million in donated specialty medical and dental care has been provided to low-income, uninsured patients since the program was created in 1992. In fiscal year 2020-21, which ended June 30, 2021, more than $8.4 million in healthcare was donated. Gifts support the operational expenses of the program including salaries and benefits of the case management team who coordinate the donated care. ➢ To provide incentives to keep medical students trained at the FSU College of Medicine in the Big Bend after completion of their residencies and help meet the growing demand for physicians in Florida, gifts to the CMS Foundation Scholarship Fund provide scholarships to FSU College of Medicine students who have expressed an interest in returning to the Big Bend to practice after completion of their residencies. $44,000 was awarded in 2021. In addition, modest grants are awarded to area non-profits whose programs improve access to healthcare for the underserved. In 2021, the CMSF awarded a total of $15,000 in grants to Elder Care Services for their In-Home Services Program, the Big Bend Hospice Foundation for bereavement services, and to Lighthouse of the Big Bend for aids for the visually-impaired.

Gifts to Honor and In Memoriam: You can make a gift to the CMS Foundation in memory of someone who has passed away or in honor of someone, such as a fellow physician, you hold in high esteem or has taken care of you or your family. The CMS Foundation will send an acknowledgement letter to those you memorialize and honor.
