“The Spring/Summer trends will be similar to 2020 but with new updates; so we’ll see different takes on the traditional French manicure, negative space, geometric or animal print designs.

“The shades will be bright and bold, like oranges, blues and bright pinks but muted nudes will also shine. “As nails are now seen as an extension of the jewellery we wear, nail art is starting to complement our favourite rings and bracelets. A key trend for spring is what I call ‘sophisticated metallics’ – small touches of silver being added as a final touch. Finally, tortoiseshell was huge in 2020 and it’s definitely here to stay for 2021, but we’ll see it being incorporated in more subtle ways, such as a French manicure.”

Explain to the client how they can avoid excess tangling by brushing the hair often, and using a gentle approach by starting from the ends and brushing in a downward motion, working their way up to the top.

Finally, advise them to pat hair dry with a towel before allowing it to air dry or using a hairdryer on a low heat setting.

Styling Minimal use of heated appliances is advised, but if it is necessary, clients should only use the lowest heat setting, and should not exceed 180 degrees centigrade. Also, styling products that contain alcohol should not be used.

To prevent drying and tangling, ensure clients use a small amount of leave-in conditioner regularly.

Travelling Be sure to tell your clients to stay away from chlorinated water, seawater, suncream/ lotions and self-tan!

S TAY POSITIVE For Joe Hemmings of Bloggs, Bristol, it’s important to stay focused and positive for 2021.

“It’s important to stay positive and engage with your team to keep them motivated; try not to just look at the doom and gloom or bury your head in the sand. Transparent communication with your team about what’s going on in the business are key - be honest about what everyone needs to do to keep things moving

forward. If everyone’s operating with the same goal it’s more likely you’ll achieve it.

“Also, it’s massively important that you know and understand your numbers! Don’t be tempted to cut back too much as you will still need to evolve the business; look at adding value to services and charge more for your skills. Do not discount. Control your wage bill and look at retraining your team if you are lacking a certain skill set or consider doubling up on job roles to limit costs, where possible,” says Joe. @bloggssalons

Be consistent and educate your team – invest in them and they will perform.

Maximise your revenue per client; this can be done by encouraging them to book in for a blow dry, offering a toner between services, or upgrading them to a luxury cut. All of these offers can increase your daily sales without finding new clients.

Understand your cash flow.

Your outgoings will most likely have increased due to PPE so increase your prices, even if it’s £3 more per cut.

Having a clear P&L (Profit and Loss) report can save your business and give you a clear understanding of what you need to turnover or make profit.

Stock products at different price points; this way you ensure you’re catering to a low, medium and high budget.
