Scaling Success: How Large 3PLs Excel

In Fulfillment During

Peak Demand

In the ever-evolving world of e-commerce, success hinges on managing surges in demand without compromising service quality. This is where large, professional Third-Party Logistics (3PL) providers shine. Their capacity to scale resources e ectively during peak demand periods proves to be a game-changer, o ering businesses many benefits that drive customer satisfaction and business growth.

Large 3PLs possess the infrastructure and expertise to accommodate heightened order volumes seamlessly. When demand spikes, they can swiftly ramp up their workforce, warehouse space, and technology systems to ensure smooth operations. This agility prevents bottlenecks, reduces shipping delays, and preserves customer loyalty.

Furthermore, their expansive network of distribution centers, carriers, and couriers ensures that shipments reach customers promptly, even during peak times. Their ability to leverage these resources reduces the risk of overburdened sta , overstocked facilities, and also minimizes shipping costs.

From a financial perspective, partnering with a large 3PL proves cost-e ective. Rather than investing in temporary resources to manage peaks, businesses can leverage the 3PL's established systems and workforce, optimizing e ciency without incurring unnecessary expenses.

The ability to scale resources during peak demand cements the significance of large, professional 3PLs in the fulfillment landscape. Their operational flexibility, extensive networks, and cost-e cient solutions position businesses for success, ensuring that customer satisfaction remains high and growth prospects stay bright, even in the face of demanding market dynamics.

CASE STUDY: Agrifoods

Customer Overview

Agrifoods, a leader in the dairy manufacturing industry for over 100 years, is renowned for its quality and innovation. With seven distinct brands, Agrifoods o ers dairy and non-dairy products, including milk (lactose-free and vegan options), cheese, butter, yogurt, and fruit juices. Operating on both the West and East Coasts, Agrifoods is a significant player in the food and beverage sector.

Nature of the Business

In early 2024, Speedee Transport (a division of Canada Cartage) was awarded the role of primary carrier for Agrifoods’ outbound shipments within the West Coast, Prairie provinces, and Central Canada, supporting three of their key brands. This partnership encompasses transportation services for shipments to major Distribution Centres (DCs) such as Walmart, Pattison Food Group, and Sobeys, where reliable On-Time Delivery (OTD) performance is non-negotiable. In addition to transportation, Speedee provides warehousing and storage solutions to ensure seamless inventory management.

Customer Needs and Solutions

Agrifoods faced several operational challenges, including:

• The need for open and smooth communication between teams.

• Freight cost management, including fines and claims.

• Enhanced visibility and tracking of shipments.

To address these issues, Speedee assigned a dedicated operations team to streamline communication through emails, phone calls, and the Microsoft TEAMS application. Agrifoods’ team has also leveraged Speedee’s customer portal for order entry, shipment tracking, and document management. This portal has significantly reduced administrative burdens, giving the customer real-time visibility into pick-ups and deliveries. Additionally, our warehousing team sends daily inventory reports, ensuring that Agrifoods has complete transparency in its inventory positioning.

The scale of this collaboration is substantial, requiring expert handling of high-volume shipments to DCs where fines can be assessed for late deliveries. Our zero-dollar fine delivery policy and deep knowledge of specific DC receiving procedures have proven invaluable, enabling us to maintain a stellar OTD performance of 98.91%.

Customer Quote

“Speedee has been a game-changer for our logistics operations. Their zero-dollar fine delivery policy and high OTD performance have saved us significant costs and boosted our scorecard performance with key retail partners. The dedicated team and easy-to-use portal have made communication and tracking seamless. We look forward to growing our partnership.”
