Agawam Council Annual Report - 2015

2015 ANNUAL REPORT

Director’s Report As the fifth director of Camp Agawam, I often reflect upon our nearly 100-year history. In 1919, “Governor” Mason had a vision of “a simple outdoor setting that would provide strong adult role models, where boys could develop character, leadership, independence, and a sense of teamwork and belonging.” The world has changed in many ways since 1919, but the core values and mission of Camp Agawam remain the same and, if anything, are more relevant and important to the healthy development of boys in 2016. Put simply, Camp Agawam is a place where boys are able to escape the constant buzz of a world filled with electronic stimulus and just be boys. They develop real and lasting relationships with both peers and adults. They grow emotionally and physically in a beautiful and rustic outdoor setting. They may even do something crazy like catch a fish, climb a mountain, or learn to build a fire. Were “the Governor” to visit Camp Agawam today, he would see many new and surprising things. For example, Forbes Field has changed from a baseball field to a soccer field. Our dining hall now has refrigeration, and we no longer need to cut ice from Crescent Lake each winter. There are new activities such as high ropes, lacrosse, and windsurfing. However, “the Governor” would also see many, many things that would appear familiar to him – perhaps even just as he left them. Boys gather for Council Fire every Saturday night. Wams compete with Ags with spirit and sportsmanship. Staff assign Katiaki goals to boys each week. He would see mentoring, teaching, and friendship. He would smell pine trees and hear laughter. He would see that Agawam is alive and well and positively impacting boys in the same way that it did nearly 100 years ago. With that said, I feel that “the Governor” would be most impressed by one of Agawam’s greatest strengths, the Agawam community: all of YOU who keep the spirit of Agawam alive through your loyalty, service, and dedication. For all that you do for camp, I would like to thank... • The volunteers who provide countless hours of service during the summer and throughout the year. • The parents who entrust us with your sons each summer. • The members of the Agawam Council Board of Directors and Committees who volunteer so many hours and provide such essential leadership. • The hundreds of campers who learn to be their best selves each summer. • The tireless summer staff members, upon whose mentorship, teaching, and leadership the success of each summer hinges. • The donors who continue to provide such generous and loyal support for Agawam and our Campership programs. If “the Governor” were to return to Agawam today, he would find a healthy and strong organization, with camper and counselor retention rates each above 90%, and a remarkably generous community of donors and volunteers. Further, I think that he would be overwhelmed by the broad-reaching impact that his Camp has had on so many Agawam community members. I can envision his stern-faced portrait in Governor Hall and perhaps see the trace of a smile. In Agawam Spirit……..

President’s Report Dear Agawam Alumni & Friends: It is a privilege to assume the presidency of Agawam Council as we approach our 100th anniversary in 2019. Last summer, we concluded a very successful 96th season at Camp Agawam, with full enrollment of campers from 12 countries and 25 states. In June, The Main Idea served an additional 105 boys. Thanks to your generous support, Agawam was able to provide full Camperships to all 105 2015 Main Idea campers and full or partial Camperships to 26 of our Camp Agawam campers. It is my honor to continue the Mason legacy as we provide programs filled with opportunities for leadership, teamwork, and healthy competition that will impact the lives of young people forever. At Camp Agawam, a boy learns to become his best self. This is supported by our Mission Statement: “Agawam Council is an organization that provides a group living experience for young people through its programs: Camp Agawam and Main Idea at Camp Agawam. The nurturing, safe environment and facilities permit a wide variety of sports and learning activities. The ultimate goal is to promote personal growth, character, development of optimum potential and responsibility, leadership skills, enhancement of selfesteem, and awareness of community, beauty, truth, fortitude, and love for everyone involved with the organization.” We have many dedicated volunteers that serve Agawam Council as Officers, Directors, Committee Members, and Agawam Association Members, all of whom volunteer their time to support and strengthen the organization, solidify our future, and continue our mission. Examples of accomplishments this past year by our Agawam Council Committees include: • • • • •

Communications: Launching a new, responsive, website that better articulates our mission, history, traditions, and who we are today. Development: Continuing to raise funds in support of Agawam and our Campership programs. Evaluation: Reviewing staff benefit plans and providing 360° performance evaluation feedback to the Leadership Staff of Camp Agawam. Finance: Overseeing Agawam’s finances and budget. In 2015 we received an unqualified “clean” opinion from our independent auditors. Governance: Actively recruiting new members and officers to lead and bring new ideas to the organization, while increasing our diversity, engagement and efficiency. • Long Range Planning: Monitoring the implementation of our recently adopted Strategic Plan. • Plant: Acquiring adjacent parcels of land to provide housing and buffering around camp and updating our Master Site Plan to support the implementation of our Strategic Plan. • Program: Evaluating our programs for relevancy and enhancements and exploring other opportunities such as Family Camp. The Board of Directors unanimously endorsed a Strategic Plan at our August 2015 board meeting. With a firm plan and vision in hand, we now take the next steps towards preserving Agawam’s future. Among the recommendations of the plan was the urgent need to raise Endowment funds to preserve Agawam’s 7-week program and the Main Idea program. In order to prepare for support of this initiative and other recommendations from the plan, Agawam recently engaged the national fundraising firm Carter to conduct a Feasibility Study for a potential Capital Campaign. I want to thank everyone who provided thoughtful input and guidance for the Study. We look forward to engaging the entire Agawam Community as we move ahead with this exciting endeavor. As we approach our 100th anniversary, I reflect back on the lives that Agawam has touched and the opportunity to continue to make that impact in the future. A quote that sums this up for me comes from “Capt” Pete Caesar: “Agawam has been a defining force in my life, and I feel a very real responsibility to do what I can to ensure that it will continue to be there for others.” Thank you for your ongoing support.

“Capt” Peter H. Mason

Development Director’s Report 2015 marked another record-breaking year for Agawam fundraising. Agawam received gifts from over 1,200 donors who gave $398,148 in total contributions, providing key support for Camperships, program needs, the Preservation Trust, and our Endowments. We once again surpassed our Annual Appeal goal and, for the first time ever, raised over $300,000. Events played a major role in our annual fundraising efforts: the 4th AG/WAM Challenge for Camperships!! raised a record $72,927, while the Golf and Tennis Marathons provided a total of $49,981. Please join us for more fundraising fun in 2016! This summer, your support will help Agawam provide more than 130 boys with over 275 tuition-free weeks at Main Idea and our 7-week Camp Agawam Program. Your growing generosity has enabled us to continue to expand our Campership offerings, providing more and more boys with access to life-changing experiences on the shores of Crescent Lake. Support for Agawam’s Preservation Trust continues to provide important leverage for land acquisition and stewardship of our local environment. In 2015, Agawam Council pledged $25,000 of Preservation Trust funds to assist the Loon Echo Land Trust in their purchase of the Pismire Mountain property, which falls directly in Agawam’s viewshed across Crescent Lake. Additionally, the Preservation Trust supported our recent Strategic Planning endeavor. Service provided by well over 100 volunteers provided critical support for fundraising efforts and our summer programs in 2015. It is so inspiring to witness friends and alumni of all ages coming together for a place that means so much to us all. Your hard work and thoughtful support has an enormous positive impact on our programs and community, thank you for being such an important part of Agawam’s success and sustainability. As we look ahead to our 100th year of service, we are humbled by the long tradition of loyalty, friendship, service, and generosity provided by the Agawam community. Thank you!

Dear Chief, You know how impor tant Diane and I believe the Agawam experience is for boys living in today’s world. They need a break from all the programmed activities that youth of today par take in. They need to be able to choose for themselves the activities that they want to go to every day. They need to unplug from technology and be able to communicate face to face with friends and peers. They need to learn the pleasures of living simply and surrounded by nature. They need the feeling accomplishment that you get when you reach a mountain summit after a long hike or canoe down a river for three days. They need to play spor ts with their friends and peers over the summer that they don’t play competitively during the school year. “Scout” is a 20 year-old counselor who really has his act together and is a great role model. He had a tremendously positive influence on our son and his approach to hard work and life in general. We can’t thank you and “Scout” enough. We are already looking forward to seeing how much our son will grow as a person next summer. How! How!

Treasurer’s Report Agawam remains in a strong and sound financial position thanks to the generosity of our donors, the loyalty of our camp families, and the expertise and dedication of our leadership staff. Agawam continues to practice conservative financial management of the resources that have been generously contributed to the Council. We strive to continue the traditions and commitment to stewardship established by multiple generations of the Mason family and Garth Nelson, along with past and present Agawam Council members. During the fall of 2015, Agawam engaged the accounting firm Macpage to perform an audit of our F2015 financial statements. I am pleased to report that we received an unqualified opinion and a management letter that raised no concerns about our internal controls. The Agawam staff has been working hard to ensure that our internal processes and controls reflect the same high standards that we hold for our camping operations, and we are proud of this achievement. As we’ve discussed in past reports, in response to a sharply lower interest rate environment, Agawam Council voted in 2012 to reduce our annual draw rate on the endowment from 4.5% to 2.5%. This change has resulted in a substantial reduction to the endowment support for the Main Idea and Camp Agawam camperships, but we have successfully increased our Annual Appeal fundraising in an effort to offset this. Financially, Agawam had a very strong fiscal 2015, on both the operating and development fronts. Tuition revenue for F2015 was $1,134,560, up over 8% from $1,047,580 in F2014. Camp was full, thanks to a strong push on enrollment by the leadership staff, and this generated more revenue than we had budgeted. Staff salaries, benefits and payroll taxes make up our largest annual expense, with food, insurance and maintenance and equipment comprising the other major components. A portion of the additional tuition revenue was spent on food and additional seasonal staff to enhance the summer program. We also had another year of healthy maintenance and repair work. The balance of the tuition increase enabled us to generate a modest operating surplus. These surplus dollars are essential, and are invested in capital improvements and maintenance, as well as building our working capital balance. Over the last few years, Agawam has been able to contribute roughly $150,000 to our working capital reserve, which has eliminated our need to draw on our commercial line-of-credit in the seasonally slow part of our fiscal year. Agawam finished the 2015 fiscal year with cash of over $539,000, no long-term debt and nothing drawn on our line of credit. Our ratio of current assets to current liabilities stood at a very healthy 9 to 1. While our buildings and land are carried on our balance sheet at a book value of $1.8 million, their full value property tax assessment is over $3,100,000. After the fiscal year ended, Agawam was able to acquire an adjacent waterfront property in Raymond that the Council had previously been deemed to be strategically important for preserving the Agawam camp experience. The Council purchased the property for $429,000, financed by a commercial mortgage from TD Bank. Total investments of $1,386,943 represent our donor-restricted permanent endowments and our unrestricted Preservation Trust balances. Of that total, $215,475 is unrestricted, $579,659 is temporarily restricted by donors, and $591,809 is permanently restricted by donors. Agawam continues to take a relatively passive approach to the management of our endowment, favoring very low cost Vanguard index funds for our global equity exposure and a mix of more targeted Fidelity, Vanguard and iShares funds for our fixed income investments. For the calendar year that ended in 2015, the Main Idea and Campership Endowment generated a rate of return of -0.8%, with an asset allocation of roughly 50% equities and 50% fixed income. This performance is below the midpoint of the S&P 500 total return of +1.38% and the Barclays US Aggregate Bond Index return of +0.55%, primarily due to our allocation to international equities (the MSCI ACWI ex USA index was down 5.5% for 2015.) The Council is confident in our solid financial position, but remains mindful that our modest operating surpluses and relatively small endowment will need to grow in order to provide us with sufficient funding to be forward thinking about preservation of the physical plant and the Agawam experience for the long term.
