2014 ANNUAL REPORT

Director’s Report Dear Agawam Alumni, Friends, and Families, A few years ago I wrote a script for our Camp Agawam online video. The video is intended to capture the spirit and feel of Agawam for prospective parents and campers – it is an important recruiting tool. It displays in vivid color all sorts of great images of an Agawam summer while I talk about the many important aspects of a Camp Agawam experience. I begin the video by stating, “Camp Agawam is an incredible place...” As I reflect upon this past year within the context of our Annual Report, I realize that Camp Agawam truly is an incredible place. However, in the video I only scratch the surface as to the many reasons why. 2014 was a spectacular year. Over 250 boys attended Camp Agawam and Main Idea, programs marked by truly incredible staff and volunteers, a strong sense of community, remarkable personal growth in individuals, and lots of fun. One particular anecdote from the 2014 Ag/Wam season captures the power of the Agawam experience. With only seconds remaining in the third overtime of an exhausting and hard-fought Ag/Wam Upper Basketball game, Evan Dockery scored a layup to put the Ags ahead. What happened next spectacular: Wam Alex McQuilling received an inbound pass, turned, and made a half-court shot as time expired. Wams win! Most remarkable of all, Evan immediately found Alex and gave him a congratulatory hug as both teams gathered for cheers. Finally, all of camp gathered at center-court for a collective “Go Agawam!” cheer. At Agawam boys work hard together, compete, demonstrate great sportsmanship, and experience fantastic personal growth and successes within the context of a powerfully supportive and tight-knit community. What happens during the summer with campers and staff is obviously the essence of Camp Agawam. However, it is the carry-over from the summer experience that in some ways is the true magic. For most alumni, after they leave Agawam for the last time as either a camper or counselor they still carry Agawam with them. What do I mean by this? I have spoken to many alumni over the years and it is more than simply applying the lessons learned at camp later in life. Agawam becomes a living part of you. For someone who has never experienced Agawam this may be a hard thing to understand, but I am strongly suspicious that a large group of people reading these lines are nodding their heads (and perhaps even smiling a little bit) in recognition. Camp Agawam is an incredible place because it lives inside of you even when you are far away. It takes very little effort to smell the pine trees, feel the cool waters of Crescent Lake, laugh heartily at a great Council challenge, or sense the presence of Dave Mason or “Chief” Nelson looking over your shoulder as you determine whether or not to do the right thing. Camp Agawam is an incredible place because it is a part of the fiber of who we all are. In 2014, your support helped provide a total of 22 boys with either full or partial Camp Agawam Camperships. In addition, 105 boys attended the Main Idea and 15 year-old Main Idea wilderness trip. Your generous and thoughtful support made this possible. Camp Agawam is now a part of who all of these boys are as well. It is a powerful gift. The fact that our recent fundraising efforts with the Annual Appeal, the Golf Marathon, the Tennis Marathon, the Phonathon and most recently the Ag/Wam Challenge for Camperships!! have been so extremely successful is both a testament to the power of the Camp Agawam experience and to the incredible generosity and passion of our alumni and supporters. I did not say it in the video, but Camp Agawam is an incredible place because of you. As the current director and the person who can see first-hand the immediate impact Camp Agawam has on boys, all I can say is sincerely and humbly – thank you. In Agawam Spirit…

“Chief” Erik Calhoun

President’s Report Hello Agawam Family! On Labor Day weekend, over 200 members of the Agawam family gathered on the shores of Crescent Lake for a fun and moving celebration of Agawam’s 95th birthday. Amidst all the activities, conversations and tall tales it was abundantly clear - Agawam is in great shape and thriving! A full enrollment of campers during the summer developed physically, mentally, and spiritually to be “the best of whatever they are.” Caring for these boys was the outstanding seasonal staff assembled by “Chief” Calhoun and his leadership team. What happens over the course of the summer tells only a part of the story. Supporting the operation of Main Idea and seven-week Camp Agawam season is Agawam Council, a dedicated group of alumni, parents and friends who are committed to nurture and grow the excellence of Agawam. The Council’s structure is fairly simple, comprised of eight committees that oversee different areas of camp. Highlights from Council activities this past year include the ongoing excellence of the Finance Committee, which continues to set strict budgets, grow our endowment and disburse our Campership funding. The Program Committee annually evaluates different areas of our activities, this year focusing on traditions within the Agawam experience and their relevance to our youth development charge. Communications and Alumni Relations are currently reviewing our website and planning a significant upgrade that will be more user friendly and better tell the Agawam story to prospective families and alumni. Stewards of Agawam’s property and infrastructure, the Plant Committee has recently approved a new split rail fence at the top of the camp road. The Development Committee this year saw the Agawam family provide donations that exceeded any previous year. Thank you all for your generous and loyal support! Our staff handbooks have been updated and the Evaluation and HR Committee is reviewing the retirement plans for our Leadership Team. As you can see, it’s been a busy year! During the 2014 Winter Board Meeting, Agawam Council approved creation of the Strategic Planning Group, which was charged with developing a set of directional priorities and goals for Agawam over the next 5 years. Working with a consultant, this group will be evaluating what Agawam is doing now and how we might want to improve or further our youth development work. This is an inclusive process that will incorporate input from the entire Agawam family and beyond. This is an exciting initiative, the outcome of which will give us a road map of where we’re going in the near future. Camp Agawam’s success at helping boys be “the best of whatever they are” comes from a coordinated partnership between an excellent Leadership Team, a talented and nurturing seasonal staff, a high functioning board, and most of all, from a committed and supportive group of alumni, parents and friends. Many thanks to all of you; together we make Agawam strong and vibrant, and a leader in the youth development industry. ‘Til we meet again,

“Loot” Bob Fryer

Treasurer’s Report Agawam remains in a strong financial position thanks to the generosity of our donors, the loyalty of our camp families, and the expertise and dedication of our leadership staff. We strive to continue the traditions and commitment to stewardship established by multiple generations of the Mason family and Garth Nelson, along with past and present Agawam Council members. Financially, Agawam had a strong fiscal 2014, on both the operating and development fronts. Tuition revenue for F2014 was $1,047,580, up sharply from $867,977 in F2013. Camp was full, thanks to a strong push on enrollment by the leadership staff, and this generated more revenue than we had budgeted. Contributions from friends and alumni of $427,567 were also significantly higher, up from $341,533 in F2013. A portion of the additional tuition revenue was spent on food and additional seasonal staff to enhance the summer program. The balance of the increase enabled us to generate a larger-than-budgeted operating surplus. These surplus dollars are essential, and are invested in capital improvements and maintenance, as well as building our working capital balance. Major capital improvements included the purchase of a new truck and a new Agawagon, along with new roofs on a number of cabins. Agawam finished the 2014 fiscal year with cash of over $513,000, no long-term debt and nothing drawn on our line of credit. Our ratio of current assets to current liabilities stood at a very healthy 8.5 to 1. While our buildings and land are carried on our balance sheet at a book value of $1,833,307, their full value property tax assessment is over $3,100,000. Total investments of $1,460,604 represent our permanent endowment and preservation balances. Of that total, $245,623 is unrestricted, $629,472 is temporarily restricted by donors, and $585,509 is permanently restricted by donors. For the calendar year that ended in 2014, the Main Idea and Campership Endowment generated a rate of return of 4.25%, with an asset allocation of roughly 50% equities and 50% fixed income. This performance is below the midpoint of the S&P 500 total return of +13.7% and the Barclays US Aggregate Bond Index return of +6%, primarily due to our exposure to international equities, which were down 4-5% for the year, and TIPs, which were up only 3.6%. In response to a sharply lower interest rate environment, the Council voted in 2012 to reduce our annual draw rate on the endowment from 4.5% to 2.5%. This change has resulted in a substantial reduction to the endowment support for the Main Idea and Camp Agawam camperships, but we have successfully increased our annual fundraising in an effort to offset this. We appreciate your continued and growing support. We continue to work towards funding necessary capital improvements and maintenance, as well as building a comfortable working capital balance for the offseason. Staff salaries, benefits and payroll taxes make up our largest annual expense, with food, insurance, maintenance and equipment comprising the other major components.

Development Director’s Report Thank you for your generous support for Agawam! In 2014, gifts from over 1,200 donors provided $427,567, marking a 25% increase in overall contributions for the second straight year. Our 2014 Annual Appeal was a huge success. We surpassed our goal and raised $268,261, our greatest total ever. Fundraising events were marked by fun, friendship, and fantastic results: 100-Hole Golf Marathon and Tennis Marathons generated over $55,000 and the 3rd Annual AG/WAM Challenge for Camperships!! raised a record $41,107. Agawam continues to provide fantastic summer experiences to so many boys, and your generosity has a big impact. Your 2014 support will help provide more than 130 boys with over 250 tuition-free weeks at Camp Agawam and Main Idea this summer, and we are particularly excited by increased commitment to Campership programs and targeted support for improvements to our waterfront. Agawam’s fundraising work and summer programs rely heavily on the talent and effort of volunteers. From hosting recruiting events, to golfing 100 holes, to making phone calls, to painting cabins, to teaching activities and connecting with campers during Main Idea, volunteerism is a critical component of Agawam’s success and sustainability. We send our heartfelt thanks to all members of the Agawam community for your loyalty, friendship, service, and support.

Hiawatha Society Profile: “Major” Ben Small “Major” Ben Small lives in Concord, MA with his wife Katie and two future Sin-Ag sons, Jake (4) and Tyler (2). He recently started the investment firm Birchview Capital with friend and fellow Agawam alumnus, “Admiral” Matt Strobeck. Ben was a camper for 6 years, a counselor for 4 years, and is now a board member. In his words, “the decision to go to Agawam was probably one of the most important, if not the most important decision my parents and I made for my development both as a boy and later as a young man.” Many of Ben’s Agawam friends are still his best friends today. “I can honestly say I think I keep in contact with about 50 to 60 Agawam alumns and that list is growing, not shrinking. I continue to love the fact that when I catch up with someone from Agawam that I haven’t talked to in 15 years, it is almost always like we just spoke a few days ago. That part about Agawam never changes. The bond created during those seven weeks is difficult to match.” For Ben, joining the Hiawatha Society was a no-brainer. “Annual giving to Agawam is not always easy for everyone, but the beauty of planned giving through the Hiawatha Society is that everyone can participate. You could commit a set dollar amount, a percentage of your estate, a portion of a life insurance policy. You can be very creative. For anyone who is active philanthropically today and has created a charitable gift fund, that money on which you have already taken the charitable deduction can never be put in your kids hands anyway. You could allocate a certain percentage of it to Agawam today just in case something happens to you. That’s what we did. Also - you don’t need to be older to consider being in the Hiawatha Society. Everyone is encouraged to join. One team - one dream! “At the end of the day, I want to see Agawam flourish for the next 100 years like it has for the almost 100 years it has now existed. The Hiawatha Society is a great way to make sure this happens.”

The Hiawatha Society recognizes alumni, parents, and friends who have established planned gift arrangements with Agawam or included Agawam in their estate plans. All are welcome to join; there is no giving minimum. Please contact “Lt” Mike Bensen (lt@campagawam.org, 207.627.4780) if you would like further information about joining the Hiawatha Society.
