2013 ANNUAL REPORT

Director’s Report As a summer camp professional I spend a certain amount of time interacting with my camp director peers. I am on the board of Maine Summer Camps – an organization intended to promote and strengthen the summer camp industry in Maine. I also actively participate in the annual New England American Camping Association (ACA) meeting in New Hampshire. In addition, Camp Agawam is a member of the Maine Camp Experience, a community of local summer camps. It is through these interactions that I have come to learn that there are many very good summer camps out there, a lot of which are right here in Maine. When I meet with other camp directors it is always interesting to trade stories about our respective organizations. It is with the perspective of knowing something about the many terrific New England summer camps that I can say without hesitation that Camp Agawam is a truly special and unique place. I feel strongly that one of the primary factors that makes us stand out is the strength and passion of our extended Agawam family. It is simply amazing to me that so many people are so willing to help out in so many different ways. It is certainly reflected in the generous giving highlighted in this Annual Report – your thoughtful support has a huge impact on Agawam and the boys, thank you! If you couple that with the amazing work done by the Agawam Council Board of Directors and Committee members, along with the hours logged by our many volunteers, it adds up to something very special. 2013 was a terrific year for Agawam. It was one of the best summers that I can remember in terms of overall quality of staff and campers, and over 90% of 2013 campers will be returning this summer. This is an amazing statistic, but also one that has been fairly common for Camp Agawam. It is a testament to the strength and quality of the young men and women who make up our staff. I love to stroll around Camp during the day and watch the interactions between campers and staff. Agawam counselors engage in their jobs with such an energy and joy that it cannot help but have a wonderful influence on the campers. One important transition in our staff over the past five years has been the ability to add older and more experienced staff members to our team. The core of any Agawam staff is the college-aged young men and women. However, it is also critical to have a small cadre of staff members – generally professional educators – who can influence and impact our staff and campers in positive ways. This summer our Waterfront Director, Trip Director and Head of Challenge (ropes course) fit this description. Not only do I know that these essential portions of the Agawam program will be run professionally and with consistent quality, I can also count a positive mentoring influence on the general staff. I have been able to add these essential staff members because of the flexibility afforded by the construction of the staff cabins of Malm and Masconomo. I recently had an e-mail exchange with an alumnus who has not been to Agawam since the 1950’s. The reason he wrote to me was that he found a vintage Agawam jacket from his time at camp and wanted to donate it. In one of his notes he said to me “I have many happy memories: Ghost Rocks, Dairy Maids, Katiaki, Council.” His passion for Camp remains strong even after a sixty-year absence. Powerful stuff, and another testament to the strength of the Agawam community. As the director of Camp Agawam I want to express my sincere thanks to the many people who make us what we are. It is your passion, your caring, and your willingness to give back that makes Agawam unique in the world of summer camps. I also want you to know that Camp Agawam is your place. I hope that you will join us for the 95th Reunion this summer, but I also want you to feel welcome to visit Agawam anytime. If it has been a long time since your last visit I look forward to the opportunity to show you around. If you come to a Council Fire I cannot promise that you will not have to judge Tribal Charades or a Barnyard Fest between the cabins of Yale and Lang, but I can promise a strengthened connection (or reconnection) with a powerful Agawam legacy. In Agawam Spirit...

President’s Report Greetings, and thank you to all members of the Agawam community for your generous support for camp! In 2013 we operated two successful camp seasons, Main Idea and Camp Agawam, with strong enrollments and fine programs. Support from the Agawam community enabled us to provide 250 tuition-free weeks of camp to 125 boys. How! How! “Chief ” Calhoun and his Leadership Team led an outstanding group of seasonal staff, resulting in a fantastic camper summer. I am pleased to report that a vast majority of 2013 campers and staff will be returning to the shore of Crescent Lake for the summer of 2014. Having a strong Leadership Team running camp frees up Agawam Council to focus on its primary role of planning Agawam’s long term success and viability, and all committees have been doing that! The Program Committee is reviewing all aspects of our program to ensure that we are providing the best possible opportunities for campers to develop physically, mentally and spiritually. We run a great program, but that doesn’t mean it can’t be improved! Other Committees are working hard as well. The Plant Committee defines areas of our physical plant that need improvement or development. Communications and Alumni Relations is working on a number of things, including effective methods of reaching out to more potential families who might be interested in sending their sons to Agawam. Human Resources and Evaluation has developed a number of ways to track feedback on all areas of the Agawam experience, while the Development Committee works all year on raising funds to support our programs, and the Finance Committee makes sure that we are spending our money wisely and oversees our endowments. Looking ahead, this summer we will celebrate Agawam’s 95th Anniversary over Labor Day weekend. Starting Friday, August 29th, and running through Sunday morning, we’ll meet old friends and make new ones, engage in activities, exaggerate stories from the past, and participate in a council fire on Saturday night. Sunday afternoon following the reunion, Agawam will host a memorial service for “Chief ” Garth Nelson, who passed away last summer. “Chief ” was Camp Director and Executive Director at Agawam for 23 years, leaving an indelible mark on Camp and those with whom he came in contact. He introduced a number of innovations: the “quad” in Upper Campus, the incorporation of female staff members, and the development of the role of 15 year-old “senior” campers, just to name a few. While his leadership and character are missed, it’s comforting that “Chief ” Calhoun carries on in the tradition that “Chief ” set. We anticipate an outstanding summer in 2014, and I look forward to seeing you all at Agawam’s 95th Anniversary Reunion!! ‘Til we meet again,

“Loot” Bob Fryer

Treasurer’s Report Agawam remains in a strong financial position thanks to the generosity of our donors, the loyalty of camp families, and the expertise and dedication of our leadership staff. We strive to continue the traditions and commitment to stewardship established by multiple generations of the Mason family and Garth Nelson, along with past and present Agawam Council members. Agawam finished the 2013 fiscal year with cash of over $550,000, no long-term debt and nothing drawn on our line of credit. Our ratio of current assets to current liabilities stood at a healthy 4 to 1. While our buildings and land are carried on our balance sheet at a book value of $1,806,580, their full value property tax assessment is over $3,100,000. Total investments of $1,340,615 represent our permanent endowment and preservation balances. Of that total, $177,451 is unrestricted, $584,690 is temporarily restricted by donors, and $578,474 is permanently restricted by donors. Tuition revenue for F2013 was $867,977 (down slightly vs. F2012) which was supplemented by contributions from friends and alumni of $341,533 (up sharply from F2012). For the calendar year that ended in 2013, the Main Idea and Campership Endowment generated a rate of return of 10.8%, with an asset allocation of roughly 50% equities and 50% fixed income. This performance is below the midpoint of the S&P 500 total return of +32% and the Barclays US Aggregate Bond Index return of (2%), primarily due to our exposure to TIPs, GNMA bonds, international equities and a small amount of gold. In response to a sharply lower interest rate environment, the Council voted in 2012 to reduce our annual draw rate on the endowment from 4.5% to 2.5%, to be phased in over 2 years. This change significantly reduces support for Main Idea and Camp Agawam Camperships, and we have increased our Annual Appeal fundraising targets in an effort to offset this.Your generous contributions in 2013 bridged this gap, allowing us to maintain full support for our Campership programs. Thank you for your continued and growing support! From an operations perspective, we had some higher than expected costs, which reduced our cash flow from operations. We continue to work towards funding necessary capital improvements and maintenance, as well as building a comfortable working capital balance for the offseason. Staff salaries, benefits and payroll taxes make up our largest annual expense, with food, insurance and maintenance and equipment comprising the other major components.

Development Director’s Report Thank you for your generous support for Agawam! Greater need and a reduced endowment draw prompted us to increase our goals in 2013, and you responded with overwhelming generosity, providing critical support and funding for our youth development programs. With your help, we surpassed our 2013 Annual Appeal goal and raised $191,217, our greatest total ever. How! How! As you can see in the chart below, recent years have witnessed noteworthy increases in Annual Appeal fundraising; thank you all for your generous support! 2013 fundraising events were marked by good times and great fundraising: 100-Hole Golf Marathon and Tennis Marathons generated over $50,000 for Camperships and the 2nd Annual AG/WAM Alumni Challenge for Camperships raised a record $23,000. Overall contributions in 2013 topped $340,000, up 28% from 2012. Agawam’s annual fundraising efforts and summer programs rely heavily on the talent and effort of volunteers. From hosting gatherings, to golfing 100 holes, to making phone calls, to painting cabins, to cooking dinner for our staff, to teaching activities during Main Idea, volunteerism is a key component of Agawam’s success and sustainability. Thank you for this critical support! Our heartfelt thanks to all members of the Agawam community for your loyalty, friendship, and support.

The Hiawatha Society

Hiawatha Profile: “Dusty” Bob Dow “Dusty” Dow was living in a log cabin with no running water when he spent his first week at Main Idea. He returned for five summers as a camper, and still recalls the feeling of total acceptance that he experienced at camp. “Dusty” was invited by Dave Mason to work as a Kitchen Assistant several summers later, and after graduating from college he returned to Main Idea as a volunteer. Since then, “Dusty” has been a fixture at Main Idea, volunteering each summer from 2005 to 2012, and he plans to return again this summer. He has also served on Agawam’s Board of Directors. In his words: “Camp Agawam is a home away from home, an extended family that I get to see every year. I cherish the opportunity to get to know the boys and how they think about life, and then challenge them to think outside the box. Watching the opportunities of the world getting bigger in their minds is such a joy for me.” Currently a Florida resident, “Dusty” has two amazing daughters and works as a financial advisor for Merrill Lynch. He writes: “the intention for my planned gift is to eventually leave Agawam a large enough endowment to cover tuition for most or all Main Idea campers in perpetuity. I want to give the ‘gift of Main Idea’ via volunteering, annual giving, and estate planning, to as many Maine boys as I can. I challenge others to follow my path by volunteering, making an annual donation, and considering including Agawam in your legacy plan.”

All are welcome to join; there is no giving minimum. Please contact “Lt” Mike Bensen (lt@campagawam.org, (207) 627-4780) if you would like further information about joining the Hiawatha Society.
