News from Around the School Camberwell Grammar Aquatic Award Aquatic and Recreation Victoria has recognised Camberwell Grammar Aquatic for its fantastic new program – Junior Racers. We were thrilled to see Junior Racers receive the industry award for best Innovative Program. The program is a fantastic grass root initiative for junior swimmers, and has already been of benefit to many children in the community.
Underground Synthetic Training Venue The school has now added to the already impressive resume of sport and activity spaces with the introduction of the new underground synthetic training venue. It is situated to the left-hand side of the underground carpark as you enter at the bottom of the ramp, adjacent to the cadet storage area. It will service all sports during the colder, wetter months and provides a space for smallsided games. It includes a batting machine for cricket, as well as a goalkeeping machine for hockey.
Year 8 Warner Youth Education Alcohol Presentation Xavier Diaz, from Warner Youth Education, spoke to our Year 8 students about the dangers associated with alcohol use in teenagers. While statistics are indicating that teenagers are pushing alcohol aside to be their best in their sporting, learning and cultural endeavours, education that provides students with a range of strategies for harm minimisation involving alcohol is essential for their wellbeing and life skills development. Xavier kept the students focused as he taught them about the dangers associated with alcohol and how to respond to peer group pressure, including how to successfully communicate boundaries to your peer group. Chess Champions In the wake of the Netflix series, The Queen’s Gambit, a mini‑series about a chess champion, there has been a renewed interest in chess playing in the community, and CGS is no exception. Taking advantage of warm summer weather, and eager to practise and improve their chess skills, boys took to playing chess outdoors during lunch breaks this term.
