Camberwell Grammar Aquatic Award
Aquatic and Recreation Victoria has recognised Camberwell Grammar Aquatic for its fantastic new program – Junior Racers. We were thrilled to see Junior Racers receive the industry award for best Innovative Program. The program is a fantastic grass root initiative for junior swimmers, and has already been of benefit to many children in the community.
Underground Synthetic Training Venue
The school has now added to the already impressive resume of sport and activity spaces with the introduction of the new underground synthetic training venue. It is situated to the left-hand side of the underground carpark as you enter at the bottom of the ramp, adjacent to the cadet storage area. It will service all sports during the colder, wetter months and provides a space for smallsided games. It includes a batting machine for cricket, as well as a goalkeeping machine for hockey.

Chess Champions
In the wake of the Netflix series, The Queen’s Gambit, a mini-series about a chess champion, there has been a renewed interest in chess playing in the community, and CGS is no exception. Taking advantage of warm summer weather, and eager to practise and improve their chess skills, boys took to playing chess outdoors during lunch breaks this term.
Xavier Diaz, from Warner Youth Education, spoke to our Year 8 students about the dangers associated with alcohol use in teenagers. While statistics are indicating that teenagers are pushing alcohol aside to be their best in their sporting, learning and cultural endeavours, education that provides students with a range of strategies for harm minimisation involving alcohol is essential for their wellbeing and life skills development. Xavier kept the students focused as he taught them about the dangers associated with alcohol and how to respond to peer group pressure, including how to successfully communicate boundaries to your peer group. Moreover, he highlighted issues associated with reputation, relationships, trust, and regret.

Junior School Maths Morning
The Junior School students enjoyed a wonderful morning of maths activities together. One of the games involved boys throwing as many bean bags or shuttlecocks as possible into a hoop within a one-minute time frame. They had to record their scores using their right hand, then their left. They added their scores to determine which hand scored the most. They had to compare scores to determine who scored the highest and who scored the lowest in their team. They also had to work out the difference between the highest and lowest score. The older boys were caring mentors for their younger team members.

Year 7 Graffiti Prevention through Life Skills Education
Xavier Diaz, from Warner Youth Education, spoke to our Year 7 students about graffiti prevention as part of their Life Skills education. Xavier, whose presentations are always incredibly engaging for our students, used graffiti as a base issue to discuss more broader themes such as drivers behind anti-social behaviour and misguided decision making, the effects of our actions on others, peer pressure, and how to help themselves make better choices in difficult situations. The students were encouraged to think about those who become victims of graffiti and how taking part in such behaviour could result in legal and criminal charges. Through his presentation, Xavier encouraged students to instead explore legitimate forms and benefits of positive self-expression.
