New Gallery Space and Scholars in Residence Accommodation for the School

Our school soon hopes to welcome visiting scholars, artists and musicians to a new ‘Scholar in Residence’ flat located on the school property as part of the newly renovated house, Dorset.

The property Dorset is an impressive art deco house which has recently been renovated by the school as an art gallery and apartment. The gallery will eventually house an impressive Australian art collection owned by Dr Josh Xipell (1949), a Patron of the CGS Foundation which has been bequeathed to the School.

The original house, built to an outstanding quality, has an interesting history. According to our School Historian, Dr David Bird, the house was constructed in 1927 by the well-known local builder J.A.E. Humphries, father of past student Barry (1952), who was enrolled at Camberwell in 1941. Camberwell Grammar was still located on Burke Road during this time, and did not become a near neighbour of Dorset until the move to Mont Albert Road in time for the beginning of the 1935 school year. From that time onwards, those peering over the eastern fence of Dorset would be able to see the new William Angliss Building. The house has been restored to its original glory, with the original wood panelling and light fittings being restored and retained. The Scholar’s accommodation consists of a one bedroom apartment, with sitting area and kitchenette. The garage at the back of the property has been made into a studio and workshop. Thanks to the previous owners, the Williams family, for the 1930s photographs of the house as a happy family home – with particular thanks to Mrs Bernice Williams.
