At Camberwell Grammar School, we are committed to offering every student the best possible education to prepare them for life beyond school. As an independent Anglican day school for boys from Pre-Preparatory to Year 12, our mission is to nurture academic excellence alongside the personal growth of each student.

Founded in 1886, our school proudly upholds a rich tradition while embracing innovation to meet the evolving needs of our students. Dedicated peers, mentors and staff support students to discover their passions and reach their potential. Our motto Spectemur Agendo, ‘By Our Deeds May We Be Known’, encourages our students to act with integrity and to strive to be good men who contribute meaningfully to our world. This report is produced in accordance with the national compliance legislation and is also published on the Camberwell Grammar School website: www.cgs.vic.edu.au.

The Student Body

Student Attendance

Parents/Guardians are requested to report reasons for student absence to the School.

Teachers mark an electronic roll each lesson and the Administrative Officer identifies and determines the nature of any absence, records the details in the School’s administrative system and makes class teachers aware of a student’s absence through subsequent class rolls. A daily student absence summary report is published on the School’s Intranet for all staff. Staff involved in the pastoral care of particular students liaise with parents if there are concerns regarding attendance. A summary of each student’s attendance is published to parents on their semester report, a digital copy of which is stored on the School’s Intranet.

Attendance data is forwarded to the Australian Government for Years 1 to 10 students biannually, during semesters 1 and 2.

Student Outcomes

The 2024 VCE results were outstanding, equalling the best in Camberwell Grammar’s history. Despite facing significant disruptions during their formative years due to COVID-19, 172 Year 12 students demonstrated extraordinary perseverance, with each one successfully completing their VCE.

Their hard work was rewarded with exceptional results: 15% achieved an ATAR of 99 or better, placing them in the top 1% of the state, while 54% scored 90 or above. The depth of results was pleasing, with a median ATAR of 90.85 and an average of 85.4. A remarkable 12 perfect study scores across various subjects further highlight the academic strength of this cohort.

Our Duces were Joel Cheok, Jerry Jin and Chris Lu, who scored the highest possible rank of 99.95. Our Proxime Accessit was Ethan Ong, who scored 99.85. All four, apart from being exceptional students, were actively involved in the full life of the School and worked very hard at their studies. From competing internationally in Science Olympiads to excelling in sports, debating and service, these students embodied the Camberwell Grammar values.

A further 21 students attained an ATAR of 99 or higher: Daniel An, Nathan Bosmans, Raphael Champion, Adrian Chiu, Joshua Day, Timothy Gunasegaram, Will Joy, Matthew Lau, Jason Liang, Ethan Mak, Jonty Neil, Brodie Pang, Sabir Singh, Rylan Tan, Matthew Tong, Minh Tran, Matthew Treagus, Rohan Wickremasinghe, Jayden Yap, Tony Zhang and Pierce Zheng.

While these numbers are impressive, they are just one measure of success. Many students faced personal hardships throughout the year and still emerged with results to be immensely proud of. The ATAR may capture a moment in time, but it does not reflect the journey, the resilience or the character that each student has developed. It is these qualities that will shape their futures far beyond the classroom.

Their teachers played a significant role – their dedication, guidance and belief in their students helped make these results possible. Likewise, parents, who were supportive, encouraging and patient with their sons throughout the journey of a VCE year. Congratulations to every member of the Class of 2024.

‘The 2024 VCE results were outstanding, equalling the best in Camberwell Grammar’s history.’

Student Destination

Student Destination - Class of 2024

167 of the Camberwell Grammar School students who successfully completed their VCE in 2024 applied to undertake tertiary study in 2025. Whilst 163 students received offers in December, an additional 26 offers were made in January but none in the February rounds. Whilst most students received just one offer, 33% received two or more. In terms of preferences, 83% of applicants received their first or second preferences. Two students have advised that instead of taking up their offers domestically, they will be accepting offers to study abroad, one at Oxford in the UK and one at Missouri State University beginning later in the year.

The University of Melbourne and Monash University accounted for more than 70% of offers received; however, Monash continues to be the preferred destination of choice. Sixty-eight students accepted offers to study at Monash compared to Melbourne (51). Deakin University was the third most popular institution - 19 offers overall – with students drawn by the range of specialised choices. The table opposite compares tertiary destinations over the past three years.

Tertiary Placements 2022-2024

The following table highlights the fields of study that our 2024 cohort intend to pursue this year. Once again, Management and Commerce remains the clear favourite, with just under one third of students selecting those courses, though many combine it with another area of interest. The next most popular area is Pure Science, with Society and Culture third. A substantial number of students chose to study double degrees (41) or were successful in applying for guaranteed packages of undergraduate with post-graduate courses (18).

Fields of Study 2023 to 2025

Total 222 (167 students), as double degrees count in more than one field of study. Postgraduate options in different fields are also counted (eg. Science with guaranteed post-graduate Engineering pathway are counted in both areas)

# This includes offers in Medicine (4), Physiotherapy (1), Occupational Therapy (1)

** This includes offers in Arts (12) and Law (10)

Camberwell Grammar values staff satisfaction and wellbeing. The School has an established Health and Wellbeing Program (CamberWellness) which focuses on improving physical and mental health. The School also offers its staff professional development opportunities, with set days put aside each year for further development and learning. All staff of the School are offered opportunities to broaden their knowledge and enhance their skills. Professional learning covers a variety of topics from role-specific to leadership, HR compliance training and more. All academic staff are registered with the Victorian Institute of Teaching.
