թան­գա­րան­ներն ա­վե­լի ճա­նա­չե­լի դարձ­նե­լով մի­ ջազ­գային հան­րու­թյա­նը:­ Իմ խո­րին շնոր­հա­կա­լու­թյունն եմ հայտ­նում բո­լո­ րին, ո­ւմ նվի­րու­մի և ջան­քե­րի շնոր­հիվ կ յան­քի կոչ­ վեց «Գ­ևորգ Գրի­գո­րյան ՋՈՏ­ՏՈ» ցու­ցա­հան­դե­սը Գա­ֆէս­ճե­ան ար­վես­տի կենտ­րո­նում: ­Ց ու­ց ա­հ ան­դ ե­ս ի կա­յ աց­մ ա­ն ը նպաս­տ ե­լ ու հա­մ ար հա­տուկ շնոր­հա­կա­լու­թյուն եմ հայտ­նում Հա­յաս­ տա­ն ի Հան­ր ա­պ ե­տ ու­թ յան մշա­կ ույ­թ ի նա­խ ա­ր ար պա­րոն Ար­մեն Ա­մի­րյա­նին: Շ­նոր­հա­վո­րում եմ և սր­տանց շնոր­հա­կա­լու­թյուն եմ հայտ­նում Հա­յաս­տա­նի ազ­գային պատ­կե­րաս­րա­ հի տնօ­րեն պա­րոն Ար­ման Ծա­տու­րյա­նին, Գևորգ Գրի­գո­րյա­նի (Ջոտ­տո) ար­վես­տա­նոց-թան­գա­րա­նի տնօ­րեն պա­րոն Մար­տին Մի­քայե­լ յա­նին, ի­նչ­պես նաև մեր գոր­ծըն­կեր­նե­րին, ո­ւմ հետ հա­մա­գոր­ծակ­ ցու­թյան շնոր­հիվ կա­յա­ցավ ցու­ցադ­րու­թյու­նը: Շ­նոր­հա­կա­լու­թյուն եմ հայտ­նում նաև Գա­ֆէս­ճե­ան ար­վես­տի կենտ­րո­նի ո­ղ ջ ան­ձնա­կազ­մին՝ Գա­ֆէս­ ճե­ան ժա­ռան­գու­թյանն ան­մնա­ցորդ նվի­րու­մի և ցու­ ցա­հան­դեսն ի­րա­կա­նաց­նե­լու հա­մար: ­Հա­մոզ­ված ե­նք, որ «Գ­ևորգ Գրի­գո­րյան ՋՈՏ­ՏՈ» ցու­ցա­հան­դե­սը նոր լույս կսփ­ռի ար­վես­տա­գե­տի կ յան­քի և ստեղ­ծա­գոր­ծա­կան ու­ղու բա­ցա­հայտ­մա­ նը. ար­վես­տա­գե­տի, ով թեև ու­նե­ցավ ծանր ման­ կու­թյուն և ստեղ­ծ ա­գ որ­ծ ա­կան բե­ղուն շր­ջա­նում հա­ճախ չըն­կալ­վեց շր­ջա­պա­տի և գոր­ծըն­կեր­նե­րի կող­մից, այ­դու­հան­դերձ ի վեր­ջո ստա­ցավ իր ժա­մա­ նա­կի հայտ­նի­նե­րի բարձ­րա­գույն գնա­հա­տա­կա­նը և հա­վետ ամ­րագ­րեց իր տե­ղը ժո­ղովր­դի ար­ժա­նի զա­վակ­նե­րի շար­քում:

Acknowledgements

On November 25, 2017 the Cafesjian Center for the Arts marked the opening of the exhibition, Gevorg Grigorian GIOTTO, the sixth exhibition in the Center’s Inter-Museum Cooperation program.

The exhibition is presented in partnership with the National Gallery of Armenia (NGA) and includes a selection of works from the collection of NGA, as well as its branch Gevorg Grigorian (Giotto) Studio-Museum.

This retrospective exhibition, dedicated to the 120th birthday anniversary of the artist, presents 62 paintings and graphic works, most of which have not been exhibited before.

Through the exhibition, Gevorg Grigorian GIOTTO, the Cafesjian Center for the Arts provides significant insight into the artist’s oeuvre, by presenting his works in a new environment and with a new concept.

The artworks executed in unique style reflect the artist’s philosophy of existence, his exceptionally profound perception of human spirit and genuinely honest expression of his feelings.

By organizing these joint exhibitions, the Cafesjian Center for the Arts encourages inter-museum cooperation, bringing the Armenian public into closer contact with art and fostering international recognition for Armenian museums.

The Center expresses its gratitude to all whose dedication and tireless efforts made the Gevorg Grigorian GIOTTO exhibition a reality at the Cafesjian Center for the Arts.

Paintings by Gevorg Grigorian (Giotto) occupy a deserving place in the permanent exhibitions at the National Gallery of Armenia (NGA), as well as at the Gevorg Grigorian Studio-Museum in Yerevan, branch of NGA. More than seven hundred pieces from the heritage of this celebrated artist are kept in the collection of the National Gallery.

The exhibition, Gevorg Grigorian GIOTTO opens doors for discovering his art beyond academic environment, perceive and appreciate his oeuvre in a new way. The selection of the exhibition not only reveals the artist’s path in the year of his 120th birthday anniversary, but also sheds new light on Giotto’s versatile creative character.

I highly appreciate this wonderful initiative by the Cafesjian Center for the Arts in the scope of the Inter-Museum Cooperation program and express my gratitude to the staff of the Center. I do believe that this kind of joint projects enrich the artistic life of Yerevan and strengthen professional ties between museums.

Gevorg Grigorian GIOTTO Exhibition: New Horizons

In 1918, an exhibition of the works of school’s young pupils was heldat the School of Painting and Sculpture of the Caucasian Society for Promotion of Fine Arts in Tiflis. Gevorg Grigorian (whose nom de guerre, Giotto, was not yet in use) was also present at this show for the first time, including his painting, A Girl (p. 24). The works of the young artist had already attracted the attention of the specialists, and the press referred to them, highlighting him among the participants.1 Almost a century after the artist’s first exhibition, the inclusion of that piece at the Gevorg Grigorian GIOTTO exhibition, dedicated to the 120th birthday anniversary of the artist, is quite symbolic, as it points to the beginning of his journey.

This exhibition aims, indeed, at a comprehensive presentation of Gevorg Grigorian’s (Giotto) art.

Nevertheless, in the case of an artist who has become a classic in a certain sense and enjoys a stable position in art history, a number of challenges—above all the issue of avoiding repetition—arise. Gevorg Grigorian Giotto is no exception. At the first glance,it has been written many times about his artistic legacy, his role has been underscored in Armenian fine arts, also as a representative of the Tiflis school, and Gevorg Grigorian (Giotto2) Studio-Museum functions in Yerevan. However, it is always possible to disclose new

horizons, and in the case of Giotto, those horizons are associated with never exhibited or less known works; first of all, graphic works. Those layers reveal the hidden sources of Giotto’s aesthetic thinking, in other words, “the other side of the moon,” which always existed, yet was invisible to us, at least until this exhibition.

The exhibition, being retrospective, is aimed at revealing Gevorg Grigorian from the perspective that has not been in circulation before. The artist, along with his many milestone paintings (shown during his lifetime and posthumously), conceived other valuable works throughout the six decades of his oeuvre.

The 1920s were important for Giotto especially with his studies at Vkhutemas3, which had a great impact on his aesthetic perception. The artist’s particular attitude towards old masters is already noticeable in this period. He received his preliminary art education at the School of Painting and Sculpture of the Caucasian Society for Promotion of Fine Arts in Tiflis, where his teachers were renowned Armenian painter Yeghishe Tadevosyan, as well as Russian artists Boris Fogel and Oscar Schmerling. In Moscow he studied under Lyubov Popova’s4 supervision. In his works of the 1920-30s, presented in this exhibition, the existence of a synthesis between Armenian fine arts,

On one occasion, Gevorg Grigorian himself said that he regarded Giotto as one of his greatest teachers and commented that at one of his exhibitions even his self-portrait had been likened to Giotto, after which his artist friends had begun to call him so.

old classic masters, and new Soviet art,filled with revolutionary moods, is clearly visible. In his works Sorrow (p. 28), Portrait of an Actress (p. 26), Diana (p. 40), The Boy with a Pipe (p. 29), Ophelia (p.

31), My Diana (p. 62) one can feel the spirit of such classical masters as El Greco, Luis de Morales, Titian, and others. The influence of Italian master Giotto, whose name became the nom de guerre of the Armenian artist, is particularly striking in Grief (Pieta՛) (p. 33) and Requiem (p. 32), works well-connected in terms of both compositional and constructive terms to the early Renaissance master’s fresco Lamentation of Christ (1305). At the same time, numerous graphic works of small format show the artist’s Moscow education and his regard for European avant-garde: Self-portrait (p. 34), Walking in the City (p. 46), Conversation (p. 36), Laundresses (p. 42), Girl Reporting (p. 39), etc. The style of the artist goes through its formative years: discreet, laconic, and somewhat ascetic, with voluminous geometric forms, transmitting a monumental sound even to the small format work.

From the second half of the 1930s to the end of the 1950s, Gevorg Grigorian suffered a setback in his creativity. He was expelled from the Artists’ Union of Georgia for many years, while his dramatic works were

very negatively labeled: they “were not socialist,” “were not optimistic,” and “did not correspond to the spirit of the revolution.” During this time, he underwent a severe depression and burned many of his works5. Not surprisingly, the dates of most paintings in this exhibition start from 1957 onwards.

This fruitful creative stage of the artist coincided with his move to Yerevan in 1962 along his wife Diana Ukleba-Grigorian. Especially through the works created in those years, it may be judged how Grigorian is different as a graphic artist. His graphic works differ both by their wider chromatic spectrum and the dynamics of composition. This was already noticeable in the early period, but the difference became more significant in the late creative period.

Topics and genres are more diverse in the graphic works, while compositional and color solutions are more courageous. Gevorg Grigorian Giotto seems to be “divided” into two artists even while dealing with the same subject or using the same compositional tricks. Among striking examples of this we find the painting Woman in Headgear (p. 69), the gouache pieces Kekela (p. 68) or Girls of Old Tiflis (p. 68), the canvas Spring (p. 56), and the graphic works Farewell (p. 51) and Double Portrait (p. 57).

awakening of the artist, personal exhibitions in Yerevan and Moscow, and many new works. In this period, Soviet Armenian art was enriched by the first abstract compositions, including those created by Giotto. The freer aesthetic thinking that appeared in the graphics of the 1960s (Decorative Motif, p. 70) found its unique continuation in a number of landscapes and abstract paintings (Abstraction, p. 76, Armenian Landscape, p.

77). In parallel to all this, the artist remains faithful to his style and to European art, including the aesthetic heritage of Cézanne or Picasso, as reflected in portraits (Narekatsi, p. 73, Last Self-portrait, p. 82), still lifes (Vase (architectonics), p. 81) or landscapes (Tiflis Landscape, p. 80). Despite all the parallels that may be noticed in his art, Giotto created an absolutely original world of art, reaching maximum, sometimes dramatic effect through minimal means.

This exhibition organized by the Cafesjian Center for the Arts through the inter-museum cooperation program gives the possibility to see and discover Gevorg Grigorian in a new way. Perhaps Giotto’s real “self” is hidden in the difference between his graphic and painting works. The exhibition Gevorg Grigorian GIOTTO is aimed at finding the answer to this question.

Art and Will

Gevorg Grigorian Giotto occupies a modest, rather unnoticed place in the cultural life of independent Armenia. A strong, courageous personality and will lived within that thin, small man, born in a nondescript neighborhood of Tiflis (where, incidentally, Niko Pirosmani had lived), who was not afraid of difficulties. The environment and the entourage used to unjustly mock the talented author of small paintings. Although at the time some prominent figures symbolizing the culture and politics of the Soviet Union spoke about him, Gevorgyan was among the poor Soviet intellectuals from the 1920s to the 1960s, living in a much more colorless reality than Gogol’s famous hero and much more despised than Nar Dos’ known character. Thisdrawing teacher of a secondary school was a few times stronger than the obscure “witty people” who surrounded him, owning properties and positions, as well asmany of his colleagues who expelled him several times from the Artists’ Union. This happened because nobody was interested in these safe and happy people, while the drawing teacher continued to be in the focus

of attention of newspapers and ideologues of the great power. But if in the 1920s Yakob Tugendkhold and others revered him as a painter of tiny, but original and interesting works, in the 1930s and in later years those who understood nothing about art identified his characters with monsters and tried to throw mud in the direction of that scrawny, but bright man and passionate devotee of art. Inspired by that, foolish and innocent children just threw stones behind this kind man.

The great Soviet culture of the 1920s occupies a place of its own in world civilization. Gevorg Grigorian Giotto was a tiny, but relevant fragment of those interesting times, who not only survived within the nightmare of the following decades, but also spoke of the gloomy times of his life in an allegoric and talented, original language. His dark colors representeda noble artist’s true word about time and place, which he achieved through his persistence and the love of his beautiful wife, poet and painter Diana Ukleba. The relative freedom of the 1960s, the oxygen that rushed from the barbwires into the

one-sixth part of the world inspired our painter too.

The articles of prominent people, the solo shows of 1965-1966 in Yerevan and Moscow, and the semi-open position of the iron curtain encouraged the artist. Well-known scholars of the empire, the talented Marietta Shaginyan, the eminent Lado Gudiashvili, and prominent specialists of various fields from both the USSR and abroad became his supporters. Discerning Yuri Lotman was interested in his art, and another famous name of semantics, the futurist artist and art critic Kiril Zdanevich (who discovered and publicized Pirosmani) wrote: “...

Grigorian’s graphics represents great art on small paper leaves.” In his article published in 1960, Zdanevich was the first to surmise that Giotto was a completely different, much more interesting name in the graphic arts.

By the way, the intent of presenting freedom and immediacy in graphics makes this exhibition different from other Grigorian exhibitions in various cities. He was able to create psychological characters on little canvases and paper pages like the masters of the

past and, at the same time, be free and unfettered in his lines and forms. The “generals” of official art in his generation were hostile to compositions that maintained freshness in the sketch,while modest and gifted artists stifled their thoughts and emotions by automatically covering the freshness of the canvas because of their surroundings and environment.

Gevorg Grigorian also occasionally loaded the canvas with oils and dried it, trying to emphasize the scale of reality. But he was surprisingly free in graphics, as he was living on the clouds. His free papers in this exhibition are only a small part of what ispreserved at the National Gallery of Armenia, the tip of the iceberg.Free painting was deprecated in the Soviet country, just as escaping from the concentration camp or breaking the barbed-wired border.

The little-bodied painter, author of small canvases, was endowed with that boldness, courage, and will.

Perhaps for that reason, the great men of the time who visited him, from the extremely delicate Leonid Engibarov to the famous Andrey Sakharov, could not conceal their reverence and emotion.

Nearly a decade after this first meeting they met again and were inseparable since then. Diana was Giotto's greatest muse and supporter. When Giotto was exluded from the Artists' Union and did not earn simply any money, Diana helped them survive; she was painting, publishing poems: romantic and lyrical, dedicated to Giotto.

I felt that I could not part with those paintings, with their author... so it has already been sixty years, and it will last as long as I am alive...

Գևորգ Գրիգորյան Ջոտտոյին մշտապես հուզել է հայոց պատմությունը, հատկապես հայ ժողովրդի համար դրամատիկ շրջանները: Դեռևս ավելի վաղ շրջանում նա ստեղծել էր աշխատանքներ, որ կապվում էին Հայոց ցեղասպանության հետ, սակայն դրանցից շատերը նա ոչնչացրել է 1930-ականների կեսերին: 1960-1970-ական թվականներին արվեստագետը շուրջ 20 կտավ է ստեղծում այդ թեմայով, այդ թվում այս նկարը 1965-ին՝ Հայոց Եղեռնի 50-ամյակի տարում: Gevorg Grigorian Giotto was very much interested in Armenian history, especially in dramatic periods. Even in the early years of his career he created series of pieces related to the Armenian Genocide, but most of those works were destroyed by him in the mid-1930s. In 1960-1970s he created a series of paintings, more than 20, on the same theme, including this one from 1965- the year of the 50th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide.
