ABOUT ROMAN WALKS The Project

R

oman Walks è la prima rivista italiana di arte e fotografia artistica, con l’obiettivo di stimolare la capacità creativa e incontrare quell’artista che è in ognuno di noi.

La gestazione del progetto editoriale ha avuto luogo a Roma, ma il messaggio della rivista, in italiano ed inglese, è rivolto ai lettori di tutto il mondo. Con il proposito di dar vita ad un nuovo “grand tour” italiano, contemporaneo, lanciando le prossime edizioni MilanVenice-Florence-Naples Walks nel 2019.

Il progetto artistico originale di Ca’ Art Studio (Gabriel Rifilato e Floriana Cason) è stato sviluppato grazie al contributo di idee della Image Factory romana (vedi pag. 68), diventando quindi una realtà editoriale grazie alla casa editrice Lozzi Editori (Roberto Lozzi) e al quotidiano La Notizia (Gaetano Pedullà) che con questa nota vogliamo ringraziare per la fiducia accordata.

An Artist's Discourse: Fragments. Welcome to our, and your, new magazine.

I

l primo dicembre 2018 c’è stato il nostro battesimo editoriale e Roman Walks è uscita per la prima volta nelle edicole, nelle librerie, nei luoghi di interesse turistico e su internet.

Il progetto di questo trimestrale su Roma, sull’arte, la cultura e la fotografia creativa (vedi qui al lato le caratteristiche editoriali), si presenta all’attenzione del pubblico dopo un lungo lavoro di esplorazione e ricerca durato durante tutto il 2018. Risale infatti al dicembre 2017, alla fiera Più libri più liberi, l’incontro tra il nostro Studio e la casa editrice Lozzi, dopo il quale ha cominciato a prendere forma l’edizione che avete tra le mani, battezzata da una riunione che ha avuto luogo lo scorso 9 giugno 2018, all’hotel Gianicolo di Roma, nella quale furono gettate le basi dell’accordo che avrebbe unito Ca’ Art Studio, la nostra factory di fotografia creativa di Floriana Cason e del sottoscritto, alle Edizioni Lozzi, di Roberto Lozzi, e al quotidiano La Notizia, di Gaetano Pedullà.

Durante l’intenso lavoro degli scorsi sei mesi, ci siamo resi conto che questo primo numero della rivista, per l’impegno che ci ha richiesto, l’accuratezza, il dettagliato, la meticolosità che ha reso indispensabile, ha rappresentato per noi un vero e proprio mandala di sabbia, fatto dai monaci tibetani. Ora che avete in mano la rivista, il nostro lavoro viene spazzato via. Tutto da annullare per ricominciare da capo. È la natura transitoria della vita materiale. L’impermanenza. C’è il secondo numero della rivista a cui pensare (in uscita il primo marzo 2019).

La farfalla, come recita Rabindranath Tagore, non conta i mesi ma i momenti, e ha tempo a sufficienza.

Roman Walks si ispira a Camera Work di Alfred Stieglitz e allo stile pittorialista che ha caratterizzato la storia della fotografia tra la fine dell’Ottocento e l’inizio del secolo successivo.

La mia passione per la fotografia è più grande che mai e Camera Work è una follia. Tutto quello che nasce dallo spirito sembra un follia in quest’epoca di materialismo (Alfred Stieglitz).

elcome to our - and your - new magazine Roman Art & Photo Walks.

Our editorial baptism took place on December 1st, 2018, and the first issue of Roman Walks was sent out to newsagents, libraries and tourist attractions, as well as being made available on the Internet.

The project for this quarterly magazine on Rome, art, culture and creative photography (see the editorial features on the left/right), was presented to the public after much exploration and research, which we were busy with throughout 2018. Our Studio first met with the Lozzi publishing house in December 2017, at the Più libri più liberi book fair, after which the issue you are now looking at began to take shape. The decisive meeting took place on June 9th, 2018, at the Gianicolo Hotel in Rome, during which we laid the foundations that would unite the Ca 'Art Studio, our creative photography factory established by Floriana Cason and the undersigned, Edizioni Lozzi, owned by Roberto Lozzi, and the newspaper La Notizia, owned by Gaetano Pedullà.

During our hard work over the past six months, we began to look at the commitment, accuracy, detail and meticulousness required to produce this first issue, as being similar to that required by Tibetan monks when making a sand mandala. Now that you have the magazine in your hand, our work is done. We have to wipe the slate clean and start over. This is the transitory nature of material life. Impermanence. Now there is the second issue of the magazine to think about (out March 1st, 2019).

The butterfly, as Rabindranath Tagore says, counts not months but moments, and has time enough.

Roman Walks is inspired by Alfred Stieglitz's Camera Work and the pictorial style that characterised the history of photography in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

My passion for Photography is greater than ever and Camera Work is mad. All that’s born of spirit seems mad in these days of materialism run riot (Alfred Stieglitz).

oman Walks is the first Italian art and fine-art-photography magazine, and it aims to stimulate creative ability and help find the artist that is within all of us.

The editorial project took place in Rome, but the magazine’s message - in both Italian and English - is directed at readers all over the world. Our intention is to create a new and contemporary Italian Grand Tour, and in 2019 we will be publishing further issues with the Milan, Venice, Florence and Naples Walks.

This original artistic project

EDITORIALE - FRAMMENTI DI UN DISCORSO ARTISTICO L’idea iniziale di questa rivista è diventata un progetto editoriale dopo circa un decennio di laboratori di fotografia creativa a Roma i quali, in buona parte, si sono espressi attraverso lo stile Neo-Pittorialista delle nostre immagini (a pag. 3), le mostre d’arte fotografica, con i tableau vivant e la staged photography (a pag. 7), al Teatro Tordinona di Roma, e le Passeggiate romane d’arte e fotografia con il “ritratto ambientato” (a pag.

5), nel centro storico della città.

Nel 2013 aveva preso forma un prototipo di questa pubblicazione con il titolo Il lato ignoto della fotografia, dalla quale esperienza nacque poi l’ Image Factory che, con il suo Manifesto programmatico, scelse come proprio stile, modalità espressive opposte al reportage, e alla sua vocazione della “rappresentazione della realtà”, per aderire a quella visione pittorialista che rendeva la macchina fotografica uno strumento creativo nelle mani dell’artista, così come lo sono il pennello e la tela nelle mani del pittore, lo scalpello e il marmo nelle mani dello scultore: “la rappresentazione delle proprie idee e della propria visione della realtà”.

L’Impressionismo ha dimostrato che vediamo tutti in modo diverso.

Questo ha fatto bene alla fotografia e ha dimostrato che dovremmo rappresentare quello che vediamo noi e non quello che vede l’obiettivo. Vediamo esattamente quello che siamo stati educati a vedere e, se siamo fortunati, qualcosa in più ma non molto. Dovremmo essere molto attenti nel decidere “cosa imparare. (Henry Peach Robinson).

Camminando per questo sentiero, è stato naturale incontrare il fotografo americano Minor White (pag. 59), continuatore dell’ideologia di Stieglitz, e simpatizzare con le idee artistiche di Man Ray (l’Arte non è fotografia), con le teorie di Betty Edwards (Il problema è “vedere”), e con i paradossi di Michael Michalko (Puoi lamentarti che le rose hanno le spine, oppure gioire del fatto che le spine hanno le rose). Quest’atlante del “pensiero creativo” in arte, e di come trasformare la creazione di immagini (quel banale “scattare una foto”), in uno strumento di cambiamento di se stessi, di metamorfosi, è contenuto negli articoli presenti tra le pagine 54 e 61, e rappresenta forse il messaggio principale che amerebbe lanciare la nostra rivista, creatura (consapevole) del daimon di James Hillman (e Platone).

Alcune pagine della rivista sono dedicate alle immagini prodotte dalla Image Factory, con l’idea di aprire una tribuna di confronto con i lettori e con le vostre idee sull’arte visiva e sulla fotografia: tra pagina 44 e pagina 53 la storica dell’arte Bruna Condoleo e la fotografa Livia Mazzani rispondono alla provocazione di Man Ray su Che cos’è una bella foto? (pag. 44), proponendo le loro immagini. I fotografi della Factory, subito a seguire, creano le loro Storie dietro le immagini basandosi sul pensiero che Gustav Flaubert (pag. 48) ha dedicato a Roma.

Con le sue 28 pagine, la Passeggiata romana d’arte e fotografia rappresenta il contenuto di maggior spicco e fascino della rivista: un inserto monografico, da collezione, primo di dodici percorsi nel cuore di Roma (il piano dell’opera è pubblicato sul retro del poster estraibile sulla Fontana di Trevi), alla ricerca di

The initial idea for this magazine only became an editorial project after about a decade of creative photography workshops in Rome, which - for the most part - were expressed through the NeoPictorialist style of our images (at page 3), photographic art exhibitions with tableaux vivants, and staged photography (at page 7), at the Tordinona Theatre in Rome, alongside Art and Photography Walks including an "enviromental portrait" (on page 5), in the old city centre.

A prototype of this publication was created in 2013, under the title The Unknown Side of Photography, and the Image Factory was the result of this experience. With its programmatic Manifesto, the Factory chose its style - using expressive methods that are the opposite to reportage - and its vocation, which is to "represent reality" and to adhere to the same pictorial vision that made the camera a creative tool in the hands of an artist - like a paintbrush and a canvas in the hands of a painter, or a chisel and marble in the hands of a sculptor: "the representation of one's own ideas and one's own vision of reality".

Impressionism has induced that we all see differently; it has done good to photography by showing that we should represent what we see and not what the lens sees. We see exactly what we are trained to see, and, if we are lucky, perhaps a little more but not much. We should be very careful what we learn. (Henry Peach Robinson).

By choosing this path, it was natural to come across American photographer Minor White (page 59), a continuer of Stieglitz's ideology, and to agree with Man Ray's artistic ideas (Art is not photography) and Betty Edwards’ theories (“Seeing” is the problem), or Michael Michalko’s paradoxes (We can complain that rose bushes have thorns, or rejoice because thorns have rose bushes). This atlas of "creative thought" in art, and of how to transform the creation of images (that banal "take a picture") into a tool to change oneself, to metamorphosize, is found in the articles on pages 54 to 61, and perhaps represents the main message with which we would like to launch our magazine; a creation that is aware of James Hillman’s (and Plato’s) daemon.

A few pages of the magazine are dedicated to photos taken by the Image Factory, with the idea of opening a discussion forum for readers and your ideas on visual art and photography: on pages 44 to 53, art historian Bruna Condoleo and photographer Livia Mazzani respond to Man Ray’s provocative question What makes a photo beautiful? (page 44), proposing their choice of images.

Next up are the Factory’s photographers, who create their Stories behind the images based on Gustav Flaubert’s thoughts on Rome (page 48).

The 28 pages of Roman Art & Photo Walk is the most interesting and fascinating part of the magazine: a monographic, collectible insert, with the first of twelve walks in the heart of Rome (the work plan is published on the back of the pull-out poster of the Trevi Fountain), in search of the vices and virtues of the Eternal City and the artist within us.

oma viene chiamata "la città eterna" perché tutto è così vecchio e sta ancora in piedi. Si dice sempre: "Roma non è stata costruita in un giorno". Forse sarebbe stato meglio, perché meno tempo ci metti a costruire una cosa, meno dura, meno si deve attendere per avere nuovamente lavoro, per rimpiazzarla. Rimpiazzare ciò di cui non si può fare a meno tiene la gente occupata. Quel che succede a Roma è che le donne finiscono tutte in cucina a preparare da mangiare e nelle fabbriche a cucire vestiti, mentre gli uomini non fanno niente perché i palazzi sono già stati fatti e non stanno ancora cadendo! Questo è il motivo per cui si vedono tanti uomini nelle strade di Roma, in qualsiasi ora del giorno e della notte.

LA FILOSOFIA DI Andy Warhol They call Rome "The Eternal City" because everything is so old and everything is still standing. They always say, "Rome wasn't built in a day."

Well, I say maybe it should have been, because the quicker you build something, the shorter a time it lasts, and the shorter a time it lasts, the sooner people have jobs again, replacing it.

Replacing necessities keeps people busy. The necessities, they always say, are food, shelter, and clothing. Now, in Italy they make a lot of food, and they make a lot of clothing, but food and clothing are only two-thirds of the necessities, the other third is shelter - and they're not making that because it's already been made. So what's happened in Rome is that the women wind up in the kitchens making all the food and in the factories sewing all the clothes, while the men don't do anything because the buildings are already built and they're not falling down! This is why you see so many men on the streets of Rome, Italy, at all hours of the day and night.

A Roma sono nate la nostra Image Factory e questa rivista. A Roma, come ama sbalordire il nostro Cesare De Bartolomei, non sai mai cosa trovi alzando un sampietrino. Ma noi non siamo fanatici di questa città, né pensiamo che sia “la più bella del mondo”; non rivendichiamo nessun primato, né cantiamo stornelli; non ci deliziamo del “ponentino” o del “biondo”Tevere, ma abbiamo la dignità degli artisti e degli intellettuali romani i quali, esterrefatti da immondizia e buche stradali, vorrebbero tornare a provare orgoglio per essere nati qui. La dignità di persone che hanno conosciuto e vissuto Roma come un luogo di creatività, tolleranza, divertimento, spiritualità, benessere, storia. E che, come racconta l’amico Luca Verdone, nell’appassionante intervista che ci regala alle pagine 38-43, vorrebbero tornare a sognare.

Per incontrarci, conoscerci e confrontarci, vi invitiamo a visitare la nostra mostra d’arte fotografica Vizi e virtù di Roma durante il mese di dicembre alla galleria d’arte Monogramma (in via Margutta 102), proprio dove ha avuto luogo la presentazione della rivista.

L’eternità di Roma sconcerta gli americani... Ad Andy Warhol, la cui mostra è in corso a Roma fino al 3 febbraio 2019, il primo numero di Roman Walks dedica “l’evento artistico” di maggior rilievo dell’inverno (alla pagina 63). In Rome, as our friend Cesare De Bartolomei loves to say, you never know what you might find under a sampietrino paving stone.

But we are not fanatical about this city, nor do we think it is "the most beautiful city in the world"; we don’t claim primacy, nor do we sing its praises; we do not delight in the gentle "ponentino" breeze or "the blond" Tiber, but we do have the dignity of Roman artists and intellectuals who - horrified by the amount of rubbish and number of potholes - would like to go back to feeling proud to have been born in Rome. The dignity of people who knew and experienced Rome as a place filled with creativity, tolerance, entertainment, spirituality, well-being and history. A Rome, as our friend Luca Verdone says in his fascinating interview on pages 3843, that they would like to go back to believing in.

So that we can meet, get to know each other and exchange ideas, why not visit our photographic art exhibition The Vices and Virtues of Rome, which will be held in December at the Monogramma art gallery (Via Margutta 102), where the magazine presentation took place. From January 2019, the exhibition will be on show in the foyer of the Tordinona Theatre (Via degli Acquasparta 16).

You can also participate in our Photo Walk to the Trevi Fountain with your DSLRs or smartphones, together with your companions, either in December 2018 or February 2019 (page 36): you will discover unexpected things about Rome and, above all, you will learn all about photography and the environmental portrait, together with our Image Factory photographers.

’è senz’altro una “Roma sparita” e una “Roma segreta” da conoscere e indagare, ma la Roma raccontata dalle Passeggiate d’arte e fotografia è forse la più affascinante, proprio perché è quella sotto gli occhi di tutti eppure “invisibile”. Le Passeggiate di Roman Walks sono state studiate per esplorare Roma camminando con una fotocamera, o uno smartphone, alla scoperta della cultura, dell’arte, della storia e dell’ambiente della città, in 12 percorsi che attraversano il centro storico e altrettanti rioni, piazze, fontane, con monumenti celebri in tutto il mondo.

here is definitely a "vanished Rome" and a "secret Rome" to discover and explore, but the Rome that is recounted through the Art and Photo Walks is perhaps the most fascinating, precisely because it is the Rome that is there for all to see and yet at the same time “Invisible”. The Roman Walks have been designed to explore Rome on foot with a camera, or a smartphone, to uncover the city’s culture, art, history and places, with 12 routes that cross the old city centre and many districts, squares and fountains where there are monuments that are famous all over the world.

Uno dei quartieri più famosi di Roma soprattutto per via dell’omonima fontana, ma è una zona ricca di storia, leggende e curiosità. Michelangelo Buonarroti visse gran parte della sua vita fra le vie del rione Trevi e morì in una piccola casa in piazza Macel de’ Corvi, che venne distrutta durante i lavori per la costruzione del Vittoriano.

Di origine antica, il quartiere era già molto popolato e vitale ai tempi della Roma Imperiale e passò sotto l’influenza ghibellina durante il medioevo. Durante il Cinquecento ed il Seicento, rione Trevi si arricchì di quelli che oggi sono importanti luoghi d’interesse: Palazzo Barberini e l’allora Rocca dei Papi, conosciuta oggi come Palazzo del Quirinale. L’aspetto che conosciamo oggi inizia a prendere forma nella seconda metà dell’Ottocento, quando dopo una serie di demolizioni e ricostruzioni, vengono aperte via del Tritone, via Barberini e il traforo Umberto I. Rione Trevi deve il suo nome, probabilmente, ad un antico incrocio di tre vie – trivium, per l’appunto – di origine romana che oggi viene individuato proprio nella piazza dove è situata la fontana di Nicola Salvi. Il richiamo a queste tre vie è presente anche nel suo stemma, costituito da tre spade parallele poste in diagonale.

Che i desideri espressi lanciando le monetine nella fontana si avverino o meno, quel che è certo è che l’intero ricavato dalle acque della fontana viene donato ad associazioni benefiche (come la Caritas) o destinato alla cura della città. Visto l’ingente afflusso di turisti, è necessario raccogliere le monete una volta al giorno: è un processo che avviene alle 8 di mattina attraverso delle pompe, dopo aver chiuso al pubblico l’accesso al monumento. Le monete raccolte vengono portate in laboratorio, lavate e poi suddivise nelle diverse valute, che alcune ditte si occupano di convertire in euro.

La Fontana di Trevi sorge sullo sbocco di una fonte che, secondo la leggenda, venne indicata ai soldati romani da una giovane fanciulla. Ancora oggi, la fontana attinge dall’acquedotto dell’Aqua Virgo, che nonostante le modifiche e le numerose manutenzioni è in funzione dai tempi dell’Antica Roma.

The Trevi District Trevi is one of Rome’s most famous districts, mainly because of its renowned fountain, but the area is also rich in history, legends and curiosities.

Michelangelo Buonarroti lived most of his life in the streets of the Trevi district, and he died in a small house in Piazza Macel de 'Corvi, which was destroyed when the Vittoriano was built.

This ancient district was already highly populated and vital during the period of Imperial Rome, and was then under the authority of the Ghibellines in the Middle Ages. During the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, the Trevi district was enriched by two buildings which today are important places of interest: Palazzo Barberini and the Rocca dei Papi, now known as the Quirinale Palace. The district we can see today started to take shape in the second half of the nineteenth century, when Via del Tritone, Via Barberini and the Umberto I tunnel were opened after a series of demolitions and rebuilding.

The Trevi district probably owes its name to an ancient Roman three‐way intersection – a trivium – which today is the square with Nicola Salvi’s fountain in it. These three streets are also represented in the district’s crest, which depicts three parallel diagonal swords.

Whether the wishes expressed when throwing the coins in come true or not is uncertain, but what we do know is that the entire proceeds from the fountain’s water are donated to charities (such as Caritas) or put towards maintenance works in the city. Given the huge influx of tourists, the coins have to be collected once a day: this is done at 8 am, after closing the monument to the public, using pumps. The coins are taken to a laboratory, where they are washed and divided into different currencies, which a few companies then convert into euros.

The Trevi Fountain stands on the outlet of a spring which according to legend was shown to Roman soldiers by a young girl.

The fountain still draws its water from the Aqua Virgo aqueduct, which, despite modifications and numerous maintenance works, has been in operation since the times of Ancient Rome.

There are curious anecdotes about the Trevi Fountain, which you will find a little further on, as well as stories about art and cinema which Giovanni Paolo Pannini and the authors of the Image Factory will tell you page after page.

uring my life I have been a set designer, an architect and a painter. The year 1711 was crucial to my artistic journey: it was the year I went to Rome for the first time, to study drawing, and I fell in love with the Eternal City at first sight, and of all my Muses it was the first to guide my hand on the canvas. It is therefore a great pleasure for me to be able to accompany you around the Trevi district, the first of our walks among the treasures of Rome.

Ah; the Trevi Fountain. Source of everlasting magic. Our walk through this district could only start from here; and it is not without a little pride that I say this. You should know that this masterpiece bears the signature of my son Giuseppe, who continued and completed the work of the great Nicola Salvi, who alas died before seeing his project finished. A pretty noteworthy completion, I would say: the Fountain has fascinated and continues to fascinate millions of tourists, both Italians and foreigners. Observe the grandiose perspective of the whole: look at the Fountain through my eyes; through my painting.

You will notice that I depicted the statue of Oceanus [PHOTO 7] as being much bigger than it actually is, and my (not very far-sighted) contemporaries criticised me a lot for that. Well, there is my vision in my painting. And I see the watery element in the Fountain triumph, with the inexhaustible gushes of water that make the whole square look blue [PHOTO 10-12]. Oceanus has arrived here, on Earth, at the centre of the world: and what better way to represent this victory, if

ella mia vita sono stato scenografo, architetto e pittore. Nel mio percorso artistico è stato cruciale l’anno 1711: mi sono recato per la prima volta a Roma, per studiare disegno, e da allora è stata una lunga storia d’amore con la Città Eterna, prima fra tutte le Muse nel guidare la mia mano sulla tela. È quindi un grande piacere per me potervi accompagnare alla scoperta del rione Trevi: prima delle nostre passeggiate alla scoperta dei tesori di Roma.

La Fontana di Trevi è una sorgente di imperitura magia. La nostra passeggiata attraverso questo rione non poteva che cominciare da qui; e lo dico non senza orgoglio. Dovete sapere che questo capolavoro porta la firma di mio figlio Giuseppe, che ha proseguito ed ultimato l’opera del grande Nicola Salvi, scomparso prima di poterne vedere la conclusione. Una conclusione quantomeno degna di nota, direi: la Fontana ha affascinato ed affascina milioni di turisti, italiani e stranieri. Osservate la grandiosa costruzione prospettica dell’insieme: guardate la Fontana con i miei occhi, attraverso il mio dipinto (qui al lato). Ed io, nella Fontana, vedo il trionfo dell’elemento acquoreo, con gli inesauribili zampilli che colorano di azzurro l’intera piazza [FOTO 10-12]. È Oceano che arriva qui, sulla terra, al centro del mondo: e quale modo migliore di rappresentare questa vittoria, se non dipingendolo con dimensioni titaniche? Egli si erge al di sopra della scogliera rocciosa posta alla base del palazzo e, come rappresentazione della sua duplice natura, talvolta placida, talvolta tempestosa, il cocchio a forma di conchiglia su cui si presenta è trainato da due cavalli: uno calmo [FOTO 6], l’altro irrequieto [FOTO 5], quasi imbizzarrito. Se il buon Dio vi ha dotato di vista acuta e spirito d’osservazione, noterete poi quattro grandi colonne corinzie, in corrispondenza delle quali si trovano altrettante statue allegoriche [FOTO 3-15], simboleggianti abbondanza di frutti, fertilità dei campi, ricchezza dell’autunno e amenità dei giardini: personificazioni dei più grandi desideri, e al contempo delle più grandi paure di una società contadina come quella del mio tempo, in cui mettere insieme pranzo e cena non era poi così scon-

tato.

Cedo ora la parola, momentaneamente, a chi meglio di me vi racconterà, in profondità, le meraviglie di quest’opera architettonica: la critica d’arte Bruna Condoleo.

La Fontana di Trevi: stupefacente connubio di arte e natura

not by painting him in colossal dimensions? He rises above the rocky cliff at the base of the palace; and, to represent his dual nature, at times placid and at others tempestuous, the shell-shaped chariot on which he stands is drawn by two horses: one calm [PHOTO 6], the other restless [PHOTO 5], almost frenzied. If the good Lord has blessed you with sharp sight and a spirit of observation, then you will notice four large Corinthian columns with four corresponding allegorical statues [PHOTO 3-15], symbolising the abundance of fruits, the fertility of fields, autumn produce and the joy of gardens: personifications of the greatest desires, and at the same time of the greatest fears of a peasant society, like that of my time, in which being able to put lunch and dinner on the table was not to be taken for granted.

The Trevi Fountain: an astonishing blend of art and nature

“I

envy you, tourist, you come, you feast on forums and ruins, then suddenly you discover the Trevi fountain, which is there all for you!": the words of one of the verses of Arrivederci Roma, written in 1955 by Garinei and Giovannini, with the music of Renato Rascel, perfectly embody the feelings of those who find themselves in front of the Fountain. The sculptural mass bursts into the city space amidst the din of rushing water, defying the hardness of the marble that turns into skin, rock and foliage: any tourist that emerges from the narrow side streets into the small square, is hit by a whirlwind of emotional and

La massa scultorea irrompe nello spazio cittadino [FOTO 2], circondata dal fragore delle acque e sfidando la durezza del marmo diviene pelle, roccia, fogliame: un turbinio di stimoli emotivi e visivi s’impadronisce di ogni turista che dalle strette vie laterali giunga nella piccola piazza, colpito dall’inaspettata e spettacolare visione [FOTO 12]. La “Mostra dell’Acqua Vergine” è una delle più conosciute e amate tra le innumerevoli fontane romane realizzate dal XVI al XVIII secolo; i motivi di questo successo sono molteplici. Non sono sufficienti la sua imponente mole e l’aura di fascino creata nel ‘900 dal cinema e dalla pubblicità a spiegarne l’universale attrattiva. Fin dalla sua realizzazione alla metà del ‘700, infatti, i viaggiatori del Gran Tour hanno descritto o dipinto la Fontana come il luogo dello stupore, perfetta simbiosi di realtà e artificio. Mitiche creature [FOTO 5-6] si ergono in mezzo all’acqua che proviene copiosa da uno dei più antichi acquedotti romani, fatto costruire da Marco Vipsanio Agrippa nel 19 a.C., denominato dell’Acqua Vergine.

The "Mostra of the Acqua Vergine" is one of most famous and loved of Rome’s numerous fountains built between the 16th and 18th centuries; the reasons for its success are manifold. Its imposing size and the aura of fascination created by 20th century cinema and advertising are not enough to explain its universal appeal. In fact, since it was built in the mideighteenth century, travellers on the Grand Tour have described or painted the Fountain as a place of wonder; a perfect symbiosis between reality and skill. Mythical creatures [PHOTO 5-6] stand in the middle of the abundant water, which flows from one of the oldest Roman aqueducts, the Acqua Vergine, built by Marcus Vipsanius Agrippa in 19 B.C. The history of the Trevi Fountain is long and troubled: it wasn’t until the Renaissance was well underway that the water, having reached the city centre, was used to create a modest rectangular basin, but it only became a prominent element in the city in the Baroque period. Pope Urban VIII Barberini commissioned Gian Lorenzo Bernini to enlarge the little square and build an important fountain that would be visible from his residence in the Quirinal Palace. The works, however, were interrupted by the Pope's death. Despite many popes seeming to be continuously committed to planning fountains, not only to embellish strategic sites but above all to demonstrate the power of their pontificate, 90 years passed by before Pope Clement

Fu Papa Urbano VIII Barberini a commissionare a Gian Lorenzo Bernini l’ingrandimento della piazzetta e la realizzazione di un’ importante fontana, visibile dalla sua residenza al Quirinale. I lavori, però, s’interruppero per la morte del Papa e malgrado progettare fontane sembra sia stato un impegno costante di molti pontefici non soltanto per abbellire luoghi strategici, ma soprattutto per manifestare il potere del proprio pontificato, tuttavia dovranno trascorrere ben 90 anni prima che Papa Clemente XII Corsini [FOTO 4], a seguito di un concorso bandito nel 1732, scegliesse il progetto di Nicola Salvi che trasformerà la Fontana di Trevi nella meraviglia che tutti oggi vediamo. Salvi, architetto e scenografo romano, ideò un prospetto maestoso, addossato a Palazzo Poli e contrassegnato da un arco centrale in cui si apre una profonda nicchia [FOTO 1]. Al suo interno si staglia imperiosa la figura di Oceano [FOTO 7], posta su una valva di conchiglia trainata da cavalli marini alati, perno di una scenografia in cui tritoni, piante di ogni specie [FOTO 8], dai capperi all’edera, dal fico d’India alla vite, e piccoli animali, una lumaca e una lucertola, si dispongono in modo dinamico sulla scogliera a disegnare lo scenario di un lembo di serenità olimpica, pervaso di intensa vitalità.

Ignari del mondo umano, i protagonisti dell’ariosa struttura sono gli eredi delle fontane barocche, coinvolti in uno spettacolo teatrale in cui architettura, scultura e natura si fondono armoniosamente. Il prospetto architettonico della Fontana, di classica compostezza, rammenta un arco trionfale romano, diviso da 4 semicolonne corinzie e articolato dal gioco chiaroscurale delle nicchie la-

terali; sopra un’ aggettante architrave s’imposta, infine, un arioso attico culminante con lo stemma papale. Al di sotto di Oceano, il dio del mare da cui secondo la mitologia omerica si generano tutte le acque del mondo, la scena si anima di forme in movimento, disposte sulla irregolare scogliera da cui sgorga, prorompente e scrosciante, la forza dell’acqua, fulcro palpitante di vita del progetto del Salvi. Il biancore del marmo e la luminosità del travertino, esaltati dalla limpidezza del cielo di Roma [FOTO 1-3], accentuano l’impressione di assistere all’apparizione di un mondo di mitica bellezza, osmosi di cultura e natura. Ispirato dall’empito scenografico berniniano

lizard and mythical creatures. This photo was taken in winter, at midmorning: stealing the spotlight - as you might expect - from hundreds of curious tourists. It was subsequently altered by desaturating and emphasizing the colour of the water.

XII Corsini (PHOTO 4), following a tender announced in 1732, chose the project by Nicola Salvi which would transform the Trevi Fountain into the wonder we can all see today. Salvi, a Roman architect and set designer, designed a majestic façade that leaned against Palazzo Poli, dominated by a central arch with a deep niche [PHOTO 1]. Inside this, the figure of Oceanus [PHOTO 7] stands inside a shell pulled by winged sea horses, which is the centre piece of a scene with tritons, numerous species of plants [PHOTO 8] - from capers to ivy, prickly pear and vines - and small animals, a snail and a lizard arranged dynamically on the rocks to create this scenario of a patch of stoic serenity, pervaded by incredible vitality.

Unaware of the human world, the protagonists of the spacious structure are heirs of Baroque

fountains, involved in a theatrical show in which architecture, sculpture and nature blend harmoniously. The architectural design of the Fountain, of classical restraint, is reminiscent of a Roman triumphal arch, divided by 4 Corinthian half-columns and broken up by the chiaroscuro elements of the lateral niches; finally, there is a spacious attic set on a jutting architrave, culminating in the Papal coat of arms. Below Oceanus, the sea god from whom - according to Homeric mythology - all the waters of the world are generated, the scene comes alive with moving shapes arranged on the uneven rocks, from which the force of the water gushes out, bursting forth thunderously; the pulsating fulcrum of life in Salvi’s project. The whiteness of the marble and the brightness of the travertine, intensified by Rome’s

PASSEGGIATA ESPERIENZIALE D’ARTE E FOTOGRAFIA | IL RIONE TREVI E LA SUA FONTANA: STUPORE E DESIDERIO Pietro Bracci, autore delle sculture, mitiga la plastica possanza dei giganti della Fontana dei 4 Fiumi con una leggerezza che rende l’insieme più dinamico. Un altro valente artista toscano, Filippo Della Valle, sostituisce l’esuberanza scultorea barocca con una sensualità del modellato che regala morbidezza ed eleganza alle allegorie della Salubrità e dell’Abbondanza, poste nelle nicchie ai lati di Oceano [FOTO 3-15], già permeate della nascente estetica neoclassica. Il ricordo di storie e leggende sorte attorno all’origine della Fontana è affidato ai due bassorilievi [FOTO 9] posti in alto sulla facciata, in cui Agrippa approva la costruzione dell’acquedotto e “una vergine” rivela ai soldati il luogo delle sorgenti, da cui forse proviene l’appellativo di Aqua Virgo! Incerta è anche l’origine della denominazione della Fontana: probabilmente Trevi deriva da trejo o trivio alludendo all’incrocio di vie in cui terminava l’Acquedotto.

Realizzata a più mani con una straordinaria coesione di intenti e di forme, la Fontana è l’opera che Nicola Salvi diresse fino alla morte, ma di cui purtroppo non vide la conclusione; fu l’architetto Giuseppe Pannini, assieme allo scultore Bracci, a completarla nel 1762, ben 30 anni dopo la sua ideazione.

EXPERIENTIAL ART AND PHOTO WALK | THE TREVI DISTRICT AND ITS FOUNTAIN: ASTONISHMENT AND DESIRE clear skies [PHOTO 1-3], accentuate the impression of witnessing the appearance of a world of mythical beauty, a type of osmosis between culture and nature. Inspired by Bernini’s scenographic urge, Pietro Bracci, who did the statues, softened the sculptural force of the giant statues in the Fountain of the Four Rivers, with a lightness that makes the overall impact more dynamic. Another talented Tuscan artist, Filippo Della Valle, replaced the Baroque sculptural exuberance with a sculptural sensuality that gave softness and elegance to the allegories of Health and Abundance, placed in the niches either side of Oceanus [PHOTO 3-15], which were already permeated with the emerging neoclassical aesthetics. The stories and legends arising around the origin of the Fountain have been incorporated into the two bas-reliefs [PHOTO 9] on the façade, in which Agrippa approves the construction of the aqueduct and "a virgin" shows soldiers where the springs are, which is perhaps where the name Aqua Virgo comes from! The origin of the Fountain's name is also uncertain: Trevi probably derives from trejo or trivio, alluding to the intersection of streets where the Aqueduct ended. Created by several different hands, with an extraordinary cohesion of intent and form, the Fountain is the masterpiece that Nicola Salvi oversaw right up to his death, but which he unfortunately never saw finished; it was completed in 1762, by the architect Giuseppe Pannini and the sculptor Bracci, 30 years after it had been designed.

This shot was taken in spring, at mid-morning, using a wide-angle lens and with the help of Jun Ichikawa.

Le acque che qui concludono il proprio percorso, a contatto con il candido marmo, sembrano quasi cantare [FOTO 11]. Un’armonia che ha ispirato, nel corso dei secoli, moltissimi artisti: fra i più importanti Franz Liszt, che si è lasciato guidare da questa musicalità, nella composizione della “Sinfonia dantesca” oppure Ottorino Respighi con il suo poema sinfonico “Fontane di Roma: La fontana di Trevi al meriggio”.

Come non nominare, poi, Federico Fellini: il regista ha riservato alla Fontana un ruolo da vera protagonista, con il bagno di Anita Ekberg ne “La dolce vita” divenuto poi una delle scene più memorabili del cinema italiano.

Ma la parola va ora nuovamente a chi vi racconterà qualche aneddoto su “La Dolce vita” di Fellini [FOTO 14]: lo storico della fotografia Diego Mormorio.

I fotografi della Dolce vita: “paparazzi”

T

utto cominciò a via Veneto, la notte del 16 agosto 1958, quando la parola paparazzo ancora non esisteva. Un gruppo di fotografi 12

passeggiava [FOTO 13-16] su e giù per la via, aspettando d’incontrare qualche personaggio, quando improvvisamente vide il deposto re d’Egitto Faruk seduto a un tavolo del Café di Paris, insieme alle sorelle Capece Minutolo. Uno dei fotografi si avvicina e lancia un colpo di flash. Il corpulento Faruk, pensando che si trattasse di un attentato, si alza di colpo e afferra l’autore del lampo, sollevandolo da terra. Un altro fotografo riprende la scena, e alla luce di questo nuovo lampo la confusione si fa enorme, con l’intervento dei camerieri. In pochi minuti, la polizia che, per via della vicinanza dell’ambasciata americana, è ben presente nella zona, arriva quasi immediatamente.

I

t’s time to say farewell to art critic Bruna Condoleo and continue on our journey. The Fountain is at the terminal point of the Vergine Aqueduct, completed during the reign of Augustus and still in use. The water that ends its journey here seems to almost sing when it comes into contact with the white marble [PHOTO 11].

A sense of harmony that has inspired many artists over the centuries: one of the most important of these was Franz Liszt, who allowed himself to be guided by this musicality while he composed his "Dante Symphony", or Ottorino Respighi, with his symphonic poem "Fountains of Rome: The Trevi Fountain at noon". And of course we mustn’t forget Federico Fellini: the director gave the Fountain a leading role in "La

Dolce Vita", with the scene of Anita Ekberg taking a dip, which become one of the most memorable in Italian cinema.

But now the floor goes back to someone who will tell you a few anecdotes about Fellini’s film " La Dolce vita" [PHOTO 14]: photographic historian Diego Mormorio.

t all began in Via Veneto, the night of August 16th, 1958, when the word paparazzo still hadn’t been invented. A group of photographers are walking up and down the street [PHOTO 13-16] waiting to come across someone famous, when suddenly they see Farouk, the overthrown king of Egypt, sitting at a table in the Café di Paris with his sister

Il “punto di visuale” si sposta improvvisamente per creare una tipica scena da “ritratto ambientato”: la figura umana è in primo piano, senza nessuna soggezione da parte del fotografo, e resta riconoscibile, quasi da protagonista, l’ambiente nel quale è stata fotografata. La scena è stata realizzata in primavera, a metà mattina, con l’uso dell’obiettivo grandangolare e la collaborazione di Jun Ichikawa che ha permesso a tutti i fotografi della Passeggiata di studiare qualche scatto in stile “Dolce Vita”.

Anthony Still, visibilmente ubriaco, si scaglia contro un fotografo. Malfermo sulle gambe, però, finisce per terra.

Pochi giorni dopo, le immagini di quella serata finiscono sui giornali e con esse comincia a crearsi la “leggenda” dei paparazzi, o come vennero definiti da qualche testata “fotografi assalitori”.

Inizialmente la parola paparazzo non fu un aggettivo, ma il nome del personaggio del fotografo nel film La dolce vita di Federico Fellini. Lo scrittore Ennio Flaiano che fu coautore del soggetto e della sceneggiatura, dice: “Una società sguaiata, che esprime la su fredda voglia vivere più esibendosi che godendo realmente della vita, merita fotografi petulanti. Via Veneto è invasa da questi fotografi. Nel nostro film ce ne sarà uno, compagno inseparabile del protagonista”. A interpretare questo ruolo venne chiamato l’attore Walter Santesso, che nel film si chiamò Paparazzo, nome trovato, dopo una lunghissima ricerca, da Flaiano in un libro di George Gessing. Seguendo il metodo di Flaubert, che si impegnava a lungo per trovare

Thinking that it is an attack on his life, the portly Farouk jumps up and grabs the photographer, lifting him off the ground. Another photographer takes photos of the scene, and the new flash of light creates even more confusion, with the waiters intervening. Due to the proximity of the American embassy and their heavy presence in the area, the police arrive within minutes. "Take it easy, take it easy. Nothing’s happened. We were just photographing King Farouk". It ended there. But a few hours later, the photographers came across the famous couple Anita Ekberg and Anthony Steele, who are arguing.

They start "shooting" their flashes. Anthony Steele, visibly drunk, lashes out against one of the photographers. Wobbly on his legs, however, he ends up on the ground.

A few days later, the photos of that evening end up in the newspapers and this was the beginning of the "legend" of the paparazzi, or "assailing photographers" as some headlines defined them.

Originally the word paparazzo was not an adjective, but the name of the photographer in Federico Fellini’s film La Dolce Vita. The writer Ennio Flaiano, who was co-author of the character and screenplay, said: "A society as troubled as ours, which expresses its frigid will to live more by showing itself off than by truly enjoying life, deserves to have petulant photographers taking pictures of it. Via Veneto has been invaded by these

The "viewpoint" changes suddenly to create a typical photo of a "environmental portrait": the human figure is in the foreground, not subjected in any way by the photographer, and the setting in which she was photographed remains recognisable, almost the protagonist. This shot was taken in spring, at midmorning, using a wide-angle lens and with the help of Jun Ichikawa, permitting all the photographers on the Walk to study a few "La Dolce Vita" style shots.

E fu un nome tanto azzeccato da venire presto usato per antonomasia. Per via del suffisso azzo, che nella lingua italiana, per dirla col vocabolario, è un “rafforzativo di un peggiorativo”, Paparazzo si addiceva perfettamente a quella categoria di fotografi petulanti che il film voleva rappresentare.

L’invenzione fu talmente perfetta che la parola paparazzo viene oggi usata in tutte le lingue.

L

asciamo il cinema e il racconto di Diego Mormorio, e torniamo alla Fontana di Trevi che è senza dubbio uno dei monumenti più famosi di Roma. Essere così celebri non può che rendere oggetto di voci, di dicerie che, acquisendo credibilità con il passare del tempo, divengono racconti e leggende popolari. Secondo la più famosa di queste, lanciando una moneta in acqua di spalle alla Fontana, e tenendo la mano destra sulla spalla sinistra, si avrebbe garantito il ritorno a Roma.

Lasciamocelo raccontare però, assieme ad alcuni altri aneddoti, da un storico cittadino di Roma Armando Moreschi.

Tre aneddoti sulla Fontana di Trevi La scultura dell’Asso di Coppe a Fontana di Trevi.

N

el XVIII secolo, Salvi, l’architetto della Fontana, frequentava il barbiere che è sulla destra della stessa. Questo barbiere, riteneva che la fontana stesse venendo su male, ma Salvi continuava a frequentarlo, e alla fine, gliela fece pagare, costruendo l’Asse di Coppe: un grande vaso ornamentale piazzato proprio in quel preciso punto dove al n° 85 in Via della Stamperia, rendeva impossibile la vista della fontana dalla Barberia. Si tratta in realtà, di una coppa dove i barbieri “montano” la schiuma del sapone da barba e in una notte la scultura fu sistemata proprio di fronte al negozio.

Il barbiere alla fine apprezzò il capolavoro, anche se, per vederlo doveva uscire dalla bottega.

photographers. And our film will have one of its own, the indivisible companion of the protagonist”.

Actor Walter Santesso was given the role of Paparazzo in the film, a name that Flaiano found, after much research, in a book by George Gessing.

Following in the footsteps of Flaubert, who spent a long time finding names that had semantic affinities with the characters, Fellini and Flaiano chose Paparazzo. And the name was so apt that it was soon used as a word par excellence. The suffix azzo, which in Italian, as the dictionary says, "reinforces a pejorative image", made the name Paparazzo perfectly suited to the category of petulant photographers the film wanted to represent. The invention was so perfect that today the word paparazzo is used in all languages.

L

et’s leave the cinema and Diego Mormorio’s story behind and return to the Trevi Fountain.

Fountain, which is undoubtedly one of the most

famous sites in Rome. And such fame made it impossible for it not be the subject of gossip; rumours that gained credibility with the passage of time, eventually becoming stories and popular legends.

According to the most famous of these, if you stand with your back to the fountain and throw a coin into the water over your shoulder, keeping your right hand on your left shoulder, one day you will return to Rome.

But let’s allow a long-standing Roman citizen, Armando Moreschi, to tell you about it, along with some other anecdotes.

Three Anecdotes on Trevi Fountain The Ace of Cups (Asso di Coppe) sculpture on the Trevi Fountain

I

n the Eighteenth century, Salvi, the architect who designed the Fountain, frequented the barber shop that was to the right of the same.

Gabriel Rifilato Foto 19 (pag. 28-29) Bartolomeo Pinelli è uno dei grandi pittori e incisori scelti da Roman Walks come ispiratori delle Passeggiate, per via delle sue immagini su Roma e l’etnografia dei romani. Il suo funerale ebbe luogo nella chiesa dei Santi Vincenzo e Anastasio, di fronte a Fontana di Trevi, dove sono conservate “le spoglie mortali del pittore de Trastevere”. Cercate quest’iscrizione nella chiesa: è piuttosto in alto e quindi la vostra foto verrà deformata dalla prospettiva.

Photo 19 (pag. 28-29) Bartolomeo Pinelli is one of the great painters and engravers that Roman Walks chose to inspire the Walks, because of his paintings of Rome and of the Roman etnography.

The Church of Saints Vincent and Anastasius, in front of the Trevi Fountain, preserves "the mortal remains of the painter of Trastevere". Look for this inscription in the church: it is rather high, so the perspective of your photo will be distorted. After you’ve taken the shot, however, you can balance it

In passato quando l’uomo era in partenza per il servizio militare, e quindi si allontanava da Roma per lunghi periodi, la coppia si recava alla fontana la sera precedente alla partenza. Qui si beveva da un bicchiere mai usato prima, e portato dalla ragazza, che veniva rotto in terra per rendere certi i due dell’ amore eterno.

Lancio delle monetine Tutti conoscono l’usanza di gettare monetine nella Fontana di Trevi [FOTO 20], ma pochi ne conoscono la reale tradizione. L’usanza è quella di lanciare nell’acqua tre monete dando le spalle alla fontana per far sì che si avverino tre desideri: la prima assicurerebbe il ritorno nella Città Eterna, la seconda garantirebbe l’incontro del vero amore e l’ultima invece realizzerebbe la possibilità di un matrimonio.

Oggi, tutte le monete gettate nella Fontana vengono raccolte dal Comune e donate a favore di poveri e bisognosi della città. Perciò, cari amici, non esitate ad effettuare il tradizionale lancio: 19

However, he made him pay in the end by building the Ace of Cups: a large ornamental vase placed in exactly the right point to make it impossible to see the fountain from number 85 in Via della Stamperia, that is, the Barber Shop. It actually depicts one of the bowls barbers used to "mount" the shaving foam and it took just one night to place the sculpture right in front of the shop.

In the end, the barber appreciated the masterpiece, even if he did have to leave the shop to see it.

Lover’s Fountain (Fontanella degli innamorati) On the right side of the fountain, there is a travertine basin into which water flows from two spouts: "The Lover’s Fountain" [PHOTO 17-18]. Legend has it that lovers who quench their thirst together from here will be inseparable and in love forever. In the past, when a man was leaving to do his military service, and would therefore be away from Rome for long periods, the couple would go to the fountain the night before his departure. He drank from a glass that had never been used before, brought by the girl, which was then smashed on the ground to ensure their eternal love.

rima di proseguire, ringraziamo Armando Moreschi e passiamo a osservate la piazza intorno a voi: di fronte alla Fontana si trova la Chiesa dei Santi Vincenzo e Anastasio [FOTO 21], degna di nota non solo per la sua posizione e per la sua bellezza ma anche per un particolare forse un po’ macabro per il gusto a voi contemporaneo: chiusi in urne di porfido, situate dietro l’abside di una cappella sotterranea, fatta costruire nel 1756 da Benedetto XIV, sono conservati gli organi interni di ventitré papi, da Sisto V (1585-90) a Leone XIII (1878-1903); ciò si spiega con la moda, rimasta in voga per secoli, di imbalsamare i corpi dei pontefici defunti e di conservarne a parte le viscere. Qui, poi, riposa il pittore ed incisore Bartolomeo Pinelli [FOTO 19], divenuto celebre per un gran numero di opere di rilievo, fra cui alcune splendide vedute di Roma.

La piazza di Trevi, come avete già avuto modo di vedere, è un vero scrigno: nascosta tra le vie ed i palazzi di Roma, si apre a rivelare la sua magia in modo quasi inaspettato.

Se state cercando un punto di vista più particolare su tanta meraviglia, non dovete far altro che recarvi presso l’hotel Fontana [FOTO 17 sullo sfondo]: in questo albergo, infatti, è presente una bellissima terrazza panoramica che vi permetterà di abbracciare con lo sguardo l’intera piazza.

Una volta ridiscesi, lasciatevi la Fontana alle spalle e proseguite alla volta di Vicolo del Puttarello. Lì, i lavori di ristrutturazione dell’ex Cinema Trevi hanno portato alla luce suggestive tracce della Roma antica: una domus di epoca imperiale, una cisterna per l’acqua (probabilmente il castellum aquae dell’Acquedotto Vergine) ed altri reperti.

Se dopo queste prime tappe avete bisogno di una pausa per rifocillarvi, sappiate che a pochi passi da voi ci sono svariate alternative in grado di soddi-

coins into the Trevi Fountain [PHOTO 20], but few know its true meaning. The tradition is to stand with your back to the fountain and throw three coins over your shoulder into the water, so as to make three wishes come true: the first ensures that you will return to the Eternal City, the second will ensure that you find true love, and the third will lead to marriage.

Today, all the coins thrown into the fountain are collected by the Council and donated to the poor and needy in the city. So, my dear friends, please feel free to adhere to the traditional coin tossing: you won’t do a penny of damage; on the contrary, that proverbial coin will help those who need it most.

Saints Vincent and Anastasius [PHOTO 21], noteworthy not only for its location and beauty, but also for something perhaps a little macabre for your contemporary taste: behind the apse of an underground chapel, commissioned by Benedict XIV in 1756, there are porphyry urns containing the internal organs of twenty-three popes, from Sixtus V (1585-90) to Leo XIII (1878-1903); the tradition of embalming the bodies of deceased pontiffs and keeping their bowels apart, remained in vogue for centuries. The tomb of painter and engraver Bartolomeo Pinelli [PHOTO 19], who became famous for a large number of important works, including some splendid views of Rome, is also there.

The Piazza di Trevi, as you have already seen, is a true treasure chest: hidden between the streets and buildings of Rome, it almost appears out of nowhere and reveals its magic unexpectedly. If you are looking for a different view of all this wonder, you just have to

The first thing that hits you when you enter the Church of Santa Maria Trivio, is the fresco by Antonio Gherardi on the vaulted ceiling: gold stuccowork, with depictions of the life of Mary, including the Assumption and the Circumcision of Jesus. Then there is the Nativity of the Virgin Mary, the Visitation, the Flight into Egypt, the scene of the Finding of Jesus in the Temple, the Adoration of the Magi and the Holy Family. Break the rules of the "perfect photo": forget about using a flash or tripods or "manual" mode; don’t worry about compositions and perspectives or whether it’s blurred or in-focus. Just allow yourself to be seduced by this ceiling.

Take your camera with you, put it in P mode (to feel freer), look at the ceiling through the viewfinder and take 100 shots without thinking. Winter, late morning, no flash. (As we have already said: never use a flash, or hardly ever: we are in a church ...).

Vi consiglio due soluzioni in particolare, entrambe nella vicina Via delle Muratte: il bistrot Baccano, ideale per chi di voi stesse cercando un locale elegante e dall’atmosfera retrò, per un pasto più raffinato; e l’Antico Forno [FOTO 23], per una pausa più frugale proprio di fronte alla Fontana di Trevi. Mangiare con questa vista, credetemi, è un’esperienza che non potete perdervi.

La prossima tappa della nostra passeggiata è la chiesa di Santa Maria al Trivio [FOTO 22-24]), situata in Piazza dei Crociferi. Qui si incontrano tre vie, ed una delle teorie più accreditate sull’origine del nome del rione deriva proprio da questa confluenza (“Trevi” da “trivio”, dunque: e da ciò nasce anche il nome della chiesa). Oltre alla bellezza dell’edificio in sé (e del suo splendido interno, impreziosito da otto cappelle, nonché dal simbolo del rione che la chiesa custodisce nel chiostro) [FOTO 26], questo luogo ha una magia tutta sua

Once down in the square again, leave the Fountain behind you and walk towards Vicolo del Puttarello.

Here you will find evocative remains of ancient Rome, brought to light during renovation works on the former Cinema Trevi: an Imperial domus, a water cistern (probably the Castellum Aquae of the Vergine Aqueduct) and several other finds.

If you’re ready to eat something and refresh yourself, there are several alternatives nearby: from this point of view, Rome has something for everyone. I recommend two places in particular, both in the nearby Via delle Muratte: the Baccano bistro, ideal for those of you wanting a really nice meal in an elegant, retro atmosphere; and the Antico Forno [PHOTO 23], for a lighter snack right opposite the Trevi Fountain.

Believe me, eating with this view is a not-to-miss experience.

The next stop on our walk is the church of Santa Maria al Trivio [PHOTO 22-24], in Piazza dei Crociferi. One of the most reliable theories on the origin of the district’s name derives from the fact that three streets meet in this point ("Trevi" deriving from "trivio” and hence the name of the church). In addition to the beauty of the building itself (and its incredible interior, embellished with eight chapels and the crest of the district the church watches over) [PHOTO 26], this place has a magic all its own because of the view it offers of Piazza di Trevi and the tourists standing in it: standing with your

In questo chiostro troverete da fotografare la storica insegna del Rione Trevi, con le sue tre spade, e un’affascinante struttura ad archi che è stata ripresa con un obiettivo grandangolare (viste le limitate dimensioni del chiostro), decidendo di includere come primissimo piano la palma che è al suo interno, per enfatizzare l’effetto prospettico di archi e vetrate. Ci siamo arrivati in inverno, a tarda mattina, e abbiamo scelto questa inquadratura bizzarra per restituire l’effetto di sorpresa che si prova entrando nell’ambiente.

The decision to include the palm in the foreground was to emphasise the perspective effect of the arches and windows. We went there one late morning in winter, and we chose this bizarre viewpoint to recreate the element of surprise you get when you come across the cloister.

Incontrerete negli occhi di chi la ammira lo stesso stupore che, poco fa, ha conquistato anche voi.

Poco più avanti, in Via del Mortaro, troverete il Teatro de’Servi [FOTO 25]. Dedicategli qualche istante: oltre ad essere incastonato in un ambiente silenzioso ed al riparo dal caos della grande città, merita una menzione per la sua storia.

Qui, infatti, sono passati alcuni dei più grandi attori teatrali italiani e non: inoltre la compagnia che lo ha inaugurato, nel 1957, era diretta nientemeno che dal grande Eduardo de Filippo.

Prima dell’ultima, suggestiva tappa del nostro percorso, vi consiglio di passare per un luogo davvero particolare. In Via del Nazareno, infatti, potrete ammirare alcuni resti dell’Acquedotto Vergine, ricostruiti fin dalle fondamenta dall’imperatore Claudio, dopo i danneggiamenti causati dal suo predecessore, il famigerato Caligola. Di fronte a questo sito c’è poi quella che potremmo senza esitazioni definire una “chicca”: una piccola porticina di legno, in apparenza identica a molte altre e senza nulla di speciale.

Ebbene, sappiate che al suo interno pare si celi addirittura il dispositivo che regola l’afflusso dell’acqua alla vicina Fontana [FOTO 27].

La nostra passeggiata si avvia alla sua conclusione, cari amici: e per finire in bellezza, ho pensato di farvi vivere

un’esperienza davvero magica.

La Rinascente di Via del Tritone ci offre molte sorprese: cominciando dal primo piano, in cui è custodito un resto murario dell’Acquedotto Vergine su cui vengono proiettate le informazioni e la storia di questa straordinaria infrastruttura [FOTO 28]; passando per i numerosi negozi in cui perdersi ed acquistare un po’ di tutto; per concludere, poi, sulla meravigliosa terrazza situata all’ultimo piano, da cui godere di una vista impareggiabile sul rione di Trevi e su tutta la Città Eterna.

Un momento magico, che spero di tutto cuore si trasformi in un ricordo prezioso, da conservare con cura.

back to the church, you will find yourself looking at the fountain from a very unusual perspective, able to see the same astonishment that you experienced in the eyes of all those looking at it.

A little further on, in Via del Mortaro, you will find the Teatro de' Servi [PHOTO 25]. Take a moment to look at it: besides being set in a silent area away from the chaos of the big city, it deserves a mention for its history.

Some of the greatest Italian and foreign names in theatre have acted here: furthermore, the company that inaugurated it in 1957, was directed by none other than the great Eduardo de Filippo.

Before the last, evocative stop on our journey, I suggest you go to a very special place. In Via del Nazareno you can admire some remains of the Vergine Aqueduct, completely rebuilt by emperor Claudius after the damage caused by his predecessor, the notorious Caligula. Opposite this site, there is also what we can without a doubt define a "gem": a small wooden door, seemingly identical to many other doors and having

nothing special about it. Well, you should know that it seems to conceal the device that regulates the inflow of water to the nearby Fountain.

We are coming to the end of our walk, my dear friends: and to end in style, I thought I would offer you a truly magical experience. The Rinascente shopping centre in Via del Tritone is full of surprises: starting from the first floor, where there are the remains of part of the wall of the Vergine Aqueduct, onto which the information and history of this extraordinary infrastructure are projected. After taking a leisurely walk around the numerous shops, which sell a little bit of everything, you can go to the wonderful terrace on the top floor, where you can enjoy an unrivalled view of the Trevi district and the entire Eternal City. A magical moment, which I hope with all my heart becomes a precious memory that you preserve forever.

Photo 27 (pag. 34-35) - A few feet below Via del Nazareno, you can see the series of arches that took the water of the Acqua Vergine aqueduct through the city to the baths. This fourteenth-century door is on the opposite side of the street, and above it (not visible in the photo) is the coat of arms of Pope Sixtus IV. The door leads to the ancient part of the aqueduct, with a passage that is still used to carry out maintenance work.

The shot was taken late one morning in winter, with a frontal, geometric composition and no lines of perspective in order to emphasise the variety of shapes, stones, masonry and tonal gradation.

I

l documentario è solo una parte dei miei interessi, racconta Luca Verdone, io sono venuto al mondo per essere un uomo curioso, soprattutto della forma e dei colori. il documentario è praticamente un modo di vedere la realtà filtrata naturalmente dal mio occhio e di conseguenza un modo anche di approfondire i vari argomenti.

Sono anche un appassionato di Storia; cioè io vedo sempre l'uomo in prospettiva per quello che è e per quello che è stato; cerco di immaginarne il futuro perché conoscere tutto del passato significa anche capirne il futuro, per quanto esso sia imprevedibile ed insondabile.

Quale influenza ha avuto, per te come persona e nella tua attività, essere romano e vivere a Roma?

Essere nati e vissuti a Roma significa avere uno sfondo sfavillante, importante, storico, addirittura intrigante anche dal punto di vista della curiosità che uno può ricevere. Roma è tutto questo: passato, presente e futuro.

Roma è l'emblema di quello che in questo momento è la vita in generale dell'umanità sulla terra; io lo immagino un po' da un punto di vista privilegiato che quello, appunto, della nostra Città Quando esci dalla tua casa in via del Pellegrino, nel centro storico di Roma, dove vai e cosa ti piace fare?

Quando esco da casa mia, la prima cosa che vorrei sempre fare è andare all'Oratorio dei Filippini (Piazza della Chiesa Nuova, Rione Parione). Perché quell’ampio spazio con la Chiesa Nuova accanto (Santa Maria in Vallicella), alla quale è stata affiancata quella meraviglia architettonica ideata dal Borromini, mi dà grande gioia. ocumentaries are just one of my interests, says Luca Verdone. I was born to be a curious man, especially about form and colours. Documentaries are essentially a way of seeing reality filtered naturally through my eyes, and consequently also a way to explore various topics. I am also passionate about History; in the sense that I always see humankind for what it is and what it has been. I try to imagine the future, because knowing everything about the past also means being able to understand the future, even if it is unpredictable and unfathomable.

What influence has being Roman and living in Rome had on you as a person and on your work?

Being born and bred in Rome, gives you a glorious, important and historical background, even intriguing, also in terms of the curiosity that it can inspire. Rome is all this: past, present and future. Rome is the emblem of humanity’s life in general on earth today; I imagine it from a privileged point of view; that of our City.

When you leave your house in Via del Pellegrino, in Rome’s old city centre, where do you go and what do you like to do?

The first thing I always want to do when I go out is go to the Oratorio dei Filippini (Piazza della Chiesa Nuova, in the Parione District). Because that large space with the Chiesa Nuova next to it (Santa Maria in Vallicella), with Borromini’s architectural wonder alongside, gives me great joy. For me, seeing that

Quindi se devo fare colazione o andare a pranzo vado là. Il mio ristorante preferito è in piazza Sforza Cesarini, proprio di fronte a piazza della Chiesa Nuova.

Cosa c’è sotto un sampietrino del Rione Trevi?

Sotto un sampietrino del rione Trevi c'è la lampada di Aladino che come la strofini tira fuori qualche immagine meravigliosa che si tramuta in oggetto vivente. In una forma vivente.

Il tuo primo cortometraggio è stato “Matrimonio in Santa Maria in Trastevere”? È stato un lavoro straordinario, riuscitissimo.

Nel 1994 circa, inventai una formula attraverso la quale poter raccontare i monumenti e le opere artistiche delle chiesa con un linguaggio simile a quello di una fiction;

Yes it was an extraordinary work, very successful. In around 1994, I invented a formula for talking about monuments and artistic works in churches, which used a similar style to that of a fiction film; there were actors who had a script to describe the monuments and beautiful pieces

c'erano degli attori che, recitando secondo copione, descrivevano i monumenti e le bellezze presenti all’interno della chiesa.

Il tuo ultimo docu-film, invece, è su Giorgio Vasari.

Avevo scritto un progetto per la RAI in occasione del quinto centenario della nascita di questo incredibile personaggio, nato nel 1511. Ma il motivo vero è che ci sono sempre dei motivi contingenti nel fare, nel produrre qualcosa: le cose non nascono così, ci sono incontri “junghiani” che le stabiliscono, le determinano. Perché, ad esempio, Raffaello era più famoso di Michelangelo all'inizio del ‘500 è un mistero. Probabilmente perché aveva delle congiunzioni e degli influssi astrali superiori a quelli di Michelangelo, il quale nel tempo ha acquistato molta più importanza. Questo perché le mentalità cambiano, le coincidenze si modificano, gli incontri mutano.

Qualche anno prima ti eri occupato di Futurismo...

Avevo fatto questo documentario che era più che altro un omaggio a mio padre.

Mio padre è stato uno dei più importanti storici del Futurismo negli anni 50; aveva riscoperto gli artisti del Futurismo ancora sconosciuti alla critica ed alla cultura italiana. Lui li ha ritrovati, li ha riesumati e ha ridato fama a tutti quei vecchi artisti che ormai vivevano nell'ombra.

And your last Docu-film was about Giorgio Vasari.

I had written a project for RAI to celebrate the fifth centenary of the birth of this incredible man, born in 1511. But the real motive is that there are always contingent reasons for doing something, for producing something: things aren’t just created like that, there are "Jungian" encounters that establish them; determine them. Why, for example, Raphael was more famous than Michelangelo at the beginning of the sixteenth century is a mystery. It was probably because he had a greater conjunction and astral influence than Michelangelo, who became more important over time. This is because mentalities change, coincidences undergo transformation and encounters evolve.

A few years before you were interested in Futurism...

I made a documentary that was more like a tribute to my father. My father was one of the most important historians of Futurism in the 1950s; he rediscovered Futurist artists who were still unknown to Italian critique and culture. He found them, unearthed them and made all those old artists who had been living in the shadows famous. For example, I remember meeting exceptional artists like Arnaldo Ginna (Ravenna 1890 - Rome 1982), painter and director par excellence.

Sono uno che guarda le meraviglie e immagina dentro di sé.

Tra Cinema e Fotografia...

Il cinema è soprattutto un'immagine in movimento dove si ricreano tempi e spazi, mentre la fotografia è fissa e deve fissare un'immagine unica. La fantasia è la cattura di un momento, è un ladro che ruba qualcosa. Devi “rubare” con destrezza e c’è solo un momento in cui l’obiettivo può farlo.

Oltre ad aria inquinata, si respira “creatività” a Roma?

Roma è piena di creatività che blocca tutti quelli che vi si accostano con intenzioni di accoglierla in sé. Cioè, quelli che vogliono essere creativi a Roma e non si adattano alla potenza creatrice e creativa di Roma non combinano niente. Rimangono bloccati, perché non ne assumono il senso. Non si appropriano di quel momento di Verità.

Between Cinema and Photography...

Cinema is above all a moving image in which time and space are recreated, while photography is stationary and has to capture a unique image. Imagination is about capturing a moment; it is a thief who steals something. You have to "steal" skilfully and there is just one moment when the lens can do it.

Is it possible to breathe in “creativity” in Rome, smog permitting?

Rome is full of creativity that halts all those who approach it with the intention of embracing it. That is, those who want to be creative in Rome, but who don’t adapt to Rome’s power of creator and creativity, will never achieve anything.

They remain blocked, because they don’t accept the feeling. They don’t take possession of that moment of Truth.

INCONTRANDO ARTISTI A ROMA: LUCA VERDONE lentata e oltraggiata continuamente dagli abusi edilizi, dall’incuria delle Amministrazioni comunali, dall'ignoranza dei turisti e degli abitanti di Roma. Un'ignoranza che cresce nel tempo.

Oramai il cittadino romano di una volta non esiste più.

Pensa che nel quartiere mio, che è diventato un’enorme zona per bed and breakfast e Airbnb, non ci sono più gli amici di un tempo. Ormai chiunque abbia una casa a Roma se la tiene per affittarla agli stranieri.

Suona come una mezza follia lanciare una rivista come “Roman Walks” alla ricerca dell’anima di questa città?

No, non sarà mai una follia, perché le passeggiate a Roma sono talmente interessanti, così cariche di storia che ne varrà sempre la pena. Bisogna combattere invece le amministrazioni, i dirigenti delle municipalizzate. Bisogna lavorare sui giovani, ma intendo proprio dalle elementari. Bisogna dire loro: “Guarda, non fare come tuo padre, che la sera quando esce di casa butta l’immondizia all’angolo della strada. Non lo devi fare. Cerca di capire che Roma è la patria degli imperatori, dove è nato l’Impero, dove c’è stato il primo Papa!

Tra la famiglia Verdone e Alberto Sordi c’è stata una lunga conoscenza.

Ho voluto molto bene ad Alberto Sordi. Era un fenomeno. È stato un grande amico ed una bellissima persona, anche dal punto di vista umano. Era un solitario, Alberto. Quello che si dice sulla sua presunta avarizia non è vero. Alberto era avaro con se stesso per poter aiutare di più e meglio gli altri, in altre forme. Lavorava 365 giorni l’anno perché faceva due, a volte tre film all’anno e l’ha fatto per 60 anni… Non aveva tempo per far altro. Come essere umano era simpaticissimo, assolutamente gioviale, bonario e disposto allo scherzo. Gli scherzi telefonici che faceva Alberto erano esilaranti.

is, and you mustn’t abuse it like it is continuously abused and insulted by unauthorised building works, by the negligence of local authorities, by the ignorance of tourists and Rome’s inhabitants themselves. An ignorance that increases over time.

The Roman citizen of the past no longer exists. In my neighbourhood, which is now overrun with bed and breakfasts and Airbnb houses and flats, there are no longer friends living near each other like they used to. Today anyone who owns a house in Rome, only keeps it to rent to foreigners.

Do you think it’s madness to launch a magazine like "Roman Walks", in quest of this city’s soul?

No, it wouldn’t ever be madness. The walks in Rome are so interesting, so full of history, that it will always be worth it. What we need to do is fight the administrations, the local authority managers. We need to work on young people, and I mean starting with primary school children. We need to tell them: "Look, don’t do what your father does, leaving the garbage on the street corner when he goes out. You mustn’t do it. Try to understand that Rome is the homeland of emperors, where the Empire was born, as well as home to the first Pope!”

The Verdone family knew Alberto Sordi for a very long time, didn’t it?

I cared about Alberto Sordi very much. He was a phenomenon. He was a great friend and a beautiful person; a beautiful human being. Alberto was a loner. The rumours about him being stingy were not true. Alberto was only stingy with himself so that he could help others more and better, in other forms. He worked 365 days a year because he did two, sometimes three films a year, and he did that for 60 years ... He didn’t have time to do anything else. He was a really nice human being, always jovial, good-natured and ready to pull a prank.

Mia madre gli disse: “Alberto, lo sai che al Giulio Romano, la scuola dove insegno, a Trastevere, hanno ritrovato la tua pagella? Ma perché non vieni a fare una visita, ché ti facciamo una grande festa?” E lui rispose “Vabbè Rossana, io vengo.”

Ci andò veramente. Fece felice tutta Trastevere. Questa è l’ultima cosa che riuscì a fare per mia madre, per la quale aveva una vera e propria passione.

Noi ricordiamo questo essere meraviglioso che purtroppo ci ha lasciato quando io avevo 20 anni e mio fratello 23.

Alberto’s prank phone calls were hilarious.

He was a mixture of all Italian qualities and defects. Once Alberto came to our house for dinner. My mother said to him: "Alberto, did you know that they found your report card at Giulio Romano, the school in Trastevere where I teach? Why don’t you come and visit? We’ll throw you a big party." And he replied, "Okay, Rossana, I'll come."

And he really did go. He made the whole of Trastevere happy. This was the last thing he had the chance to do for my mother, who he was truly passionate about. We remember this wonderful being, who unfortunately died when I was 20 and my brother 23.

e ci chiediamo quando una foto sia definibile “bella”, i pareri sono ovviamente diversi, tuttavia, al di là delle differenze fra generi fotografici, ciò che colpisce di una foto, a mio avviso, non è la verosimiglianza con il reale.

Claude Monet, padre dell’Impressionismo francese, nel periodo della sua maturità artistica aveva intuito che non potesse essere la semplice percezione visiva, secondo l’estetica impressionista, a rivelare la realtà, poiché dietro un occhio esiste sempre una complessità di emozioni che filtrano inevitabilmente l’esperienza del reale. Anche una foto non documenta sic et sempliciter ciò che inquadra l’obiettivo, ma porta con sé l’interiorità dell’autore, il suo vissuto, la sua sensibilità, elementi che interferiscono con la mera riproposizione del dato oggettivo. Una foto deve essere capace di offrire prospettive inattese, di aprire nuovi orizzonti espressivi e culturali, di mostrare in luoghi mille volte percorsi ciò che altri occhi non avevano ancora percepito.

impressionist aesthetics, could not be captured through simple visual perception, because the complexity of emotions behind the eye inevitably filter how reality is experienced. A photo does not document sic et simpliciter what can be seen through the lens either. It incorporates the photographer's interiority, experience and sensitivity, elements that interfere with the mere reproposal of the given objective. A photo must be able to offer unexpected perspectives, to open new expressive and cultural horizons, to reveal that which other eyes have not yet perceived in places that have been visited a thousand times.

f we ask ourselves when a photo can be described as "beautiful", there are obviously different opinions, however, in my opinion, aside from the differences between photographic genres, it is not their verisimilitude that strikes us.

CHE COS’È UNA BELLA FOTO

Robert Mapplethorpe n confronto tra le personalità del fotografo newyorkese Robert Mapplethorpe e dello scultore francese Auguste Rodin può risultare audace, ma i due artisti hanno amato in ugual misura il nudo come proiezione assoluta della bellezza plastica e pertanto i loro linguaggi si avvicinano in modo sorprendente. Michel Reed, foto di un nudo maschile di schiena, è molto simile a L’uomo che cammina, un bronzo di Rodin (nella foto piccola) con cui l’opera dialoga inaspettatamente.

“Io vedo le cose” diceva il fotografo, “come delle sculture, come delle forme che occupano uno spazio”. Mapplethorpe pervade le sue raffinate stampe al platino di un anelito verso la perfezione formale, Rodin vuole captare la vitalità della materia; il primo costruisce il soggetto attraverso una ricerca minuziosa delle pose e delle inquadrature fino a raggiungere un’armonia pura e ordinata; l’altro esalta maggiormente gli stati emotivi, ma ambedue reiterano fino all’ossessione i temi formali ed estetici prediletti: movimento e tensione, nero e bianco (bronzo e marmo in Rodin), ombra e luce, erotismo e dannazione.

Nati a poco più di 100 anni di distanza, in epoche e in continenti lontani (Europa e America), Rodin e Mapplethorpe ebbero vite molto diverse per status sociale, amori, opportunità professionali (il fotografo newyorkese morì di AIDS a soli 43 anni), tuttavia hanno mostrato interessi identici per la rappresentazione del corpo umano (nel caso di Rodin anche una passione per la fotografia!), divenuto il medium quasi unico della loro espressività fino al rifiuto di ogni orpello e di ogni elemento superfluo, giungendo spesso al limite dell’astrazione.

L’amore per Michelangelo li accomuna, malgrado il fotografo riveli un’assonanza anche con altri scultori del Rinascimento, soprattutto con il Giambologna, raffinato indagatore del dinamismo corporeo. Per entrambi è la luce, mezzo da cui dipendono gli effetti virtuosistici dei chiaroscuri, l’elemento essenziale del loro linguaggio, capace di trasfigurare forme umane e cose in vibrazioni quasi immateriali. Una medesima tensione lineare e un analogo pathos formale permettono ai due artisti di accedere a una dimensione creativa che oltrepassa le frontiere delle rispettive forme d’arte. Nella foto di Michel Reed i contrasti luministici creano intense penombre fino a occultare la testa e le braccia del nudo, risucchiate nel buio dello sfondo: uomo o statua antica, vita o morte?

Il corpo vibrante e i muscoli tesi denunciano la vita, ma realtà e immaginazione s’intrecciano in questa opera misteriosa che rivela quanta ricchezza espressiva possa celarsi in una foto, la cui forza evocativa consente al fruitore di intraprendere un percorso nella memoria personale, nei meandri dell’inconscio, nel mondo dell’arte e di approdare a un altrove che lo stesso autore della foto ignora.

A comparison between the personalities of New York photographer Robert Mapplethorpe and French sculptor Auguste Rodin may prove daring, but the two artists both loved the nude as being the perfect projection of sculptural beauty, and therefore their languages are surprisingly similar.

Mapplethorpe’s Michael Reed, a photo of the back of a male nude, is very similar to Rodin’s The Walking Man in bronze (in the small picture), creating an unexpected dialogue between the two. "I see things like they were sculptures. It depends on how that form exists within the space", said the photographer. Mapplethorpe infuses his elegant platinum prints with a yearning for formal perfection, while Rodin seeks to capture the vitality of the subject; the former creates the subject through a meticulous search for the right poses and shots, until pure and orderly harmony is achieved; the other brings out emotional states more, but both reiterate, to the point of obsession, the favoured formal and aesthetic themes: movement and tension, black and white (bronze and marble in Rodin’s work), shadow and light, eroticism and damnation.

Born a little over 100 years apart, in distant eras and on different continents (Europe and America), Rodin and Mapplethorpe had very different lives in terms of social status, lovers and professional opportunities (the New York photographer died of AIDS at just 43), nevertheless they had an identical interest in the representation of the human body (Rodin's also had a passion for photography!), which became almost the only medium of their expressivity, both eventually rejecting any kind of adornment or superfluous elements and often reaching the limit of abstraction.

They are united by their love for Michelangelo, although the photographer reveals a certain resonance with other Renaissance sculptors, especially Giambologna, whose works focused on the dynamic movement of the body. The essential element of both their styles is light, the medium on which the virtuosic effects of chiaroscuro depend, which is capable of transforming human forms and objects into almost immaterial vibrations. The same linear tension and a similar formal pathos permits the two artists to access a creative dimension that goes beyond the boundaries of their respective art forms. In Michael Reed’s photo, the contrast between light and shade create intense penumbras that hide the head and arms of the nude, which are sucked into the darkness of the background: man or ancient statue; life or death? The vibrating body and the tense muscles proclaim life, but reality and imagination intertwine in this mysterious work that reveals just how much expressive richness can be hidden in a photo, whose evocative power allows the viewer to embark on a journey through their personal memory, through the mazes of the unconscious and the world of art, arriving somewhere that the photographer himself ignores.

aniel Pennac: “Silenzi luminosi che dicono più di quel che tacciono... Il mondo intero è in quel che diciamo e tutto illuminato da quel che omettiamo...”. Forse la fotografia entra nello stesso istante in cui Daniel Pennac frena il suo scrivere. La fotografia coglie quella luce e la trasforma. La fotografia è il risultato dell’imprimersi della luce. La luce e le ombre parlano.

La fotografia è tecnica e arte. L'arte fotografica racconta un sogno o cerca di riprodurre la realtà, è un potente mezzo per interpretare, attraverso la luce, quel silenzio di cui parla Pennac. La fotografia riempie il silenzio, interpreta il silenzio, trasmette emozioni dettate da quel silenzio.

La fotografia è emozione. Quando guardiamo una fotografia noi concentriamo la nostra attenzione nel capire cosa ci sta trasmettendo, quali emozioni noi stiamo ricevendo, cosa ci sta rivelando. Quando cammino per la strada il desiderio di fotografare e riprendere istanti di un movimento che non ha mai fine è forte e coinvolgente. Mi lascio coinvolgere... È il movimento della vita che mi attira e mi affascina. Ho desiderio enorme di cogliere l'attimo, cogliere l'istante irripetibile. Cogliere la vita nel suo essere e nella sua profondità.

Istanti non consueti, istanti che rispecchiano la realtà del momento, istanti che non si ripetono.

La fotografia è cogliere l'attimo. Quando quell'attimo fotografato cattura le nostra attenzione, quando ci procura emozioni, quando stimola il nostro pensiero, quando sollecita la nostra immaginazione... quando una fotografia è capace di smuovere, è proprio in quel momento che si produce bellezza.

Daniel Pennac: "Luminous silences that say more than what they don’t say... There is an entire world in what we say and it is all illuminated by what we omit ...". Perhaps photography comes in the moment Daniel Pennac pauses in his writing. Photography captures that light and transforms it. Photography is the result of light leaving an impression. Light and shadows speak.

Photography is technique and art. Photographic art recounts a dream or tries to reproduce reality; it is a powerful way to interpret, through light, the silence that Pennac talks about. Photography fills the silence, interprets the silence, transmits emotions that are dictated by that silence.

Photography is emotion. When we look at a photograph, we focus our attention on understanding what it is transmitting to us, what emotions we are receiving, what it is revealing to us. When I walk down the street, the desire to photograph and film moments of endless movement is strong and captivating. I allow myself to become involved ... It’s the movement of life that attracts and fascinates me. I have a huge desire to seize the moment, to seize an unrepeatable second. To grasp the essence and depth of life. Unusual moments that reflect the reality of that moment; moments that never happen again.

Photography is seizing the moment. When that photographed moment captures our attention, when it gives us emotions, when it stimulates our mind and our imagination ... when a photograph is able to move us, it is in that moment that it becomes beautiful.

I

nterpretare oggi la frase di Flaubert attraverso 5 foto, i cui autori hanno voluto evidenziare alcune parole contenute nella frase, ponendosi come trait d’union tra i vizi e le virtù.

Roberto Scardoni (in questa pagina), immortala la storicità dei vizi e delle virtù di una Roma antica. La quotidianità, sembra rispecchiare molto il passato e la foto sembra volerci ridare la realtà di oggi. Sandro Lombardo (pag. 50) pone il suo obiettivo sul contemporaneo e sul sociale, attraverso la street art, forma di arte contemporanea che si scontra con l’indifferenza di due passanti anziani simbolo di una romanità “doc”. Floriana Cason (pag. 51) evidenzia il Mito, fotografando un Charlie Chaplin nostrano a Piazza Navona. Il Mito come rifugio, un po’ come nella Roma imperiale, dove l’uomo senza forza, trova quest’ultima proprio nella figura mitologica e riemerge. Per Livia Mazzani (pag. 52), il ricordo, la bellezza o forse la grande bellezza, viene immortalato in bianco e nero in una performance di artisti di strada, in una piazza storica di Roma. La realtà catturata in un attimo. Gabriel Rifilato (pag. 53), coglie l’essenza di Roma, il sacro e profano viene evidenziato non in maniera classica, ma attraverso l’epigrafe sacra contenuta nella più antica chiesa di Roma, Santa Maria in Trastevere, sporca di sangue e coperta da una figura femminile, la cui posa vuol fare riecheggiare la sacralità e nello stesso tempo la lussuria.

Sandro Lombardo (p.50) focuses his lens on contemporary and social subjects, using street art, a form of contemporary art that clashes with the indifference of two elderly passers-by, symbols of "DOC" Roman-ness. Floriana Cason (p.51) puts her focus on the Myth, photographing a local Charlie Chaplin in Piazza Navona. She interprets the Myth as a refuge, a bit like in Imperial Rome, where a man without strength finds the latter in a mythological figure and re-emerges. Livia Mazzani (p. 52) immortalises memory and beauty, or perhaps great beauty, in black and white, photographing a performance by street artists in a historic square in Rome. Reality captured in a moment. Gabriel Rifilato (p.53) captures the essence of Rome; the sacred and the profane are conveyed not in a classical way, but through the sacred inscription found in the oldest church in Rome, Santa Maria in Trastevere, which is stained with blood and covered by a female figure, whose pose simultaneously echoes sacredness and lust.

Da lei creato ma che giace in un angolo per lasciare spazio ai vizi, al vino, al gioco, alle donne, che ne macchiano vesti e anima.

July 2018. I recreated "the imperial city" in the studio, sitting her on a throne that flaunts beauty and haughtiness. Next to her are two playmates who complete the timeless bacchanal.

Rome wears the symbols of royalty, with one foot on the world: she continues to dominate it through its own history, culture and, above all, law.

Created by her, yet lying in a corner to leave room for vices, wine, gambling, women, which stain both clothes and the soul.

A

Roma, la street art è diventata negli ultimi anni un interessante strumento espressivo. Dunque basta attendere “l’attimo decisivo” e una qualunque forma d’arte può dare emozioni se si interseca anche con una parte di reale. Ecco crearsi una storia, una paradossale situazione in cui è il cane a rallentare per voler leggere l’epigrafe scritta sulla tomba del poeta inglese John Keats, al Cimitero Acattolico di Testaccio, mentre i due anziani non paiono interessati all’incedere del tempo! Oggi quel graffito non c’è più, delebile come vuol essere la street art, ma indelebile come la fotografia riesce ad essere.

In recent years, street art has become an interesting expressive tool in Rome. It’s just a matter of waiting for "the decisive moment" and any form of art can evoke emotions if it also converges with a part of reality. This is how a story is created, a paradoxical situation in which a dog slows down to read the epigraph written on the grave of the English poet John Keats, at the Protestant Cemetery in Testaccio, while two old people seem not to be interested in the passing of time! This graffiti has now gone, impermanent as street art is meant to be, yet indelible as photography can be.

arzo 2018… Una mattina a Piazza Navona, un uomo, un’identità, uomo che per non arrendersi alla durezza della vita, si rifugia nel valore del Mito. Il mito viene considerato, rappresentazione di archetipi di personalità e di comportamento, che l’uomo abbraccia per reinventarsi. Uomo senza forza, che forza trova, nelle sembianze di un personaggio… quella forza archetipica che viene dall’etere, che investe l’uomo e la fa sua, facendo emergere l’amor proprio, lo invita, a non arrendersi alla vita, la dignità di un uomo, che mette in gioco se stesso e che grida al mondo cieco “anch’io esisto”.

March 2018… One morning, in Piazza Navona, a man, an identity who takes refuge in the value of the Myth in order not to surrender to the harshness of life. The myth is considered a representation of archetypes of personality and behaviour that the man embraces to reinvent himself. A man without strength, who finds strength in the features of a character ... an archetypal strength that comes from the ether, penetrating the man and taking possession of him, bringing out self-love. It invites him to not give up on life; the dignity of a man that gets back in the game and shout out to the blind world, "I exist too".

n giorno di luce, sole e aria, in una piazza di Roma. Febbraio 2016 a piazza San Cosimato. Gli artisti di strada... una continua avventura. Attrae, frena il desiderio di avanzare, si innesta una diversa realtà, si cade nell'oblio. Catturi l'attimo fuggente e godi della loro arte. La bellezza di Roma, attraverso il loro linguaggio, è unica e particolare. Diceva Flaubert: Ma era Roma che amavo...

Si coglie quel momento effimero e nostalgico di vacua decadenza, parte melanconica di ciò che esiste e dura solo un istante. La magia del bianco e nero mi appassiona, colgo l'anima dell'immagine, è un tempo senza tempo. È una immagine suggestiva e di forza evocativa. La rappresentazione del reale, la fotografia come specchio e ricostruzione e traccia del reale. Amo riprendere la realtà che mi sommerge, attimi di sospensione nel vortice della vita. E... lo spettacolo continua.

The way they convey the beauty of Rome is unique and distinct. Flaubert used to say: But it was Rome that I loved ... He captures that ephemeral, nostalgic moment of empty decadence, a melancholic part of that which exists and lasts just an instant. The magic of black and white fascinates me, I capture the soul of the image; it is timeless time. It is a suggestive image with evocative power. The representation of reality, photography used as a mirror, a reconstruction, a trace of reality. I love photographing the reality I am immersed in, suspended moments in the vortex of life. And ... the show goes on.

L

a convivenza tra sacro e profano che esiste a Roma è un aspetto fortemente affascinante della città. Roma, con la sua viscerale tolleranza, permette agli opposti di convivere: culto e irriverenza, castità e dissolutezza. Amo vivere in questa città anche per questo motivo. E me ne sono maggiormente reso conto dopo aver letto Il codice dell’anima di James Hillman che dice: Il mito platonico della “discesa” [nel mondo], dice che l’anima discende in quattro modi: attraverso il corpo, i genitori, il luogo, le condizioni esterne. [È necessario] abitare in un luogo che sia adatto alla tua anima e che ti leghi a sé con doveri e usanze.

La lussuria rintracciabile in certa femminilità romana, ha come scenario di quest’immagine l’epigrafe sacra contenuta nella più antica chiesa cattolica di Roma: Santa Maria in Trastevere. Il testo ricorda il presbitero Maréa che resse la Sede Apostolica, quando il papa Virgilio fu costretto a restare tre anni tra Costantinopoli e Calcedonia. Maréa esercitò con autorità le funzioni papali riuscendo a stroncare, tra l’altro, un incipiente eresia commemorata dall’epigrafe: Digne tenes praemium Mareas pro nomine XPI | Vindice quo vivit Sedes Apostolica | Praesulis in vicibus clausisti pectora saeva | Ne mandata patrum perderet ulla Fides | Tunque Sacerdotes docuisti Crismate Sancto | Tangere bis nullum indice posse Deo | Te quaerunt omnes te secula nostra requierunt.

The coexistence of the sacred and the profane in Rome is an extremely fascinating aspect of the city. With its innate tolerance, Rome allows opposites to live together: worship and irreverence, chastity and debauchery. This is another reason why I love living in this city.

And I became more aware of this after having read James Hillman’s The Soul’s Code, which says: The Platonic myth of growing down [into the world] says the soul descends in four modes – via the body, the parents, place, and circumstances. [….] Growing down means [….] living in a place that suits your soul and that ties you down with duties and customs.

The lust that can be detected in certain types of Roman femininity, is depicted in this image with the sacred inscription housed in the oldest Roman Catholic church in Rome: Santa Maria in Trastevere. The text speaks of the presbyter Maréa, who ran the Apostolic See when Pope Virgil was forced to remain between Constantinople and Chalcedon for three years. Maréa carried out the papal functions with authority, succeeding in crushing, among other things, an incipient heresy commemorated in the epigraph: (SEE ABOVE).

here do we end and where does the rest of the world begin? It’s in that space which separates us from everything else that we are creative. We do it by comparing ourselves to each other. We can make new forms of reality from the similarities and differences that arise from it. In short, we create.

We do it by thinking before acting. The best solution is to break free from old ways and open ourselves to new possibilities of action and reaction. I Can! In fact, each of us possesses the ability to push ourselves beyond the limits we have set in our lives ...

As no horizon can ever really be reached, (remaining tightly bound to that thin line in the distance which looks different with every step we take), there is no limit to the adventures we can embark on; to the journeys we can take both inside and outside our thoughts. In that place where imagination meets reality; where the eye of the beholder merges with the ear of the listener. This encounter gives birth to experiences, images, sounds, aromas and concepts that we can then make ours. If you think about it, a photograph is also exactly that: capturing a moment. And in that moment, there is the possibility

ove finiamo noi e inizia il mondo? È in quello spazio che ci separa dal resto che viviamo la nostra creatività. Lo facciamo come soggetti che si mettono a confronto, infatti, dalle assonanze e dalle differenze che ne derivano, possiamo trarre forme nuove di realtà. In una parola: creiamo.

Lo facciamo pensando, prima ancora che agendo. La miglior soluzione è sbrogliarsi dalle vecchie modalità e aprirci a nuove possibilità di azione e reazione. Io Posso!

Ognuno di noi, infatti, può andare oltre i limiti che si è imposto.

Come nessun orizzonte è mai davvero raggiungibile (rimanendo legato strettamente a quella sottile linea lontana dove le cose appaiono sempre nuove ad ogni passo che compiamo), così non vi è limite alle avventure che possiamo tentare, ai viaggi che possiamo intraprendere, dentro e fuori dai nostri pensieri. Lì dove l’immaginazione incontra la realtà, dove l’occhio di chi guarda si fonde con l’orecchio di chi ascolta. Da quell’incontro nascono esperienze, immagini, suoni, profumi, concetti che possiamo fare nostri. Anche una fotografia non è altro che questo: la cattura di un attimo. E, in quell’attimo, la possibilità di fissare e dare dimostrazione di un pensiero creativo, che ne

sia la sintesi e l’espansione allo stesso tempo.

ICHAEL MICHALKO: Non scegliamo di venire al mondo, però possiamo scegliere come vivere. Siamo noi a decidere di essere creativi o mediocri. Non importa se il mondo è indifferente alle nostre scelte e decisioni: queste scelte e queste decisioni sono nostre. Raccogliamo e conserviamo le idee come un collezionista. Tieniamo un contenitore o un raccoglitore per le idee e gli spunti. Cominciamo a raccogliere pubblicità, citazioni, disegni, idee, domande, vignette, immagini, scarabocchi interessanti e parole che possano

MAN RAY: Individuality is the most important thing. I never think of the public; I don’t try to please it or solicit it’s interest. I despise it, as I have been despised for years because of the things I've done.

MINOR WHITE: One does not photograph something simply for "what it is", but for "what else it is". The photograph invariably functions as a mirror of at least some part of the viewer. Many persons looking as a photograph see something of themselves first, and the photographer behind the camera second, if at all. They see what they wish to see, and not what the photographer thinks that he is showing them Imagination

MIPicture yourself vividly as defeated and that alone will make victory impossible. Picture yourself vividly as winning and that alone will contribute immeasurably to success.

Record the dream in a dream journal. Keep the journal next to your bed, and record as many details as you remember. Dreams reveal things you did not know you know.

ETTY EDWARDS: Il problema è vedere, trovare un particolare modo di vedere. Allenandoci a utilizzare quella parte del cervello che è sede del pensiero creativo e intuitivo, acquisiamo una capacità di fondamentale importanza nelle arti figurative, quella di mettere su carta ciò che i nostri occhi vedono.

MICHAEL MICHALKO: I creatori si concentrano su “ciò che è” e su “ciò che può essere” e non su ”ciò che non è”. Invece di escludere possibilità, i creatori tengono conto di tutte le possibilità, sia reali sia immaginarie. The problem is seeing, finding a particular way of seeing. By gaining access to the part of your mind that works in a style conducive to creative, intuitive thought, you will learn a fundamental skill of the visual arts: how to put down on paper what you see in front of your eyes.

MICHAEL MICHALKO: Creators look at “what is” and “what can be” instead of “what is not”. Instead of excluding possibilities, creators include all possibilities, both real and imagined. They choose to interpret their own world and do not rely upon the interpretation of others. Although many facets of human creativity are similar, they are never identical. Each person has to do something different, something that is unique.

The artist, after all, is not a special person, every person is a special kind of artist.

Ci sono fotografi i quali sostengono che il loro medium non ha niente a che vedere con la pittura.

Ci sono pittori che disprezzano la fotografia. Ognuno di questi atteggiamenti è provocato dal timore che una cosa possa soppiantare l’altra. Non conosco nessuno che voglia eliminare l’automobile perchè c’è l’aeroplano. Naturalmente ci saranno sempre quelli che guardano le opere d’arte con la lente e cercano di scoprire “come”, invece di adoperare il cervello per capire “perché”.

La gente domanda: “Che macchina fotografica adopera?” e io rispondo “Non si domanda mai ad un artista che pennelli e che colore adopera. Non si domanda mai a uno scrittore che macchina da scrivere usa”.

All these attitudes result from a fear that one will replace the other. I see no one trying to abolish the automobile because we have the airplane. Of course there will always be those who look at words with a magnifying glass and try to see 'how', instead of using their brains and figure out 'why'.

People ask: “What camera do you use?” I say: “You don’t ask an artist which brushes and paint he uses. You don’t ask a writer what typewriter he uses”.

Le associazioni di idee casuali erano una tecnica molto usata dai surrealisti per creare combinazioni concettuali nell'arte. Gli artisti in gruppo creavano una frase aggiungendo una parola ciascuno, senza sapere cosa avessero scritto gli altri.

Le frasi così ottenute diventavano una combinazione di concetti e il gruppo studiava e interpretava sperando di incappare in qualche nuova intuizione o nella fugace apparizione di un significato più profondo. La tecnica deve il suo nome a una frase che cominciava con queste parole: “cadavere squisito”.

ICHAEL MICHALKO: Making random connections in such a manner is a conceptual creative act. Making random connections was a popular technique used by the Surrealists to create conceptual combinations in art. Artists in a group would take turns creating a sentence, each contributing any word that occurred to them with-out seeing what the others had written. The resulting sentence became a combination of concepts that the group would study and interpret, hoping to get a novel insight or a glimpse of some deeper meaning. L

’anatra-coniglio: l’illusione ottica che svela la tua creatività. È un test risalente a più di un secolo fa, reso famoso dallo psicologo statunitense Joseph Jastrow nel 1899. L’immagine può essere vista sia come un'anatra che come un coniglio. Quale vedi per primo? E se ne vedi uno, puoi vedere anche l'altro? La maggior parte delle persone vede prima l'anatra e può passare tra le due rappresentazioni, ma quanto è facile per voi passare dall’una all’altra?

Il Vaso di Rubin è una famosa serie di ambigue figure bidimensionali sviluppate intorno al 1915 dallo psicologo danese Edgar Rubin. Si può percepire sia un vaso, sia profili di due volti umani che guardano l'un l'altro - ma non entrambe le immagini nello stesso tempo. Queste illusioni ottiche, si basano sul fatto che quando sia l'oggetto che lo sfondo condividono stessi confini, il cervello non può tenere due esperienze percettive nello stesso tempo, ma passa da una messa a fuoco all'altra.

The Rabbit-duck, the optical illusion that unveils your creativity, is a test dating back more than a century ago, created by the American psychologist Joseph Jastrow in 1899. The image can be seen as both a duck and a rabbit.

Which do you see first? And if you see one, can you also see the other? Most people see the duck first and can flip between the two representations, but the question is: how easy is it for you to flip between them?

The Rubin’s vase is a famous series of ambiguous two-dimensional figures developed in around 1915 by the Danish psychologist Edgar Rubin.

People can perceive either a vase, or profiles of two human faces gazing at one another, but not both images at the same time. These optical illusion are based upon the fact that when both object and background share the same borders, the brain cannot hold two perceptual experiences at the same time, but rather shifts from one focus to the other.

Invece di “riprendere un’ immagine”, il mio desiderio è “fare un’ immagine”. Diviene dunque necessario prendersi certe libertà con la tecnica oltre che con il soggetto, così come gli artisti hanno sempre fatto per arrivare a un’interpretazione più originale, anziché limitarsi a registrare ciò che il fotografo si trova dinanzi. Il mio obiettivo è quello dell’espressione di un’idea. Quando dico che l’Arte non è fotografia, intendo dire che la perfezione tecnica non può mai costituire un fine in sé soddisfacente, ma va usata per esprimere qualcosa in modo originale e convincente.

Stieglitz rispetto ad altri fotografi era un secessionista e l’idea di dissidenza o di rivolta mi aveva sempre attratto. Ero un rivoluzionario. Andai avanti così facendo tutto quello che non si deve fare.

Cerco prima di tutto la libertà.

Quando mi dicevano che ero in anticipo sui tempi, rispondevo: “No, non è vero, io sono nel mio tempo, siete voi che siete rimasti indietro”.

MICHAEL MICHALKO: Puoi lamentarti che le rose hanno le spine oppure gioire del fatto che le spine hanno le rose. Hai la possibilità di scegliere l'interpretazione che desideri. Non è l'esperienza a determinare chi sei, ma la tua interpretazione dell'esperienza. Non vedi le cose “come sono”, ma per “come sei tu”.

JAMES HILLMAN: Per capire il carattere, la vocazione e il destino di una persona, dobbiamo rifarci al mito platonico di Er: l’anima di ciascuno di noi “sceglie un compagno segreto”. La ghianda, il seme: i greci lo chiamavano daimon, i latini genius, i cristiani angelo custode. Lui ci guiderà nel cammino terreno.

Molti sono i chiamati, pochi gli eletti; molti hanno talento, pochi il carattere che può far realizzare quel talento. Non è tanto “quello che faccio”, ma “il modo in cui lo faccio”.

MAN RAY: The danger of photography is that it can stop being an art and become art. Only when photography has aged like Art or alcohol, will it become Art and not simply an Art like it is today.

AN RAY: I want to “make an image", not "photograph an image”. It therefore becomes necessary to take certain liberties with the technique as well as with the subject, as artists have always done to produce a more original interpretation, rather than simply recording what the photographer has in front of him. My object is to express an idea. When I say that Art is not photography, I mean that technical perfection can never be a satisfactory end in itself; it must be used to express something in an original and convincing way.

Compared to other photographers, Stieglitz was a secessionist, and the idea of dissidence or revolt had always appealed to me. I was a revolutionary. I went on being so, doing everything I shouldn’t have.

MINOR WHITE: When a photograph functions as an Equivalent... the photograph acts as a symbol or plays the role of a metaphor for something that is beyond the subject photographed.

AN RAY: I seek freedom above all else. When people said I was ahead of my time, I replied "That’s not true. I'm of my time; it's the others who are behind the times".

MICHAEL MICHALKO: You can complain because roses have thorns, or you can rejoice because thorns have roses. You can choose to interpret experiences any way you wish. It is not the experience that determines who you are; it is your interpretation of the experience. You do not see things as they are; you see them as you are.

JAMES HILLMAN: To understand a person’s character, vocation and destiny, we must refer to Plato’s Myth of Er: every soul "chooses a spiritual companion".

The acorn, seeds: the Greek daemon, the Latin genius, the Christian guardian angel. He will guide us on our earthly path. Many are called, few are chosen; many have talent, few have the character that can realise the talent. It's not “what I do”, but “how I do it”.

The Mysterious Origin of the Creative Artwork. Psychic art: a window on “the unknown”.

Q

uando l’artista, per definizione, dovrebbe essere dotato della sensibilità necessaria a percepire l’esistenza di quelli che James Hilmann definisce gli “invisibili”: l’idea creativa, il mito, la raffigurazione e contemplazione dell’idea.

Per vedere il genio però, citando ancora Hillman, occorre del “genio”. Chi può giustificare lo spirito iniziatico del genio e l’origine misteriosa dell’opera creativa dell’uomo chiamato “artista”?

Intanto, è bene sottolineare, non può esistere un critico d’arte se non è egli stesso artista.

Nella Fontana di Trevi a Roma, ad esempio (per restare nei temi di questo primo numero della rivista), il cultore d’arte, con la sua vocazione critica, esamina freddamente l’opera artistica giudicandone l’espressione, lo stile e altro, in termini “umani”. Difficilmente riesce ad immedesimarsi nell’istante creativo, nella “visione dell’artista”. Giudicherà il prodotto artistico per analogia, secondo metodi e metriche conosciute, ma la visione, intesa come ispirazione, è unica, ed è propria dell’artista. Il “daimon” che ispira e protegge qualsiasi uomo, e quindi anche l’artista, è così geloso della propria individuazione che non permette contaminazioni. Ogni mito nasce da un desiderio di andare “oltre” la visione terrena e temporale dell’ispirazione. E oltre la vocazione, madre dell’ispirazione stessa.

Nell’idea di Nicola Salvi, ideatore della Fontana di Trevi, il soggetto principale Oceano rappresenta la personificazione di quel mare infinito che fluisce tutto intorno alla terra e dal quale derivano i corsi d'acqua, rappresentazione della vita. Da questa idea “razionale” che ha spinto Salvi a progettare la fontana, è possibile andare “oltre” l’opera stessa e scoprire che le acque, scorrendo verso la vasca, vanno a formare l’immagine di un grande alveo materno: un mito antichissimo che tutte le religioni pongono all’inizio di se stesse.

L’artista è inconsapevole di ciò che crea, ed utilizza simboli ed immagini che in realtà esprimono “altro”, consentendo all’osservatore un contatto con il non conosciuto e il non visibile.

Un’opera d’arte non è mai proprietà di qualcuno, di un individuo, ma fa parte di un contesto animico e storico che va oltre l’individuo che l’ha realizzata, e che totalizza secoli di conoscenza e di sforzo creativo.

L’idea è una creatura, una rappresentazione simbolica: è qualcosa di presente e vivente. È il daimon che, da forza invisibile, genera il visibile con impulsi e rappresentazioni ideali delle quali l’opera artistica ne è l’esempio evidente.

L’origine del Tutto si contrappone all’esistenza del Nulla. L’arte, nelle sue mirabili e sofferte intuizioni personali, così come la scienza nella sua ossessiva spiegazione dei perché di ogni cosa, e l’anima mistica, onnipotente ed onniscente, percepiscono la visione dell’Assoluto, e di come questo si sprigiona e vive nel cosmo e nell’animo umano, senza tempo e senza spazio.

L’arte psichica, quindi, non può essere puramente contemplativa e creativa dell’immagine, ma è ciò che va a toccare le corde più 60 | ROMAN ART & PHOTO WALKS | INVERNO 2018/2019

he artist should by definition have the sensitivity necessary to perceive the existence of what James Hilmann calls the "invisible": the creative idea, the myth, representation and contemplation of an idea.

However, again citing Hillman, we need "genius" to see a genius.

Who can justify the initiatory spirit of a genius and the mysterious origin of a creative work by a man called "artist"? In the meantime, it should be pointed out that an art critic cannot exist if he himself is not an artist.

When looking at the Trevi Fountain in Rome, for example (in keeping with the topics of this first issue of the magazine), the art lover, with his critical vocation, coldly examines the artistic work by judging its expression, style and other aspects, in "human" terms. It is almost impossible for him to identify with the creative moment; with the "artist’s vision". He will judge the artistic product by analogy, according to known methods and metrics, but the vision, or inspiration, is unique and belongs to the artist. The "daemon" that inspires and protects any man, and therefore also the artist, is so jealous of his own individuation that he does not permit any kind of influence. All myths stem from a desire to go "beyond" the earthly and temporal vision of inspiration. And beyond the vocation; mother of inspiration itself.

In the mind of Nicola Salvi, the architect who designed the Trevi Fountain, the main statue of Oceanus represents the personification of that infinite sea that flows all around the Earth and from which watercourses derive; a representation of life.

From this "rational" idea that led Salvi to design the fountain, it is possible to go "beyond" the work itself and uncover that the water flowing towards the pool is going to form the image of a large maternal bed: a very ancient myth that all religions place at the beginning of themselves.

The artist is unaware of what he creates, and uses symbols and images that actually express "something else", allowing the observer contact with the unknown and the non-visible. A work of art is never anyone’s property, but part of a soul-like and historical context that goes beyond the individual who has created it, and which brings together centuries of knowledge and creative work.

The idea is a creature, a symbolic representation: it is something present and living. It is the daemon that as an invisible force generates the visible with impulses and ideal representations, of which the artistic work is a clear example.

The origin of the Whole is in contrast with the existence of Nothingness. Art, in its admirable and suffered personal insights, like science in its obsessive explanation of the whys of everything, and the mystical soul, omnipotent and omniscient, perceive the vision of the Absolute and how it emerges and lives in the cosmos and the human soul, without time or space.

Psychic art, therefore, cannot be purely contemplative and creative with the image; it is what touches the daemon’s most

Ciò che era trascendente sta diventando immanente, come gli antichi maestri avevano intuito e forse vissuto, l’origine divina dell’uomo sta cominciando a germogliare. Per questo forse c’è molta confusione, paura, panico, ma anche speranza: perché la forza propulsiva del daimon cosmico non permette, se non temporaneamente, errori o deviazioni. L’opera d’arte fa parte della storia dell’umanità, in quanto momento del futuro sconosciuto che, in ogni caso, dovrà essere vissuto. La morte, l’assenza della vita, non esisteranno più nella nostra sensibilità eterna perché sta sorgendo una nuova coscienza genetica. Lottiamo e combattiamo perché tutti gli esseri viventi vivano, producano pensieri d’amore e di ringraziamento l’uno verso l’altro, perché in questo modo il trascendente diviene immanente ed in questo modo l’uomo diventa Dio.

Art, in its various forms of expression, is a search for the Word, Image, Sound and Movement, mediator of the incredible, marvelous and eternal vision in which everything had a Beginning, yet where everything is always a Becoming.

That which was transcendent is becoming immanent, as if the ancient masters sensed - and perhaps even experienced - that the divine origin of man is starting to germinate. Perhaps for this reason, there is much confusion, fear and panic, yet also hope: because the propulsive force of the cosmic daemon does not allow, if not temporarily, errors or deviations. A work of art is part of humanity’s history; a moment in the unknown future which, no matter what, must be experienced. Death, the absence of life, will no longer exist in our eternal sensitivity because a new genetic consciousness is arising. We struggle and fight so that all living beings live, produce thoughts of love and thanks towards each other, because in this way the transcendent becomes immanent, and in this way man becomes God.

1 • Keats - Shelley Forse il più famoso punto di riferimento letterario della Città Eterna è la Keats-Shelley Memorial House, situata proprio accanto a Piazza di Spagna.

ato a Pittsburgh da immigrati cecoslovacchi, dopo un’infanzia povera si trasferisce ventenne a New York dove lavora come vetrinista e disegnatore di scarpe, ma già dagli anni ’60 commercializza le prime tele con i personaggi dei fumetti, tra cui spicca Dick Tracy. Nel ’62 la scelta inedita: inizia a dipingere bottiglie di coca cola e barattoli di zuppa Campbell’s, i prodotti del mercato e della pubblicità, devitalizzati miti della società dei consumi; tuttavia l’oggetto industriale stereotipato e anonimo che l’Artista predilige, una volta manipolato, è in grado di esprimere una pur effimera attrattiva estetica. Nei ritratti dei personaggi famosi, come Elvis Presley, Liz Taylor o Mao Zedong, Warhol sostituisce gradualmente il lavoro manuale con il procedimento meccanico della serigrafia atta a rendere sempre più “neutre” le sue opere.

Interessanti le serie dei Disasters in cui reitera oggetti sing o l a r i come la sedia elettrica o riproduce scontri automobilistici e tumulti razziali: l’immagine, privata dalla ripetizione modulare della sua unicità e filtrata da velature di colore, è resa emotivamente innocua. ”Quando osservate uno spettacolo raccapricciante abbastanza a lungo asseriva Warhol- esso cessa di farvi qualsiasi effetto”. La Factory, una fabbrica di idee da lui fondata nel ’63 dove assieme a collaboratori e allievi lavora con tecniche industriali, diviene un luogo ambito da celebrità dello spettacolo e della cultura, da Dylan a Dalì, da Kerouac a Nureyev e grazie ai rapporti con il mondo della musica nascono copertine di album di band famose, come i Velvet underground & Nico o i Rolling Stones.

Warhol, acclamata star della pop art, è un geniale comunicatore capace di inventare perfino il proprio eccentrico personaggio, fissato nell’inquietante autoritratto del ’86 con la parrucca argentea e il volto simile a un’icona bizantina. Avvalendosi del mezzo oggettivante della fotografia l’Artista documenta i personaggi-miti della società in cui vive; con l’inseparabile polaroid, infatti, tra gli anni ‘70 e ’80 immortala divi del cinema, drag queen della serie “Ladies and Gentlemen” e a Roma, dove con la collaborazione del gallerista Lucio Amelio inaugura un’importante mostra assieme a Joseph Beuys, crea i celebri “italian portraits”. Nell’opera più emblematica di Warhol l’immagine di Marilyn Monroe è tratta da una foto scattata da Gene Korman in occasione del lancio pubblicitario del film “ N i a g a r a” nel ’53: il volto, circoscritto in un campo ristretto come per effetto di una zoomata, è caratterizzato da piatte campiture cromatiche e da puri segni grafici.

La bocca sensuale, gli occhi ammalianti e i capelli hanno timbri saturi e irreali, mentre la pelle, sempre innaturale, assume a volte tonalità livide; replicato in serie, spesso un po’ consunto come accade ai manifesti pubblicitari logorati dal tempo, il ritratto diviene icona impersonale e ossessiva che provoca un imprevedibile straniamento. La foto, scattata prima della morte dell’attrice avvenuta nel ’62, nella rivisitazione di Warhol sembra già percorsa da un tragico presentimento, sensazione che lo stesso artista spesso percepisce invadere i propri lavori: “mi resi conto che qualsiasi cosa stessi facendo doveva essere morte” la sacralità e nello stesso tempo la lussuria.

Curata da Matteo Bellenghi, la mostra è visitabile al Complesso del Vittoriano di Roma fino al 3 febbraio 2019.

arhol had his revolutionary idea in 1962: he began to paint Coca-Cola bottles and Campbell's soup cans, well-known branded products, lifeless legends of the consumer society; however, once manipulated, the stereotyped and anonymous industrial object that the Artist chose is able to express ephemeral aesthetic appeal. In his portraits of famous people, such as Elvis Presley, Liz Taylor and Mao Zedong, Warhol gradually replaced hand-painting with the mechanical process of silk-screen printing, which made his works increasingly "neutral".

His Death and Disaster series is particularly interesting, with the repetition of singular objects such as an electric chair or the reproduction of car crashes and race riots: the image, with its uniqueness taken away by the modular design and repetition, filtered through veils of colour, becomes emotionally harmless. As Warhol said, ”When you see a gruesome picture over and over again, it really doesn't have any effect.". In 1963, he opened his studio The Factory, where together with collaborators and students he worked with industrial techniques. It became a drop in centre for celebrities, movie stars and rock stars - Dylan, Dalì, Kerouac and Nureyev, to name but a few - and thanks to his connections in the music world, he designed the covers for many albums by famous bands, for example Velvet Underground & Nico and The Rolling Stones, Warhol, acclaimed Pop Art master and producer of experimental films in which nothing happens, lasting either a few minutes or days, was a brilliant communicator, even succeeding in inventing his own eccentric character, immortalised in the disquieting self-portrait he did in 1986, with a silver wig and his face reminiscent of a Byzantine icon.

Taking advantage of photography’s ability to objectify the subject in the photograph, the Artist documented the celebrities-legends in the society he lived in; between the 1970s and 80s, using his inseparable polaroid, he immortalised movie stars, depicted a series of transvestites in the “Ladies and Gentlemen” series, and in Rome, where he inaugurated an important exhibition with Joseph Beuys, in collaboration with gallery owner Lucio Amelio, he created the famous "Italian Portraits" series. For his most iconic series, that of Marilyn Monroe, Warhol used a photo taken by Gene Korman as a publicity shot for her 1953 film “Niagara”: her face, set in a circumscribed square to create a zoom effect, is characterised by flat coloured backgrounds and simple graphic designs. The sensual mouth, bewitching eyes and hair are in saturated, unnatural colours, while the skin tone, again unrealistic, is at times purplish; repeated in a series and often a little faded like a timeworn advertising poster, the portrait becomes an impersonal and obsessive icon that causes unpredictable alienation. Warhol's reworked photo, taken before she died in 1962, already seems permeated by a tragic presentiment, a sensation that the artist often thought infiltrated his work: "I realised that everything I was doing must have been death!"
