YOUR
ESTATE ON THE BANKS OF THE RED RIVER AWAITS YOU!

OVERVIEW
ABOUT THE PROPERTY

This luxurious home has 4,606sq ft, 4 bedrooms, 3.5 baths, 32' ceilings with mesquite tongue and groove flooring, custom stone fireplace, lighting, fixtures, high-end appliances, and much more. It is truly one of a kind home situated on 45 acres on the banks of the Red River in Belcher, Louisiana. The home has three levels, a 1,000-square-foot screened-in entertainment porch with a kitchen and cooking area. Back in 1975, the core of engineers straightened up the Red River which left an oxbow, mile-long lake just outside the front door of the property, which has some of the best hunting and fishing in the State of Louisiana. Additionally, it left a smaller lake which is right in the duck flyway making hunting exceptional! There are four outbuildings, a Horse barn, a state-of-the-art round-riding arena, and two RV hookups on the property.

It’s always exciting at SB Magazine. Switching up columns, looking for a different story angle, sharing our communities’ triumphs. This month we are so pleased to introduce you to TWIN BLENDS, twin brothers who have built a huge Facebook following by researching old photos of buildings and places in and around Shreveport Bossier. They take those photos, merge them to show how those places look today, and then share them with their fans. Watch for Mark Mangham and Mike Mangham’s column in every issue. You might just recognize a place from your past.
If you didn’t recognize the sweet lady on our cover, she is Cindy Dyer. She recently did a little thing. She made history by being the first woman from Northwest Louisiana elected as the President of the Louisiana Realtors Association. We are proud to share her journey with you and hope you are as inspired and as proud of her as we are.
Speaking of realtors, this issue is focused on our Top Realtors in Shreveport and Bossier City. Your votes were heard, and the People’s Choice Award goes to Chessica Harville.

You’ll also find the names and faces of the 15 students who ACED the ACT. All of these gifted kids are from Caddo Magnet High School. We find this extraordinary and couldn’t wait to pat them on the back. Tomorrow’s leaders right here in Shreveport Bossier.
Finally, we packed our camera equipment and camped at Azarue’s Bridal and Formal in Bossier City. I know you’ll see something you’ll love in our wedding section. And don’t forget to drop by the Boardwalk Bridal Market & Sample Sale on August 5th.

Furry FriendOn Your
Wedding
By: Hailey LawsonINCLUDING YOUR Day
We’ve all heard the traditional wedding day phrase, “Something old, something new, something borrowed, and something blue,” but what about something furry?
Your wedding is an exhilarating day for family and friends to celebrate, and we all know that weddings can be very stressful, especially if you want to include your pet. For those pet owners who want to include their four-legged companion on their special day, here are some tips to make it a stress-free experience for all.

ADD A PERSONAL TOUCH:
Including your pets in engagement photos and engagement announcements can make the big day that much more personal and special. However, the difficult part will be keeping your pet from stealing the limelight. Many pets are used to posing for the camera, but make sure that the indoor or outdoor setting for the photo shoot is safe for you and your pet.
DETERMINE YOUR PET’S ROLE:
Before the big day, decide what role your pet will play. Is your pet going to play a large role in the wedding, such as best canine or best feline? Or maybe they’re going to be the ring bearer or walk the bride down the aisle. Dress them to impress and make sure their attire is comfortable and fits correctly. Have their collar or leash match the colors of your wedding. Maybe a simple color-coordinated satin bow tie or dazzling tux for your furry friend will add the right touch.

CHECK WITH THE VENUE:
Always check with the wedding venue beforehand to ensure that pets are allowed on the property. Also, don’t forget to have some treats and water available, and take your pet to the venue before the ceremony to familiarize them with the surroundings. While you are there, take a minute to determine a quick exit in case they get upset, too excited during the wedding, or require an emergency potty break.
BE PREPARED FOR THE UNEXPECTED:
Tell your photographer that you want to include your pet in some of the wedding photos. This allows the photographer to plan photo ideas involving your pet and also allows them to prepare for unpredictable pet behavior. Even with well-behaved pets, theres always a chance that they’ll misbehave or become stressed during the day. The day’s commotion can be increasingly stressful for your pet, so make sure they can handle the excitement.
INFORM GUESTS:
If you plan to have your pet at the wedding, it’s essential to inform your guests in advance. Include this information on your save-the-date cards and invitations to allow people with allergies to plan accordingly.
PLAN AHEAD:
To ensure that both you and your pet can enjoy the event, consider hiring a pet sitter to take care of them during the ceremony and reception, and take them home saving you the worry for their comfort and safety (or if they’ve accidentally ruined your cake). It’s great fun to have your beloved pet around on this special day, but you don’t want to worry about them the whole time.
Incorporating your pet into your wedding celebration can make it even more memorable and heartwarming. However, it’s essential to consider your pet’s well-being and comfort throughout the process. With careful planning, you can create a paw-some wedding that will be cherished by both you and your furry friend for a lifetime.

How To Be The Best Man. ‘Best'
BY ADAM BAILEYBeing chosen as “the best man” isn’t just to fill out a list that comes with the wedding invitation. At the risk of sounding like a pageant contestant, being the best man is a privilege that comes with responsibilities. That the groom—likely your best friend—has trusted you to be dependable when it comes to all things wedding-related.
While that sounds straightforward—it is not so simple. After all, the groom has asked you to stand by his side during one of the most significant events of his life. If you haven’t done this before, or if you would like to know what it takes to become the “best” best man, here’s a list of what to do so you can easily perform your duties. actually stuck.

LEND SUPPORT
In moderation obviously, but from the moment you get the invitation to be the best man, to the moment the bride walks down the aisle, you are the groom’s go-to for anything from administrative issues to managing any pre-wedding jitters. No counseling is necessary, rather a simple ‘if you’re worried about anything, feel free to give me a call’. Though don’t just be a ‘yes’ man, don’t be afraid to offer up actual advice. Things like, “No, you can’t have an LSU theme for your wedding” and “Yes, you should get her something to open on your wedding morning” usually fit the bill.
PLAN THE BACHELOR PARTY
Let’s get this straight. Volunteer to plan his bachelor party, not yours. While the idea of a wild, unrestricted night of debauchery may sound like the perfect plan to you—it’s important to ask the groom what he wants. Not all bachelor parties have to fit the Hollywood stereotype. Maybe, instead of going to a strip club, he’d rather bond with his wedding party at the fishing camp over a few cases of beer. Ultimately, the party should be a celebration of your
friend’s last stretch of bachelorhood. So, he should be allowed to enjoy it the way he wants.
Once you’ve decided on a theme, start planning the details—such as managing the budget, scouting venues, and delegating tasks to other groomsmen.

LEAD THE GROOMSMEN
A successful groom's party is one that ensures the wedding runs smoothly with no hiccups. It’s not an army exercise, but just requires a bit of authority, and someone to decide who’s doing what. Unfortunately, the things that are not done, are the ones that get noticed. Call a team talk at the groomsman’s lunch to make sure everyone is on the same page.
DON’T FORGET SMALL TALK
Weddings are a celebration of love, so share some around. Make time for key family members and their friends—so introduce yourself and explain how your and the groom’s friendship came about. Why? Because for the older generations, a wedding’s appeal extends past the free bar. Any anecdotes about when you first met the bride, or how you and the groom are such good friends, will be fondly remembered. And appreciated.
NAIL THE SPEECH
Best to follow the three F’s: fitting, full of sentiment (not

innuendo), and funny. Deliver the first two and the third will follow. Setting out to be hilarious ends in failure ninety percent of the time—so don’t try to be the exception. Poke fun at the groom, even tease the bride about what she’s got herself in for, but this is no place to be dishing up dirt. Pleasantries like “Doesn’t the groom look dashing today” and “Everyone’s excited about your future” go down well.
MODERATION IS KEY
Enjoy yourself at the wedding, especially at the reception. It is, after all, a celebration that calls for serious fun and merrymaking—so by all means dine, drink, and dance throughout the night. That said, while it may be customary to drink with your fellow groomsmen or take a swig of whisky during the morning preparations, don’t go overboard. Drink in moderation and if you can, skip the cocktail bar, especially before your big speech. If you are bringing a flask, please don’t drink from it before the reception. Nobody likes or wants a drunk Best Man.

ENJOY YOURSELF
Don’t forget that it’s an honor to be chosen as the best man, not a chore. Such bravado can be hard to come by in today’s worlds—so embrace every moment and make sure you’re the “best” best man you can possibly be.

WeddingPlanning: WeddingPlanning:
AN ARTFUL BLEND OF CREATIVITY AND ORGANIZATION
By Seva May and Miranda MilnerWedding planning is a multifaceted endeavor that requires a delicate balance of creativity and organization. It is an art form where every detail contributes to creating a unique and memorable experience for the couple and their guests. In this essay, we will explore the various aspects of wedding planning, from developing a concept to managing logistics, and the crucial role it plays in orchestrating a joyful celebration of love.
A successful wedding begins with a well-defined concept that captures the essence of the couple's love story. This involves understanding their preferences, cultural background, and personal style. By conducting detailed interviews and discussions, wedding planners can uncover the couple's vision and translate it into a cohesive theme. Whether it's a rustic outdoor affair or an elegant ballroom extravaganza, the concept sets the tone for every decision that follows.
Once the concept is established, wedding planners must work closely with the couple to develop a realistic budget. This entails meticulously estimating costs for various elements such as the venue, catering, decor, entertainment, and more. By maintaining a comprehensive financial plan, wedding planners ensure that the couple's vision can be realized within their means. They often navigate the delicate balancing act of prioritizing expenditures while considering the couple's dreams and aspirations.
It's never too soon to start working on the guest list for both the rehearsal dinner and the wedding. The bride and groom should sit down and work on this together. It’s a complicated process and depends on what your budget will be and

the venue. Part of this decision will be whether to include children and who will be invited with a plus one. This brings us to the wedding stationery and save-the-date cards. As soon as you know your wedding style and have confirmed the venue send out the Save-the-Date cards (nine months before the wedding date for a destination wedding and four to six months prior for local nuptials). Formal invitations follow six to eight weeks before the wedding day. You should request that RSVPs be returned no later than one month before the celebration so there are no last-minute issues.
Creating a registry is a great way to help your guests choose meaningful presents that you'll cherish for a lifetime. From kitchen gadgets to honeymoon experiences, don't be afraid to include items that reflect your unique personality and interests. Of course, no wedding would be complete without thoughtful gifts for your loved ones who have supported you along this journey. From personalized keepsakes to heartfelt tokens of appreciation, expressing gratitude through meaningful gestures adds an extra touch of warmth to your special day.

Weddings require diverse vendors, from photographers and florists to musicians and caterers. Last but certainly not least is music - it sets the mood for every part of the celebration! Whether you opt for a live band or a DJ, make sure to discuss your preferences and create a playlist that will keep everyone on their feet throughout the night.
Engaging a wedding planner is more than helpful in identifying reputable vendors who align with the couple's vision. Through careful research, portfolio reviews, and face-to-face meetings, they build a network of professionals to bring the couple's dreams to life. Coordinating between these vendors, managing contracts

(reading every contract thoroughly), and overseeing communication ensures a seamless execution on the big day.

Wedding planners are masters of transforming spaces into enchanting settings that reflect the couple's personality. Venue options are endless. Whether you envision a romantic beachside ceremony or a grand ballroom affair, make sure to consider factors like capacity, location, and ambiance when choosing the perfect venue.
Meticulous attention to detail is required when selecting color schemes, floral arrangements, lighting, and other design elements. By harmonizing the smallest of details, such as table linens and placeholders, with the overarching theme, wedding planners craft an ambiance that leaves a lasting impression on guests.

The day of the wedding demands precise coordination and flawless execution. Wedding planners act as the conductors of this grand event, ensuring that every detail adheres to meticulously constructed timelines. From managing transportation arrangements and overseeing vendor setup to coordinating the ceremony and reception, their presence guarantees a stress-free experience for the couple, allowing them to focus on the celebration of their love.
Wedding planning can be an emotionally charged journey for couples. Hard decisions must be made but choosing the flavor of your cake together at a cake tasting will make up for that. Amidst the excitement and stress, wedding planners act as confidants, providing unwavering support and guidance. They offer a calming presence during moments of uncertainty and act swiftly to resolve any unforeseen complications. Their ability to adapt and problem-solve ensures that the couple's special day remains a joyous affair.

Why The Bridesmaids Wear Matching

Bridesmaid Dresses?

Identical bridesmaid dresses may be a little passé these days but in Roman times, matching outfits meant good luck and were a common wedding tradition. Back then, people believed evil spirits would attend the wedding in an attempt to curse the bride and groom. To confuse the spirits, bridesmaids acted as decoys and dressed identically to the bride. The idea was that the spirits would be unsure which was the bride, which would lead them to leave her alone and allow the couple to wed.

Why The Groom Stands On The Right Side Of The Bride?
This tradition originates way back when men carried swords and the groom needed to keep his right arm free (assuming he was right-handed!) to be able to draw his sword to protect his bride. This means that the bride tra-
These days, brides are carrying peonies and roses down the aisle, but back in ancient Greece and Rome, it was all about herbs. During that time, it was en vogue to hold aromatic bouquets of garlic, dill, and other herbs and spices. Thankfully, we've graduated from pungent herb bouquets to lush floral ones, often composed of the bride's favorite bloom. Carrying a favorite flower variety is a tradition that bec ame popular in 1840 when Queen Victoria married Prince Albert and carried a bouquet of snowdrops, his favorite flower.

Why The Ring Is Worn On The "Ring Finger?"
This tradition also traces its origins back to the Romans, who believed that the fourth finger on the left hand was connected directly to the heart by a vein called "the vein of love." Because of this hand-heart connection, this finger has been adopted through the ages as the ideal spot to wear one's wedding ring.
Why Guests Toss Rice At The Newlyweds At The Conclusion Of The Ceremony?

4 5
Back in the day, marriage meant expansion, from starting a family to increasing one's assets. Rice symbolized both fertility and prosperity, and tossing it at newlyweds at the conclusion of the wedding ceremony conveyed best wishes and good luck—for babies, bountiful harvests, and everything in between. Nowadays, the wedding tradition of tossing things on the couple takes many forms, from dried lavender buds and blowing bubbles to biodegradable confetti.

Why The Bride Tosses The Bouquet?

This tradition—first recorded in England in the 1700s but likely started earlier—also comes from the idea that it was lucky to have a piece of the bride’s clothing. Single women would rush to the bride after the ceremony to touch her and tear off a bit of her dress. To avoid having her dress ruined, the bride would toss the bouquet as a diversion and then run! These days, it’s more about the bride having a fun and special moment with her single friends before embarking on married life.

Why There Is A Foot-Washing Ceremony?

In recent years, many couples partaking in Christian wedding ceremonies in America have included the practice of foot washing in the wedding ceremony. Inspired by the Bible passage in John 13:1–17 where Jesus washes his disciples' feet, this act is meant to symbolize sacrificial love and devotion.

Why The Bride Wears A White Wedding Dress?

White is by far the most popular color for wedding dresses in the Western world, but that’s a fairly recent tradition. During the royal wedding of Britain’s Queen Victoria and Prince Albert in 1840, Victoria wore a light-colored satin gown. So many brides wanted to look like royalty that they mimicked her dress, including the hue, said to symbolize purity and virginity in Victorian culture.
Why The Bride And Groom Have The First Dance?
8 9
The first dance was considered the official opening of dancing by the newly married couple who were the guests of honor. The first dance between the bride and groom is the most awaited moment for the newlywed as well as the guests. It shows the love and unity between the new couple.

THE cingACT
Before high school graduation, if a student wishes to further their education, they must take a college testing exam. The American College Testing (“ACT”) is a standardized test used for undergraduate admissions for American colleges and universities. The ACT is broken up into five sections with their own score: math, science, English, reading, and writing. Those scores are then run through an algorithm to reach a composite score. The composite score ranges from 1–36. ACT scores reflect what students have learned throughout high school and furnish colleges and universities with excellent information for recruiting, advising, placement, and retention.

Being prepared for the ACT should be a priority of Often, students who are not planning to go to college change their minds when they see their ACT test results. There is also a career exploration component to help students identify career options.

According to act.org this is how it works:
The ACT consists of 215 questions across four sections: English, Math, Reading, and Science. There is also an optional writing section. You have two hours and 55 minutes to complete the test. Each section is given a raw score, which then is converted into a scaled score of 1-36. Finally, the four scaled scores are averaged together to create the ACT composite score. A perfect ACT score doesn’t equate to a perfect test. A student can likely miss a couple of questions and still get a perfect 36. The exact conversion between raw and scaled score will depend on the test date and the

other students who took it on that date- so the exact number of questions you can miss will vary.

The national average score on the ACT is 22. In Louisiana, the average score in 2023 (so far) is 18.1. We’re lagging the national score by 3.9 points. Not so in Shreveport. At least not at one school. You could make the case that Caddo Magnet High School is way ahead on that score. With a total of 387 students scoring 25 and above out of 1,066 students (give or take a few), that’s over 36% scoring 3 points above the national average. Fifteen of those students scored a perfect 36. FIFTEEN. According to US News and World Report, (CMHS ranks #1 in the Shreveport Metro Area High Schools, #7 out of 1237 Louisiana schools putting them in the top 1% of public schools in Louisiana, #82 in Magnet High Schools across the nation and #462 in the National Rankings. Why is the ACT so important?

ACT scores play a crucial role in college admissions and scholarship opportunities. Universities often consider these scores along with grade point averages (GPAs) to determine the potential success of applicants. High ACT scores can increase the chances of being admitted into top-tier institutions, which can pave the way for various future opportunities.
To test high on the ACT, it is important to prepare in advance. This can involve studying the material that will be covered on the exam, taking practice tests, and becoming familiar with the format and structure of the test. It is also important to manage your time effectively during the exam and to stay focused and alert throughout. Additionally, getting a good night's sleep before the test and eating a healthy breakfast can help ensure that you are in the best possible condition to perform well. Finally, it can be helpful to approach the test with a positive attitude and to stay calm and confident throughout the exam. However, high ACT scores alone are not sufficient to get into college, prepare for a career path, and enjoy life after high school. According to Principal R.J. Middleton, Caddo Magnet High School strives to graduate students who are well-rounded, exhibiting a range of skills and experiences. Extra-curricular activities, community service, leadership roles, and
sports can all contribute to a well-rounded profile. Caddo Magnet High excels at providing these opportunities to their students. This past year, CMHS staged “Sweeney Todd” with 77 students performing, working backstage, building sets and putting together costumes. The orchestra consisted of students from the music department with a few adults mixed in to fill out the score.
Students can engage with their peers in 64 clubs and organizations that range in interests including everything from the Ping Pong Club to the Robotics Team. There’s the usual Chess Club, Key Club, Latin Club, Yearbook, and the Student Council but Magnet offers several extraordinary interests: E-Sports gaming Club; Guitar Club; In stitches; Drama Club Mock Trial, Cyber Patriot – you get the picture. Magnet also furnishes the students with a plethora of athletic opportunities such as archery, golf, tennis, lacrosse, gymnastics and soccer to name a few. Engaging in any of these extracurricular activities demonstrates the ability to manage time effectively, work well in teams, and take on responsibilities. These skills are invaluable in the professional world and are highly sought after by potential employers.
The teachers of Caddo Magnet High School are the cream of the crop. Not only do they care deeply about their students but they work hard every day to teach from a curriculum that prepares them for the ACT. They understand that the transition from high school to college or directly into the workplace can be daunting, and students who have used their time in high school wisely are more likely to succeed. Developing strong study habits, effective time management skills, and the ability to handle pressure can make a significant difference when faced with the demands of college or a job.
Caddo Magnet High School teachers and counselors understand that achieving excellence in high school has become more crucial than ever. They encourage their students to explore different career paths and gain exposure to various industries. Internships, job shadows, and career guidance can help students make informed decisions about their future. By actively seeking out these opportunities, students can
Grace Miller Hailey Huguet Jack Randall Logan O'Callaghan Ni Daodiscover their passions, develop valuable skills, and enhance their resumes. This proactive approach ultimately gives them a competitive edge when entering the workforce.
Being prepared for the ACT should be a priority of every student who plans to attend college, whether they attend Caddo Magnet or any of the High Schools in Shreveport-Bossier. ACT prep books can be found at Barnes and Noble, or online.

We also provide a 6-page, proprietary score report at the conclusion of each test. This report is a game changer for the student in that it diagnoses problem areas and pacing issues.” The prep classes include intensive test prep and practice exams. Raj Letchuman Ruby Knoebel Sebastian SchaanScott Chafin Ballpark to Courtroom: is Making a Difference.

Why is a commitment to justice important in America? That is a question that Scott Chafin answered at age 13 when he decided to become an attorney. This month SB Magazine sat down with Shreveport attorney Scott Chafin to explore his unique journey from the baseball field to protecting people in the courtroom.
How did you know at such an early age that you wanted to be an attorney?
Sports was my passion growing up. My grandfather played in the NFL, one of my uncles played for the Saints, and another played quarterback at LSU. So sports was a part of my life from the day I was born. My dad instilled in me a love for baseball.
We moved around growing up, and at age 13, I was living in a small town. My summer baseball team was good, and everyone expected us to compete for the State Championship. Three days before the tournament, our kitchen phone rang. My dad answered. When he got off the phone, he gave me the piece of news that made me decide to be the attorney I am today.
The coach of our rival team was on the State tournament board. He got them to pass a new rule that prohibited kids who lived more than 80 miles away from their team’s home base from playing in the tournament. The coach knew we lived 83 miles from where my team was based.

He used his position of influence to unfairly exclude a 13-year-old boy from doing what he loved most. I was angry. Honestly, it still motivates me. The team photo from that tournament without me in it sits on my desk to this day. I swore back then that I would stand up for people who were not treated fairly. And that’s what I am doing. I fight for the people who don’t make the rules.
Wow, thanks for sharing that story with our readers. You have a personal connection to fighting for people’s rights. How do you protect people in your work?
Some corporations turn a blind eye to safety in favor of profit. I stand up to those corporations and fight for the people they hurt. In my career, I have represented people with every imaginable injury. And every case I have worked came about because the corporation refused to accept responsibility. I protect people by holding these corporations accountable in court.
That certainly takes a commitment to people. What do you love most about the people you represent?
I love the lifetime bonds I form with my clients. I represent hard-working people and families. Often our work together can dramatically change their lives. I remember an oilfield injury case I had once. Things went downhill quickly after my client got hurt. His family was living in a trailer with no air conditioning. He had to choose between buying food and buying gas.

Now, fast forward to the end of the case. His refrigerator is fully stocked. He has a new air-conditioned, 3-bedroom brick home and used the money to start a new oilfield service company. The last time I went to his house, we couldn’t talk long because he was leaving to drive his daughter to a softball tournament. It amazes me what happens when you fight for justice.
Tell us something that people don’t know about you.
Behind my office, I have a baseball field and an indoor batting cage. It started as a way to keep my children close while I worked late nights and weekends. It has grown into a place for the entire community. Several teams use the field for practice. We have some events planned to open the field to more people in the community.

When I was growing up, I always had a free place to go practice. There is no charge for using our place. For me, it is a way to share the traditions that were so important in my childhood and made me who I am today.
What is on the horizon for you?
I am the incoming President of the Louisiana Associate for Justice. I am humbled to lead an organization that fights for people and ensures everyone has full access to the courts. I am honored to carry that torch as the LAJ President next year. I believe in justice, and I will keep protecting people as long as God allows.
Summer is almost in the rear-view mirror
and it’s back to school time already! That means new clothes and uniforms, new teachers, fresh haircuts, sports practice, and more school supplies. New routines are upon us. Teachers are preparing their classrooms, participating in training, and finalizing course work. Parents will soon be making lunches and helping with homework again.
We wish all students, parents, and teachers a safe and successful school year!

ST. JOSEPH CATHOLIC SCHOOL
Being a faith-filled school that upholds family values and a way of life in line with Church teaching is truly what makes St. Joseph Catholic School special. St. Joseph continues to grow under the administration team’s fifth year (Clayton Cobb, principal, and Katherine Suckle, assistant principal) with 320 students enrolled for the upcoming school year. In line with the school’s motto, “Academic Excellence Surrounded by Faith,” St. Joseph Catholic School answers the call to form the entire person, partnering with parents so that each child is formed in virtue and academically prepared for success K3 through 8th grade, and beyond.

The school’s forty new families this year will find that the teachers, support staff, and administration all provide the love and support needed for students to become responsible members within their families, the Church, and the community in which we live. This begins at an early age by providing the way for each student to hear and respond to the call to serve God and one another in kindness. Such virtues are taught each day at St. Joseph for the sake of living out this Gospel message. It’s a great time to be a Falcon!
CENTENARY COLLEGE
Centenary College of Louisiana welcomed its largest incoming class since 2011 this fall and continues to look ahead to its 200th anniversary in 2025. This year, students who attended the College’s signature Centenary in Paris program were invited to create a shared memory of their time in Paris through the submission of their favorite photographs taken during CIP. Those pictures were curated by College faculty into a book published by the Centenary Press, and 120 of the photos were featured in a large-scale collaborative exhibition at Shreveport’s R.W. Norton Art Gallery that drew more than 1,000 visitors in August and September.
Centenary’s popular new major in kinesiology was also officially launched in August, and a new guaranteed interview agreement with the MD program at LSU Health Shreveport joins several other existing partnerships that provide pathways for Centenary students seeking careers in medicine and allied health. Hurley School of Music professor Dr. James Eakin, a Centenary alumnus, won the prestigious 2022 American Prize in composition for his choral work #twitter-
lieder, which was performed by the Centenary College Choir this season.

While the highly anticipated return of varsity football is still months away, head coach Byron Dawson has recruited a strong cohort of players who are up early for daily practice and looking forward to playing conference opponents in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) in fall 2024.
With a mission to prepare global citizens to live productive lives of vitality and purpose, Centenary is proud to be Shreveport-Bossier City’s college.

Mr. Veit’s experience ranges from being a father of four with his wife Lynace to his work at the Louisiana School and Saint Gregory’s University in Oklahoma. His degrees include a Bachelors in Music Education, a Masters in Higher Education Administration with an emphasis on Counseling, and a Masters in Theology and Christian Ministry from the Franciscan University of Steubenville.
The Promethean boards are part of our ongoing project to have the best technology available to all K3-Eighth grade students in support of our mission to provide excellence in education. JEKYLL ISLAND, GEORGIA
Just off the coast of Georgia lies an idyllic island escape called Jekyll Island. It’s brimming with immaculate nature and compelling history—without the crowds—making it one of the coolest places to visit. This oasis truly represents a getaway in the lap of luxury.

During the Gilded Age of the late 19th century, Jekyll Island was an exclusive retreat for the world’s wealthiest people, including William Vanderbilt, J.P. Morgan, and William Rockefeller. These influential people were members of the Jekyll Island Club, the world’s richest and most exclusive club at the time.
After World War II, the island was sold to the state of Georgia as a state park, but many of the mansions remain in-tact. For those who crave a more deluxe retreat, visit the Beachview Club Hotel for waterfront dining and entertainment, beachside camping or golfing at the Jekyll Island Golf Club.
While these activities may appeal to the finer things in life, the island is focused on preserving its island ecosystem—only 35 percent of the land is developed due to state-protected lands. This lends itself to Jekyll Island’s laidback, unhurried lifestyle. Beaches are plentiful, but if you want to do something more active, biking is a popular activity and mode of transportation along the 20 miles of bike paths sprawled throughout.
BROKEN BOW, OKLAHOMA

If you’re looking for a beautiful nature spot with minimal crowds, add Broken Bow to your bucket list. Located in southeast Oklahoma, the destination is only about a two-and-a-half-hour drive from Shreveport. This proximity makes it a camping and glamping hotspot, perfect for a weekend getaway. Broken Bow is tucked away in the forested hills at the confluence of Mountain Fork River and Broken Bow Lake. Broken Bow is the gateway to Beaver Bend State Park and as you may imagine it’s full of outdoor activities.
There you’ll have a little bit of everything: pine trees and wildlife galore, lakes, hiking trails, state parks, and so much more. For some visitors that means staying at campsites or RV parks and for others, it means cabins in Broken Bow Airbnb cabin rentals, which are sometimes as nice as five-star resorts. Either way, it means an outdoor getaway in a beautiful region of the country.
ST. AUGUSTINE, FLORIDA
Many American travelers escape to Florida for its beaches, theme parks, and endless sunshine. But in the process, they overlook the charm of America’s oldest city, St. Augustine—a great place for a romantic getaway.
Founded by the Spanish in 1565, St. Augustine is the oldest continuously occupied European settlement in North America. This old town is home to 144 historic blocks lined with Spanish colonial architecture, public parks, and museums. St. Augustine’s colonial charm—best conveyed by the city’s 17th-century castle, horse-drawn carriages, and narrow cobblestone streets— is still on full display today. Though it’s situated on the coast, St. Augustine is worlds apart from your typical beach destination. It’s just a 50-minute drive from Jacksonville, making it a convenient weekend getaway from Florida’s largest city.
GATLINBURG, TENNESSEE

Located at the gateway of the Great Smoky Mountains, this family-friendly, mountain town in eastern Tennessee is one of the best hidden gems and vacation spots in the US. From precious scenery to its adrenaline-inducing activities, outdoorsy types will love everything this small town has to offer. Gatlinburg has so many fun things to do for the whole family, including whitewater rafting, biking, horseback riding, and ziplining. It’s also connected to 600 miles of hiking trails, ideal for hiking and snapping photos of some of the state’s most scenic landscapes. You’ll also want to check out nearby Pigeon Forge, another one of the best places to vacation in the US. For a bird’s eye view of the town and mountainous terrain, take an elevator to the top of the Gatlinburg Space Needle, an observation deck with 360° views. Nearby, there’s also a 2-mile-long cable car that brings you to Ober Gatlinburg—a popular ski area and amusement park. This cool complex has everything from indoor ice skating and water rides to wildlife encounters.
TEXAS HILL COUNTRY

They say everything is bigger in Texas, and the Texas Hill Country, located in Central Texas, offers amazing outdoor adventures, charming small towns, and striking landscapes. Not far from Austin and San Antonio, this town in Central Texas offers a little bit of everything: stunning views, amazing food, scenic vineyards, and amazing architecture. It’s the whole enchilada. There are many amazing things to do in the Texas Hill Country. Fredericksburg is one of the best places in Texas to see the bluebonnets. As its name suggests, Fredericksburg has German roots. It was made into the vibrant town it is today from German immigrants who settled here in the early 1800s. They brought with them authentic German food, great beer, and fine wines, which are front and center today. Take advantage of the live music scene, which is a close second to that of Austin. Explore the breathtaking lavender fields that Fredericksburg is known for. Stroll the Marktplatz and German-style churches.
Enchanted Rock State Natural Area is great for hiking. Beat the Texas heat by floating in the river at New Braunfels.
You can also go swimming in the Hill Country’s many swimming holes and waterfalls. Jacob’s Well in Wimberley and Hamilton Pool near Austin are the top favorites. Other great small towns to explore include Luckenbach, Johnson City, and Gruene.

Visitors can see the highlights of Texas Hill Country in two to three days. You need a car for the road trip since there is no public transportation in the Hill Country. You can either stay in Austin or the small towns. For a more budget-friendly vacation try camping in one of Texas’s state parks like Pedernales Falls State Park.
BIRMINGHAM, ALABAMA

Once a center of the iron, steel and railroad industries, this Alabama metropolis shares its name with Birmingham, England, a city with a similar industrial heritage. Many of the city’s top attractions pay homage to its mining past, including Red Mountain Park and the Vulcan Park & Museum. This southern city was also at the epicenter of the civil rights movement, and visitors will want to explore the Civil Rights District and some of its significant attractions, including the 16th Street Baptist Church and the Civil Rights Institute.
Once you’ve familiarized yourself with Birmingham’s past, get to know its present-day identity. Check out the excellent art museum and then head to Railroad Park, known as “Birmingham’s Living Room,” to socialize with the locals. More than one-fourth of Alabama residents call this vibrant city home, known today for its live music scene, verdant parks and championship golf courses. You’ll also find an array of antique stores and art galleries, as well as a burgeoning food scene.
HOT SPRINGS, ARKANSAS
Nestled in Arkansas’ Ouachita Mountains about 55 miles southwest of Little Rock, Hot Springs serves as a beacon for outdoor enthusiasts and relaxation seekers from around the country. A network of springs inspires the town’s name and attracts a majority of its visitors. In fact, these thermal waters have beckoned travelers for thousands of years, starting with American Indians. Today, visitors flock to the town’s Bathhouse Row. Hot Springs’ naturally heated springs are protected as part of Hot Springs National Park, but the city and the park are intertwined in such a way that visitors may feel like they’re staying in the park itself.
While Arkansas may not immediately come to mind when travelers think about dining, entertainment and shopping, the modest town of Hot Springs also checks all those attractions off the list with its casino, water park and wide variety of restaurants and boutiques. Meanwhile, the city’s rich history and unique buildings delight amateur (and professional) historians and architects. Still, the main reasons to visit are to bathe in the town’s namesake hot springs and revel in the surrounding wilderness.

Literacy Volunteers at

Centenary College
Illiteracy among adults in America is a tragic reality that affects thousands of individuals and families. Studies done by the National Literacy Institute show that around 54% of adults in the United States read below a 6th-grade level and around 21% are illiterate. In Northwest Louisiana, around 1 in every 4 people are functionally illiterate. Since the mid-1980s, Literacy Volunteers at Centenary College have been dedicated to fighting the battle against functional illiteracy in northwest Louisiana. LVCC Executive Director Patrick Quick began volunteering with LVCC in 2021 and officially accepted the Executive Director offer from the board of directors in July 2023. “The idea of tutoring may sound a little daunting, but it's not. My first student was a Basic Literacy learner. With online tools, student workbooks, a little bravery, and a strong sense of humor, my students and I have had wonderful times together. It's rewarding for teachers and students,” says Quick.
Formerly Literacy Volunteers of America, LVCC stands by their mission: teaching literacy; bringing hope; changing lives. When the organization initially opened its doors, it only offered Basic Literacy. They’ve since grown to add programs such as Pre-HiSET (GED) Learning, English as a Second Language, and Spoken English Learning as the need presented itself. Students are tutored one on one or in small groups by volunteers from Centenary and the surrounding areas. Quick explains, “Literacy is the closest we come to true magic. It unlocks individual potential in terms of improved personal satisfaction, family life, work opportunities, the standard of living, and so much more”. The number of tutors at LVCC varies depending on the time of year, student demand, and tutor availability. For example, there were 12 active tutors during this past school year and eight this summer.
When COVID hit, LVCC took some blows like several other organizations. Programs like US Citizenship assistance, Health Literacy Learning, Digital Literacy, and Safety Learning came to a halt due to limits on on-site classes. Quick explains, “These program offerings will be re-enlivened as student demand and tutor availability increas-
es. ASVAB (Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery) Learning is on the table, too. The ASVAB test measures a young adult’s strengths and potential for success in military training. LVCC’s goal will be to prepare young men and women for the ASVAB test to broaden their options for military specialty positions.” Although COVID was a cause for adjustment, there was some light that came from the darkness. Zoom classes were offered to students during the pandemic and continued even after the world began to open back up. “If necessity is the mother of invention, then adversity must surely be the father of reinvention. (Johnny Flora) held true for both LVCC and ProLiteracy America, of whom we are an affiliate,” says Quick. He went on to say, “Our LVCC tutors decided out of necessity that they would not abandon their students to the COVID unpleasantness. Several of our long-time loyal tutors reinvented their tutoring style to accommodate their students with Zoom learning. As a result, they can successfully tutor anyone, anywhere, even in other nations. We can do so locally, as well”.
LVCC has begun to partner with various organizations, such as Providence House and Heart of Hope, to assist more adults that need their services. LVCC shares its ProLiteracy print and digital curriculum in exchange for teaching knowledge and potential tutoring opportunities to further its reach. LVCC also works with BPCC College Transition Program by providing access to their Basic Literacy programs in exchange for access to state-approved literacy skills assessments and admission to their Transition Program for LVCC students. LVCC is currently recruiting tutors and volunteer mentors/cheerleaders in anticipation of student demand in September, especially for their new online Pre-HiSET (GED) students. Those who are interested in experiencing the fun and gratification of tutoring and volunteering are encouraged to contact LVCC offices by email, literacyvolunteers837@gmail.com, or by phone, 318-8692411.

Breaking Barriers and Leading the Way: Cindy Dyer’s
Journey in Becoming President of Louisiana REALTORS® Association
By: Kim CondonImagine shattering barriers and making history as the first woman from Northwest Louisiana to become the President of the Louisiana REALTORS® Association.

Cindy Dyer’s empowering story demonstrates the leadership and achievements that have led her to become the first woman from Northwest Louisiana to serve as President of Louisiana REALTORS®, a membership-based trade organization of real estate professionals.
Join us in celebrating Cindy Dyer’s exceptional journey of determination, passion, and achievement, as she leaves an indelible mark in Louisiana’s vibrant real estate realm.
Hailing from Haughton, Louisiana, and licensed with Pinnacle Realty Advisors, Dyer brings with her an impressive background of over 19 years of experience as a REALTOR® and Associate Broker. Spanning seven parishes, she has emerged as a consistent multimillion-dollar producer, excelling in diverse fields, including new construction, existing home sales, relocations, military reassignments, first-time home buyers, investments, and commercial properties. As a recognized REALTOR® of the Year by the Northwest Louisiana Association of REALTORS® in 2016, she has not only achieved excellence but has also taken her expertise to the next level, completing the prestigious National Association of REALTORS® Commitment to Excellence program, as well as being a graduate of the Real Estate Institute and Military Relocation Professional Certification from the National Association of REALTORS®.
As Louisiana REALTORS® CEO Norman Morris aptly puts it, Dyer’s appointment as President holds the promise of a profound positive impact on the association’s more than 16,000 members. Her leadership style, characterized by dedication and vision, is set to usher in positive changes and initiatives within the association and beyond.
The driving force behind her remarkable success is Cin-
dy’s genuine commitment to treating others as you would want to be treated, which has defined her path as a REALTOR®.
“Seeing the joy and satisfaction on my client’s faces when they achieve their goal of homeownership is incredibly fulfilling,” said Dyer.
Influenced by her father’s belief in homeownership and strong family values, Cindy’s passion for helping others took root early on.
Cindy fondly shared, “My Dad, a World War II veteran, utilized the GI Bill to purchase his first home post-war. Though I wasn’t present during that time as I came later after my three older brothers, his belief in homeownership creating a safe and stable environment for the family was instilled in me.”
Cindy is steadfast in her commitment to ensuring REALTORS®’ voices are heard in the decision-making process. She emphasizes, “Advocacy is a top priority, ensuring that our voices are heard in policy-making and legislative decisions that impact the real estate industry and facilitate a thriving real estate market. Being a part of the largest trade association, our members have a powerful platform to advocate for their profession, shape legislation, and ensure a favorable business environment for the real estate industry. It brings together the collective strength of REALTORS®, enabling them to help protect property rights, promote homeownership, and contribute to the growth and prosperity of the real estate industry.”
With the fast-paced market demands, staying ahead is paramount. Cindy’s vision also includes prioritizing the development of specialized training on emerging technologies, and sustainable practices while fostering diversity and inclusion.
Cindy also places importance on fostering a collaborative environment among REALTORS® and industry partners, creating networking opportunities and a seamless knowledge-sharing platform.
“I am strongly committed to fostering strong relationships between REALTORS® and the residents of Louisiana and the communities we serve,” Dyer said.

“Bridging the gap between REALTORS® and our communities will not only build a foundation of trust and collaboration, but it will create stronger communities and promote homeownership.”
With the wisdom of her experience, Cindy discussed the crucial role that the political climate plays in shaping the real estate industry.
“As State President, I will actively engage with policymakers, legislators, and industry partners to advocate for policies that support our members and promote a favorable business environment. By capitalizing on our association’s collective strength and engaging in strategic lobbying efforts, we can influence legislation, protect property rights, and create more opportunities for our members. With these opportunities, we can enhance the association’s value proposition, elevate the professional standing of REALTORS® in Louisiana, and empower our members to thrive in an ever-evolving real estate landscape,” concluded Dyer with determination.
The election of the first female State President from the Northwest Louisiana region is not only a celebration of her remarkable achievements but also a resounding testament to her exceptional leadership qualities. Her message for aspiring women in real estate is simple but powerful: believe in yourself and your abilities.
In the pursuit of making a significant impact in real estate, Dyer also believes it is crucial to stay informed and to continuously enhance your knowledge and skills.

“Seek out opportunities for developing your skills, whether it’s attending conferences, pursuing real estate designations and certifications, or staying updated on industry and market trends.”
Cindy Dyer’s journey, achievements, and upcoming presidency inspire the real estate community, representing a shining example of breaking barriers, leading with integrity, and shaping a positive and dynamic future for Louisiana REALTORS®. As she takes the helm, we celebrate her historic achievement and eagerly anticipate the positive impact she will make as President of the association in 2024 and beyond.

JONATHAN FAYARD
PINNACLE REALTY ADVISORS RESIDENTIAL REALTOR

As I embark on my 7th year as a Real Estate Agent, I've realized that serving my hometown of Shreveport/Bossier City is truly my heart's passion. I've been fortunate enough to assist several hundred home buyers and sellers in their journeys over the years and each deal is just as exciting to me as the last. My business has become strictly referral based which is something I do not take lightly and am humbled to be thought of as the "go-to" Real Estate Professional by so many. My goal is to make sure each client is cared for, listened to, and made to feel comfortable and informed throughout the process. Often my customers are impressed by my contact base, my extensive market knowledge, and when they call or text me, they speak with me. I've been able to build a strong business as an individual agent ranking among the top 25 in sales volume year to date in 2023 among over 1600 licensees in Northwest Louisiana. I contribute my success to my strong work ethic and by following the golden rule of treating those around me the way I’d like to be treated. I consider myself more of a Real Estate Advisor or Consultant rather than a Salesman. Real Estate excites me and like earlier mentioned, is my heart's passion and provides me with much fulfillment.

For my home sellers, I want to highlight and accentuate your home's best features. I love to create a story and an experience around your home that gives buyers that feeling of "home" the second they walk through the front door. Professional photography, creative advertising, light or heavy staging, elaborate descriptions, and many other resources will help get your home maximum exposure and will help us stand above the competition.
For my home buyers, no need to be overwhelmed, this process is so fun and I’ll be by your side through it all. Let's sit down and create that wish list of needs and wants in your dream home, discuss ideal locations, review budgets, and go over the process step by step. I will be your advocate and want nothing more than to hear you say "This is the one." At that point, I know I've done my job and I'll do what it takes to make it yours.
Whatever your Residential Real Estate needs are in Northwest Louisiana, it would be an honor to earn your business.

CHESSICA HARVILLE
318 Real Estate L.L.C.
Upon notification of an accepted offer on a home for my client(s), after all the searching, the laughs, the second and third showings, the miles, and the nerve-wrenching negotiations to ensure every dollar is being strategically managed to the advantage of my buyers and/or sellers, I pick up my phone and ask my favorite question, “I’ve got some good news and bad news… which do you want first?” They always pick the bad news first because it’s anticipated, but the only bad news is that they’re going to have to start packing some boxes.
The good news is they have an accepted offer for the home they’re selling or the home they’ve already imagined as being their own. I’m genuinely as, if not more excited as my clients when they’ve realized they won and they got everything they wanted. This whole experience loses its luster when treated as another business transaction. That’s not my intent as your agent. I’m a professional, I’m a friend, I’ve educated myself to the maximum extent in Louisiana Law, and marketing, I’m a Certified Military Relocation Professional (MRP), a Certified Military Residential Specialist (CMRS), I’m consistent as a multimillion-dollar producer over the past 10 years and am ranked in the Top 20% in NWLA. It’s an absolute pleasure working with each and every one of my clients and having the opportunity to represent them during one of their biggest decisions, and I look forward to making that call to ask you my favorite question. “I’ve got some good news and some bad news… which do you want first?”

It Makes A Difference: Why Work with a REALTOR®

The state’s real estate market has been fast-paced and competitive, primarily because the available inventory is low. Whether you are dealing in residential or commercial, especially in this climate, real estate transactions are time-consuming and complicated.
Is it worth your time and money to hire someone who has kept up with industry changes inside and out, and is engaged in the business full time? Definitely! A REALTOR® who is knowledgeable and professional will save you time and money. Real estate licensees who are members of the National Association of REALTORS® (NAR) and the state association, Louisiana REALTORS® (LR), market themselves as REALTORS®, and they are accountable to a strict Code of Ethics to remain in good standing. Partner with someone who can handle all the details, so you don’t have to.
What makes a knowledgeable and professional REALTOR®?

Real estate transactions involve one of the biggest financial investments you will ever experience. Here are four ways to ensure you are well-represented: Save the stress. A Professional REALTOR® should make the process feel seamless, handling issues that may arise during negotiations, inspections, the mortgage process, etc. REALTORS® are better equipped to handle difficult situations in your best interest, keeping you at ease during what could be a long and stressful process. More importantly, they should

commit to maintaining regular communication from day one until closing so that you are always in the loop on your transaction and prepared for the next step. A REALTOR® will keep you focused on your negotiating position, especially in a multiple offer situation. Leveraging the service of a good REALTOR® to manage your transaction can save you thousands of dollars and unnecessary stress. Time is money. Scheduling open houses and showings can be overwhelming.
An advocate looking out for you and only you. Professional REALTORS® are part of an association to keep a pulse on the ever-changing rules and regulations governing property sales, which can directly affect the market. Remember, this is a legal transaction with a lot of moving parts. You need someone who fully understands the entire process and brings expertise to the transaction. Select a REALTOR® that understands your needs and puts your interests at the forefront. Make sure to work with a REALTOR® that has good relationships with others associated with the transaction –this means expert recommendations on professionals to help you navigate any unforeseen issues.
Get the inside scoop. Your REALTOR®’s knowledge of the community and information about specific neighborhoods and development plans is invaluable. REALTORS® are often pillars of their community, serving as a collective voice and invested in issues that protect homeownership and property rights. They know the market and have the tools to identify and connect great opportunities for buyers and sellers. The engaged REALTOR® pays attention to the constant flow of information from NAR & LR on issues that impact the real estate market. A professional you can trust. Committed to learning. A trusted REALTOR® goes beyond licensing requirements to seek out educational opportunities, like nationally recognized designations or certifications. Knowledgeable REALTORS® go beyond the minimum continuing education required for licensees and have a thirst for information to better serve you. They may leverage the experience of their colleagues or associate with companies that offer ample growth opportunities. Be on the lookout for REALTORS® with valid credentials in their signature or business cards - like ABR, CCIM, CRS, GRI, SRS. Taking and investing in these additional steps better prepares agents to handle tricky transactions with skill and poise.
Louisiana REALTORS® (LR) is the statewide trade association of 16,000+ residential and commercial practitioners. Its mission is to connect REALTORS® to resources for success while championing economic development and serving as an advocate for homeowners and private property rights. There are 10 local associations across the state under the LR umbrella – each one provides location-specific resources and service for its members. Unlock and see why a REALTOR® is the key. TWIN BLENDS: SBC HISTORY Rediscovreing
In a nutshell, we are identical twin brothers who were born and raised in Shreveport. We are best friends and played sports together for many years but when we stopped playing, we wanted to find something that we could still do together. We always liked U.S. history but weren’t that interested in local history until about eight years ago. That’s when we were at the Northwest Louisiana Archives at LSUS looking for pic-

tures of the Southern Hills area where we grew up. We stumbled across hundreds of thousands of old pictures of Shreveport, Bossier City, and the surrounding areas! Some of those photos (actually negatives) were from as far back as the 1890s. We were hooked! We asked and were given permission by the LSUS Archives to share, on Facebook, the pictures that we were finding. We started posting them on the Facebook
page “If You Grew Up in Southern Hills, Shreveport” and the response was fantastic! We then created our own Facebook page called “Twin Blends Photography” later renamed “Twin Blends Northwest History Hunters” which better describes what we do. We post the old photos there and sometimes we merge them together with “now” pictures taken from the same spot to “blend” the Past and Present together! That’s where the name “Blends” comes from! We have hundreds of posts, with thousands of old photos and several hundred videos. Go to our Facebook page and join our over 22,000 followers (we call them teammates) to see them all! We have tons more that we will be posting!
We have had the honor of being allowed access to the most amazing negative and photographic collections. We have searched through literally hundreds of thousands of negatives and photos at the Northwest Louisiana Archives which includes collections from Grabill, Rob -
"A GOOD SNAPSHOT KEEPS A MOMENT FROM RUNNING AWAY. — E. WELTY"
ert Menasco, Jack Barham and the entire Shreveport Times collection as well as many others. Recently, we were given the entire Thurman C. Smith collection, by Thurman and his son Scot, to go through and pull out the historically important photos so they could be donated to the Archives!

We feel like God has given us a platform where we could not only continue to spend time together, but HE also gave us a way to give back to the community that we grew up in and love. We are by no means history experts. We are just two guys who enjoy local history and enjoy bringing it to others.
Our mission is to show people the history and beauty of this area in a fun and exciting way. It’s a way for us to connect people to the past and bring everyone together. We want to honor the forgotten men and women of the past who helped build Shreveport, Bossier City, and the surrounding areas. We also want to honor the legendary photographers of the past like Burch and Bill Grabill, Thurman C. Smith, Jack Barham, Langston McEachern and others who captured history so we could enjoy it for years!

Our Motto: You have to look to the Past to appreciate the Present!
What better platform than the beautiful SB Magazine to share our work with the people of this area. As we say at the end of all of our videos: “At Twin Blends Northwest Louisiana History Hunters, the Past and Present are about to Collide!”
Stay tuned as the Mangham brothers add to our knowledge of Shreveport-Bossier from “then to now” in every issue of SB Magazine.
Midcentury Midcentury A

Modern Home Modern Home BLENDED, BALANCED, AND BOLD.
Magic is made when personal style and midcentury spunk come together. See how a couple’s renovation of their single-family home integrates their custom design by utilizing an abundance of natural light, art, and key midcentury features.
Shreveport, LA. “Around here, this is fairly unique,” admits business owners Frank and Jordan Thaxton of their recently renovated six-bedroom, five-and-a-half-bathroom, midcentury modern home in the heart of Shreveport’s Eastridge neighborhood. “It’s not built in the conventional way that most houses are.”

But that distinctive look makes this home shine even more.

Admittedly, when Frank and his wife, Jordan, started looking for their “forever home” in Shreveport, they struggled to find something that had everything both were looking for. “Either the house wasn’t right, or it needed too much work, or building something from scratch wouldn’t be cost-efficient,” says Jordan. “And, honestly, we never really considered the midcentury style,” recalls Frank, “until one night Jordan found this house.”
For Jordan, it was love at first sight. The lines, the details, and the “really big windows.” To Frank, not so much. Until he saw it was on a three-acre lot. “Yes, it needed a lot of work. But show me a three-acre lot in the heart of Shreveport? You won’t find one for sale.”
The 6,973-square-foot home was originally designed in 1949 by the iconic architect Lester Haas for the Weiss Family. It is surrounded by dense, jungle-like foliage on three sides and features the clean lines and indoor-to-out-

door transitions that midcentury homes are known and loved for.
After purchasing the home, Frank and Jordan enlisted the help of local architect Jeff Spikes of iArchitecture to help transform the house into their forever home. The goal—to balance the work of the original designer with contemporary functionality. This meant a thorough overhaul of the interior and exterior of the house.
“Getting the details right is always key to any successful home design,” says Frank. “Jeff Spikes, Chad Rosen and Chad Jeane put on paper what Jordan and I had in our heads. They had some great ideas to help restore it, respect its character, and create more connections between the inside and outside of the home.”
Once Frank and Jordan knew what they wanted to do, and the plans to do it, then came the next step. Renovation.
Preservation and Renovation

To help make sense of the relationships between the main rooms of the house—how the scale worked in their favor and render the home more livable—the Thaxton’s opened the “heart” of the home to allow natural light in. “The living room, dining room, kitchen, and den were all cut off from one another,” Frank admits. “They were connected, technically, but there was not much sharing of space. Our primary goal was to increase connections throughout these spaces—through the interior spaces and out towards the back yard.”
Today, these two living spaces—the living room and the den— feature two different design aesthetics and are “connected” by the dining room. The living room, a more formal gathering space, features warm tones outfitted with a large custom sectional with two chairs. It’s just one of the rooms great for entertaining. The den, the family’s favorite room, is informally called the “Little Red Fireplace Room.” And, according to Frank and Jordan, the redesign of the home centered around the vintage fireplace that was installed in the late 1960s.
“This is the room we spend most of our time in with friends and family. It is a small room with two small chairs, a couch, and our ‘little red fireplace.’ There is no television. Great conversations and family time with whoever is with us take place in that room.”
The Thaxton’s love to entertain. To suit their lifestyle, the couple decided to open part of the wall that previously separat-

ed the kitchen from the dining room. The change better connects the space to the dining room and increases the available natural light. “Now we can continue that tradition of hosting parties,” says Jordan.
Three walls were removed, and two new ones were added, along with a load-bearing beam to help “open up” the space. New, custom cabinetry, a Quartzite island, and granite perimeter countertops with a bronze brick backsplash in the kitchen reflect the home’s midcentury roots, while a commercial-grade Wolf oven and stove, as well as a Thermador refrigerator, freezer, and wine cooler offer modern convenience—especially when it comes to gathering and entertaining.
The selection of the furniture inside these spaces helps provide additional details. One of the most notable pieces is the stunning ‘cactus root’ table in the dining area. Easily sitting twelve people, it is 100 inches in diameter and weighs nearly one thousand pounds.

Nearby, the ‘little red fireplace,’ coupled with the views of the backyard, perfectly balances the connection between these rooms.
When reflecting on the design and build processes of this home, one of the biggest takeaways for Frank and Jordan was how carefully the exterior space was shaped and created in relation to the interior.
“Throughout the design process, attention to design was given equally to the interior and exterior experiences,” he notes. When we purchased the property, the original back patio was only three-by-twelve feet, so we added a pool, a courtyard, and decking.
Reimagining The Classic Design
Details like the custom kitchen cabinets, a unique light pendant, and subway tile all nod to classic midcentury design while maintaining a new and fresh air. “The original home had so many midcentury design elements—some we could save, others we could not,” the Thaxtons say.
Today, the home feels both delightfully midcentury and modern. The home’s décor strikes a balance between midcentury and treasured pieces—all personal to Frank and Jordan—and perfectly complements the original design with updated sensibilities without feeling overdone. The

ambiance the couple chose for the interiors was an eclectic approach, an intermingling of bold, geometric, classical, and midcentury pieces, all assorted with modern elements (as well as a touch of the 1970s). Special attention was given to blending the texture of materials to create interest. The intention was for the environment to possess a touch of low-key, sophisticated elegance through careful editing.
“One of the things we always must be concerned about is adequate wall space to accommodate some large pieces of art we have collected over the years,” Frank notes. “The scale of the pieces and the rooms in which they were to be installed were coordinated with the furniture, taking into account color combinations and subject matter.”
The color palette was also carefully considered so that it would respectfully reflect the period’s architecture.

“We referenced vintage photos to determine the original colors of the home. This returns the home to be true to its roots,” Jordan points out. “To provide a neutral background for the art collection, we chose a warm white for the walls and medium-gray porcelain floor tiles and carpet for the interior palette.”
All the floors, tile, carpet, and light fixtures came from HomeLUXE Flooring and Lighting. The product is a house that is tastefully stylish but does not shy away from making a statement. And even though it was renovated—there is a

timeless quality about it.
“Our home is one of the most important things for us. We spend most of our time here and it needed to be part of us,” Frank continues. “The furnishings include a mix of pieces that have been in both our families for generations, as well as pieces bought recently from Dallas, New Orleans, and Little Rock. No matter who comes inside this house, they all instantly enjoy the space.
In all, this home remodel was executed with historic preservation in mind, modernizing both the interior and exterior while celebrating the classic midcentury architecture. “There is no bad spot in this home,” Jordan says. “Every room reflects our design aesthetic, blends our personalities, and reminds us of how blessed we are to be its caretakers.”

The balanced approach certainly paid off! The results speak for themselves.

Frank and Jordan Thaxton would like to thank each of the following individuals and companies who supplied consulting, products, materials, as well as time and energy for this project: Architectural Design—Jeff Spikes, Chad Rosen, and Chad Jeane, iArchitecture; Plumbing Fixtures—Tiffany Warner, Coburns; Flooring and Lighting—HomeLUXE; Artwork—Vanicka Art; Glass Artwork—Ryan Pepe, Sanctuary Glass Studio; Cabinets—Tom Salzer; Assisting with Furniture Design—Myron Griffing; Landscape Installation— Chris Cassio, Cassio Property Service.

HOW DO YOU GET TO PRACTICE! CarnegieHall?
BY SEVA MAYFor 182 years, Carnegie Hall has set the international standard for musical excellence as the aspirational destination for the world’s finest artists.

For Shreveport native, Rocky Maddox, performing at Carnegie Hall is an experience that words can hardly do justice. It’s a moment that surely must have filled him with wonder, awe, and a deep sense of privilege. To have the opportunity to grace the stage of such an iconic venue is nothing short of incredible.

The feeling began to build long before he stepped onto the stage. The anticipation, the nerves, and the excitement all intertwined as he prepared to share his craft with an audience that appreciates artistry at its finest.
“The acoustics in the theatre are incredible. For me, when I’m singing a song – the right song, in the right place – it feels like I’m flying,” describes Rocky. The over 2800-seat hall has four balconies. From the bottom row all the way to the top of the fourth balcony, the acoustics embrace every note, enhancing every sound in ways that makes the heart soar.
Rocky began singing in front of an audience at the age of 13 when his music minister encouraged him to sing a solo at church. Off he trotted to Christian Life Tapes and Books over on Jewella Avenue where he selected “He’s Still Working on Me” for his very first performance.
That’s all it took. He had found his calling. From that moment on, Rocky has shared his music with us at church and on local stages.
A natural comedic actor, Rocky has shined in the roles of Harold Hill in “The Music Man,” Gomez in “The Addam’s Family,” and Cosmé McMoon in “Souvenir” just to name a few. He landed at Carnegie Hall because of a lifelong friendship with two, equally talented people: Reagan Courtney and Cynthia Clawson. Rocky was a student at Louisiana Tech and decided to attend Temple Baptist in Ruston. Not knowing his way around the church, he opened a door, stepped in, and found himself face-to-face with Miss Clawson (who was there to perform a concert). The door swung shut and they were locked in. An instant friendship ensued. Clawson’s husband, Reagan Courtney was from Ruston and had always told Rocky that one day he was going to put him in one of his musicals. Reagan had written a Christian musical in 1973 that would become the largest-selling Christian musical of all time. Churches from all over the world have presented “Celebrate Life” and this year marked its 50th Anniversary. Where would you perform such a legendary musical? Why, at the legendary Carnegie Hall, of course.
Rocky had to be resuscitated when he was asked to play the role of the Apostle John at Carnegie Hall on June 24, 2023. One might say that performing at Carnegie Hall is not just a highlight of a career; it’s an unforgettable milestone in life. For Rocky, it was an experience that leaves an indelible mark on his soul – a reminder of what it means to be truly alive, connected through music and shared emotions. He is still on cloud nine. “I must say this whole thing has been one of the great honors of my life. It means so much because of the honor it brought to my dear friends, the kindness it has shown me as an artist, and, most importantly, because of the message that “Celebrate Life” has beautifully communicated for over 50 years about the love of Jesus.”
To perform on that renowned stage is both a privilege and an honor – one that forever changes how you perceive yourself as an artist. It becomes a touchstone for future endeavors, reminding you of what is possible when passion meets opportunity.
In short, performing at Carnegie Hall is like stepping into a realm where dreams become reality – where music transcends time and space, leaving both performer and audience forever transformed by its magic. Carnegie Hall truly lives up to its signature slogan: Bringing the Arts to Life!

New Destination Master Plan Looks to Frame the Future to 2040 and Beyond

If you mention tourism in Louisiana to the average person, northwest Louisiana is unlikely to even come to mind, overshadowed by the notoriety of New Orleans (see: “Louisiana’s Other Side” billboards). However, New Orleans’ tourist appeal can overwhelmingly be likened to about two weeks in the calendar year for Mardi Gras (Baton Rouge is really only significant to football fans), which leaves a void for the other 50 weeks in the American psyche that our region can fill. The newly rebranded Visit Shreveport-Bossier (VSB), formerly known as the Shreveport-Bossier Convention and Tourist Bureau, has joined collective forces from the Shreveport Chamber of Commerce, The Bossier Chamber of Commerce, and the African-American Chamber of Commerce to challenge locals’ and outsiders’ perspectives on the SBC’s tourist appeal going forward.

VSB (in conjunction with MMGY NextFactor) has developed a 10-Year Destination Master Plan, which you can view on their website, through surveys, town halls, and listening sessions to best gather the pulse of the community. This 10-Year Destination Master Plan utilized the voices of more than 200 people from the area to determine what locals thought would be the best outlook for the city’s future. Some of the things your voices in the community had to say were that Shreveport was a diverse and artsy community, while in Bossier City they perceive it to be more family-oriented. Both sides agreed their communities were rooted in
faith. Unfortunately, a tendency of residents to focus on the negatives of their cities was noticed. One resident posited, “Our biggest struggle is our defeatist attitude. Civic pride is looked down upon.” One thing residents were collectively overwhelmed by was the divisive and alarmist rhetoric in local and social media. Ultimately, the Master Plan was developed “…to enhance local quality of life and build unity in Caddo and Bossier parishes by optimizing the visitor economy to benefit as many local residents as possible from all socioeconomic backgrounds.”
One observation cited through the research was that “visitors oftentimes have a better opinion about a city than residents do.” As a transplant from another region of the country myself, I can attest to this. I have never seen the same negativity in the area that I have heard locals talk about. On a national scale, Money Magazine named Bossier City the best city to live in Louisiana in 2017, and in 2019 it was the only city in Louisiana to make their list of the 100 best cities to live in the United States. Could Bossier City in fact be, “The Best Louisiana Has to Offer?” Just speculating here. Another quip from a local resident in the research was that Shreveport-Bossier is “big enough to get lost in and small enough to be found.” This resident is on to something; you may be surprised to hear Shreveport dominates several of the country’s major cities in square mileage, including San Francisco, which could fit into Shreveport twice, with room left over. So, Shreveport is in
fact, “Bigger Than You Think.” Each city has other little-known traits like these that VSB is looking to capitalize on.

Ripe with outsiders’ perspectives is Barksdale Air Force Base, so what do some Airmen have to say? Garrett Jimenez, a Virginia native who has since been stationed elsewhere, said, “Shreveport-Bossier was a great place to live and the people were even better. The culture was beautiful, the east Texas influence and the rich Cajun culture combined made Bossier a tremendous place to live…the people of the area were some of the warmest, kind-hearted people I’ve ever met.” Greg Quailer, stationed here since 2010, said he and his family, “love the festivals and the parades, and our family’s favorite activity is the Shreveport Aquarium.” Could this overall sentiment be summed up as “We Got It Better Than We Think?” Again, just speculating here.
Another transplant (from the Dallas region) that has enjoyed the area and deemed it fit to stay for life is none other than the President and CEO of VSB, Stacy Brown. Stacy insists, “This is a 10-Year Destination Master Plan, but it’s not the Visit Shreveport-Bossier’s Destination Master Plan, it’s our community’s master plan.” Speaking of this community, if one thing were to come to mind for prospective visitors, Stacy says, “It’s really our diverse cultures and food here that attract people. We have some of the most friendly people ever…I think it’s more special than
just general southern hospitality.” And in case anyone has been wondering about living here compared with Dallas lately, Stacy gave Shreveport-Bossier this ringing endorsement: “I would never go back to Dallas.”

A pivotal aspect of the tourism industry in Shreveport-Bossier is the Boardwalk. If you’re like me, you’ve wondered why there are so few tenants on the Boardwalk and assumed that it must be because of astronomical rent. I thought it would be good to get some light shed on this mystery straight from the horses’ mouth, the Boardwalk’s General Manager, Ashley Warner. When asked if there was any truth to the public perception of rent being high on the Boardwalk, Ashley said, “A long time ago. I think that’s a common misconception for the Boardwalk now…when we first started, our original owners of the Boardwalk charged very high rent.” To be clear, that was in 2005. Ownership, however, has recently changed again: “We just got purchased in August of last year… our rents are an incentive right now.” So, if rent is not a problem, why the loss of retailers? “We lost about seven or eight…national retailers because of Covid.” So then if the shutdowns never happened, these retailers would still be here? “Oh, for sure…rents are not high now, that’s very important for the public to know.” So, the loss of these major retailers is not an indictment on the Boardwalk being an unsavory place to do business; they were just a consequence of the times, and they were certainly not alone in that.
It is time for recovery from the economic impacts of these shutdowns. Looking forward now, Ashley says, “I think that entertainment and restaurants are the future of a model like this because retail has gone so much online…My goal here is to get retail kind of in the center.” On the horizon for the Boardwalk is Chasing Aces, a golf-style venue similar to Top Golf where patrons can unleash their inner Happy Gilmore on some unsuspecting golf balls with a 30-bay driving range, and a 9-hole golf course in addition, being built on the 20-acre vacant side of Margaritaville. Construction will begin in July, and there will be accompanying restaurants built along with Chasing Aces. Ashley says, “I think this whole district in East Bank…will be a whole new concept down here.” When pressed on what one thing she would want the public to think when the Boardwalk comes to mind, Ashley says it is that, “The rent is not high…I just want people that haven’t been to the Boardwalk in a long time to come back.” The Boardwalk’s original purpose has not changed, either: “It was built for families.”
Tim Magner, the President of the Greater Shreveport Chamber of Commerce, is a member of the VSB Steering Committee and a well-traveled and well-read man. He has described the Shreveport-Bossier area as, “Cowboy Gumbo, blending the best of Texas, Arkansas, and Louisiana in our food, fashion, and festivals.” Tim thinks the 318 is in competition with a three-hour ring (think Tyler, Jefferson, and Nacogdoches even more narrowly) for tourism dollars, where “We have to be our own center of gravity...how do we differentiate ourselves in that sphere?” (“We’ll pull you in,” anybody?) As far as economic development, a key strategy in the Destination Master Plan: “Those of us in the economic development space are trying to figure out how we recruit people to come back who can either bring jobs with them or bring skills with them…or find ways to encourage the opportunities for kids to come back here after they’ve got a four-year degree.” If you’ve been wondering about the reason for Amazon’s delayed opening, “it’s because they’re putting millions of dollars’ worth of technology into it…it’s all automated…it will probably open the beginning of next year.”
Tim would not pin a mantra for the area down to one statement, but instead agreed with references in the VSB hype video (available on their website) concerning traits the area had to offer, such as, “A whole lot of this, a whole lot of that, a little bit of us,” and “Enough heart and soul for two cities.” A slightly sweeter analogy he had was, “The Hole in the Donut.” Watch out Texas.
Across the river, Lisa Johnson is the President and CEO of the Bossier Chamber of Commerce and the Cochair of the Steering Committee. Lisa’s favorite aspect of the Destination Master Plan was “Seeing two communities come together as one region.” This plan is audacious: it includes objectives (five), key opportunities (fifteen), and strategic goals (six). However, she thinks the unity between the two cities will be the catalyst to accomplish the plan: “When two cities come together as one region it is easier to create and agree upon the goals and objectives that were set. Now that we have come together as a region with like-minded goals, execution of these goals should be easy.” Lisa also cited the shutdowns over the Coronavirus as being a prime reason for losing tenants on the Boardwalk (not because it’s a hard place to do business!) over the last few years but also says it is on a resurgence and that retail popularity goes in cycles. Lisa also would not pin down a mantra to summarize the area, but instead agreed with the sentiments of other Steering Committee members: “We’ve been looking for that one thing for many, many years, but there’s a lot that’s good about us.” She does not see us in competition with New Orleans for tourism dollars or recognition of sorts and affirms something that outsiders from the state (and maybe some locals) don’t recognize: “We are a part of Louisiana.”

The community was involved in the procurement of the plan, and the community will be involved with the execution of the plan. The general consensus at VSB (whose primary mission is to increase the amount of visitor dollars coming into the region) is that what is good for residents is generally good for visitors, and vice versa. Some of the more exciting prospects detailed in the plan (which can help solve what one resident noted as downtown Shreveport’s “identity crisis” during the week) are a new state government building being built on Fannin Street, water taxis, a trolley system in downtown Shreveport that also connects to Bossier, the new Stageworks indoor sports facility in downtown Shreveport, increased police budgets as well as private security forces, developing the airport further, renewed tax incentives for the film industry, and addressing blight as job #1, even using local artists to help with that. One resident stated, “People know it’s better to collaborate, but emotionally they’re not always there.” Well, even without being emotionally there, we can be physically

there to support these projects, initiatives, and a direction we believe in. The prospect of an official Louisiana Music Museum to commemorate the area’s rich musical heritage dating back to Elvis Presley was met with unanimous support from all actors in the Destination Master Plan, including community residents. This will be a good attraction to the community that can go a long way towards giving the area a distinction from New Orleans, and vocalizing support every step of the way will help bring it to fruition.

Every dollar we give in support of our local community is an investment in the community, an investment that powersat-be notice from states away and affects what they decide to do or not do here. A critical point of understanding VSB wants to highlight is that “Increasing visitor dollars coming into the region contributes to the local tax base to help fund infrastructure improvements, community amenities, and public services, etc.” Our tourism industry expanding is also what creates more job opportunities that stay long after a tourist has left. Our economic and retail habits are noticed by prospective businesses from afar, but more than what prospective businesses perceive from afar about Shreveport-Bossier, an investment in the community is an investment in your children, and your children’s children. The long game is the game that matters most. As the VSB Destination Master Plan puts it, “…the success of each initiative is based entirely on how well local people from different communities in Shreveport-Bossier come together to co-create their collective future.” Just as what is good for residents is good for visitors, what is good for you is good for your children, and that is the ultimate master plan.

AEP FOUNDATION DONATES TO LOCAL FOOD BANKS
The AEP Foundation, at the recommendation of SWEPCO, donated $100,000 to help local communities affected by the June 16 supercell storm that caused catastrophic damage across the Ark-La-Tex.
Four regional food banks will share the gift: Food Bank of Northwest Louisiana, East Texas Food Bank, Harvest Texarkana, and Titus County Cares.
“We know our communities depend on us, and our crews worked tirelessly to rebuild our energy delivery system following this unannounced and unprecedented storm,” said Brett Mattison, SWEPCO President and COO. “We’re grateful to all our community partners for the important role they’ve played throughout this storm response and are hopeful this donation from the American Electric Power Foundation will offer help when it’s needed most.”
In addition to the monetary donation from the AEP Foundation, SWEPCO also donated four truckloads of food to the Food Bank of Northwest Louisiana, and another truckload to Longview Dream Center and Grace Creek Church in Longview, Texas after the week-long power restoration was complete.
FILM PRIZE PUBLIC WRAP PARTY TO CELEBRATE FILMMAKERS
The Louisiana Film Prize, one of the world’s most unique film competitions and festivals, which takes place primarily in Shreveport and Caddo Parish, celebrated the end of the Production Phase for its Film Prize 2023 competition year with an official Film Prize Wrap Party on
Tuesday, July 11th.
“Filmmaking is a craft that requires everything from writing, directing, acting to cinematography, lighting and graphic design, makeup, hair styling, costuming, sound recording, set construction, finance, and more. Everyone should be celebrated,” said Chris Lyon, Director of the Film Prize.
The Film Prize competition, which started in 2012, offers the world’s largest cash prize for a short film, $50,000, which has attracted filmmakers from not only the Northwest Louisiana area but also south Louisiana, Texas, Arkansas, and as far away as New York and Los Angeles. In 2022 it was named one of the best short film festivals in the world by MovieMaker Magazine. The Film Prize competition and festival have attracted over $20 million in economic activity to the region.
ROBINSON FILM CENTER ADDS OPEN CAPTION FILM SHOWINGS FOR HEARING-IMPAIRED PATRONS
Robinson Film Center will add select open caption screenings to some of its film runs, beginning this weekend. Open captions will assist hearing-impaired patrons in fully experience these films by providing written dialogue and scene descriptors onscreen.
Films with captions will be indicated on the RFC website and at the box office and will begin with screenings of Blackberry and Asteroid City. “At RFC we serve a wide range of patrons, and we try as much as possible to be aware of and accommodate their needs,” said Wendell Riley, Executive Director of RFC. “A number of our longterm supporters have expressed the need for captions, particularly within our senior community.”
As the center pilots this program, it will add captions to a few screenings a week, if they are available from the studios. “As we roll this out, we need to be mindful of accommodating those in need while not alienating members of the audience who would rather not watch a film with captions,” said Riley. “As a community hub, we need to find the right balance for our patron group. We will assess audience reactions in the coming months and adjust as needed.”

BOSSIER PARISH SCHOOL BOARD APPOINTS INTERIM DISTRICT 4 REPRESENTATIVE
In a special session the Bossier Parish School Board appointed Sherri Pool to serve as interim District 4 representative to replace Duane Deen, who recently resigned after moving out of the district. District 4 encompasses Plain Dealing and Benton.
Pool was selected from a field of five candidates that declared interest in the seat:
John T. Green
William Leighton
Peter “Andy” Modica
Robin R. Nichols
Sherri Pool
Pool, a retired Bossier Parish educator, was sworn in at the July 20, 2023 Bossier Parish School Board meeting and serves District 4 in an interim capacity. Because the unexpired portion of the term exceeds one year, the board also passed a resolution calling for a special election. Should she choose, Pool will be eligible to run for the permanent position in the primary election on October 14, 2023 and, if necessary, the general election on November 18, 2023.
LOCAL CANCER EXPERTS ATTEND INTERNATIONAL PROTON THERAPY MEETING

Lane R. Rosen, MD, medical director of radiation oncology at Willis-Knighton Cancer Center, and chief physicist Terry Wu, PhD, attended PTCOG 61, the largest proton therapy meeting in the world. It was held at The Quironsalud Proton Therapy Centre, the first proton center in Spain. The Particle Therapy Co-Operative Group (PTCOG) is a global nonprofit organization of scientists and professionals interested in particle therapy. Its mission is to promote the science, technology, and clinical application of particle therapy.
“Our attendance at this meeting helps maintain Willis-Knighton’s leadership position as early pioneers in scanning compact proton therapy,” Dr. Rosen says.
Willis-Knighton initiated this advanced technology in Shreveport in 2014, becoming only one of the 15 cancer centers in the United States offering proton therapy. Additionally, Willis-Knighton was the first site in the world to utilize Proteus ONE®, a smaller image-guided scanning proton system making this groundbreaking therapy accessible to patients of our region.
Proteus ONE®, from Belgian medical technology company IBA, has revolutionized the field of particle therapy. Willis-Knighton Cancer Center’s radiation oncology department is a national and international training site for newer proton centers that send staff to Shreveport to learn from the department’s lengthy clinical experience.
Dr. Rosen says, “Spain has now committed to purchasing nine Proteus ONE® units. It was great to see old friends at the meeting and see how the proton centers in Spain are thriving.”
MEXICAN Street Corn Grilled

Mexican street corn, also known as elote, is a popular dish in Mexico and has gained popularity in the United States over the years. It is a delicious and easy dish to make at home and is a great side dish for any backyard cookout. This recipe is sure to impress your guests with its decadent flavors. Give it a try and see for yourself!
INGREDIENTS
̗ 6 to 8 medium ears of sweet corn, husks removed
̗ 1/2 cup Mexican crema (can substitute with sour cream)
̗ 1/2 cup mayonnaise
̗ 1/2 cup chopped cilantro
̗ 1 clove garlic, minced
̗ 1/4 teaspoon ground chipotle pepper, or to taste
̗ 2 teaspoons finely grated lime zest, from 1 lime
̗ 2 tablespoons lime juice, from 1 lime
̗ 1/2 cup cotija cheese, crumbled (can substitute with grated Parmesan cheese)
̗ Lime wedges, to serve
INSTRUCTIONS
1. Heat a gas or charcoal grill to 400°F. Once the grill is hot, clean the grates.
2. Meanwhile, whisk together the crema, mayonnaise, cilantro, garlic, chipotle pepper, lime zest, and lime juice. Taste and season the mixture with salt if needed. (Crema has a little salt already, so add extra carefully.) Set sauce aside.
3. Grill the corn: Place the husked corn directly onto the grill grates. Grill the corn for about 3 minutes, undisturbed, or until kernels begin to turn golden brown and look charred. Turnover and repeat. When all sides are browned, remove from the grill onto a plate.
4. Top the corn with sauce and cheese: Using a brush or a spoon, coat each ear of corn with the crema mixture. Sprinkle with crumbled cojita cheese.
5. Sprinkle with additional chipotle pepper and cilantro, if desired. Serve immediately with extra lime wedges. Enjoy!
KEY LIME Mojitos Grilled
Elevate your classic mojito with a twist! Try caramelizing sugar-crusted key limes over high heat for a unique flavor. Com pared to traditional limes, key limes have a more sour and fragrant taste. Grilling them adds a smoky and sweet caramel touch to the cocktail. To garnish the mojitos, you can use a sprig of fresh mint and a grilled key lime slice on the rim of the glass. This adds a beautiful and flavorful touch to the presentation of the drink.
INGREDIENTS
̗ 8 key limes halved crosswise and seeded, or 4 regular limes, halved crosswise
̗ 1/2 cup sugar, plus extra as needed
̗ 12 sprigs mint, stripped, plus extra sprigs for garnish
̗ 1 cup white or dark rum
̗ 3 cups ice cubes
̗ 3 cups club soda
INSTRUCTIONS
1. Heat a grill to medium-high. Brush or scrape the grill grate clean and oil it well.
2. Spread the sugar in a shallow bowl. Dip the cut sides of the lime halves in the sugar and place the sugared side down on the grill grate.
3. Grill until the sugar is nicely caramelized , 2 to 3 minutes. Transfer the limes to a cutting board and let cool. Slice each lime half in half through the stem end.
4. Place the quartered limes and the mint leaves in a clear glass pitcher. Vigorously muddle the limes and mint with the end of a wooden spoon; the idea is to bruise the mint leaves and extract the juice from the limes.
5. Stir in the rum, followed by the ice cubes. Add the club soda. Stir again, then taste for sweetness. Add a tablespoon of sugar, if desired.
6. Serve chilled and garnish each cocktail with a mint sprig and lime slice. Enjoy!

Beloved Readers
Your SB Fashionista, Casey Craig, here! Love is in the air, and wedding season is upon us! The past few years have felt like a rollercoaster love affair with plenty of highs and lows. After a flood of postponements, cancellations, and precautions in 2020 and 2021, the rush to make up for lost time in 2022 brought the biggest boom of matrimonial ceremonies in almost 40 years! 2023 is slated to be the largest celebratory season yet. You’re probably even sorting through a stack of invitations right now which inevitably leads to the question of what to wear!
1. The Farmhouse Barn Wedding Ever-so-popular in the deep South are rustic nuptials with more cowboy boots than heels. Elevated comfort is the name of the game here, so slip on an easy-going dress with a polished finish. Try a classic neutral palette in muted hues of khaki, blues, and greens. Choose a lightweight fabric such as cotton, linen, or chambray that will keep you comfortable.

2. Big City Sophisticated Wedding When the occasion calls for chic city sophistication, gravitate toward stylish and structured outfits that feel sleek and modern without being too statement-making. A bold and architectural take on the LBD that is not for the faint-of-heart wallflower will stand out, but no one will accuse the wearer of upstaging the bride, either. A sleek low ponytail or French twist, clean and classic metallic jewelry, a nice timepiece, and a contemporary clutch will provide the polished finish you desire.

3. Beach Resort/Destination Wedding Chances are you’ve been invited to an exotic locale with a humid climate. Lightweight dresses, jumpsuits, and shorter hemlines are perfect for shoreside ceremonies. A tropical wedding is the perfect excuse to wear this season’s bright, bold colors. Magenta, aquamarine, and other neon hues will pop against the beachy backdrop. Mules, wedges, and other shoes with low, block heels will ensure you’re steady on the sand or in the grass.

4. White/Black Tie Wedding Event If the bride is in couture and the groom is in a tuxedo with tails, it’s your moment to go all out! No exceptions. When it comes to formal weddings the hemline of your dress should be floor-length, not showing the ankles, with an appropriate dress shoe and bag to match. If you're looking for something a little less feminine, a trendy, well-tailored pantsuit is a perfect alternative for wedding guests with a little edge.
5. Backyard Garden Party Wedding Celebrating a summerin-the-south wedding in a beautiful outdoor setting can be an unforgettable experience, especially in the wrong
3

outfit. In the sweltering summer heat, be sure to keep cool and comfortable in the perfect garden party frock by selecting midi length dress in a neutral or light color palette in a flowy, light, loose-fitting fabric such as cotton or chiffon with a flattering fit that gives classic, fresh, fashion-forward

6. Semi-spontaneous elopement to Vegas Prepare to say cheers to the new couple in a fun cocktail dress that makes a glamorous statement. Metallic finishes are on trend and rich, vibrant colors always work well for those memorable moments of spontaneous splendor. Lean into the feel of elegant whimsy with a smoothed low ponytail, strappy stilettos, a clutch, and shoulder-skimming earrings.

7. Traditional Church Wedding A church wedding almost always calls for modesty and simplicity, usually meaning a more conservative look in a floor-length, tea length, knee length, or midi dress. If the classics are preferred, choose a feminine floral piece as an easy, polished go-to design. If you desire a touch of modernization, look to a style that features a more contemporary print as an extra restatement of a formal classic.

UNITED, WE CAN MAKE LIFE BETTER FOR EVERYONE IN NORTHWEST LOUISIANA
LOOKING TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE HERE IN NORTHWEST LOUISIANA? SO ARE WE. UNITED WAY OF NORTHWEST LOUISIANA WORKS DAILY TO UNITE PEOPLE TO MAKE LIFE BETTER FOR EVERY PERSON IN OUR COMMUNITY.

Our focus is health, education, financial stability, and essential needs. Here in Northwest Louisiana, one of our fundamental challenges is economic sustainability. The strength of the Louisiana economy is inextricably tied to the financial stability of all residents - another obstacle our community faces.
According to the latest ALICE report released this year, in Northwest Louisiana, 56 percent of households are considered ALICE (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed) and poverty households.
We see ALICE every day – hard workers who keep Louisiana’s economy moving but aren’t sure they can put food on their tables. They are waiters, childcare workers, teachers, police officers, home health aides, friends, and family.
When ALICE families have more resources, they can afford healthcare, savings, education, and essential items, and in return, our community will see more economic activity, higher tax revenue, and more. As long as there is an ALICE population, United Way will continue to work hard to provide families with the resources they need to prosper.
But we don’t do it alone. The Northwest Louisiana community is standing with us. Do-gooders like you are living their purpose through United Way by giving, volunteering, or speaking out for policies to improve our community. Every year, we change more than 100,000 lives annually through the support of loyal community partners like Coca-Cola Bottling Company United, International Paper, and Raymond James, the development of exciting new partnerships like Williams Companies and OMNI Specialty Packaging, and the combined giving power of more than 200 partner companies.
We only succeed when we collaborate and become United in Purpose with people like you who care about Northwest Louisiana and collaborate with others to advance programs that meet urgent needs today while building strength for tomorrow.
If you would like to live more purposefully today, please visit unitedwaynwla.org or contact Jennifer Terrell at jterrell@ unitedwaynwla.org to learn more about our United Way Workplace Campaigns.
LIFE IS

For life’s moments, big and small. We’re here with the strength of the cross, the protection of the shield. The Right Card. The Right Care.

How To How To

Ah, August. The dog days of summer. The time of year when the sun is beating down mercilessly, and the sweat is pouring off our foreheads. And yet, for some reason, we decided to plant a garden. What were we thinking?
Keeping a garden alive in the hot summer months can be a challenge.

First things first: water, water, water. Your plants are going to need it more than ever during this time of year. But don't just water them willy-nilly. Be strategic about it. Water early in the morning or late in the evening to avoid evaporation. And make sure you're getting the water down to the roots, where it's needed most. This isn't a sprinkler party, people.
Secondly, shade is your friend. If you can provide some relief from the scorching sun, your plants will thank you. Consider investing in some shade cloth or constructing a temporary structure to provide some respite from the heat. And while you're at it, why not create a little shady oasis for yourself? You deserve it.
Thirdly, mulch is magic. Not only does it help to retain moisture in the soil, but it also acts as a barrier against the blazing sun. Plus, it looks pretty darn good. Don't be afraid to get creative with your mulch choices. Try pine needles, shredded leaves, or even rocks. Just don't use your neighbor's cat, no matter how tempting it may be.
Now, let's talk about the plants themselves. When it comes to August gardening, you're going to want to focus on the tough guys. The ones that can take the heat and keep on

truckin'. Consider planting some drought-resistant varieties, like succulents or cacti. Or, if you're feeling particularly daring, try your hand at growing some hot peppers. They love the heat and will add some spice to your life (and your meals).
And finally, don't forget to take care of yourself. Gardening can be a sweaty, exhausting endeavor, especially in the August heat. Make sure you're staying hydrated and taking breaks when you need them. And if all else fails, just grab a cold beverage, and admire your handiwork from the comfort of your air-conditioned living room. You deserve it.

Summer 'Last'
Remember the last summer you were a kid?
I’m talking about a bona fide, documents-on-the-wall, true blue kid, a kid with a bicycle and a dog but no driver’s license and no “real” job, and not much sense.
THAT summer. The one before confusion and hormones kicked in, before your heroes disappointed you, before you learned your parents weren’t perfect and the world wasn’t either.
It was that summer before high school when your calling card was the joy of being young and irresponsible, when ice cream melting, a flat tire on your Schwinn, and a crack in your baseball bat were your biggest problems. Other than having to be home at 6 for supper, your schedule was as open as the day’s possibilities.
How did you spend your “last” summer? And when was it?
If you’re Don Reid, that summer was The Summer of 1959, and he tells you all about it and much more in “Piano Days,” his 11th book published since his retirement from the music industry in 2002.
If the author’s name sounds familiar, it’s because he was the lead singer for The Statler Brothers, one of the most awarded acts in the history of country music. If you know the name “Don Reid” like you know your friends’ names, then you are basically me or like me — an authentic, genuine, certified Statlers nut.
Just thinking about The Statlers and their producer,
Shreveport’s Jerry Kennedy, makes me feel good. I see those names and immediately hear music, the kind that won more awards than you can shake a dobro at.
Don has quit singing now except for Sunday mornings at Mt. Olivet Presbyterian, his church since boyhood in Staunton, Virginia. A prolific songwriter, he has not, thank the Lord, quit writing.
Published by Mercer University Press in Macon, Georgia, “Piano Days” is a novel featuring three boys growing up in a small town in the late 1950s and early 1960s. They ride 26-inchers with chrome handlebars, frequent the Burger Barn, visit a fortune teller and football games, grab a book out of a locker for World Geography class, call girls and then hang up before the final number has been dialed, and sometimes timidly and sometimes bravely go on actual dates.
Sound familiar?
There’s Toby and Billy, Sue Jane and the two Tinas, Lannie Mae and Main Street, and the National Guard Armory and the ol’ green and white, the school colors. These are teens who learn to dance (sort of). They endure a principal who is half Joe Friday and half Edgar G. Robinson. Somebody drops a jar in science lab, the one with the snake in formaldehyde. They ask Daddy for the keys and go to the drive-in.
Your memories and mine, simple and sweet.
It’s a time, Don writes – more appropriately, the book’s main narrator writes - that he looks back on “with a tenderness and a sadness that makes me smile.” Those times include that summer of 1959 when they were just boys, imperfect, but having fun. Their last biking summer, their “last summer for being kids and doing kid things and not being ashamed of them,” he writes. “The last summer for exploring the mysteries of life without having to solve them.”
“Maybe it’s the last one I can look back on with absolutely no regrets — except that it is gone forever, taking the people and the time with it, and leaving only my sentimental memory as a witness that it was ever there at all.”
So it’s been for us all, once upon a beautiful time …
“Piano Days” is a love letter to a special place and time, one long Statler Brothers song. But it also offers you a mirror to consider how that summer and the precious ones around it come back to you years later in ways you could not have known or even imagined then.
You can read “Piano Days” or listen to it or, like me, do both. The audiobook is read by Don, so it’s like he’s next to you, telling you about church softball and the county fair and the Christmas parade and all the other things he — and we — did as kids when we were imperfect and youthfully irresponsible, blissfully ignorant, and having fun.
There’s a last time for everything, even barefoot summers. So, allow yourself some time to remember and daydream. It feels good to be a kid again. Contact Teddy at teddy@latech.edu or Twitter @ MamaLuvsManning
