Western Wood Design Center
A unique, full-time "design center" for the design, construction and photographing of a continual flow of new design ideas using western woods in all available species and products has been established in Portland. It is a joint venture of the W'estern Wood Products Association, Western Red Cedar Lumber Association, and Western Wood Moulding Producers, according to D. Donald Lonie, Jr., whose Lonie Company handles various phases of product publicity {or each of the three associations.

Believed to be the first full-time design center for the creation of new end uses for wood ever established in the country, the new venture will be known as the Western W.ood Design Center.
The wood design center will operate under the direction of Lonie and will employ a full-time shop and superintendent. The center will utilize the talents and furnishings of Design Center, Inc., a Beaverton, Oregon home furnishings firm, to help plan and accessorize some of the sets.
Among the kinds of end uses of western wood products which will be constructed and photographed during 7966, arc outdoor decks, storage structures, fences, outdoor entertainment centers, basement remodelings, attic remodelings, new paneling designs, rcom dividers, childrens' bedroom additions, built-ins, western red cedar siding applications, use of mouldings in design and decoration, and many others.
Four Join NAWIA
Four firms have become new members of the National'American Wholesale Lumber Association, according to J. J. Mulrooney, bringing the total number of NAWLA members to 347.
New regular members are the Fleishel Lumber Company, St. Louis, Missouri, and Blessing Lumber Company, Seattle, Washington.
Accepted as associate members were Brooks-Scanlon, Inc., Bend, Oregon, and Lulay Bros. Lumber Company, Scio, Oregon.
The National-American membership now stands at a total figure 14 higher than the same time a year ago, Mulrooney states.
NAWLA members market nearlv 50Va of all lumber sold in the United States.
Christmos Tree Monogemenl
California forest land owners, by managing their young natural stands of firs and pines, could supply all of the Christmas trees sold in the state each year.
They have a big potential market. California is now growing about 900,000 Christmas trees a year but buying another three million trees from other states.
That is the message to land owners in a new publication of the University of California Agricultural Extension Service, o'Manag' ing and Marketing California Forest-Grown Christmas Trees." The 20-page booklet, illustrated with photographs of natural Christmas tree stands and drawings shows methods and tools of tree management and is designed to help land owners make the most of their land.
Wood Kitchen Cobinets: The Chomp
A major steel producer has decided to quit the manufacture of steel kitchen cabinets, because of declining markets and increased production costs. Republic Steel Corp. has announced their kitchen cabinet production will cease January 1.
Since the early postwar period, wood kitchen cabinets have gained a virtual monopoly in new home construction. Recent surveys estimate wood's share of the kitchen cabinet market to be upwards of 80 percent.
NAWTA Regionol Meetings Plcrnned
A series of regional meetings, designed to provide a common forum for the discussion of mutual industry distribution problems and to seek solutions for them, have been scheduled by NationalAmerican Wholesale Lumber Association.
Local chairmen have been appointed for each of the sessions, with instructions to develop programs of interest to lumber distributors in their immediate areas.
'oWe feel that the best way to understand wholesalers' problems is to become deeply involved at the grass-roots level," said NAWLA President Bruce Harris.

New Commodity Stqndqrds Chief
Donald R. Mackay has been selected to head the Office of Commodity Standards for the Bureau of Standards. He will be responsible for ,the development of the voluntary standards progrnm involving such products as building materials, lumber and wood products, plastics, rubber and textiles, plumbing materials and fixtures, containers and packaging, and tools. The Office of Commodity Standards cooperates with industry groups in developing stahdards, which, when approved, are published by the Department of Commerce.
Prior to his assienment to the Office of Commoditv Standards" Mackay worked aJ an engineer for the Office of Weights and Measures.
Free Redwood Guide
A free guide to year-round recreation on 260,000 acres of private timber lands in three northwestern California counties has been issued by California Redwood Association, 617 Montgomery St., San Francisco.
"Redwood Industry Recreation Areas" is an illustrated leaflet describing 22 units open to the public without charge. The areas extend from the Smith River, near the Oregon border, to the Navarro River in southern Mendocino County. Five and a half miles of ocean beach are included.
