NAWTA Urges Joint Acfion

The president of National-American Wholesale Lumber Association has called upon all levels of the lumber industry to unite in what he refers to as o'the kind of cooperative efiort necessary if we are to remain in the housing market." Bruce F. Harris, Pittsburgh wholesaler and NAWLA president, says oothe facts indicate- the urgency- of a crisis we are facing in marketing lumber products, and we'd better realize that we are going to hive to do something about it."

"Only 17 percent of the consumer disposable income is spent on housing, _a figure which is decreasing steadily. The building materials industry is not in tune with what the people want, anJ there is little feed-back of information from the retail level through the wholesalers to the manufacturer in the lumber industry. There is no question as to the demand in our own country for housing units in the future, only a question of what form thesl new units will take," Harris says.

Harris states that his associaiion is asking manufacturers, associations and individual firms to include wholesalers in their annual meetings, marketing conferences, and at discussions where sales plans are made.

Government Kills Wolnut Controls

_ Stunned by Commerce Secretary John T. Connor,s third and latest refusal this year to reimpose export controls on black warnut logs, the American Walnut Manufacturers, Association has vowed not to give up the fight. At press time manufacturers were asking Congress to add the export controls they sought from the Commerce department.

In announcing his latest decision, Connor conceded. in effect. that in-10 or ll-years the U.S. may run out of veneer grade walnut logs. But he insisted that export controls would do little to stem the tide, that more elements of the American economy would be hurt than helped by such action, and that the only eifective way to stretch supplies would be to slap restrictions on domestic use, a move requiring congressional action.

We 6re not giving up the fight," the AWMA,s Donald H. Gotr said.
