The Horror of Gancer

Additional information has come to light that seems to indicate that workers exposed for long periods of time to wood dust in factories show an unusually high incidence of cancer. It is not the first time such studies have pointed to wood dust as a possible carcinogen. Several years ago American studies began tracking selected indicators to see if the theory was correct. Final findings have yet to be announced on that one.

The newest indication is a study from England among furniture workers that purports to indicate that they had developed a high rate of cancers involving the sinuses and the nose cavity.

Our feelings are several: sympathy for the workers, who if nothing else, are getting the hell scared out of them; frustration at yet another serious situation that is marked by so little information; anger that the government is doing so little so late; and, frankly, dismay that industry, which should have known better years ago, sat on its hands for so long and will now likely come out the villain if the studies orove what evervone expects.

OSHA is finally investigating the hazards of wood dust. A National Institute of Occupational Safety & Health study at Stanford University begins month after next and seeks to discover in ten months if a reasonable danger exists in the workplace. Incredibly, the Occupational Safety and Health Agency has no present regulations that can legally control the amount of wood dust and related pollution that an employer can allow in his factory or shop.

You'll recall that this is the same OSHA that has been driving the retailer and wholesaler bananas with its nitpicking regulations regarding such major industry problems as couches in the ladies' room. Somehow, the possibility of a cancer causing agent in the shop or factory has been too trifling for them to consider.

Government and industry, even now, are not attacking the problem with the vigor and sense of urgency that the horror of cancer deserves. An all-out, task force unit should be formed, turned loose and given orders to find the realities. Anything less is inadequate.

Another record breaker

HE "World Series of Values" held recently by the Palmer G. Co. was a customer buying that was a record breaker in every category, according to president Robert D. Peterson.

Lewis show

Over 1,100 customers, suppliers, PGLers and guests coming from the Pacific Coast, Alaska and even one gentleman from Australia, attended the mammoth "ball game" staged at the company's distribution center in Auburn, Wa.

A total of 2,068 orders were written amounting to over $1.5 million in sales, 55 major suppliers exhibited products in the display area of the converted warehouse.

Over 150 PGL people participated in the one day show representing sales personnel from all l0 branches and three Pacific Yard Service Oregon warehouses. Four managers

Why plywood prices are up

/lN eNnlYSlS of causes for rising ll plywood prices by the American Plywood Association places primary responsibility on policies of the federal government that have created an unnecessary shortage of timber during a period of unprecedented demand for wood products.

The 12-p. APA study, "In Perspective, An Analysis of Plywood and Other Housing Cost Factors, 1970 77," was prepared in response to mounting national concern over increasing costs for all components of a new home."

According to the U.S. Department

of Commerce, the average cost of a new home nationwide during the second quarter of 1977 was $54,700 - an increase of $6,900 from one year earlier and a 54% increase since 1973.

During that l2-month period, the cost of plywood has added about $150 to the $6,900 increase in the price of a new home.

The study points out that cost increases have occurred in all phases of plywood production. Since the beginning of the decade, for example, power and fuel costs have skyrocketed ( Please turn to page I 5 1

Wood product supply problems

Wl,H:'?,1'*1*1 :J ';l 8:fr :1 were nevertheless voicing concern at the recent Western Wood Products Association Fall meeting over raw material supply and a consensus that production, shipments and housing starts will be off next year.

WWPA president A. M. Whiting, who is also president of Kaibab Industries, Phoenix. Az.. told the members that ''In spite of a good year for lumber shipments related to the strong housing market, scarceness of timber has caused some permanent mill closures."

He said in the upper Willamette Valley in Oregon, a half dozen mills

have closed their doors for good, citing the lack of federal timber as a primary cause. "We simply must find a better way of funding reforestation and intensive management of our national forests where more than 55%

of all standing sawtimber in the West is now growing," said Whiting.

"One of the real tragedies," said Whiting, "is that the Forest Service estimates more than 15 billion board feet of national forest sawtimber are destroyed each year by rot, bugs, disease, fires and wind. That is more than the annual harvest from those lands. Recovery of only 20% would provide enough lumber to build 1.5 million homes."

WWPA exec. v.p. H. A. "Bob" Roberts predicted at the San Diego, Ca., meeting, held at the Sheraton Harbor Island Inn, that ''Home building will surely reach 1.8 million con-

WWPA FALL MEETING

ventional starts. Of these, an exceptionally large number, 1.3 - 1.4 million, will be single-family units."

Roberts also forecast a 5% increase in 1977 Western softwood lumber shipments over 1976 to total some 18.9 billion board feet atyear end. He attributed the increase to the large number of single-famtly starts (75% of all 1977 starts).

Total softwood lumber consumption in the U. S., which reached 36.4 billion board feet in '1976, is expected to increase 9% to 39.7 billion board feet in 1977 and drop off slightly to 37.6 billion board feet in 1978. WWPA expects the 15.3 billion board feet in total will be used for residential construction in 1978 and that single-family units will be 7O% of the total residential mix in the U.S.

The Wood Moulding & Millwork Producers Association, working with WWPA during the meeting, obtained some new grading rules for moulding stock.

This new change will now mean that some lumber previously graded as moulding will be put primarily into shop grades. Based on a grade recovery study presented at the meeting, there should be approximately a 12 to 14% increase in shop available on the market depending on the region from which it is purchased. The greatest increase will be seen in 2 shoo and the least in 3 clear.

Another grade rule change of less significance was also made. Under No. 3 shop there is a paragraph dealing with "ordinary yard common" lumber. It was felt that this reference is meaningless in today's market and has been deleted from the rules. Thus, if any piece of lumber contains the required number of cuttings for the grade of No. 3 shop, it will be permitted regardless of its overall appearance.

Congressman James P. Johnson (R{olo). spoke on the continuing wood supply problems created by the continuing withdrawl of public and even private land that produces timber.

Discussing RARE II (the Roadless Area Review and Evaluation) a federal effort to quantify, classify, and desig-

nate lands as to wilderness, multiple use, etc., he said that he believed "that all areas that have wilderness potential should be examined. This should be done efficiently, individually, and speedily as possible - but not rushed without adequate study and hearing. Those who say no more wilderness, as well as those who say put every acre we can into wilderness, have got to recognize there is a reasonable middle ground, and there is legiti mate objection to closed minds.

"Secondly, the wishes of the local people should be heard and given priority. It is true that the public lands belong to all the people, but determination of its use should not be left to those who live hundreds and even thousands of miles away just because they are greater in number.

"I have a third reflection about RARE II. I am opposed to the locking up - to the stopping of development - in these 67 million acres of land for the length of time this study may take.

"I prefer to judge individual areas on their merits. If RARE II is to continue over an extended period of time, I would favor lifting the lid so that the Forest Service could continue multiple use management in those areas where reasonable minds can agree such use is the best use. I wonder how many timber sales or ski area developments have been suspended, not because of serious conflicts in use, but simply because they got caught in the new, expanded roadless area."

The marketing committee meeting heard an illustrated talk by a North Carolina builder who believes more than half of American home energy is wasted. R. B. Fitch, Jr., who heads Fitch Creations, Inc., Carboro, N.C., said his firm designs and builds thermally efficient structures to keep the inside temperature unaffected by the cold or heat outside.

Fitch said. ''Studies have shown the majority of all energy used in the home typically goes for heating and cooling. The primary loss of home heat is through leakage. For this reason, we are very careful to seal any area where heat could escape." Fitch advocates careful caulking around windows, doors and wall panels. "Heat loss through the walls," he said, "accounts for 25% of heating requirements and we wrap each unit completly in two layers of insulation."

He said the hot water heater is the second largest consumer of home energy and he recommends resetting

WHY PLYWOOD IS UP (Continued

from page 11 )

234%, glue costs are up 143% and labor costs have nearly doubled.

But the major reason for rising plywood and lumber prices is the federal government's policy of needlessly withholding timber from harvest. At the same time, the national boom in home building has created the strongest demand for wood products in history, according to the cost study.

Federal policies that downgrade the utilization of publically-owned timber have shot the price up from $91 per thousand board feet just five years ago to an average of $232 per thousand during the first half of 1971. America's national forests, not national parks or wilderness areas where timber harvesting is prohibited, contain 52% of the country's sawtimber inventory, yet they furnish less than one-fourth of the timber harvested.

Earlier this year, Congress approved a supplemental sales program that would have allowed the U.S. Forest Service to sell an additional 720 mtllion board feet of timber during 1977 and help ease the timber shortage. However, APA reports current progess indicates this program will fall short by 500 million feet.

Since the beginning of the year, three plywood mills have been forced to close because of the artificial shortage of timber, even though demand for the product has never been greater. Combined. these three mills could have produced enough plywood this year to construct 45,000 homespossibly enough to overcome the production shortage, according to the plywood association.

the factory water heater level of 160 degrees to 120 degrees. Lighting is the third largest consumer of energy. Interiors of Fitch homes are painted antique white and ample use is made of skylights and clerestory windows to maximize benefits of natural lighting.

Perhaps the most important part of Fitch's success is that he practices what he preaches and spreads the gospel to the people who buy his homes.

I ing that sideloaders are limited to -narrow aisle applications, allowing 40' or longer material to be stored in areas with access aisl'es'of only from 8'- 12'wide.

But sideloaders have a lot more to offer than just the ability to handle long loads in narrow aisles. Sideloaders can contribute to significant cost savings in several areas when the loads to be handled are longer than a standard pallet.

Managers can afford to ribbon stack long loads instead of traditional block stacking. Ribbon stacking means there is an aisle adjacent to every load space, providing immediate access to each space. This means no time wasted shuffling material around to get desired loads.

The cost savings? Less manpower required for a given amount of material throughput; or alternatively, more material moved with a given amount of manpower.

Some users are refining this even further by providing access to each load space and each load by means of canti-lever racks.

Mobile cranes are used to obtain load selectivity in storage areas. However, mobile cranes require two or three men for effective operation. Because their loads dangle from the cables, cranes must move slowly to avoid product damage or employe injury.

A sideloader, on the other hand, is operated by one man who both picks up loads and drives. And with its load securely sitting on a sideloader's deck, the vehicle can travel almost at road speeds.

The cost benefit is less manpower and faster operation.

A further cost saving evolving from ribbon stacking is a user's improved ability to rotate stock. Specificially, load shuffling for FIFO rotation is avoided as there is immedi ate access to each load space. Quick and simple stock rotation can be scheduled easily, helping to avoid stock obsolescence.

Whenever long loads must be brought from outdoor storage to indoor production areas, double handling and time consuming equipment interfaces may result.

Story at a Glance

Properly used a sideloader can save alot more than space in material handling jobs cost savings, benef its of ribbon stacking, long loads factors to consider for maximum machine benefits.

Few plant doors are wide enough for a standard forklift with a 20-ft or longer load. Usually long loads are pulled from storage by a crane or lift truck, placed on a flatbed or

dollies, or picked up by a straddle carrier and carried indoors. Here the load is dropped, ready to be taken to a production area by overhead crane or forklift. The effect is costly double or triple handling.

A sideloader on the other hand, can retrieve long material from a ribbon storage area and carry it through relatively narrow plant doors and, in most cases, move it directly to production equipment.

The benefit is less manpower required, less mobile equipment to buy and maintain, and less chance of lost production time because material is waiting to be moved.

Carrying loads on long, relatively stable truck decks is a much more stable way of load handling than balancing loads precariously on lift truck forks or dangling them from mobile cranes. Some users have found loads on sideloaders to be so stable

Windows can save energy

While some "experts" have been advising builders that the way to conserve energy in homes is to reduce the number and size of windows, the Federal Energy Administration contends that houses with large windows can actually be energy savers.

In a booklet "Energy Conservation With l,lindows, " prepared by the FEA with the assistance of the National Bureau of Standards, it states, "A window, unlike a wall, can transmit sunlight into a room, then trap its heat. In many instances this solar heat gain can exceed the window's total conductive heat loss for the day. Thus, the window can actually provide heat in the winter."

Windows in any building should be selected and positioned with energy benefits in mind. The FEA booklet points out that windows on

the southern exposure of a house get the most sun, so the largest window areas should face south. Windows facing east and west enjoy the sun's rays only part of the day. The side of the house facing North gets little or no sun and should have the smallest window area.

Windows should be double-glazed and should reduce air infiltration to a minimum in order to achieve best fuel conservation results.

"Cold air leaking through cracks in a well-insulated house can account lor 3Wo of the load of the heating system. This figure can be reduced by as much as 50% by making windows and doors tighter," according to FEA.

Quality windows with double-pane insulating glass provide the same insulating benefits as tight-fitting storm sash over single-glazed windows.

Window manufacturers have developed new and more efficient weatherstripping systems. When applied in the factory under stringent quality control conditions, the new weatherstripping results in windows that will greatly reduce the amount of heat loss through air infiltration in comparison with loose-fitting windows, new or old.

I UfrAnen and building material

Ldealers are members of a unioue industry. We are victims of customer complaints and over regulation by state and federal governments which in most cases leads to customer complaints.

We stand idly by and accept the complaints and over regulations. Oh sure, we gripe to each other and a few of us even take a few minutes to write or phone our representatives concerning pending legislation that may create additional monumental problems, but we still just sit by and hope. We seem to be a very passive group, reluctant to raise our voices. I/.iclY?

The Little Ole Ladies in sneakers have managed to out play us in every match. They have tied up the forests, the land, the air and the water while we have only griped about building moritoria, high lumber prices, shortages of materials and coastal initiatives.

Since it is extremely difficult to get you to actively participate in preventing your political and regulatory demise we have formed the Building Material Industry Political Action Committee, in coordination with the Lumber Association of Southern California and several credit reporting agencies which are members of the Western Building Material Dealers Association (A lobbying arm of our industry in Sacramento). The purpose of the political action committee is to extend our appreciation through contributions to those legislators in sympathy with our industry and to assist in persuading other legislators to join in our cause. If we are going to make contributions we must receive contributions from members of our industry.

We have mailed a request for funds to each of the California dealers. A few of you have contributed but it is a long way from the small goal of $15,000 we have established for LMA. The farmer workers. teachers. dock workers, etc., can contribute millions for legislative purposes. We sit here in the midst of regulations smothering us and can't get a pitiful $15,000 together. It isno wonder that we end up on the loosing end. I guess we deserve it.

We have asked dealers to contribute a very modest $100 per million of gross sales. Where is it? Are you so naive and sheltered from the attacks against the industry that you can't see what is happening? Maybe youlhave failed to comply with the many regulations issued that will provide you with a citation, fine or jail sentence if caught. Or, maybe you feel you are too busy to read the bulletins published on these regulations.

Our attempt is to bring to a halt this increasing flow of administration and regulations. We urgently need your assistance. If I seem to be rough on you please excuse me and accept my comments in the light that we are attempting to motivate you into realizing that the industry is undergoing rapid and drastic changes that hurt.

The only way we can protect our industry is through a joint effort of all. If the Little Ole Ladies in sneakers can do it, we certainly have the ability and the need to protect ourselves.

After the second very successful year there must be enough left in your budget to contribute to the political action committee. I fully expect every dealer to support the industry which provides him with his livelihood. Send your checks for your fair share to BMI/PAC, 1055 Lincoln Ave., San Jose, Ca.95125.

We've just moved our entire staff into our beautiful new distribution yard in Orange, California.

Our specialty remains selling lumber yards and home improvement centers on an LCL basis. Douglas fir, pine and redwood.

A T Western's 1977 Showcase of l{Building Products, Nov. l2- l5 in Portland, about 100 firms will show and sell Western dealers a greater variety of products than we have shown in the past several years.

Many exhibitors will offer "money saving" specials, others will feature new products and ideas. It's a show you will want your buyers and sales people to see, in fact, we hope to see all of your people there. You are urged to register now for an informative and fun-filled convention.

Remind your customers to keep sales receipts for energy-saving devices and products they buy. They will want to refer to them at tax time next year. The government has not published the listing of materials which will qualify, but you can anticipate the inclusion of items such as storm doors and windows, clock thermostats, insulation, caulking and weather stripping.

Manufacturers of a wide variety of other products are campaigning to get their pet items on the list, so don't regard the categories mentioned above as being all-inclusive. The new energy legislation proposes that tax breaks will apply on energy saving products purchased after April 21,1977.

OUN[AIN $il4[E$

/l rrENonNCE was way up at flour 84th Annual Mountain States Lumber Dealers Convention. 468 people registered. This is more than a 50% increase over the past several years. Again, thanks to Howard and Bobbie Anderson whose intense interest and work in planning the convention really paid off.

It was such a success that the board of directors have decided to have the 1978 convention in Denver again, exact time and location to be decided later.

Hieruight speech of the convention was by John Walker of Lowe's Com. panies, Inc. He really laid it on the line. Even though he is a large lumber dealer (doing $2.6 million per day) he related and communicated with every lumber dealer in the audience. He has had every problem they have

ever had and then some, many times. He has developed a tremendous bank of experience in profitable management of a retail lumber business. All who heard him appreciate his willingness to come and share his ideas with us. Copies of his speech will be available from the association, office.

New president of the association is Mike Lehan of Weld County Lumber Co., P.O. Box 218, La Salle, Co. 80645.

Vice-presidents were elected as follows:

. Utah: Leonard Treft, Nu-Way Builders Supply Co., Sdt Lake City.

. Wyoming: Jerry Tracy, Jackson Lumber, Jackson.

. New Mexico: Jerry Woodward, Woodward Lumber Co., Las Cruces.

Idaho: K. D. Ker. Max Ker & Son Lumber Co.. Idaho Falls.

New members of the board of directors elected by the membership to serve three year terms are as follows:

Utah: Joe Poitevin, Anderson Lumber Co., Ogden; Idaho: K. D. Ker, Max Ker & Son Lumber Co., Idaho Falls; Wyoming: Vern Russell, Russell Lumber Co., Douglas; Wyoming: Jerry Tracy, Jackson Lumber, Jackson. Vern Thompson, Gittings Lumber Co., Denver, was elected to serye one year on the board to complete the unfulfilled three year term of Lee Richardson who resigned from the board because he is no longer active in the lumber business since Richardson Lumber Co. was sold. Lee received a plaque in recognition of his fine service on the board along with retiring board members Howard Anderson, Bill Pengelly, and Ted Johnson.

The board appointed the following individuals to represent Mountain States on the board of directors of the National Lumber and Building Material Dealers Association: Keith Ker, Max Ker & Son Lumber Co., Idaho Falls, Idaho; Joe Harley (alternate), Baldridge Lumber Co., Albuquerque, New Mexico; and yours truly.

It goes back more than a century, to the building of the first transcontinental

railroad and our role in the development of the WesL

But we've never believed that just being on the right track is enough, for if you only sit there you'll get left behind.

That's why we spend more each year than it cost to build our railroad in the 1860's just to maintain and improve our trackage. And over half a billion dollars in the past five years for new equipment.

Which adds up to the most modern freight car fleet going, and one of the largest in the world, highballed by the most powerful diesels to meet today's fast moving marketing needs.

Our track record isn't just one for the books. W"'r" out to set new ones! k can handle it.

Home improvement marketing help

f HERE is marketing help for

I everyong w.ifh a.stake in home improvement by identifying and using applicable promotion materials in this cooperative industry promotion and public relations program. There are tie-in elements for dealers, home centers, contractors, financial institutions, hardware dealers and utilities.

The growing home remodeling phenomenon can be the road to continuing volume growth if home improvement merchandising programs are on target. For many retailers, the national "Home Improvement Time" promotion can be an important cornerstone in these merchandising activities. Organized in 1966 by a group of building products manufacturers, trade associations. trade publications

and consumer shelter press, "HIT" is an industry-wide promotion effort that offers as complete a selection of merchandising tools as are available anywhere in the industry.

"HIT" is a year-around program that hits its hardest during those spring and fall key buying months. Making it part of your merchandising program can help make the most out of the boom in home improvement consumer spending. Spring-Summer theme is "It's Home Improvement Time"; FallWinter theme, "Energy Management is a Family Affair - Improve Your Home."

The program is unique among building products promotions. The trade press support and consumer publication editorial coverage of the

The Merchant Magazine

promotion alone can be translated into millions of dollars of valuable exposure.

It is also backed by two different 24-p. newspaper publicity supplements distributed to over 10,000 newspapers coast to coast.

A few things the promotion offers:

I A 4-color, l6-p. brochure full of remodeling and energy saving ideas for your customers. Space is avail- | able for dealer identification and selling message. A selection of free samples and literature from nearly 45 of the major product sponsors of the promotion are included in a sales portfolio and a merchandising file cabinet. i-

! An oportunity to tie-in with the promotion through a wide range I of point-of-sale materials. A selection of consumer oriented films that illustrate d-i-y home improve- ment techniques plus a visual selling center for conducting consumer clinics and point of sale selling.

To organize your "HIT" tie-in the best bet is start at the top. Write or call: James Stewart, administrator, "Home Improvement Time," P.O. Box 102, Carnegie, Pa., 15106, (412) 923-1560. MERCY KILLING OF OLD TREES

"How would you like to be eaten alive by bugs? Support mercy killing of old trees! A noble giant of the forest, ruler of his domain for several hundred years deserves a more honorable death than to be eaten alive by insects!

"And you sawmills can go a step further and give these proud trees a dignified memorial service by selling the clear lumber to us. We will make mouldings and door jambs from the lumber which will be sent to the Deep South where they love to apply a natural finish rather than hide the beauty of the grain with (ugh) paint.

"Really now, does a 300 year old tree deserve to be converted to plywood and be covered by a rug and walked on? Or be covered with vinyl and be put on a wall, made to look like ash or fruity pecan?

"We will treat your trees with the reverence and respect that they deserve. "

Contact your distributors for those products whose producen sponsor "HIT." Ask for their free literature and other promotional materials. Plan your store-wide promotional program, based on the "HIT" theme, "It's Home Improvement Time Inside Outside . . All Around The House." Pull your sales staff together, explain the 'HIT" promotion and explain the strength of its consumer publicity support.

A dealer's success with the nationwide promotion will depend on making the theme visible and an important part of a total merchandising program. It should be incorporated into print and broadcast advertising and consistently used at the point-ofsale,

The retailer may also suggest to area thrift institutions that the program can also help them promote home improvement loans. A special *HIT" marketing program is available for use by banks and savings and loans. Another program is designed especially for local newspapers. It provides materials with which to develop a special "Home Improvement Time" promotional issue.

A community program file contains everything an individual or local group needs to organize a community event.

It's time to plan your involvement in "HIT" and get the program working for you. Manufacturers interested in receiving a portfolio about the direct marketing benefits a Sponsoring Participant receives in this non-profit cooperative industry promotion and public relations activity should also write c/o the above.

Roofing Material

AHI Roofing has a lightweight metal-base roofing material, which is being introduced in the West.

Trademarked as Typhoon Tile Decramastic Roofing, it resembles clay tile when installed but reportedly weighs only one-sixth as much.

Each Typhoon Tile module be- gins as a iightweight, preformed 16-/z" x 54-%" interlocking galvanized steel panel with seven individual ti-le impressions. Over the 26 gauge, cold-

rolled zinc-coated steel module is a thick coating of bituminous waterbound emulsion. On this is applied a layer of natural color stone chips. After sealing with acrylic PVA binder, it's bonded by oven curing.

Each module interlocks top, bottom and sides with adjacent modules and requires only four nails to fasten to battens or spaced sheathing. Solid roof sheathing and asbestos felt are not required to form a weathertight roof, and installation is fast because there are only 20 Typhoon Tiles to a square the company claims.

To cipi- talize on the clean lines of the contemporary double window, it is treated as one, using a single shade to span the whole. Framed by a slim, wood lambrequin, the shade's trimming and curtain-ring pull were chosen in the brown of the frame.

New Exterior Wood Finish

The Flood Co., manufacturer of Penetrol paint conditioner, has a high solids protective finish which it says keeps exterior wood "alive". The new finish seals and waterproofs exterior wood, and actually enhances or restores its natural beauty, the company claims.

The product is being marketed as CWF Clear Wood Finish. Unlike most exterior finishes, it penetrates wood to provide a rugged, durable seal against the elements. This prevents swelling, shrinking, warping, splitting or blackening. Because it penetrates, it will not crack, chip or peel like varnish.

It can be used on anv exterior wood, from cedar shakes to redwood decks. It works equally well on old, new, rough sawn, planed or pressure treated wood. Within two weeks after its application, CWF reacts with the

wood to produce a uniform honey to brown color which enhances new wood and restores the natural beautv of old wood.

Preparation prior to application depends upon the type of wood being treated. However, once the wood has been prepared by weathering, light sanding, or bleaching if necessary, CWF can easily be applied by brush, rollbr, or any airless, conventional or garden sprayer. If the wood is unusually porous, two soaking coats may be necessary, the second coat being applied as soon as the first coat has been absorbed. When thoroughly dried, CWF leaves a rich matte appearance. For lasting protection, reapplication is necessary only every three years on horizontal surfaces and every five years on vertical surfaces.

Corrugated Pail

U.S. Gypsum has a new 25 kg. (55.1 lbs.) package for its joint compound, a high-strength "bag-in-box" container developed by Container Corporation of America.

The package is essentially a corrugated "patl" designed to replace metal and plastic containers. A plastic bag filled with ready-to-use sealer fits into a corrugated shipper. The shipper is approximately the same size as a metal pail and has a plastic handle

to facilitate carrying.

U.S.G. estimates that the new container saves approximately Yzd per pound of packaging material over metal pails. And, since the corrugated box is recyclable, the outer containers can be sold in the wastepaper market.

The containers' square shape allows them to be stacked wall-to-wa11, three pallets high, with three tiers per pallet.

Bulb-Lile Socket Adapter

The Power Saver Bulb-life Socket Adapter is a small solid state device that screws into a standard lampholder socket and includes its own socket for lamps up to 150 w. (120 vac).It is designed to reduce power conspmption by approximately 50% with a corresponding 50% decrease in lighting output. By reducing the power, the bulb-life is increased up to 20 times (depending on the use and installation). This feature is very useful in areas that do not require lots of light or where they are on continuously or for long periods, such as in hallways, porches, garages, carports, store fronts, office areas, and warehouses.

By using this device, the lighting cost is cut in half, and, since bulb changing can be reduced by up to 95Vo, savings on bulb rePlacement costs as well as maintenance costs result. Its use will be especially appreciated in areas where bulbs are difficult to reach or not easily accessible.

Where more light is needed, a larger bulb can be substituted and still retain the longer bulbJife feature.

The device is small, lightweight, with a diameter of l-%", and only extends the lamp l-3116" from its original position. U.L. listed, $2.95 each.

DrywallScrew

Rockford International has Wallmate, a newly-designed drywall screw (patent applied for) available in all

popular sizes for the industrial and commercial construction market.

The result of lengthy and extensive research and engineering, it has been specifically developed to reduce installation time, cut down on workers' fatigue and save labor and material costs.

It has been lab and field tested against top competitors on the market and has proven to be the fastest and most dependable in penetrating and seating in these performance evaluation tests. the firm claims.

Reportedly, the main reason Wallmate exceeds in performance is the uniquely-engineered, piercing point which provides consistent uniform quality performance and rapidly pierces drywall and 20 to 25 gauge metal or wood studs. Other improved features are the specially-designed bugle head which compresses face paper of wallboard to eliminate "fuzz" and the precision-engineered recess which minimizes wobble, bit sticking and camout. The thread design provides quick. secure fastening with minimum torque.

Point and threads are consistently tougher, deeper case depth and greater hardness makes the screw stronger than others and provides greater holding power, and screws are treated with a specially developed coating to inhibit rust and provide a base for joint compounds, the comPanY claims'

Point-Of-Use Water Systems

In-Sink-Erator has introduced point-of-use waterheating systems, including two UltraSystems (UltraHot and UltraWarm) and the steaming H2O tap hot water dispenser. All proviile heated water from a cold water line.

Water heating at point-of-use involves heating the water where it is used, at the sink, bath, or kitchen.

Each heats water in a small holding tank installed beneath the sink rather than in a large water tank placed several feet from the faucet.

Because the systems do not require long pipe runs, the heated water is available as soon as the faucet is turned on; the user does not waste the water that has sat in the pipes and cooled down. The systems feature a watersaving faucet with a special low flow rate that limits water flow to one gal- lon per minute. (Average flow rates range from 3-6 gals. per minute.)

In-Sink-Erator researchers estimate that, given 100' of pipe between a conventional hot water tank and a lavatory, and given an average water usage, an UltraSystem will save nearly 9,000 gals. of water and 2,000 kw hours of electricity per year.

Both systems use a /z-gal. holding tank that heats water to a temDerature of 190- 200oF. When the incomins

New Hardwall Hanger

Hanging items on cement, cinder block, concrete, hard wood, soft brick and plaster walls is no longer a messy unsightly chore with a new line of Hardwall Hangers from Homecraft.

The decorative metal hardware goes up with a hammer taP, works on regular walls as well and features an exclusive straightening feature. As shown, the hanger has a tough nylon plug with three pre-set tempered steel pins and fits into a socket of the metal hook. A hinged decorative metal cover flips over and hides the anchoring system. A light tap of the hammer causes the pins to penetrate the hardest of walls, and the nylon plug allows the pins to deflect around small stones in concrete for added holding strength.

The addition of a long angled nail enables the hanger to be used equally as well on regular walls like drywall.

SIDELOADER ADVANTAGES

(Continued from page 1Z)

as to allow 20'loads to be carried on public highways!

The benefit is faster movement of material, less damaged material charges. The sideloader design concept is

for a one-piece mobile handling equipment which combines the best characteristics of a flatbed truck and a fork lift. The sideloader can stack loads. load or unload flatbeds, carry loads over long distances. It can even order pick loads from cantilever racks.

The benefit is that one piece of equipment and one man can do several different material handling jobs, cutting

55We're redwood p rod

production time lost due to waits for material.

In order to get the maximum bene- fit from a sideloader installation, identify and specify the proper truck. Here are some factors to consider:

Power Source.' For indoor opera- tions the obvious choices are electric or LP gas. The latter should be chosen if the duty cycle is heavy or if some outdoor work is required.

An outdoor operation requires gas- oline (possibly with LP option if some indoor operation is required) or diesel. Diesel is preferred if the duty cycle is heavy. Some larger pneumatic-tired models are available only with diesel power.

Capacity: Lifting capacity is determined by size of load, lift height required and terrain. As with frontloader lift trucks, sideloader capacity is de-rated above certain lift heights.

There are some other special considerations. The rated load- center of sideloaders is approximately half the width of the deck. Capacity for carry- ing is usually equal to the lifting capacity.

Deck and I'1)e7l Capacity llidth: The width of a sideloader deck is important because a truck's deck should be approximately equal in width to the widest load to be carrie d.

A sideloader can carry loads wider than the deck provided they are within the truck's capacity, and the load center of gravity is supported by the deck. However, this does present problems when stacking these loads in racks, or end to end. The mast traverse is equal only to deck width, and loads wider than the deck cannot be withdrawn completely clear of adjoining loads. Extra aisle clearance, and clearance at the load ends, must be provided.

Because traverse is limited to deck width, standard forks are aPProximately equal to deck width. Longer forks should not be specified.

One other specification concerning a sideloader deck is the well widththe hole in the deck through which the mast traverses. If pallets are to be handled, this well should be wide enough to allow the Pallets to be drawn into it. Thus, Pallets can be stored in racks all the way to ground level and still be reached bY the sideloader.

Attachments: The most common attachment for a sideloader is the spreader beam, which is an extra set of forks attached to the mast carriage and extending over the ends of the deck. They prevent excess bending and vibration.

If a spreader beam is used, the sideloader must be down-rated in capacity.

Because a spreader beam complicates pick-up operation, it should only be specified where a load is simply too flexible to handle otherwise.

A major factor in any new sideloader installation is facility rearrangement. Any area previously serviced by alternate handling equipment generally must be rearranged to obtain maximum sideloader benefit.

This usually includes ribbon stacking loads with the working aisle (aisle between loads) parallel to the longer dimension of the yard or storage area. A turning aisle is usually required at each end of the area. This facilitY rearrangement coupled with sideloader operation saves money through better selectivity and stock rotation; better inventory control and faster operation.

Completely restored, the Continental is used daily for business driving for the San Leandro, Ca. firm. Olson and Delisle have added a quad sound system, cruise control and air condittioning. Entered against stiff competition in two car shows, it has already won a third place and is expected to do well in the upcoming Western National Continental Car Show.

These remarkable cars were only built in 1956 and 1957 and were the heaviest and most expensive autos built in the USA since the legendary Duesenberg. In their 20 month production span, only 3,012 were built. Only one convertible was constructed and it was for Mrs. William Clay Ford, sister-in-law of Henry Ford II.

Ron also has a 1921 Dodge Touring (see photo), which recently won a first place pize in ajudging event. The newest car in the stable is a 1966 Rolls Royce Silver Shadow. A big four-door, it has been completely restored and painted silver and black.

Don't ask Ron for a ride, though, his wife Judy has already laid claim to the Rolls.
